As an Orcadian, I'd like to be the first in the comments to say "Welcome to Orkney!" I hope you manage with the winter, if you've not been to Orkney in wintertime, it can be a somewhat daunting experience for those not already used to hurricanes and the horizontal torrential rain that goes with them :) All the best!
Thanks Dan, we lived for 3 years in Shetland in the 80's so we know all about the winters. Actually we were just in Orkney for one week so will not experience the winter.....thank goodness.

you are so lucky to be able to live there, Orkney is paradise. When my Mom and I visited, we met a husband and wife on the ferry and they told us that we would cry when it was time to leave. They were absolutely correct. We ran into them as we were leaving, with tears on our faces. They said they had been trying to find us the whole time we were there because they had a present for us. They remembered when we were leaving and decided to come to see us off and give us a momento. In my home I have an Orcadian rock painted by this gentleman, depicting "Sunset over Brodgar," and signed Shug T., 2002. They must be angels - they shone like the sun with love. I know my Pictish ancestors came from Orkney. My soul is still there in the sky that seems so close you can almost touch it. The sea looks like rippling, crinkled aluminum foil at midnight when people surf. When we were there we could still stand within the stones at the Ring of Brodgar. It is magical. Orkney is truly home. Best wishes for your lifetime there.
Orkney is just a very special place, we were just heading there for a holiday, not a permanent move. Tricia went there often as a wee girl so it brought back some special memories.
Hey there! We are planning to do a very similar thing. After living down south for most of my life and moving to Cumbria almost 12 years ago, we constantly explore Scotland. We are yet to go to Orkney but are planning a few days in 3 weeks in our campervan. Cant wait :)
Hello You Three - greetings from Poland WOW! - you're back! You've made my week. Thanks so much. A wonderful video. Full of superb camera and drone shots, historical information and of course ball play with Keira. I'm so pleased you're enjoying Orkney. A very well earned rest for you both after the ups and downs of the last year. Also, I hope everything goes well with the house sale. Stay safe please and I'm really looking forward to your next video.
Thanks Michael, it's great to be back and in such a beautiful place as Orkney, it's a place we have wanted to visit for many years. Things moving forward with the house, there will be an update on the next one cheers 🍻
Have you ever been to Scotland your self? I moved to Scotland almost 17 years ago and it is gorgeous place on earth. Ideas for trips, travels, hikes and walks are endless. Ideal place if you are a curious and active person. But on the other side you can find here peace of looking at mountains and the sea.
Thoroughly enjoyed our 6 week visit to Orkney back in 2013. Our Canadian daughter lived there at the time. 6 weeks was the perfect amount of time since half of the visit was spent indoors due to horrendous weather. Haha. Nice to have a refresher with your vlog.
The weather can be fierce but we were very lucky, and glad that we gave you a wee reminder of what it's like there when the sun does actually shine.👍🐾💕
I just got back from a trip to Orknay and Shetland. We saw all the sites you did but my favorite site was the gorgeous heather! The scenery of the Shetlands was even more stunning so I have to say it was my favorite of the two.
Loved seeing you out and about … interesting ice house history and lovely community parkup …. Similar to latheronwheel harbour not to far away Wow that’s an old site at 3100bc Great video thanks for sharing and producing
Thanks Stew & Jane, we were thinking it was like your Latheronwheel video, how great it is when a community makes space available for visiting travellers. That pizza restaurant we visited was doing a roaring trade to the vans parked in the bay.
Wow this takes me back i lived in Orkney as a teen, I lived on Sandy but stayed in the hostel in Kirkwall for school I sang many a time in that cathedral in the school choir. I always say that when you leave Orkney a bit of your heart stays with within the Islands.
Orkney was our first long trip after we acquired a van, Toyota Granvia, in 2011. We took the same ferry and stayed at the same site. Loved the bathrooms rather than a shower block. I recall a small radio museum in Kirkwall which I found interesting. I seem to remember crawling in the tunnels at Skara Brea, so perhaps covid stopped that. Another favourite was the Tomb of the eagles. Out on a cliff top a short walk from a farm. You used a skate board to pull yourself in and out lying prone. Perhaps the views of Scapa Flo from the hill behind Kirkwall remain most vivid in my memory, seen beneath dramatic clouds it was magical and atmospheric. Good luck with the sale and move.
Thanks Melvyn, we really liked the site, great having individual little bathrooms and not just cubicles. We didn't get to the radio museum since we had Keira with us. So many ancient historic sites, we didnt get to them all, really wanted to go to see Meas Howe but it was fully booked. We will definitely go back in a year or so.
Just found and subscribed to your super channel guys..... you're both so natural in front of the camera and great at the editing! Orkney looks incredible.... don't know when but maybe some day in our newly self-built Peugeot Expert mini-camper. All the best from Ireland 🇮🇪
Hello friends a nice upload and how glad you must of been your move went well. Camping is so much fun always use a listed one. The beach in Orkney lsle looked amazing and such fun you had with your dog. Thanks for having us along Simon and Beth ❤️🙋👍🇬🇧
How lovely to see you're back!!!! A very interesting vlog, the ferry crossing with Keira and all the other dogs dogs, all the history lesson about such a long time ago and the fun on the beach... Thank you for sharing so much beauty....
Hi Diana, always good to hear from you, it was great to get away from the house for a while and Orkney is an amazing place to have a break, and we have been so lucky with the weather 👍🐾💕
Hari OM Well, I hope by now you have had good news! My sister lived and worked (and married) on Orkney for several years, and I visited her there in the 1980s... and was able to walk inside the rooms at Skara then. Also around the stones of Brodgar. I have never forgotten the aura of those places... or the wind!!! Great to see you (and Maggie-van) oot and aboot again. YAM xx
Hi YAM, things were a lot more relaxed in the 80's for sure, but I guess all the tourists these days mean they have had to put all these controls in place. We have had news on the old place and will share on the next one 👍🐾💕
Hello from Yorkshire 😀 ..Just stumbled across your fab wee channel & really enjoying it ! My partner & I have built our own campervan - Munroe Mobile ex BT van .Lo❤️e Scotland you are sooo lucky to live there 🤗
Hi Melanie, so glad you found us, you must be so excited to have finished your van. We do feel lucky to live in Scotland but to be fair, the whole UK has fabulous places to explore. All the best with your adventures 👍💕🐾
"Bum bags"! Ha! 😅I'm going to have to steal that one! I had no idea you had such ancient sites in Scotland. I'm glad to see Orkney takes its beer so seriously. Thanks for taking us along!
If you want to totally relax then it makes a lot of sense to book a campsite. There is always the risk of a stressful time on the wild camp route. Enjoyed that. Look forward to part 2 👍
Great to see you out & about again, this is our first comment since watching you in chronological order from the beginning, one or two watches per night, almost as exhausted as you are. Lots of useful tips & trips in anticipation of our new vans arrival any day now. Good luck with the move. Keep em coming eh 🍻
Thanks Andy for watching our back cat, you must be so excited about getting your van. We always get excited when a trip is coming round, and the first one is always special, so we really hope that it's everything that you have been dreaming of. Best regards, Mike & Trish .....and Keira👍🐾💕
Hello Mike. Lovely to see you, Tricia and Keegan. You all look well. Enjoyed seeing this corner of Scotland. Good luck on getting the right offer soon on your house.
We’ve missed you - glad you are back. We went to Orkney about 20 years ago with our (big) caravan. When we got to the ferry, the guy said to me, “just reverse up alongside that lorry and then you’ll be ready to reverse onto the ferry”! Well, I nearly had a heart attack! Reversing alongside the lorry was no problem but…. I think he was having me on (as a woman driver) - I think they were always going to reverse on themselves! Btw things weren’t regimented in Orkney then, probably changed due to the influx of more visitors. Good luck with the house sale. Have a great time in Orkney and stay safe and well. 💕🐾
Hi Irene, that would not have been easy in the caravan. You are right, things have changed a lot especially with the historical sites where understandably they have controls in place as there are so many tourists now. Thanks for watching 👍🐾💕
So good to see you three again. Missed you. Selling your home. Does that mean nothing but traveling from now on? Enjoyed the sights. Did not know Scotland had so much historical monuments/sights. But it stands for reason. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for sharing and hope to see you 3 again soon. Take care and travel safe.
Hi Sandi, we will be moving into another house and then we will be able to start travelling a lot more. We really are spoiled here in Scotland for historic sites👍🐾💕
So nice to see you. We go to Wales in 2 weeks . Think we we will see some of the places you have visited on your tour through Wales. Greetings from Germany.
Lovely to see you all again, Trish’s memories of Scara Brae sound like so much fun, just what I would have been doing.. mind you given half a chance I would be scrambling through those tunnels now.. but I’m not sure my knees would thank me.. looking forward to the next episode, I do look forward to your videos so much..
Thank you so much 👍🐾💕, it's my knees that would be shouting no at me, but I loved running around as a wee girl and playing houses and getting up to mischief 🤣
So enjoyed your video thanks. We didnt know about Pentland Ferries and being allowed to have your dog with you upstairs, The need to leave her in the car or a kennel has stopped us going but thanks to your very informative video, we are on their website and looking to book next year when we can :) Cheers for the info.
We wouldn't have gone if it hadn't been for Pentland Ferries, they were really good and all the dogs were perfectly happy, we are sure you will love it there 👍💕🐾
Fabulous wee place. If you haven’t, you should read The Silver Darlings by Neil Gunn. Great read. Inver campsite at Dunbeath was where we bumped into you a couple of years ago.
Hi Alan, yes we remember meeting you there, we found the park up at the bay while at the campsite and it stuck in our minds as a good wild camp spot. I think the restaurant does a roaring trade from the campsite and the wild camping spot.
Great to see you back 😎 Hope you’re not waiting too long for the house to sell. Orkney looks lovely, the buskers were fabulous 😎👍 Lovely memories Trish had. Keira has got some skills 👏 Thanks for sharing, Em 💛
Hiya Trisha, you look really well hope you’re enjoying your van-life . I just stumbled across your channel and couldn’t believe it -had to do a double take 😊. All the best (Aly D)
Hi Aly thoroughly enjoying getting away in the van. Hoping to a lot more of it next year after we move house. Hope you and the family are all well. Enjoy watching - Tricia x
Another fine video, Mike. I get a great sense of sharing your experience from it. Lovely to see so much of Keira too! Last time we visited Orkney, there weren't so many restrictions about keeping to paths, but I guess that's just a consequence of increased visitor numbers and the need for preservation. I hope the house sale goes well.
Hey Janet, glad you found us. We love Scotland but we love Liverpool too, especially the water front, we could wander round there for hours and have spent many hours in the Cavern over the years.
Welcome back we have missed you all. Great video, loved all the history you told us as well. Hope all goes well with the house sale and look forward to the next video.
Hi 👋 lovely seeing you and it’s been a while beautiful area and that pizza looked amazing didn’t it! A little wet slats brae looked amazing! Thanks and see you again 😊
It's lovely to see you both again and in the words of that song.." Thanks for the memories" took us right back to Orkney. We we were there in 2017 you were allowed right up to the stones, but they were working on it and there was lots of that bright orange plastic fencing in parts.. totally ruined any chance of getting a decent photo. Hope it all goes well with your house sale 🙂🐕🚙
Thanks you two, its a shame that they need to put all these controls in place but I can also understand the need to protect such important sites. Hope you are both keeping well, Mike & Trish 👍🐾💕
Great to see you back, hope you enjoy your trip to Orkney. Also hope everything with the house goes okay for you. Looking forward to to the next video. ATB
Do you have a dab aerial on your van? We have a proace conversion too and I think the aerial has either been removed or is inside the spoiler/wind deflector above the windshield. Either way we have very poor dab reception and have to resort to playing radio through a phone app.
Good afternoon I hope you are both ok fantastic camera work a bit disappointed that you have not mentioned the price of your ferry crossing and the price of your campsite stay and the price of your groceries compared to where you shop on mainland of Scotland but other than that well put together video from a lovely couple and also would you recommend people to move two of the Orkneys it sounds a wonderful place and what are the property prices compared to the mainland of Scotland once again thank you for a fantastic video kind regards from in the borders of Scotland well done
Hi Colin, thanks for watching and for the comments. Sometimes we get caught up with just being on holiday and forget to mention these things, will take a mental note to do that. It was just a break for us and not moving there permanently, but we loved it during the time we spent there and would definitely recommend it as a holiday.
Hello from Wisconsin. Haven’t seen you guys for awhile. Hope you enjoy your time in Orkney, I know I certainly did, however I did find it a bit barren of trees. Where I live is forest. The history there is phenomenal. Can’t remember if there were any distilleries there
Hi there. Just doing a bit of catching up on some of your older videos, a question regarding the ferry at gills, is it a roll on roll off or did you have to turn on the ferry and come off the same way as you went on? I was on it 20 odd years ago and for the life of me, i can't remember how we came off it 🙄🙄
Yeah. Looking at the video, that would make sense. I was just trying to imagine all those cars and vans trying to do a 3.2 turn on the deck of the ship. I don't think that was the same ferry we were on . I'd need to look out the old photographs. Remember those thing's 😄. Thanks for letting us know, my girlfriend was a bit concerned about it as she will be orkney bound in July. 👍
Lynn here on Hubby's phone mines playing up 😏, Hi you two , not seen you since the meet up with Life's Too Short 🤗, can't believe your going to live in Orkney WOW !,😲, Wants the houses like there ?, I imagine them being all small holdings 🤔, where abouts do you live now ? are you in a town ?, Awww I just love your Dog , so cute 🥰, The views in Scotland are so lovely , nearly as good as where we come from Yorkshire 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, only Joking 😃, Take Care You Two xx
Hi Lynn, we are not moving to Orkney, just a short break, but we are selling up and moving to another house. It's a great place to visit and we have been really lucky with the weather. Thanks so much for watching 👍🐾💕
@@MikeandTriciaOotnAboot excellent. I plan on building my channel around visiting the Isles , hopefully putting my own twist on the visits . I live on "Mainland" Orkney so will be easier for me to travel with my family and dog also.
When I saw that title I thought you were moving to Orkney.. A winter of darkness up there and cool, windy summers would make you rethink... Worth a visit but living there permanently requires a certain way of thinking... I never understood the anti drone thing.. Maybe if 30 people were running drones it might make a problem but otherwise.....
If it hadn't been raining I think I would have put the drone up, they can't stop you flying over, they can only stop you from taking off and landing in their space.
Hi Alyson we will be moving into a bungalow, we couldn't do full time vanlife, we love the van but not full time, we like our home comforts too much 👍💕🐾
Wow, so nice to see you again! hello from Kansas USA! You two are such a cute couple and of course, Kiera too 💕.
@@MikeandTriciaOotnAboot 👍💕🐾
So good to see you three again. Missed you. Selling your home. Does that mean nothing but traveling from now on? Enjoyed the sights. Did not know Scotland had so much historical monuments/sights. But it stands for reason. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for sharing and hope to see you 3 again soon. Take care and travel safe.
Hi Sandi, we will be moving into another house and then we will be able to start travelling a lot more. We really are spoiled here in Scotland for historic sites👍🐾💕
You're back! Hello guys, so good to see you.
Thanks Suzanne, good to be back and what a lovely place Orkney is 👍🐾💕
So nice to see you. We go to Wales in 2 weeks . Think we we will see some of the places you have visited on your tour through Wales. Greetings from Germany.
Come and visit Caernarfon
@@vwtransportersandmotorcycl3729 we will do👍
Thanks, we loved Wales and glad that our videos have shown you a few places to go, and there is so much more that we didn't have time for.
What a lovely surprise to end my busy working evening. Looks like a great trip xx
Thanks Linda, it's an amazing place here and we have been so lucky with the weather 👍🐾💕
We have parked up in that harbour. It is a lovely place to park up.
Aye it's a cracker of a spot. Hope you are both keeping well. 👍💕🐾
So glad to see you guys back...Great content as well...Best of luck...
Thanks John, good to be back 👍🐾💕
So glad to see you back.
Thanks Jacqui, it was a short break for us but felt good to be away again 👍🐾💕
Great to see you back 😎
Hope you’re not waiting too long for the house to sell.
Orkney looks lovely, the buskers were fabulous 😎👍
Lovely memories Trish had. Keira has got some skills 👏
Thanks for sharing, Em 💛
Thanks Em, Orkney is fab and so much to see for such a tiny remote island.
Orkney looks great, good luck with your house move.
Thanks Brian👍
Welcome to Orkney! I hope I see you when you’re here..❤🎉
Thanks, we love it but we only had a week and we are home now but there will be another short video to come 👍🐾💕
Lovely to see you .you are living my dream .
Thanks Michael, hope it comes true for you 👍🐾💕
Hiya Trisha, you look really well hope you’re enjoying your van-life .
Lovely video guys, good luck with the house sale.
Cheers John, it has been a bit stressful selling the house so great to get away for this break. 👍🐾💕
I enjoyed your video, pleased you are back 👋👋👋
Thanks Susan, it's great to be back on RUclips 👍🐾💕
As per normal lovely video 👍 thanks WBV
Cheers James 👍🐾💕
Another fine video, Mike. I get a great sense of sharing your experience from it. Lovely to see so much of Keira too! Last time we visited Orkney, there weren't so many restrictions about keeping to paths, but I guess that's just a consequence of increased visitor numbers and the need for preservation. I hope the house sale goes well.
Thanks Donald, yes its a shame about the restrictions but can understand why. It didn't spoil our enjoyment too much, I suppose it's for the best.
Good editing with the cut ins whilst the buskers played :-)
thanks DJ, the guys were very good so we just let the camera roll for a while 👍🐾💕
Just found your channel I love Scotland, love from Liverpool you are so lucky I hate living in a city.
Hey Janet, glad you found us. We love Scotland but we love Liverpool too, especially the water front, we could wander round there for hours and have spent many hours in the Cavern over the years.
Hi, recently found your channel...enjoying watching your past vlogs and looking forward to watching the rest of your trip in Orkney, enjoy x
Hi Beverly, glad you found us 👍🐾💕
Great video, I’ve never been to Orkney so it’s on my wish list when we get back to Ayrshire. Glad your back 😊
Thanks Elizabeth, hope alls well with you two. It was a short break for us and back to the upheaval of changing houses.
What a lovely vlog…thank you👍🏻😁
Thanks Kevin, we had fun making it 👍💕🐾
Welcome back we have missed you all. Great video, loved all the history you told us as well. Hope all goes well with the house sale and look forward to the next video.
Thanks Debbie, good to be back, we are still a bit wrapped up with the house so it was good to get on the road again 👍🐾💕
Hi 👋 lovely seeing you and it’s been a while beautiful area and that pizza looked amazing didn’t it! A little wet slats brae looked amazing! Thanks and see you again 😊
Thanks you guys, we didn't need to eat for a day after that pizza 🤣
@@MikeandTriciaOotnAboot lol 😆
It's lovely to see you both again and in the words of that song.." Thanks for the memories" took us right back to Orkney. We we were there in 2017 you were allowed right up to the stones, but they were working on it and there was lots of that bright orange plastic fencing in parts.. totally ruined any chance of getting a decent photo. Hope it all goes well with your house sale 🙂🐕🚙
Thanks you two, its a shame that they need to put all these controls in place but I can also understand the need to protect such important sites. Hope you are both keeping well, Mike & Trish 👍🐾💕
Fingers crossed for your house sale!
cheers guys, fingers, toes and everything else 👍🐾💕
Hello from Australia 🤩🚐we’ve just found your channel 😊🙏❤️great video just subscribed 😊😊
Hi guys, glad you found us, will check out your channel, we may be visiting Sydney next year.
Fantastic video
Cheers mate👍💕🐾
Great to see you back, hope you enjoy your trip to Orkney. Also hope everything with the house goes okay for you. Looking forward to to the next video. ATB
Thanks John, it was good to escape again from the house and Orkney is a fantastic place to visit 👍🐾💕
Do you have a dab aerial on your van? We have a proace conversion too and I think the aerial has either been removed or is inside the spoiler/wind deflector above the windshield. Either way we have very poor dab reception and have to resort to playing radio through a phone app.
We get good dab radio reception but I don't know where the aerial is, like you say, may be hidden away from view.
I am the proud owner of the whiskey t shirt. My current flavor of the day is Auchentoshan😋😋😋
Ah yes I do like a wee auchentoshan, my current bottle is Highland Park (when in Rome and all that).
Thanks guys 👍😊❤️
Thanks Peter. Loved Lord of The Rings by the way ( bet you have had that loads of times 🤣).
Hello from Wisconsin. Haven’t seen you guys for awhile. Hope you enjoy your time in Orkney, I know I certainly did, however I did find it a bit barren of trees. Where I live is forest. The history there is phenomenal. Can’t remember if there were any distilleries there
Hi there, it sure is barren, nothing much to stop the wind but we have been lucky with the weather. The whisky here is Highland Park.👍🐾💕
@@MikeandTriciaOotnAboot oh yeah. I remember stopping there, in 2018
Hi there. Just doing a bit of catching up on some of your older videos, a question regarding the ferry at gills, is it a roll on roll off or did you have to turn on the ferry and come off the same way as you went on? I was on it 20 odd years ago and for the life of me, i can't remember how we came off it 🙄🙄
Hey, I was on it last year and I can't remember 🤣 but I think it was like a horseshoe shape, you drove on and looped round and off the same way.
Good to see you both again. Missed you. Why selling your house? Moving to another place??
Hi Hans, yes moving to another house, hopefully this will be our last move👍🐾💕
you'll love it.
Just a pity we didn't have longer but we will definitely be back 👍🐾💕
@@MikeandTriciaOotnAboot excellent. I plan on building my channel around visiting the Isles , hopefully putting my own twist on the visits . I live on "Mainland" Orkney so will be easier for me to travel with my family and dog also.
OMG i thought you meant the van for a second there.
Ha ha, no chance, Maggie is here to stay 👍💕🐾
When I saw that title I thought you were moving to Orkney.. A winter of darkness up there and cool, windy summers would make you rethink... Worth a visit but living there permanently requires a certain way of thinking...
I never understood the anti drone thing.. Maybe if 30 people were running drones it might make a problem but otherwise.....
If it hadn't been raining I think I would have put the drone up, they can't stop you flying over, they can only stop you from taking off and landing in their space.
Fantastic parking place in Dunbeath did you not try the wee seafood shack.? We did it was lovely.
Didn't see a wee seafood shack, maybe it's not there any more, but the Bay Restaurant was amazing.
Haven't finished watching yet, but where will you live after your house sells? Van life 24/7/365?
Hi Alyson we will be moving into a bungalow, we couldn't do full time vanlife, we love the van but not full time, we like our home comforts too much 👍💕🐾
Did my heart good seeing the Ukrainian flag. My Scots side is in total alignment with my Ukrainian side. :)
When I saw the flag I had to film it. God bless all in Ukraine 🇺🇦
I envy you, it's what I want to do if ever the money.
Wow, so nice to see you again! hello from Kansas USA! You two are such a cute couple and of course, Kiera too 💕. I hope your house sells quickly for you, but where are you planning on moving to or are you RV’ing it full time in the future? Anyway, hope to see more of you three and the Wee Broon Van. 🤗🤗
Thanks you guys, we will be moving into another house but should have more time on our hands next year to get back out on the open road👍🐾💕
