“Be stoic” is terrible advice for a man. Way too many emotionally unavailable husbands & fathers out there to keep promoting that. It’s good to hold steady in times of crisis, but never being emotional will destroy you and your family after enough time.

If you’re stoic, you’re able to face adversity calmly and without excess emotion. It’s about self control. He was not implying to be emotionless or robotic. He was saying you cannot let your emotions lead you or dictate your behavior. Let your mind lead you.
Stoic is looking for the solutions when theres a problem and not panicking and screaming like you see so many other people do, Not showing your emotions at the times where it is needed. Of course you show emotion in times where you need to, basically just don't be overly emotional. It will never benefit you. No-one will ever be "emotionally unavailable" if you make them feel comfortable. This is more of a relationship issue rather then a advise issue.
