the main bolts are not exposed to oil galleries. They are a straight threaded bore into the block, so if you have any residual oil down in the thread bore, it can cause and incorrect/ innacurate torque, possiblly cracking as the bolts tighten. The result of a hydro-siezed bolt is when RTV is not cleaned out from the threads, this can easily crack oil pan bolt threads in the block.
Why put rtv on the old oil manifold when you can buy a new one and not have to worry about getting that crap in the bolt holes? Why use rtv on the oil pan when you can buy Felpro gasket?
a good one. Gotta do my engine since mechanic did not use rv sealant on the centre piece but orange OEM seal only. Obviously it is leaking around rear main seal and dripping on exhaust with oily smoke coming into cabin
I sure wish you had shown doing the rest of the engine! No rear main, timing cover and front seal. I'm not sure if I should pull the heads to reseal or not. Great video on the lower part of the engine though! Thanks
My nephew just done a job on a 2004 v8 North Star he resaled all the gaskets and done more while he were in there he charged the person $4000. When you did yours did you have to remove the rear main seal? And if yes does the crankshaft stay in place or do I have to worry about the timing moving?
We're a main seal can stay in place unless you're gonna replace it replace it and no no you do not have to worry about the timing moving but you do have to torque the crank pulley correctly
I have a 06 STS 4.6, is it possible to reseal the lower crankcase and oil pan without removing the engine? Can you give me some advice on how to do it ? Thanks and great job!!
You can do them in the car, you have to remove the Trans to remove the exhaust, which is just as much work for me anyways. It then takes a while to clean the crankcase to prevent oil from running over sealing surfaces because you would be working upside down. Ive always preferred having it on the stand because it's a cleaner job.
Hi. The case halves on my 11 DTS were done back in 2014 at a GM dealer under warranty and recently started to leak again, thankfully I bought an extended warranty. $4,000 dollars to repair at the dealer once again so what I wanted to ask you was....how long will this fix last?? Another 5-6 years before it leaks again? And, why do they leak once repaired? Is it because the repair is not done right or it's just the nature of the beast? I know all cars have some kind of leak at least all my cars did. My brother has a 2016 Honda Accord with 32k miles on it and even that motor has some minor seapage. Thank you much. Very nice video.
Once you have the case half removed there will be no tension on the broken bolt threads in the block. It's surprisingly simple, just take a small pick to it and it will easily spin out. To prevent this next time, tighten each bolt after loosening each one, then Crack each bolt loose again and run them out. This lowers the pretension on each bolt so as not to snap any.
i dont believe the main bearing bolt threads are exposed to any oil galleries. Northstars will have as low as 8psi of oil pressure at idle, so a leaking or faulty oil sending unit may signal less than 8psi and set off the "low oil pressure, shut engine off" at idle.
Hello Kevin, last night I did the reseal on my wife 2010 dts following your video and using procedure supplied by dealership parts associate. Question, when I took the main bolts they where very hard to take them out now when install new ones only 15 ft lb plus 65 seems to me that they are not tight enough. Can you explain please?
The bolts have a higher break away torque during removal due to carbon/oil deposits on the threads from heat cycling over time. Its a distinct smell from the old bolts during removal.
I had white smoke come out vents inside the car smell like a burning smell umm I want to know could that have been oil dripping on the exhaust manifold or blown head gasket?? Please help me out

Great video professor. I learned so much. Thx
Love the duct tape trauma bandage!!!
Man. I'm taking the OE seal out and replacing it with a gasket. That sealant has swelled and caused a massive oil leak right over the exhaust pipe.

Great. Can this be fixed in a 07 with the engine in the car ? Thanks !

I've had three Northstars. I just wanted to actually see what the culprit was.
Have you had any problems with the car? Thanks

Engine out only unfortunately for us
Damn I wish you were close to me. I got a leaky girl. How much do you charge for a reseal on these? Thanks!!
Does it matter if I use Permatex Ultra Grey RTV or Ultra Back sealant?
Do you use gasket sealer if I use gaskets instead of rtv?
Can this be done with the engine in the car if I can have the crank stay in the same spot.

I have only seen a few of the reseals leak after 50k miles or so, none of which i did personally.

If you use permetex right stuff sealant it will never leak again this fucking sealant that GM has is fucking garbage
Hello Kevin, I'm doing a 2003 deville oil plenum and broke one long bolt from the oil manifold.
What are my options?
How did you get the bolt out?

How many hours does it call for to do this job
19 for the lower end reseal only
32 for head gaskets and lower reseal

Will a broken bolt cause low oil pressure on the bolts u torque to 15 than 65 degrees.

The camshaft cover gaskets are common to leak right onto the exhaust manifolds, so yes they will cause an oil burning smell
Where did you buy the bolts from
They are the GM bolts that come with the head gasket kit. I have used Fel pro head bolt also
