    The Golf R's Haldex does not send 100% power to the rear. It sends 100% of the available power to the rear, and the available power that can sent to the rear by the Haldex is 50% of total power. That's how the system works. If it did as the lady says, it would be going from a FWD car to a RWD car, and not from a FWD to an AWD car (as the Haldex transforms it to be when needed). So, no. Not 100% of total power goes to the rear. That's just wrong. Ask Audi\VW or Google it.

      I hate when they say it's not active all the time.
      latest haldex is really good. its always active when you engage dsc to sport mode.. only time that ive seen it unactive is driving in eco mode and even then it engages in milisecond if it senses something fishy...

    • @longbowdt

      +lamazver "fishy" as in fishtail? :) Seriously, Vicki isn't the first to post an inaccurate description of how the Haldex performs. Somehow the true function gets misunderstood by some reviewers which can mislead the unknowing.

      +lamazver The STI has a driver selectable center diff that can send more power to the rear in sports mode or auto which is neutral. It has a lot more driver and track worthy goodies than the Golf R. If you want better luxury features and more comfortable car. Golf R + DSG is the way to go.

    the turbolag is not due to engine configuration as much as to the fact that the golf has a twin scroll turbo while the sti does not. it's also direct injected

    I've owned my Canadian spec 2016 VW Golf R DSG for 4 years now. I'm glad I chose it over the STI. Reason being, it's a better daily driver. Any track performance that it lacks compared to the STI, It gains in daily drivability. It should be noted that the Subaru has a larger engine with more horsepower than the Golf R. I dunno why Fifth Gear claims identical HP specs. 292hp/280tq Golf R and 305hp/290tq STI. 2.0L vs 2.5L.

    • @xIcarus227
      @xIcarus227 4 года назад +4

      Both cars officially make 300HP. Regardless, the VW does more than they say so it's actually the opposite of what you're saying. And the S3 makes even more than the R even though it's supposed to be the same engine with the same output.

    The FA20DIT in the WRX doesn't suffer turbo lag. You have torque from 2000rpm to just before redline. But the FA20DIT has a twin scroll turbo, direct injection and equal length headers. Where the old EJ257 in the STI doesn't have a twin scroll turbo and unequal length headers. That's the cause of the lag, but a twin scroll requires the equal length headers

    I have R MK7 and my buddy a 2015 STI...his Subaru is raw (in a good way) but consistently struggles to keep up in a straight line. The 7 is very easy to drive fast and the adjustable dampers allow you to choose your weapon for whatever type f driving you're doing. They really are two very different beasts. The quality of the Golf is great - inside and outside - the gearbox is a gem. The subaru's charms are all hidden other than the noise. The interior is horrible, we both agree on that.

  • @hindeshotelra
    @hindeshotelra 8 лет назад +2

    The reason for lag in the euro spec Sti is not due mainly due to layout of engine but because it has a single scroll turbo. The Golf R has a twin scroll turbo which ironically Subaru are renowned for in their 2.0litre Japanese JDM models. Subaru really needs someone with a bit of brains to decide what configuration of cars we receive outside of Japan.

    • @Mrlolibre
      @Mrlolibre 8 лет назад +3

      It's not really "brains" as the issue ,but it's more so emission regulations that they have to adhere to and also they have to consider the quality of gas that the United States has with 91 being commonly used while 100 octane is common in Japan. That's why the Japanese STI has a different motor than the United States STI.
      Of course Subaru could pull a VW and lie about the emission ratings ,via a cheat software/computer chip. 😄

    Big difference between receiving two cars for free, taking them on your own to a race track and blasting around it, or going to a dealership with your own money and buying a car that'll you use 99% of the time on normal roads doing normal things.
    Going to a track for a couple hours, if I had a choice I'd go STi as it will be more fun. But I'd take the R home. No hesitation.

NO, have not driven either one and have only seen a Lambo in person. I am sure if the design called for Torsen, VW would not cheapen out on a Halidex. Note I am not saying Halidex is better, it's what the the design called for. In the end it's how the car drives and feels.

      +Andy. Andy I see many STI up here in Canada and I haven't seen a single Golf R since they became available. the truth is the Scoobie is more reliable and perform a lot better in slippery conditions such has rain and snow with low temperature. The Golf R has a better interior and is a more approachable car for everyday people, it has an automatic gearbox.

      I've seen other tests that show the opposite. On a dry track the Golf could keep up if not beat the STI. But the Haldex system has the major drawback of not being nearly as good in slippery conditions since the rear wheels aren't always doing the work. Why Volkswagen put a legitimate full-time AWD system on my 2004 Passat but not their Golf R is beyond me. I love Volkswagen but they make some really odd decisions.

    Attributing the STI's greater turbo lag to its flat-four layout is inaccurate.

    • @BroadbandWatchAustralia
      @BroadbandWatchAustralia 4 года назад +1

      It's quite true though. The exhaust has to travel a lot further around the tubular exhaust manifold before reaching the turbo (and the EJ especially has the turbo placed up high and quite far away, much further away than on the FA20DIT), as compared to modern inline fours like the Golf where the turbo is bolted directly to the cylinder head.

    I miss my old STI. I couldn't get on with the Golf, which is a shame as it's a really good car. The STI just felt intuitive. The only other cars I've driven that have that, extension of the body feeling are the old Integrale and Caterhams (I do not get to drive every hot car though :) )

    To Vicki - Subaru is not 4WD.. its AWD. 4WD is what you call when you have a part time system with a 2 speed transfer case ( hi-lo ratios). AWD is when you have a power going through all 4 wheels either all the time or intelligently transferred by the ECU based on steering input, tire slippage etc..
    Not that I'm a pro, but these terms often get mixed up among peope

    the turbo lag from the sti in comparison to the golf R has much less to do with the engine layout (flat vs inline) than it does do with the R having a twin scroll turbo. so, maybe add that to your video

  • @noelpaz4517
    @noelpaz4517 7 лет назад +3

    I'n stick form the R is actually very nimble in real world driving. I live in Valley Center CA and I've driven the R and a friends WRX, in the roads around here during the very wet rainy season. The speed limit on the shoulder-less rough hill roads is already a not very safe 45 mph, add some rain and move the clock to 10 PM. I felt safer with the R and it corners better, there were advisory 25 mph sections that can be taken at 70. Also the cockpit and lighting plus a very intuitive chassis just adds to the confidence. Plus for commuting it has better mileage. So maybe even if the DSG is faster, it will never learn the nuance of hill roads like a human brain can and I think for that visceral connection a manual is the perfect fir for the R.
    I also favor the torsen (Audi - Subaru) system but I have to admit that the halidex although seen as cheaper is actually an evolution in AWD.
    I do like Subarus but it just doesn't communicate to the driver like the VW can.
