    • @pupper5580
      @pupper5580 Год назад +4

      I just wrote a deep essay on Griffith. Griffith was influenced by the God Hand from early age already. The mystic woman who gave the egg of the king to Griffith was actually God Hand member Ubik. Before Griffith used the Egg of the King, he was given manipulative visions by Ubik. I have not studied this super in-depth, because I don't really care about Griffith - altho I can do it if requested.
      But it actually reminds me of the Napoleon quote from Count of Monte Cristo (2002): "We are all kings or pawns of men." and later: "Kings and pawns, Marshal, Emperors... and fools!" as Edmond Dantes (the fool Napoleon was referring to) was sailing away with a Napoleon's letter which would get him imprisoned for life.
      So it seems like Griffith was a pawn in a chess board bigger than he could have imagined. It's ironic: Griffith was using his men - Band of the Hawk - as pawns - while he himself was being used as a pawn by the God Hand. Poetic justice? And no - Griffith is not alive after he sells his soul - your soul will literally be dead after you have done something so evil. Isn't that what the Behelit ritual is about - to cut your ties to humanity?
      I guess what they say is true - Satan is the lord of lies. If you don't stay vigilant and always keep your acts righteous and pure - someone like God Hand Ubik might come and fool you into selling your soul - and your soul dying as a result. Griffith definitely did not put much of an effort to keeping his soul pure.

He actually believes when his men said they'd die for his cause that meant being ripped to pieces and raped by demons to death with no chance of survival.
      Also in the idea of evil chapter he says it's all because 'he wants wings' which is a pretty shitty reason to kill like 100 people then commit a sex crime.

Too buttblasted to get a real job like a baker or something, that doesn't rely on leaving behind a trail of widowers of the "bad people" in opposing armies.

    Great video, Berserk, specially the golden arc is one if my favorite series. Looking forward to the next part.
    One of the most well told part of berserk is the friendship/attraction between Griffith and Guts.
    Both are lonely people how lacks equals. Guts who has learnt to fend for himself and distrust people, finds someone who he is seeking their approval, to be their equal. While Griffiths sees people around him more as tools for his cause, who first sees Guts as another solider, but eventually someone who makes him loses sight of his goals.
    Would be intressted on your anlysis on that.

  • @REDinitial
    @REDinitial Год назад +28

    I'd be weary of explaining Griffith's actions by using causality as a crutch. This explanation conveniently overlooks the fact the torture of Guts and Casca was completely personal for Griffith. Which is ironic considering this is his first act upon ascending to godhood, when he is meant to have shed all of his humanity. It was tailored for maximum damage on both parties in order to punish them and to regain control, not necessarily because fate demanded it despite how it eventually shapes future events. I think this is a point that Miura labours quite heavily to drive home - that Griffith did everything wrong. Doing right is almost never easy on the individual, he gave in, while Guts struggles on.

    • @kvltovpersonality6290
      @kvltovpersonality6290 11 месяцев назад

      This. While the sacrifice of the band of the hawk is within that Machiavellian mentality, what he did to Casca and Guts was clearly personal. And him doing that is ultimately his weakness... when Griffith lets his personal feelings get involved, he fumbles. He did that when Guts left, going to Charlotte immediately as a means of comfort, a slipup that resulted in his capture and torture by the king. Similarly here, he tortured Casca as a means of torturing Guts, but this resulted in two things: 1) it gave Skull Knight enough time to rescue them, and 2) it resulted in
      * BIG SPOILER*
      the demon child being born, which then fused with the egg apostle while Griffith was being born again. Griffith, as a result, is fused with the demon child, turning into him whenever a full moon happens. Meaning that Griffith is at the behest of the whims of the moonlight child for that moment.
      When Griffith takes things personal is when he's at his cruelest, but also when he's at his most emotionally weak and vulnerable

    I just love this manga, it is my favourite piece of fiction. The careful psychological profiling of Griffith and Guts, the use of Jungian psychology, it's themes of struggle against all odds and the renunciation of extreme rationalism and utilitarianism in decision making in favour of "doing the right thing", the refusal to shy away from concepts such as sexual abuse and child SA and making it integral to its characters, the exploration of the plight of women in the form of Casca (not to mention having a female protag of colour in the 80s), the cosmogony, the Eastern philosophies, the pseudo-medieval setting and Miura's amazing art just speak to me. I think it is very telling when a woman in her late twenties such as myself finds herself identifying with Guts the most out of the plethora of fictional characters I have been exposed to over my life.

He has promised to not veer off from what the author shared with him even if that means the story and the characters won't be quite as fleshed out as originally intended.
    We have already had a couple of chapters done under this team up. Griffith/Femto is not helping Guts and Casca. It is their child who is doing so and Femto has no say in the matter.
    In order to inhabit the Physical Realm again he gains an incarnated form, his new body being forged within the Egg Apostle who also took in the corrupted foetus which was the child of Guts and Casca. A child who had until that point protected his parents at his own peril. Both Femto and the foetus are reborn inhabiting the same body, this rebirth essentially removing the corruption from the child. But the Moonlight Boy is strong enough to gain control of this body only on nights of the full moon (hence his name), when we are told that the membrane separating the physical plane from the astral plane is especially thin. At any other time, Griffith is in the driver's seat, but on these nights he is along for the ride - and the fact he shares a body with the exact child who has thus far risked his own life to protect his parents will be his undoing.

    So, the argument of if Griffith did something wrong or not hinges on whether or not you believe in fate.
    My interpretation of the story so far is that fate is a lie and therefore Griffith is bad/wrong for his actions.
    "Fate" in the story is giving up your personal agency to a "higher power". The band of the hawk members put their fate in Griffiths hands and it got them killed. Griffith put his in the God hand and is now a demon like them. Griffith uses the excuse of fate for his machiavellian actions.
    Demons want humans to believe in fate as it takes away human agency and makes them believe they are helpless against it.
    Griffith, at his weakest and lowest moment, chose NOT to struggle and accept the lie of fate as an easy out. He could have rallied the band of the hawk again and started over, even as his members wanted. Instead he chose the shortcut of accepting demon power and losing his friends and humanity under the guise of fate.
    Guts, the struggler, doesn't believe or accept fate as an out or excuse for his life and actions and is a representative of humanity and our struggle to better ourselves.
    Basically, I think the story is pro-freedom of choice and anti-fate. There's a lot of other examples to consider and reflect on in the story like the internal struggle with the beast. He fights against it and it is inherent to him (fate?). But will he give in or fight to the end?
    These are just some scattered thoughts I'm jotting down on my lunch break but could definitely be expanded upon.

    Also like all-round stoic philosophy in this manga, it basically say don't be like Guts or Griffith, don't let anger and hate consume you(inner demon) and don't feed him and on other hand don't chase something you don't have but enjoy for what you do have in this moment.

    Philosophy threads! Fascinating. Griffith has made a city-state of near perfection. Plus or minus the demon army. The appearance of the city itself....that's Griffith's only chance to not get bodied.
    Guts will see the city and have the only thing that can stop him on his own.
    It is perfection....until he releases his demons to eat anybody again.

    The Moonlight boy is the Fetus that used to torment guts, transformed after the sacrifice for the new world. He is Guts and Caska's unborn son, tainted by Griffith's demonic seed. He became something else after the merge of fabrics. And... he might be the key to defeat Griffith.
