  • Well guys it’s a day late because of my birthday celebration taking priority, but this is worth waiting for. We setup our own court scenario and defend our business against the prosecution from another channel! This was a low blow from them!

Solution: 1. Put a tag on all of the blocks and parts that states, “This part needs to be thoroughly cleaned before assembly”. 2. Stop offering to just drill out the holes for the long studs on Cossie engines, instead advise the customer that Cossie engines need special machining and helicoil thread inserts, to ensure that the long studs are completely vertical.

I have posted in that video where you diagnosed the block issue that your shop should keep a dedicated set of long studs, preferably painted or powder coated an obnoxiously bright color just to do dummy builds and alignment verifications with. I still maintain that you should implement that practice. It will save you all kinds of grief the moment you start it.

    I love machining engine parts.
I've been machining for 41 years Lee, and what you are saying sounds absolutely right to me, chill spots in cast iron can be a nightmare, and as far as I can remember I've never heard you say anything that sounded wrong to me.
I machined a billet steel crankshaft for a BRM F1 engine a few years ago, and that's not a cheap engine to rebuild.
Two weeks after the crank went out we got another order from the highly reputed historic racecar restorer who had built the engine.......and put the thrust bearings inside out and trashed the £5k crank!!

That was probably the shop that called the fire Marshal on you. I don't know how it works over in the UK but here in the US their comments would be considered defamation of character making them liable for damages to your business. Especially since she made things right when they bring the block back to you and you corrected the mistake. But they should have used their common sense and ran a thread cleaner through all the stud holes. When I get a block back from the machine shop I go over thoroughly and I run a thread cleaner through all the holes and I use my USB Endoscope Camera to look down the thresholds to make sure they're clean.

50 years ago we had to use dental mirrors - today it is SO EASY to do with a USB scope.

He multiplied various numbers on the blackboard correctly but then wrote 9 X 10 = 91. Of course the class giggled and pointed out to him that his answer was wrong. His reply was that despite being right nine times, no one acknowledged his success but now one mistake is acknowledged! Don't know if that's a true story but it fits. Hi you need to listen better he was not supplied with a stud and he did not have one. So therefor he wouldn't of known it was not straight or not.

I said it before - in that example, you were a machinist not a hygienist … down to the builder. And as you rightly espouse … assume nothing … that’s why you’re stripping a brand new water pump
    … that’s how professionals work.
