this preset is already my favourite after about 45min of testing it out. Portra 400 was good, Gold 200 was great, this one is EXCELLENT. already have it as my default import preset haha.
I have a few presets from you already Dave. This Portra 800 is by far your best! No knock on the others, but this is closest to what I see in my head, and edit towards typically. Awesome job!
Great, Dave! I really enjoy the presets. Especially the Porta 800. Can you explain how to add border modifiers (like in the Jake Tovar Edition) to all presets. That would be great!
@@davidherring Thank you very much for your answer! Unfortunately, I have the problem that frames are not quite straight. With some photos this is due to the integrated RAW lens correction, with others the frames are still uneven even after deactivating the lens correction. Is there a tip for this?
Finally got a chance to use this preset. FIRE 🔥🔥🔥🔥. That Cali Gold is unmatched. And yes this is as close to one click as you will get. I only have to use the preset adjustments you provided. Appreciate it boss! 10/10 RECOMMEND!
Just bought it 😁 As always awesome presets 👌🏼 I love Portra 800 with my M6 and the Summilux 50 Crome V1 😁 Now I could have it also with my Q2 Reporter and the M10 🤙🏼 Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
We’re doing it! It’s definitely a new endeavor and my C1 partner and I are really wanting feedback to better dial things in. We’ll be reaching out to the C1 community who purchased at the end of the week, and we’ll likely have ongoing updates to any C1 preset while we get feedback. Thanks for being part of the community!
@@davidherring So far I really like this and I'll probably pick up the 400 also. I picked 6 random images and 5 out of 6 turned out gorgeous. Not sure what's up with #6. It goes mostly white with a faint light blue quarter. Very odd. I'm going to check some others. it's just a typical landscape. Ground. Sky.
Ok so I have to say this: your presets are the best I ever purchased and used so far! Story time: I am an enthusiast photographer who loves film but can't afford it anymore. I have switched to digital and I'm actually very happy with it except for the colors. I have never been able to get the colors I want (the 'film look' on digital), and it's pretty hard to do for me because I also have no experience with photo editing/color grading etc. I have been trying to get the look I want ever since I started with digital and failed ever since lol Even though I bought a lot of presets. I actually spent way too much money on them tbh. Anyway, when I first saw your video about how to make all your images look like film, sth clicked in my brain. I went back and tried this method on my photos and it already looked amazing, way better than any result I got by myself. I was already happy but I decided to get your presets because I thought 'this guy knows what he's doing, unlike me, so it will look even better'. I started with Kodak Gold 200 and was absolutely amazed at the results. Finally my photos lookthe way I want them to 😍 I was pumped so next I got Kodak Portra 400 and man, this is perfect! Like really I can't stress it enough: your presets are *the only ones* who *actually* look like film, in my opinion. Now I'm really excited to have 2 presets who work differently for different scenes/lighting situations, all while staying consistent in the look they output, and as soon as I can I will pick-up this new one because I'm sure it's amazing. 👍🏻 Do you have any tip to make night/low light or tungsten light kind of photos look good using your presets though? I'm still not 100% happy and I can play with sliders in lightroom but since I don't understand everything they do... 😅 Any tips or a specific preset in your arsenal? 🙂
Thank you so much for these kind words! Comments like this mean so much to me. I really appreciate it. As for tungsten light, I typically will start by trying the Tungsten setting in LR white balance. That typically will give me a good starting point. Additionally, try adding some red in the shadows in color grading, specifically set the hue to 10, and slowly bring up the saturation and bring down the luminance. That could get you moving in the right direction.
@@davidherring thank you so much for replying and for your tips! I will definitely try that 🙂 Your hard work really shows and I'm happy to support you. Those are indeed very good presets! 😊
@@davidherring btw, is there any chance that you could developp other presets someday like Kodak Ektar 100 or Ultramax 400? Seeing how good your presets are that would also be awesome 🙂
Really cool video, I'm very interested to try out the Capture One preset! Could you include a separate video of editing the same images side by side to compare the Lightroom preset from the Capture One?
I actually am pretty ignorant with capture one, so I hired a guy who is an expert to help create these. If I showed myself using capture one, everyone would lose confidence in me 😅😂
Ha, all you'd need to do is use Adobe Monochrome profile, use RGB curves tweaks to get the brown tint, pull clarity down to -40, and heavy vignette. Boom.
Impressive work! And the results are clearly really good, there’s no denying that! But I’m left scratching my head: when would I want a faded grainy film look with inaccurate colours, whilst also removing character (vignette in particular) from the lens itself? Should I also listen to music on cassette tapes? Would I actually use this preset? Still scratching my head about this…
Not everyone has a film camera and not everyone can afford film. Even a person who wants to get into photography but only has a iPhone can use this preset. Accessibility is important to me, which is why I try to price accessible as well. Thanks for the comment.
@@davidherring Thank you for being so polite, my post was a bit tongue in cheek, and your presets are clearly excellent and very well thought out. Unlike the kids of today, I had to use film for 15+ years, dubious random developing processes and all, and I can’t really fathom why I’d want to go back to that. My wedding photos all have dodgy colours, even the pro ones. For similar reasons I don’t generally enjoy games with 8-bit low-res graphics, or cassette tapes. Vinyl and especially 8-bit sound tracks are a different matter 🙃

I never shot film so forgive me lacking of context: what’s the main difference between portra 400 and 800 regarding to color? I thought they are just iso differences?
@@davidherring Got it. I bought most of your presets just because yours makes the other presets looks like trash. Do you have plan to talk about black mist filter? I read one article by you about how to take film look photos. You mentioned about it. Nowadays everyone are talking about black mist filter. I feel it could be a good topic for your channel just because you never say BS about color grading.

Just got this preset. Tried it on a wedding and man oh man 🔥🔥
Love this!
Already have your Porta 400 preset in my heavy rotation for Leica shots. Pumped for this release!
Thanks! I have been using it on everything for months. I really think it’s my favorite one yet!
Dave this is so spot on. I did a side by side comparison of some photos I shot with P800, and you’ve outdone yourself.🫡 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Haha thanks! I did SEVERAL rolls to develop and confirm this.
Very good Dave. Most presets are too heavy handed for me buts yours are spot on. 👍
Thanks! Hope you love it!

Thanks! Only took about 20 rolls to dial it in haha.
Great, Dave! I really enjoy the presets. Especially the Porta 800. Can you explain how to add border modifiers (like in the Jake Tovar Edition) to all presets. That would be great!
They’re just linear masks with exposure settings. If you have the JT pack, the borders will work on any photo.
