you can really tell how SM strategizes by looking at how they sought for the current members of nct dream. markrenhyuck were the gems among the thousands who auditioned with them, people who audition are known to work hard and dream big, their work ethic really shines even today, years after they’ve debuted, it’s no argument that they are 3 of the many aces or allrounders in nct. among dream, these 3 feel like they have the strongest desire to stay on top of their game, constantly wanting to improve performance quality. at that young age, both chenle and jisung already had extensive experience with singing and dancing, so if SM had them as trainees, they would’ve already secured a main vocal and main dancer to debut in their “fresh and youthful” new idol group. they kind of placed their bets on jeno and jaemin, who were street casted which meant they presumably had no familiarity with singing nor dancing, although i’m sure they weren’t the only potential trainees who were street-casted, they were lucky nomin were already good enough to have passed the audition after they were casted; and had the attitude and adaptability (and athleticism) to develop their skills as performers quickly, to match the rest of the lineup who also had the innate talent and interest in becoming a celebrity. we all know SM has a sh*t ton of hidden trainees in the basement so it wouldn’t be a surprise if other kids around the same age group, those who didn’t make the final cut, trained with the 7 boys. (heck it wouldn’t be a surprise if hendery was once considered to debut in dream, considering he was a trainee even before chenle officially joined the agency) when they were rookies, nct dream (or to be more specific, mickey mouse club lineup) were once called 아기신기. this name was a parody of the famous SM idol group/kpop pioneers 동방신기 (TVXQ) who had the reputation of being the “gods of kpop”. I’m only assuming this, but this may have implied that, among the average seasonal number of 60 male trainees in SM (minus NCT U and 127 members because they debuted before), during the time nct dream were trainees, *they* were the aces, *they might have made a new milestone for trainees who were at their age* not only did they get to post dance covers and appear in variety shows (MMC and NCT life), but they also got to *perform in concerts* (as the literal small children they were) and participate in SMrookies, ultimately securing their positions in the new nct unit. this is written entirely out of speculation (so please don’t attack me)... SM failing to implement the initial system of dream (graduation + adding new members every season) might have been due to the company not capable of finding trainees as skilled as mark, renjun, jeno, haechan, jaemin, chenle and jisung, who, *at that young age, polished themselves to meet the overwhelmingly high standards of the company in such an impressive and speedy manner* (they had to learn how to dance on hoverboards for god’s sake). Even after they debuted, audiences are able to notice their rate of improvement, impressed at the growth they display *in every comeback*. Take one look at 16-17 year old dream choreo and you can tell these aren’t just kids. They’re trained and talented professionals. Superstar material. DBSK's skills were at SM's top-level so being, in a way, compared to them as younger version is definitely something. I wouldn't be surprised if Dreamies dominate SM. Even today, jisung and jungwoo said to mark practice practice stop practicing for everything. Just do it. Mark lee won most hardworking trainee award for 3 years straight until he debuted shows how hardworking mark is, yuta also said mark is super serious while working. Mark lee might be the standard for trainees if they want to debut in sm in any group

It makes sense. School was not closed for no reason it was a planned pro-d day for the teachers. Here in BC usually once a month on a Friday there will be no school for the students but teachers go. It’s called pro-d because they do professional development, so classes and training for teachers and it will be district wide. The school calendars are usually published for a district in late august for the next school year. If your at SM and planning a global audition in BC and not doing it on a weekend it makes sense to use a day when kids won’t be in school so you get the best turn out possible for young prospects. I imagine they’d have looked at their schedule of when they wanted to hold them and also what the local school districts are doing and planned from there. We are just lucky that he found out about it and decided not to do what most kids do on a free day from school, either study or go hang at the mall, but rather go audition.
it's crazy because if you look at each of dreamies individually, they are already talented enough to be the lead/main of a group if they were to debut somewhere else and that says a lot. i hope that they will continue to get the support and opportunities to further flourish and put them out there to a wider audience. and as a kpop fan of 10 years, i can see shinee in them (like i am not comparing them in terms of skills or popularity, but the success and vibe), like i can see the immense potentials in them to continue to grow and put out good performances even years into their career like shinee does

As great as it is to see young people achieve their goals at a young age, I've never liked that they debuted so young. It's one thing to start training early, but debut? Because SM's main goal is to make money. And it ain't ever sat right with me to put young kids into the professional spotlight to make money, no matter how capable and prepared they are.

As great as it is to see young people achieve their goals at a young age, I've never liked that they debuted so young. It's one thing to start training early, but debut? Because SM's main goal is to make money. And it ain't ever sat right with me to put young kids into the professional spotlight to make money, no matter how capable and prepared they are.

No, From what I know, they are paid by SM. Then during their debut they made compensation
