  • Grand Trunk Western (Detroit Toledo and Ironton and Detroit and Toledo Shore Line) trains in Michigan summer of 1983.
The 1980s was a period of transition for the Grand Trunk Western. Absorbing both The Detroit and Toledo Shore Line and Detroit Toledo and Ironton railroads. There was an aborted attempt to bring the Milwaukee Road at some point, but it went to the Soo Line in the end.
This is standard definition footage that I shot with the family video camera. During that period, I shot a lot more color slides than video because the video camera equipment of the period was pretty heavy (the camera was separate from the video cassette recorder and had a cable running between them), the nickel cadmium battery packs didn't last long, and the quality wasn't great. The equipment was also probably very expensive and my using the camera on the side of the railroad tracks was probably not what my dad had in mind when he bought it.
I noticed that a majority of the cars that made up the trains were owned by railroads. These days, it is rare to see a rail car owned by a railroad, although that may be because of where I live now. Most of the cars I see on manifest trains belong to leasing companies, many of them have the old railroad owners marks or numbers painted over.
Grand Trunk Western Railroad manifest train passes Lapeer, Michigan lead by Detroit Toledo and Ironton GP38AC locomotive 215 at the east end of the passing siding near the Main Street grade crossing.
    GTW SW9 switcher 6119 (ex-DTSL 119) GTW GP38-2 5859 (Ex-CRIP 4377) DT&I GP9 986, GTW SW9 6120 (ex-DTSL 120) moving DT&I GP40-2 422 on the turntable and into the roundhouse, GTW GP38-2 5861 (Ex-CRI&P 4379), SD40s 5902 and 5922 at Flat Rock, Michigan Yard.
Detroit and Toledo Shore Line GP7 locomotive 44 switching in Flat Rock, Michigan yard.
Grand Trunk Western southbound manifest freight lead by GP38-2 5825 (with GP38-2 5831 and GP9 4430 trailing) passes Holly, Michigan near the East Sherman Street grade crossing. At the time the depot was derelict now seems to be restored. The old steel signal bridge has been replaced with a modern signal bridge now.
Grand Trunk Western westbound manifest freight lead by GP38-2 5835 (with GP38-2 5834 trailing) passes Attica, Michigan (probably Larson Road). The tri-light signals in the video are long gone replaced with modern signals.

My old hometown railroad. I went back a couple of days ago but didn't see a train. Take care.
