It was only later, after the Trade Federation had created a monopoly on all goods traveling between the Outer Rim and Core Worlds, that they saw this as a problem.

But jar jar got such a TERRIBLE review and everyone hated him so much that George Lucas had to go back and find a new big bad. That's why Count Dooku literally popped up out of nowhere.
And the biggest fish is always Death, no matter the terms of your endearments. And no sense of Doom will complete you, or compel you to gather up new instant visions.

When Luke first met Yoda, he did come off as a badly written comic relief character like Jar Jar, only to be revealed later to be the Master Jedi that Luke was seeking. Can totally buy the idea that the prequels meant to have an evil inverse of that type of character. Tho the reason why Yoda works is because his Twist was revealed in the same movie he was introduced in, while it pretty clear that if they are going to do a big twist with Jar Jar it would have been in the next 2 movies. This Theory came out just before the release of The Force Awakens, and some people speculate that they may incorporate the Darth Jar Jar Theory into the new Trilogy. Not sure Jar Jar would work, but having the main villian being a loose end from the past movies would have been better than bringing back Palpatine

In Star Wars: Age of Republic Special, at one point Jar Jar gets his hands on a lightsaber and proves to be VERY competent, saving Captain Rex with it - only to then fumble it in the most forced and unnatural way possible as though he was trying to hide his competency with the weapon of choice of the Jedi... and the Sith. Another piece of evidence happens much later on, after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Jar Jar is working as a street performer on Naboo and is befriended by a young boy. Jar Jar eventually takes the boy on as his apprentice - Sith style. The mind trick and eye color claims are easily refutable window dressing (Jar Jar's gesticulations were done just to make him look alive, and all Gungans have those putrid yellow amphibian eyes), but it's his competency with a lightsaber and practice of the master-apprentice relationship iconic to the Baneite Sith that solidifies the theory.
While I enjoy the Darth Jar Jar Theory I saw it more likely that he was a Sith sympathizer of sorts. With some training in the force but not a Darth. Just enough training to be a useful tool for Palpatine.
