I'd love to be a loser like him. Master.
Julián Dulcey Galeano Very well said
Absolutely right!
I'm with you too, Roger
Exactly!
This shows that even if nobody puts the spotlight on you, even if nobody believes you are the best. You can still be the greatest, you can still achieve the best things
"At this rate, I won't win an Oscar until 2049."
Well, wish granted
Vito C underrated comment
did he actually say that? and before blade runner lol
Epic comment
oscar ceremony is piece of shit! show for idiots
Turns out he was the OG all along, winning in 1917 😏
I remember everyone bitching about Leonardo di Caprio not winning an Oscar and then Roger's Deakins is just like *hold my beer*
look to Al Pacino.
as well as christopher nolan
Hitchcock, Kubrick, Altman, Peter O’Toole.
Aldo El Apache Oscars are a joke. Don’t forget about Roman Polanski 🤣🤣🤣
Scorsese was like, hold my house
Gotta admit though
A lot of the movies he lost to were incredibly hard movies to compete against in the first place
Yeah, how are you supposed to win against Lord of the Rings or Inception?
@@ryaaaaaaaan7115 Or Lubezki. That dude is a genius as well
Yeah it would be the honor of my professional career to lose a pie eating contest to Chivo, much less an Oscar (or three).
Yes but a couple of them still have me scratching my head - like Titanic over Kundun, Legends of the Fall over Shawshank Redemption and Slumdog Millionaire over Country for Old Men?
Donna Cianciosi Ya Shawshank was a definite snub
To be fair, *everyone* lost to LOTR
Against Return of the King, not the Fellowship of the Ring
And to Titanic
Apart from the acting categories, yeah
The first 2 of the LOTR movies really do deserve best cinematography frankly ...
The first one had those amazing extended scenes with Balrog,, the second one had really other worldly scenes in marshlands, the battle scenes in the rain with so many monsters and soldiers in such gritty details and amazing lightings ...
Both movies were flawless in using cgi to enhance the epic feel of the story which is a rare thing considering how most cgi cheapens movies to become kiddie fares .... They had amazing compositions in every single scenes with no dull moments at all ...
Best loser in my opinion - what a legend.
Just revisiting this after he won. Not a loser anymore, but still a damn legend.
Roger Deakins doesn't need the Oscar rather The Academy needs him.
Nihar Behera just like Leonardo DiCaprio
Leo needed his Oscar. I don't think his brain could have handled another loss.
Did you hear how the Oscars were going to do Cinematography during commercial breaks?
Because he's the DP the academy deserves, but not the one it needs right now.
The Oscars lost to him 13 times
Truth be told, he was battling giants at each moment...
He was battling them until he became a giant himself.
MrRetlav plus the Oscars are a joke
He was born a giant slayer, before becoming the very thing he swore to destroy. 😔
Tre' Roney nope most of these are deserved
you tell me titanic had the most breathtaking cinematography of that year?
He has 2 now.
How the times have changed.
Adv H he does?
@@NikoYaqoub yes for blade runner and recently 1917.
My my how the turntables
I loved 1917!
Yeah because movies these days aren't that great
Me: How the hell do you lose when you’re nominated twice in the same year?
“And the Oscar goes to There Will Be Blood”
Me: Oh...
yeah...I know...
I was thinking the same thing, and then when they announced what won, I was like, "Well.... yeah..."
But even considering how beautiful twbb was, Jesse James was still the more deserving candidate.
It was hauntingly beautiful, every frame of it was , also, should have won for best score.
@@stevewalker6240 I really liked Jesse James, your 'no' just broke my heart.
@@stevewalker6240 No? Jesse James is the best cinematography I've ever seen in my life.
He won the Oscar, that's what we expected.
About time too!
Hell yeah, completely deserved. Fucking amazing guy. I’ve heard his name before but now I see what amazing movies he has made and I visually enjoyed he has definitely deserved it, he should’ve won earlier times though with Fargo and Shawshank Redemption
Roger Deakins won an Oscar?
sn0wiron
I think the Academy just got sick of Deakins’ shtick i.e. casting characters in shadow and thinking it’s cinematography.
@@colin-campbell That is not his schtick, at all
Everything about bladerunner 2049 was awesome. Screw the Oscars
Luvie1980 He’s a great cinematographer but lost to other films that had better cinematography in those years. This year I believe he will win.
Yo Soy Bob Oso how he lost for shawshank blows my mind
But Dunkirk.. so make it 15
Except the music.
+Chilli Roach blade runner was better in that regard IMO.
If he doesn't win this year, it'll be a crime. Blade Runner 2049 is maybe the most visually brilliant movies I've ever seen
Austin Vawter Dunkirk says hi... It will be a very tight nomination.
Dunkirk doesn't even deserve to be nominated for cinematography, 'cause de film have flaws in the use of natural lighting, and it's noticeable in some scenes (like some dogfights scenes) how the lighting change from take to take when they edited the movie. I still don't get why they nominated Hoyte van Hoytema for this movie and not for Interstellar, where he did a better job.
Josh Cell wait a minute... Interstellar wasn't nominated for best cinematography??! *goes and checks* son of a *****. I just dont understand the academy.
So many incredibly memorable and culturally defining films are snubbed on a regular basis. I will never understand how inception or TDK didnt win in 2010 and 2008 respectively.
Name one movie from those years off the top of your head that is more memorable and better than those films. I really enjoyed Slumdog millionaire but the fact it won over TDK makes me question how prestigious the academy really is.
Time is wiser than people, that's why the best movies are the ones that people remember over the decades, not the ones that win more awards in a ceremony.
Austin Vawter how is it fucking inception wins an Oscar for cinematography even though half the scenes are just fucking shot-reverse shot and then something like Interstellar doesn’t win.
He should have said when he received his Oscar "This just goes to show you. No one beats Roger Deakins 14 times in a row."
Roger Deakins not winning an oscar for such a long time says a lot about the Oscars than Roger.
The Oscars is famous for giving awards to the wrong people or movies. Happens every year it’s a joke
Agreed. Everybody knows these things are rigged. I would very much like to have10% that loser’s mastery of light and composition.
Yeah Another good example is when they cheated Ridley Scott out from gladiator. Just about everyone having to do anything in that movie got an Oscar except for Ridley
This actually says that Roger is one of the greatest Cinematographers of all time. I mean... he's gotten nominated 14 times. He is 1 of 5 Cinematographers to have gotten nominated 14 or more times. That's how good he is. The Oscars say a lot about just how amazing Roger is. He is truly one of the greats and will forever be recognized as a legend by the Academy and by the people, at least by those who actually like this sorta stuff. Lol
But yeah, I love Roger.
To be fair, almost every time he was going against really good movies
that was quite well edited
djbstio gunse ....Beautifully edited peppered with some startling images.
nice selection of scenes to showcase as well
and the oscar for best youtube editing goes to...?
Great cinematography too...
yes
I would have bet my life that he'd win for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Every single frame of that movie was beautiful.
It's a joke he lost to there will be blood! In my opinion Jesse James was the best cinematography work in history
ibrahim tair Jesse James has incredible cinematography, but There Will Be Blood has this gorgeous simple natural look that I love, especially the effect of the oil and the fire.
Miss X I do agree with you in terms of there will be blood had some breathtaking cinematography but I just can't see how anyone would vote for it over Jesse James!
ibrahim tair I understamd. But they're both fantastic gorgeous films, so I don't mind.
He was nominated twice that year so he split the vote and Robert Elswit won.
He is by far the most consistently genial cinematographer out there.
You can’t win against there will be blood, that’s cheating
True. While Roger Deakins always did a superb job, the competition was strong a lot of times. (There will be blood, The Revenant, Inception,...)
TheRealEtron OH Yeah I forgot about Inception that’s even more so
@@therealetron3671 And LOTR:TFOTR
There Will Be Blood is a towering achievement in every single regard. It's my favorite film ever, and I'm still a little salty that it didn't win Best Picture that year (though No Country for Old Men is equally phenomenal).
HorseheadNebula85 I agree about there will be blood also check out there will be bud on RUclips it’s a crack up
1) I'm glad for him, he's deserved every nomination
2) Aside from a couple questionable years, most of these losses aren't steals. He's been up against some amazing movies.
Well, he lost to Emmanuel Lubeszki. I mean, I can't think of a better person to lose to
IMO "The Revenant" had near perfect cinematography, but "Birdman" was technically great but artisticly meeeh and "Gravity" even more
Once? maybe. Two times? .... OK, I guess. But three times??? that's too much
Jim Adkleas The Revenant has more cinematography than actual history telling that's the bad side of the film. I say Roger should had won that year.
I actually prefer Lubeszki, but Bladerunner was a masterpiece of light and shadow. I hope he wins this year.
Joel Foo We are all Hoping for him. Lubezki is a close second for me in general, children of men wouldn't be the same without him.
He better win! Blade Runner 2049 had the best cinematography of the year!
Osiel Escalante cough.. Dunkirk cough..
He won!
Had best cinematography of all time
Bowen Z Dunkirk was meh
Best of this decade, possibly.
Whoever edited this deserves a raise and a promotion. BTW, you can tell this person is a fan of Roger Deakins and the title is tongue-in-cheek.
Skyfall is one of the most impressively shot movies of the past decade. There’s one shot in particular when the soldiers are closing in on the house, and Deakins does this shot of the car mirror’s reflection that is just incredible.
He’s one of the true masters, but in nearly every instance (except maybe “Slumdog Millionaire”) I was like “oh ok I could see that winning instead of Deakins.”
Man had bad luck, real bad luck
Slumdog millionaire was a Great movie
@C S You lose any credibility whatsoever when you question the lighting and tracking in Prisoners. You are either blind or delusional, not an aficionado! 😂😂😂
@Rahul Mondal Well, that's very interesting. I never thought of it like that. It does make sense.
@C S I get your point but his point is quite irrefutable too. Damn! Quite an interesting discussion.
Seeing all the nominations compiled together like this is super interesting. I think it actually reveals a possible explanation behind all of Deakins' losses. First of all, Deakins tends to work on understated projects. Few of them are as mainstream and 'exciting' as Titanic, Gravity, or Slumdog Millionaire--basically, they contain less showy subject matter. And Deakins' photographic style itself isn't flashy in the way that many of those winners were. It seems that you may need to have a better eye and deeper appreciation for photography than the average academy viewer to see the profound mastery in his work.
I think he was facing really tough competition that's all
@@movieclipshd2316 maybe, but at least half of those he should've won. Either way they're rigged to shit.
For the most part I can understand why he didn't win, but he should have won against Slumdog Millionair
The films also aren't as overtly political. If you look at the years when he wasn't up against something flashy, he was up against something with a 'message'.
Movie ClipsHD agreed. I’d have only argued for him winning over Titanic and even then it’s not like Titanic was bad.
Poor Roger
Que bueno encontrarte de casualidad aca
Fabio Baccaglioni bonito verte por aca
ROGER WON HIS OSCAR!
but i never predicted anything, i said poor roger for those 13 oscars he lost
HE WON!!!!
And didn't even get a nomination for Jarhead.
True, although I would have to say that with only a handful of really compelling shots in that film, it doesn't surprise me that he was not nominated for that film compared to these others.
Jarhead would be a tough one to give, I think. I felt that was Christopher Doyle's year but he didn't get nominated either.
Or The Village... That movie was beautifully shot
Considering that you only need 40 votes for a nomination, it's a wonder that he hasn't been given the nod more often.
Looking at the 2005 Oscars, BAFTAs, and American Cinematographers Guild Awards, looks like the big winner of all three was Memoirs of a Geisha. Brokeback Mountain was also nominated in all three, Batman Begins and Good Night and Good Luck were up for two, and The New World, King Kong, The Constant Gardener, Crash, and March of the Penguins all received one nod. Pretty crazy year. Lol
The music is "Quiz Question" by Laurent Dury, in case anyone wondering...
Bless you
Seeing what he loses to though is like trying to choose what leg you’d rather get chopped off. Like the revenant is art
Yes but Sicario's shots make me involuntarily swear under my breath every 10 minutes. That descending into darkness shot followed by all the night vision stuff and the rules of engagement......gripping and awe inspiring
"Losers stay down. Winners get back up."
- Arnold Schwarzenegger
To be fair it’s not like he was losing to shit. I’d probably only be “outraged” when he lost to Titanic. Even then.
I mean look at who he lost to for O Brother, Crouching Tiger was amazing.
I think o brother is better, but yeah really tough competition. Not only crouching tiger, but there will be blood, gravity, inception, lord of the rings, Life of Pi, The revenant. He is just really unlucky.
yeah, it wasn't exactly accurate to frame him as losing considering he won the nominations. he made it to the top percentile beating almost everyone in most of the world at his field. it's still very impressive. it's like a silver medal, folks!
DSQueenie I agree with this!
I was wondering "What kind of movie has better cinematography than No Country For Old men?" And then I saw There Will Be Blood.
Crouching Tiger was breathtakingly beautiful. No doubt
I was expecting there to be a ton of snubs here but a lot of the time he lost to incredible films. Nothing to be ashamed about but at least 2049 deservedly won.
2049 - an utter masterpiece.
....utterly and completely. Truth!
In terms of photography and cinematography, absolutely. But it is not a masterpiece as a film. It was too slow paced, the story was dull, and the direction was questionable.
@@Nick-GR all of that is subjective.
Blade Running Time 2049 minutes...
Nick it was so bad as a film. 4/10
2018: No Oscars For Roger Deakins
2019 and 2020 : Oscar goes to Roger Daekins
Problem Solved
Back round music what film?
He won in 18 and 20
I Hope this year he wins... It's the only chance because no Emmanuel Lubezki
bobbywrtm as much as I want to see him win, he's gonna lose to Dunkirk if the trend continues
There is no way Hoyte Van Hoytema is winning the Oscar. Roger has won many more awards this year for Blade Runner than him for Dunkirk. This year's Oscar belongs him already.
look out for Rachel Morrison she might take the award Unfournatley
Hell no, Mudbound's cinematography is good, and don't take me the wrong way, but Rachel Morrison's nomination is just to nominate a woman and clear their image with all this Time's Up movement. She might win some day because she is good, but not this year. There is a change coming for women, but it's soon and the Oscars have to pay their debt with Roger Deakins
I swear to god I have a terrible feeling Mudbound will steal Deakin's Oscar. Had a nightmare about it as well for real.
Let's hope we hear "And the Oscar goes to Roger Deakins for Blade Runner 2049" when the day comes...
...who cares about oscars? art is not an olympic competition...
Andreas For the industrie, it is.
I know... :)
It's the highest award in the industry. I would devote my life getting one of those. Just like most great actors out there.
@Ian Jones If it only that weren't true. Hollywood right now is full of shit. Pushing political agendas and crowd pleasing movies over artistic films. Disney owning everything and just nominating their own movies at this point. Roma somehow losing to the feel good movie, Green Book. What a shame it's become. If only it were run by actual people who know art...
Ian Jones How does whoever presents the award affect the value of it? If the presenter is a rapist or not that’s really not relevant to the prestige of the Acadamy Awards. Or is it?
The legendary Sir Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar
Ushiraj Garg Stanley Kubrick also never won an Oscar. Well, he kinda did, but it wasn't even for his work
he got best picture for Rebecca (1940)
@@miguelpereira9859 He won in the Best Visual Effects category for 2001.
@@garrettafancytrouser1424 He didn't produce the film, so he didn't get the award. Best picture guest to Producers. If you just direct it you don't get the Oscar for it. That's why there's a separate category for Best Director.
Miguel Pereira Kubrick got a god damn Razzie. This is why the awards are worthless.
It's impossible to win against Peter Jackson's LOTR.
A lot of the Oscars for LOTR were totally justified, but honestly, not eleven. For example, "Best adapted screenplay" should have gone to 'City of God' or 'Mystic River'.
City of God had a much better screenplay than LOTR!
I agree with the actual winners for a lot of those years, but nothing else this year stands up to Blade Runner 2049. If the Oscar goes to Dunkirk I'll fucking riot.
I agree, when Deakins won for both Blade Runner and 1917, it was based solely on its merits and totally well deserved wins!!
HE DID IT!! HE FINALLY FUCKIN GOT AN OSCAR!!!
Finally, the Academy listened!
He must really hate Emmanuel Lubezki 😂
Lubezki is his fan.
Well this year he presented his own version of Lubezki in 1917.
@@Com18Alpha if you can't beat him, become him
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Roger's movement more clean than Lubezki's?
Arthur Reign yes it is!
what's crazy is that despite how utterly unbelievable and amazing Deakins is, 90 percent of those losses do make a lot of sense to me when compared to the films that beat him out, and are ones I would have likely voted for too lol. but I'm glad he's finally won one though, it is very well deserved.
All that said... those are some quality losses.
Better not get snubbed this year also
Hey thoros
+Thoros I don't think he got snubbed. Franco is the guy who got snubbed. If Deakins doesn't get the Oscar this year, he will just have had another disappointing loss.
I think all there was to this was he was just facing really tight competition but with blade runner 2049, he just out did himself
Losing to Chivo is nothing to be ashamed of. Even then this guy has some splendid cinematography.
I love that at 1:53 he's like, "God why do I have to be here. Not gonna win anyway am I?"
This is proof that Oscars don't matter at all. When an institution is supposed to celebrate the very best of cinema and then doesn't award the people who have been making excelent work you just can't take them seriously. It's not that the "winners" are bad or anything but Deakins is beyond the Oscars very much like when Bob Dylan was awarded with the Nobel Prize. "It's like giving a prize to the Everest for being the tallest mountain on earth"
this is proof roger deakins is garbage
UnbelievabIeMontages you are an absolute idiot
looool they called him a loser in the beginning....i wanna be like roger deakins though, dude is so legendary he has transcended validation from award shows.
He’s had solid opponents but this year Deakins is truly the best with Blade Runner 2049
I cannot describe in words how happy I was that 1917 won Best Cinematography. That was a great technical achievement.
A loser is someone who is so afraid of not winning, he doesn't even try. He is not a loser.
Wow, thank you for showing me how spectacular roger actually is. I didn’t even know he did all of these movies including my favorite movie of all time (Fargo)
"The Assassination of Jesse James" is one of the most stunning looking films I have ever seen. Engrossing, moving cinematography, gives me the chills just thinking about it. Thanks also to a perfectly complimentary soundtrack . I love "There Will Be Blood" but there is no way it looks superior, especially since they are shot in very similar styles.
To each their own, I personally think TWBB is one of the most visually beautiful movies of all time. Not to say that Jesse James isn’t also, just that it’s a battle between two of the best ever, and at that point it could really go either way.
For a true artist who loves his profession and wants to do his work in lovable and satisfactory manner-"oscar is not a mean audiance applaud is enough
He’s not a loser. He’s a contender. Anyone who can nominee multiple times like he has is a winner in my book. Don’t feel bad for him
Roger Deakins, Gary Oldman, Sam Rockwell. It seems the Academy finally got one year right.
The oscars should have nominated blade runner for best picture
Dude the movie was nominated for best picture. It didn't win.
Aamer Zeeshaan no it wasnt lol
1:55 his face danm i would be pissed too!
He HAS to win this year.
Uno de los momentos más bellos fue verlo ganar su primer Oscar. Jamás había visto una ovación de pie para un director de fotografía. Se lo merece. Es un grande.
Deakins has won 2 Oscars already but i can't stop coming back to this video.
Better change that to 1 win now. Congrats Roger!

The cinematography in Blade Runner 2049 had me giggling in amazement. I think he has a good shot this year. Could easily lose to Dunkirk though, they were both literally breathtaking.
Dylan417 Dunkirk wasn’t that breathtaking. Hoytema did better work on Interstellar
@@desirereleased3423 yeah, it was more of a technical masterpiece. 2049 was great both technically and artistically.
Don't take this the wrong way, I like Deakins, but I was so satisfied watching Lubezki win three years in a row. His work had been absolutely amazing for years and had to lose more than a few times to finally get there. I mean, Children of Men and The Tree of Life should have won back then.
Who keeps rewatching this because the music is badass?
I just have no idea where I can listen to it.
Such a beautiful edited video with the beautiful music. Thanks to everyone who worked on this.
I'm an Indian and Slumdog Millionaire doesn't deserve most of the Oscars that it won that year. Hence, Roger should have won for The Reader even if it wasn't his best work among those which were nominated before or since then.
I personally feel conflicted by Slumbog Millionaire’s win for Best Cinematography. Although I thought the film’s cinematography was fantastic but part of me felt that Slumbog Millionaire borrowed a lot of cinematography style of City of God, especially during the shaky cam scenes. I personally thought City of God did their cinematography style much better than Slumdog Millionaire but can’t hate in the it’s Oscar win too much because the film’s cinematography does enough to separate itself from City of God on how beautifully the film’s cinematography showcased the overall beauty of India’s landscapes and culture. The train scenes and the Taj Mahal were shot beautifully.
I have a feeling this year will be his Leonardo DiCaprio year.
And you were right!
He’ll win for BR2049 but should have won for Fargo. He’s a master in the field cinematography and has cemented his legacy
Whenever I want to soothe myself, I come here and watch it. All shots and images just somehow mesmerize me and make me happy.
Al Pacino only has 1 Oscar for Scent of a Woman, while he was also nominated for The Godfather 2, Serpico, The Godfather, and Justice for all, etc... But we know he's a legendary actor!
Same with Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Hans Zimmer, etc. All legends!
Many of these I prefer his film visually and technically but some of the others he was against pure masterpieces.
Some of these he totally deserved to win, but for a lot of them the cinematography of the winners were better. I love his work, but I also disagree with people who act like he should have won every time.
(He totally deserved the win for Blade Runner 2049 and I am super happy for him though)
The only nomination where I thought Deakins should have won for was for The Shawshank Redemption over Legends of the Fall. The scene where Tim Robbins escapes and he’s on his knees in the rain is one of the most iconic moments in movies. But every nomination after that were justified losses in my opinion. It’s a good thing he already won 2 Oscars since!
Congratulations on the Oscar, Roger!!!!!!! You deserved it!!!! Finally!!!! You did it buddy!!!
He was almost every year against very heavy competition. Glad he finally got it twice now
I’m not a huge film buff but to this day I’ve never seen a better looking and shot movie than BR 2049 at the movie theater. The jaw just dropped and stayed there the entire film
Now he has 2 Oscars in 3 years.
How the turntables
Ha, not anymore
How could he lose "The Assasination of Jesse James"? HOW? You could pause this movie at any time, take out the shot, print it and hang it in an art gallery because its so gorgeousley shot. The same goes for "Blade Runner 2049", where he FINALLY got his well deserved Oscar. In my opinion its his ultimate masterpiece. If you dont agree, just watch it or watch it again.
that ending made me emotional for some reason.. such a legend. Well deserved nominations and finally an EPIC win with Blade Runner 2049.
Great video. Crafty and the music builds wonderfully. I'm sure we're all happy with the outcome of the 2018 Oscar winner for cinematography
The legend has just won his FIRST Oscar today!!!

Honestly, all those winners have solid arguments for winning.
That consistency is very inspiring.
I always wondered why I loved watching these movies, turns out I just really love Roger Deakins' work...
I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't mad about a single one of those other movies winning their cinematography Oscars instead. What a damn tough category to be in.
HE FINALLY WON!!!!
cinematography of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford should be studied at film schools, it is pure art.
I just lost at a competition for the 3rd time, and this video gave me so much strength and inspiration

And now he has 2 oscars (2049,1917). So, he will won if his movie titled by year
In 2007 (80th Oscars) Deakins was nominated twice for two different films....AND HE STILL DIDN'T WIN.
That made me so mad hahahaha. But still, There Will Be Blood has fantastic cinematography.
Every one of Deakins' films is basically my own personal shortlist of my favourite films of all time... no matter the writer, director, editor, actor. It's not even a conscious choice... there just must be some common attraction to the material/stories being told.
He won two Oscars since this video came out, wrap your head around that. LEGEND!
