@@berzuhrk I think the main difference between the first movie and book is how they escape the maze. There is a cliff that is really close to the entrance of the maze and it looks like open sky. They figure out thats where the greivers come from, and so they jump into it, and thats how they escape. The scorch trials and death cure are insanely different, so I would read the books. They aren't hard reads (I read them in early middle school), and they are pretty good. If you still want me to try and list all the differences though, just lmk

Yep, I Love that take on the Trop, and is one of the changes I didn't like about the movies, they tried going backwards in the 3rd by using the Insane aproch and saying the Virus evolved and now it does spread by air, but it was too late imo. I can forgave them for at least trying to rectify that, but well, it is what it is.
Yeah but it's hard to track that and fit it into a 2-hour movie which is why they kind of amped it up. To me this is one of those film series where you can just fill in the gaps by reading the books because they didn't stray as drastically as other film series have
Dylan O'Brien really makes the chase scenes in this franchise so visceral feeling. I don't think I've seen a gritty chase scene before the Maze Runner movies

I was struck by lightning. I don’t remember at all what happened but my friend was in the room and he told me. This is what he said happened: I was washing dishes and the house was struck by lightning. The electricity went through the pipes and into my hands. I fell down unconscious and got taken to the hospital. My heart was still beating but I was in a coma for 3 weeks. When I woke up, I didn’t remember anything except the smells from the hospital room from the last 3 weeks. The doctors told me I was struck by lightning and I was terrified. I lost all my hand-eye coordination and couldn’t walk or move my arms properly. I had to relearn how to walk and to move. I’ve had a lot more side effects since then.
I think this counts, but the car I was sitting in got struck by lightning. Was out jet skiing in Lake Ontario (Toronto) and a big storm came by. Went to wait in the car and like 10 seconds before the lightning struck, the car radio turned off and the hair on my arm stood up. Was one of the loudest sounds I ever heard and completely blinded me. The grass and tree in front of the car was also burnt. 10/10 would recommend
@@patrickoconnor6893 ah I realize I worded it badly. It blinded me when it happened and took a couple days to go back to normal. Eyes are back to normal now since this was about 3-4 years ago
the sound of thunder is actually a sonic boom caused by the air particles in the direct path of the lightening being instantaneously super heated causing them to expand so fast that their rate of expansion breaks the speed of sound. since this is happening along the entire lightening bolt it is super loud and travels super far. anything in close proximity to the lightening strike can be hit by the expanding air and be sent flying. luckily the area that is affected by the expanding air isn't all that wide, but if you are close enough to feel that blast you are probably also going to get hit by the lightening.
I absolutely love the nicknames Alex gives some of the characters. Aris being 'Stripes' and Brenda being 'Twelve' and Ava Paige being "White" is hilarious 😭😭😭
What I found funny is that he remembers Newt from Nanny Mcfee and not Jojen Reed from GOT. It shows that people don't pay enough attention to Bran's story.
We learn a number of things during "The Scorch Trials." We learn that the immunes can treat the Flare, but they can't cure it. The whole idea behind the Trials is to create something like engrams in the brain which would alter the brain's chemistry and so the enzyme which is used as a treatment. The idea is that if the right combination of engrams is produced through the Trials, which are complex, terrifying and potentially deadly puzzles to solve, a cure might be found. It's the trilogy's McGuffin, so you can't read too much into it, however. When Thomas and the Gladers arrive at Jansen's facility, none of the immunes is a cure. At Jansen's facility, Phase Two begins. Phase Two consists of virtual Trials which explains some of the headgear on the immunes. Simultaneously, the enzyme is extracted directly from their brains. Presumably this is for efficacy testing as well as use in treatment. When one of the boys from another Maze tells the Gladers that those chosen by Jansen are going to a farm, he's right. They're going to a "farm" to be harvested because they're the crop. In our hero's adventure-journey, Teresa clearly represents the monomyth's temptress who tries to derail Thomas. She doesn't tempt Thomas with sex, but with arguments both logical and emotional advocating WCKD's viewpoint. It's reasonable to suspect her from the very beginning. Unlike Thomas, she completely broke the Glade's paradigm. Her arrival in the Glade is untimely, she's female, and she heralds the end of the Glade's supply lifeline. Totally inauspicious. Kaya Scodelario does a good job of making her character seem suspect from the get-go. There always seems to be a mistrust-invoking aura about her. In the "Scorch Trials," she tells Thomas "Everything was fine until you ...." This implies she never approved of whatever he'd done. Thomas' drug-induced dream-vision at Marcus' party makes it clear Teresa wasn't part of Thomas' betrayal of WCKD. Thomas acted alone. The longer Teresa is in contact with Thomas through the first two films, the further she seems to move away from him. This begs the question of why Teresa was sent to the Glade. In the first film, Thomas himself even asks her if she's sure she doesn't remember more of her past life. Does he have some subconscious suspicion about her? There are interesting parallels between Teresa and Thomas. Both Teresa and Thomas are betrayers. Which one is evil depends on your answer to the films' theme: Does the end justify means? They both want a cure for the Flare. However, Teresa/WCKD are ruthless in pursuit of a cure, willing to sacrifice however many immunes it takes. Thomas, on the other hand, is completely altruistic. He will sacrifice himself but not the unwilling. In the second film, the purpose behind Thomas' questioning by Jansen was to ascertain whether Thomas has been rehabilitated and can be brought back into the WCKD fold. Thomas clearly was a very important and a valued asset to WCKD before his fall from grace. If he'd passed Jansen's test, he would have had his memory completely restored like Teresa. After Teresa's memory is restored, it's increasingly clear Teresa completely agrees with WCKD's objectives and means. She even begins subtly showing disgust or animosity towards Thomas. Her reaction as she looked at the handheld radio at Jorge's base sealed the deal. She is going to betray Thomas. The only question was under what circumstances, although you might assume it'll happen when the maximal harm will be done. Teresa is a villain. Teresa clearly didn't care about what would happen to the Right Arm personnel. In fact, we know she considered betraying Thomas et al. at Jorge's when she hesitated to release them from their upside-down restraints. We know she did take the radio at Jorge's. So, she could have alerted WCKD before they got to the Right Arm camp and prevented unnecessary bloodshed. It's almost like she was waiting until they found the Right Arm. Indeed, Teresa is so invested in WCKD she clearly wanted the Right Arm eliminated because it is a threat to WCKD and to any potential cure as she saw it. She regards the immunes as lab rats and as a means to an end (the cure). She doesn't really care about them as people per se. She cares more about Thomas because he was a valuable resource (medical doctor/researcher) to WCKD formerly, and she wants him to rejoin WCKD because he might find the cure. Basically, Teresa and WCKD are one and the same. The reason why both Thomas and Teresa were implanted with the mantra "WCKD is good" was to prep them for reintroduction into WCKD. Since WCKD can control memories via its brain implants, it wanted to wipe Thomas' memories of his opposition to WCKD while making him think WCKD was pursuing the proper course with regard to finding a cure to Flare. This didn't work with Thomas, however, because he was able to remember WCKD wasn't good in his view. Thomas even tells Jansen he knows how WCKD attempted to manipulate him into rejoining when he says: "Let me guess, WCKD is good" as he and the others are escaping. At that point, Jansen realises Thomas is a lost cause as far as WCKD is concerned and gives up trying to persuade Thomas. In "Scorch Trials" we discover why Thomas was in the Glade. He'd betrayed WCKD to the Right Arm. Specifically, he informed the Right Arm about the locations of all WCKD's facilities. Presumably, Thomas was sent to the Glade in lieu of immediate death because he was an immune, and WCKD didn't want to "waste" him. His WCKD tag readout at Jorge's did say "To be killed." On the other hand, since Thomas was the best and brightest of the immunes, WCKD may have hoped he'd serve as a catalyst for the Gladers and bring the experiment to completion quickly. Thomas volunteered to go into the Maze. After his betrayal of WCKD, Thomas was given the choice by Dr. Paige: Shape-up or ship-out. Thomas volunteering is also consistent with the Theseus Myth. It's clear from what both Jansen and Ava Paige do and say in the second film that they want Thomas back in WCKD if possible. Thomas clearly was important before the Glade, and his importance doesn't seem to have diminished. What does Ava Paige say at the end of the first film: "Thomas continues to surprise and impress. He may be the key." There's an especially interesting scene near the end of "Scorch Trials." WCKD has seized control of the Right Arm base because of Teresa's treachery and is ready to evacuate the immunes and kill the Right Arm personnel. Thomas, who had escaped, surrenders himself. This is really an act of desperation. He has a bomb, and he's trying to make a bargain with WCKD. He suspects WCKD wants him. This is confirmed by Jansen who says: "Where's Thomas?" He might not like Thomas at this point, but he wants him alive. Thomas threatens to blow himself up unless Ava Paige/WCKD releases the immunes, but Ava Paige rejects his offer. Here's where Thomas being selfless to a fault has created a dilemma. If he kills himself, he accomplishes nothing. Yeah, he escapes WCKD and probably frustrates their purpose, but he doesn't save the others. Saving the others is his goal. As always, he doesn't care about himself. When the others indicate they are willing to die, too, to escape WCKD, Thomas has a tough choice to make. Does he kill them all? This is a kind of mercy-killing, and although TMR champions self-sacrifice for others, it's uncomfortable with the concept of mercy-killing. Again, yes, if Thomas kills them all, they escape WCKD, but Thomas really wants them to live and live free from WCKD. If he relents, then they are all under WCKD control. He obviously doesn't want that, either. That's the dilemma. The choice should be the one that's the closest to the actual objective. That must be life, of a sort, under WCKD. While there's life, there's hope. But that doesn't seem to be the direction Thomas is inclining towards. Very out of character for Thomas. Clearly, he's struggling with what to do, and we don't often make good choices when emotions are high. Teresa and Ava Paige plead with Thomas to relent. Ava Paige even tells him "Everything can go back to the way it was." Teresa said basically the same thing earlier. This is what WCKD has always wanted, of course. In other words, Thomas can have his memory back and rejoin WCKD. She meant it, too, because Ava Paige was actually a foster mother figure for Thomas. He is her prodigal son. The brutal killing of Mary by Jansen coupled with this counteroffer from Ava Paige, which probably tempted him, may be what was pushing Thomas towards blowing them all up. Fortunately, Jorge rescues Thomas from his dilemma. The tragic, tragic irony is that WCKD should have accepted Thomas' offer and let the other immunes go free. "Scorch Trials" is a very good sequel to "Maze Runner."
@@adriannaruiz8717 No, and I only write about things that are intellectually stimulating like TMR. In other words, I don't write much on modern film. Generally speaking, writing has never appealed to me, and it's not my strong suit by far. What you see here are actually excerpts from something much longer I wrote some time ago. Lightning strike story. I worked at a grocery store in high school. One night a storm came in while I was gathering carts in the parking lot. I yelled out "is this the best you can do!?" Then 2 second later lightning struck the ground about 20 ft from me. I felt the ground shake and the Shockwave hit me. Every hair on my body stood up and obviously I ran back inside 😅
Yeah, as the editor noted, I think, it's just an expression and not to be taken literally. 🤣 From A to Z means from beginning to end; thoroughly; completely.
To answer a question that you read on a live stream,(how far from the ceiling does a fly get before flipping upside down?) flys CANNOT fly upside down, so to land on the ceiling they grab it with their front legs and then perform a backflip. You're welcome, lol
Wasn’t me but a good friend of mine was struck by lightning. He was like 15 or so and outside helping his dad with the lawn. At one point he goes to lean up against the garage door and is then struck by lightning. The thing is, is that it was a cross body strike, striking the top left of his body, traveling down and crossing over his heart and then exiting out of his right leg and then entering the ground. This one of the most dangerous ways to be struck by lightning. I don’t remember the rest of the story but he’s perfectly fine now and is in his mid 30s.
I'd assume the reason Aris found out about the ventilation system when he had only been there for a week is the fact hes one of the smartest 4 in the book.
True, although we don't get to see much of Aris in the films, he still comes across as similar to Thomas. He's kind of cute, too. Anyway, it's interesting how the test subjects are kept off-balance at Jansen's. Obviously not all, but most suffer from a kind of ex-prisoners' delusion. They're being manipulated by WCKD. "I'm the reason you're still alive," right? They think they've escaped from a horrible situation, and they're now in this "heaven" where they have nice beds, new clothes, warm showers, good food and the prospect of going to someplace even better! Is it surprising they'd be very accepting in the short term? Not so with Aris and Thomas. I suppose with Aris it was a matter of this is too good to be true, and Thomas is always questioning things. Since they are adept at puzzles, it's not surprising Aris would explore the "maze" of vents while trying to ascertain what's really going-on. When Aris sees Thomas questioning what's happening with Teresa, he correctly guesses Thomas is a kindred spirit and seeks him out. I got a kick out of Aris when Jansen was calling names, he was clearly terrified of being called. Also, WCKD processed new arrivals very quickly while they were still docile. Aris had been there the longest, and he'd only been there a week. Yep, process them quickly before anyone started asking embarrassing questions.
19:31 i have been inside of a car that was struck by lightning. It was very bright and very loud, I couldn't see or hear for a good few minutes after wards.
I have! Well not really me but the car I was in got hit by lightning. I was a cab driver and the lightning hit my CB antenna, went through the car, blew out the radio and the through the ground, made a hole in the asphalt. I didn't actually get anything other than ringing ears for a couple of hours from the sound. The car insulated me from the actual electricity. I might of peed a little...
Such an underrated trilogy. These movies are definitely not perfect, but they're indeed incredibly entertaining and thrilling. Might be a hot take, but it's one of my favourite movie trilogies tbh.
I think it would have been more remembered too if they went with the Book Crancks which is not your standard Zombie infection but people slowley loosing their minds, so they can be womewhat smart with broken logic yes, but a thought proccess still present. It would have been a unique take on the trope for the movies.
@sofialu226 Well I agree with you. The Infected in The Last Of Us were somewhat smart too and people liked it. And if that thing existed in the Maze Runner book, I think they should've followed it. I think I liked the films mostly because I haven't read any of the books.
I have been 2nd hand struck by lightning. It hit the phone pole next to me, and arced off and hit me. I came to about 2 minutes later 5 feet away. I had a headache, but I was on a 20 minute adrenaline rush. Not something I recommend. It really hurts, and can kill you.
Book reader here. I definitely separate them in my head. First movie is great. Rest are entertaing but kind of innacurate. Books are way better than the movies and also WAY weirder you have no idea. They tamed them down for the movies.
While I did like the books, I definitely prefer the films. The books are definitely darker, and a number of things in the books would be beyond the scope of a PG-13 rating.
On a serious note. I was living in Tennessee and the tree right behind our condo is hit by lightning. It split the tree in like in half now the left side grew like a regular tree but the two branches that split only grew white leaves. Like they would have a really hint of green in spots but they were just White. It was so interesting the news came out and they aired it like at 4 a.m.
25:55 Well is kinda true , in the books cranks aren' t really Zombies but infected people who went insane because of the Virus, but it was changed in the movies, probably for cinematic reason . Yeah I had to be that guy😅
4:23 yeah Peter Baelish's actor plays a character in peaky blinders... i don't know if I can call him a "good guy" because everyone there does bad stuff and most are not "innocent" but he is on the side of the main characters and not doing some devious shit.
One of those movies I don't get bored watching and one of the coolest plot points/creatures. I liked how he had a dog companion and he faced his worst fear when the dog was in trouble.
I wasn't actually struck, but the bolt of lightning flew over my head and struck the top of my garage instead. It wasn't blue like you see in the movies, it was purple. You could really feel the force behind it too. The collateral effects were classic, knocked backwards, hair stood on end, skin tingling, pressure in the chest like I'd been kicked. The hole it left in the garage was no bigger than what a large nail might make, yet the power was incredible. Too close for comfort.
Alex you have GOT to watch The Hunger Games films (not the prequel). They are so badass and you will absolutely go nuts for them. They're a combination of everything you love.
mom saw two girls get struck by lightning as they walked across an empty parking lot, making them the tallest point. (so never hide under a tall tree) one sadly died and the other went to hospital. she woke up and cried "why would they do that?!" as she thought someone had hit them in the head really hard...
When I was a lifeguard at Hurricane Harbor we had a bad storm and while getting people inside, two of my guy friends got struck. One I believe has a lightening scar across his chest, and the other up his leg, the water on the ground conducted the electricity.
27:16 there were hurricane parties going on in Florida during Helene and Milton, so when a disaster hits humans do love a good party. It's a decent distraction from the event. Remember in 2012 when everyone thought the world would end and there were insane amount of songs and parties about it.
I haven’t personally been struck, but the house three houses down from ours got struck. Our house shook like a small earthquake, everything rattled, and the neighbor who lived in the house next to it was flung off her chair. Luckily no one was home because the house got gutted by the fire.
@@jack_the_beanstalk he isnt lol. Minho gets his by lightning, Jack was the kid who dies in building where a bunch of cranks are he just disappears and in a deleted scene we find out he was killed there
I haven’t been struck by lightning, but I had a math teacher that was, twice. He even had the boots he was wearing the second time, had a massive hole melted through the sole of them. And he had the scarring from both, and because they happened long enough apart, one set was darker than the other, so it looked like a badass tattoo where they overlapped
In the movies they just made the cranks zombies but in the books they are more like functioning humans that talk and have motor skills but are like hyper aggressive and canabals kind of
just saw a couple of videos from Tyler Bell, going over how people did scenes that included archery and getting shot with arrows before CGI, pretty cool stuff, just thought I should mention his channel, pretty cool dude. edit: I can see why these movies are so loved by many, the set pieces, the sound design, the choreography, its all so incredibly made.
Movies u should def watch: The Adventures of Tintin - Stephen Spielberg Lord of the Rings - Peter Jackson Psycho- Alfred Hitchcock The birds- Alfred Hitchcock The shining- Stanley Kubrick
As someone who read the books, I do like the movie as it is but I wish they would have made the cranks like the book version. They make them like they are zombies from the last of us, which they are supposed to be cannibalistic. But they are driven insane from the flare, and they actually speak in the books, making them so much more creepy.
Honestly, I had read the first book and part of the second, and I didn't hate the movies. There were some *BIG* changes, but most of them I could kinda see why they made those calls; certain things would be really hard to adapt and fit into a movie. I can't remember too many specifics, cause it was a while ago now, but I distinctly remember talking with my friend that had read the books (all of them), and the two of us agreeing about this opinion.
While these films are new to the reactor, they're not new films. They've been around for a while. However, like you, I never tire of zombie/zombie-like stories. Ditto vampires, werewolves, hostile aliens etc. They do have to be well-done films, though. TMR trilogy is extremely well done.
I've never been struck by lightning, but I was about 20 feet from a tree that got hit by ball lightning once. It rolled on the ground, blew a large hole in the side of a house and went in and blew up the TV. The tree was split in half and I had tinnitus from the boom for about 5 years after.
Interesting. I had something similar happen to me, but it wasn't ball lighting, which is, supposedly, an even rarer phenomenon. I was by a very tall tree when it was struck by lightning. Totally out of the blue, by the way. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been standing by the tree. It was extremely loud, deafening in fact. It zippered the bark off the tree from the top to the ground, and I could smell it burning. Too say it shook me up is an understatement. Another time, I was in my apartment and lightning must have struck the power line or connection. Again, both a flash and a tremendously loud bang. A repeat of me on the floor/ground. It destroyed all my electronics. Later, i took my tv apart and all the bits after the power cord were nothing but powder or black splotches. Actually, I've had three close calls with lightning.
As a person who has both read the books and watched the films, both are great but the changes they make in the films are 100% for the better, really great decisions and changes and directing and they're all just BANGER I could go on abt them for hours (except for there only being two mazes I did like that in the books more) BUT OVERALL MOVIE CHOICES MADE ARE GREAT
I’ve been struck by an electric fence.Trying to avoid the muddy path and then the shock made me fall straight into what I was trying to avoid😂The pulse went through one arm across my chest and through my other arm.Probably not the same as lightening, but I love to get involved.😊
I would actually recommend a reaction to the compiled blooper reel for these movies! Probably the most hilarious outtakes for a franchise that I've ever seen
Never been struck, but a massive bolt hit the building across the street from me, accompanied by the loudest thunder I've ever heard. I swear I felt that thunderclap go through me while my entire vision lit up. It was like the world ending.
First, Alex I love that you are doing The Maze Runner Series! Second, to the editor, I petition as well for Alex to watch more horror movies cuz his reactions are HILARIOUS!!
19:22 i wasn't struck but very close. When i was 11, i was camping with friends. We would spend thurs-mon camping at the same spot & date each year since i was 6. Every sunday there would be a thunder & lightning storm. We are positioned in a grass field just a bit smaller than a football field, trees around the edges, and a river to the left & back of the field *if looking from the road*. I brought a meta teatherball pole & planted it in the center of the field. I had an idea to have my friends & i try to bottle flip a plastic water bottle up onto the metal pole. This is when there was rain & lightning. The next thing i know is i was 4 feet from the pole & it struck the pole. I saw white for around 30+ seconds and can't hear anything besides the loudest ringing I've ever heard.
I read the books, and don't mind the movies as, like a different comment said, I can see them as separate things. But there is one thing from the books that I wish they would've kept. In the movies, the Cranks are basically zombies. Mindless. In the books, while they were often injured and dirty which made them resemble zombies, they were people slowing losing their sanity. While they eventually reached "the Gone", where they were much more like their movies versions (but even those ones spoke),a lot of the Cranks they encountered weren't. They would talk, laugh, threaten and even cry as they chased the group, depending on how far gone they were. Some people in the cities would be infected but seem completely normal except that they were crueler and more paranoid. Those, in my opinion, were scarier than the ones completely gone. I think the book's Cranks would be much more interesting, especially if they added the one Brenda and Thomas encountered in the tunnels who lead a group. "Rose took my nose, I suppose..."
The "Nooosse" persecution is still the most terrifying part of the whole saga imo, the fact Those cranck were smart enough to act as if they were gone for so long to create a feeling of safety to try and catch Brenda and Thomas is so scary. That together with the begginig of Scorch Trial with the dark tunnel and the Metal scarb thingies that took you head were terrifying
was struck indirectly once while fishing. The lighting struck the rocks I was standing on, and apparently there's a lot of metal in those rocks cause the electricity ran right through it and up my legs making me collapse. Nothing worse than that happened tho. Was just surprising as hell

Went to wait in the car and like 10 seconds before the lightning struck, the car radio turned off and the hair on my arm stood up. the sound of thunder is actually a sonic boom caused by the air particles in the direct path of the lightening being instantaneously super heated causing them to expand so fast that their rate of expansion breaks the speed of sound. since this is happening along the entire lightening bolt it is super loud and travels super far. anything in close proximity to the lightening strike can be hit by the expanding air and be sent flying. luckily the area that is affected by the expanding air isn't all that wide, but if you are close enough to feel that blast you are probably also going to get hit by the lightening.

He may be the key."
There's an especially interesting scene near the end of "Scorch Trials." WCKD has seized control of the Right Arm base because of Teresa's treachery and is ready to evacuate the immunes and kill the Right Arm personnel.

Wow, that is why I don't taunt the thing that can kill me😅, but glad you weren't struck.

To answer a question that you read on a live stream,(how far from the ceiling does a fly get before flipping upside down?) flys CANNOT fly upside down, so to land on the ceiling they grab it with their front legs and then perform a backflip. You're welcome, lol
I LOVE that this comment has over 50 thumbs up, lol
Wasn’t me but a good friend of mine was struck by lightning. He was like 15 or so and outside helping his dad with the lawn. At one point he goes to lean up against the garage door and is then struck by lightning. The thing is, is that it was a cross body strike, striking the top left of his body, traveling down and crossing over his heart and then exiting out of his right leg and then entering the ground. This one of the most dangerous ways to be struck by lightning. I don’t remember the rest of the story but he’s perfectly fine now and is in his mid 30s.
If that is true, then he is incredibly lucky to be alive. Wow
@ yup still has the scars where it entered and exited his body.
@@letsgaur.15 Damn, that's nuts

Honestly, I had read the first book and part of the second, and I didn't hate the movies. IMO there's not enough GOOD zombie/infected movies! I feel like we need a zombie renaissance
That Uncle Phil reference was so fitting lol
As a person who has both read the books and watched the films, both are great but the changes they make in the films are 100% for the better, really great decisions and changes and directing and they're all just BANGER I could go on abt them for hours (except for there only being two mazes I did like that in the books more) BUT OVERALL MOVIE CHOICES MADE ARE GREAT

OMG YESS I LOVE THAT YOU REACTED TOTHE SCORCH TRIALS NOW PLIS FINISH THE WHOLE TRIALS CZ PPL ONLY SEE THE FIRST TWO
was struck indirectly once while fishing. The lighting struck the rocks I was standing on, and apparently there's a lot of metal in those rocks cause the electricity ran right through it and up my legs making me collapse. Nothing worse than that happened tho. Was just surprising as hell
