0:14 hannah : “ i think its fair to say that GLOBALLY 2017 was a struggle “
Me at 2020 : you think 2017 was a struggle ?
Haha same
True.
Basically my thoughts
Ikrrr
I am from the future. It doesn’t get any better. Also, in less than 5 months, 2020 will be 2 years ago.
I don’t know if this has been said before, but I love, love, LOVE, your voice and the way you talk about books and reading. Most of my close friends don’t really read and it’s so refreshing to see someone else who feels how I feel. Thank you so so much for that because even though we don’t know each other, and you definitely don’t even know of me... you’ve started to feel like a friend and watching your videos is the highlight of my day
I. Love. This.
You're so nice
My top books:
1. The Night Circus (finally i read it this year. Such an epic novel)
2. Turtles all the way down
3. The hate u give
4. Eliza and her monsters
5. Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe.
6. The girl on the train
The Night Circus is amazing - it was my first book of 2018 and I was blown away!!
Hannah, I now covet every book on the list. I swear, if you were a bookshop saleswoman, I would buy all the books in the bookstore that you recommended.
My Top 2:
The Sun is Also a Star
Eliza and Her Monsters
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love both of them too
I LOVE YOUR VOICE IT'S SOO SOFT AND CALMING 😍
Sense and sensibility has been my favorite Jane Austin novel for such a long time 😍 so happy to see others falling in love with it too
just a daily reminder that you're beautiful ❤️
I loved Turtles All The Way Down! I myself don't suffer from mental illness so it's not like I can say how good a representation it was, but it was a brilliant book and my favourite John Green novel so far. I especially liked his ability to deal with important topics like mental illness with respect whilst still writing a lighthearted story with interesting characters that are more than their illnesses but aren't perfect. Great video!
Get you someone that looks at you the way Hanna looks at the books in the thumbnail😩❤️
true😂😂
Yes to turtles! You just gave me so many books to check out, agh! I adore you.
ahh thanks you i have discovered victoria schwab. she is now one of my favorite authors and “a darker shade of magic” was truly enchanting. i felt like i could have read just kell walking around and i would’ve still been entertained.
Strange the Dreamer is PERFECT 💗
YESSSSS! I can't wait for the next book in the series
My top three books were probably all recommendation from your channel 😆 I literally had to buy a book shelf because I discovered Booktube this year.
Jessica Bruce mate me tooo ... altho i am getting my bookshelf next month but it worths the wait😀🤗
Saaammmeeee
Jessica Bruce ii
same i’m so grateful of book tube for getting me back into reading:)
I'm one of these people that doesn't like to read books about their problems or books that are about things they're struggling from ,I like to forget about my problems/struggles and read about something else that makes me feel I'm out of reality and that make me feel I belong to their world and not my actual world ya know what I'm saying? But I feel it's good sometimes (not all the time) to read something that you can relate to,so I get what you're feeling about"Turtles All The Way Down" . Great video btw :)
DON'T MAKE ME CRY, HANNAH (re: your closing message). I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel this year. You're one of my all-time favourite RUclipsrs across all RUclips (books, art, beauty...) and you've reignited my love of reading. I can't express to you how much that means to me. Thank you for all of your videos, your kind words, and your positive energy. I look forward to a whole new year of content from you. Much love, from New Zealand.
Im so happy that I have discovered your channel! I have discovered and read so many great books due to your recommendations. You are so incredibly well spoken, and you are one of the few RUclipsrs who I stop everything to watch every time you upload... Please never stop being you :)
my top 2!
1. Strange The Dreamer by Laini Taylor (SIMPLY AMAZING)
2. Heartless by Marissa Meyer
kittyyourock I looooove Heartless!
a lovely lovely video! truly enjoy when your videos are longer and i can just listen to your descriptions and plan my reading lists. you really are my fave person on youtube right now
Hannah, I've been silently watching you for a while and oh my, I never thought I'd find anyone who loves and feels so deeply about books as I do until I found you and your channel!
I'm so curious to check out all the books you mentioned in this video! Also, the way you talk about them... IT'S A KILLER!! It's the way I talk about them to people, it's a passion we can't contain!
My favorite book of 2017 was One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus, a YA mistery novel. It ressonated with me so much, I was able to link myself to these characters in a way I hadn't done in so long. It was so good and intriguing I had to pull an all nighter to finish it! ... And cry a lot in the process because I connected with one of the characters so, so much. If you like books with great and visible character growth, I think you'll like this one!
Hope you have tons and tons of success in 2018!! Much love from Portugal 🇵🇹
i love watching your videos because i always know that i will enjoy the books you like so i take recommendations for new books from your videos
Ok, a good contemporary book, is Love Letters to the Dead. (the summary style thing) It begins as an assignment for English class: Write a letter to a dead person. Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May did. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to people like Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Amelia Earhart, Heath Ledger, and more -- though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating new friendships, falling in love for the first time, learning to live with her splintering family. And, finally, about the abuse she suffered while May was supposed to be looking out for her. Only then, once Laurel has written down the truth about what happened to herself, can she truly begin to accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was -- lovely and amazing and deeply flawed --
kailey hein This sounds REAALLY good....author?
Kacie Brown ava dellaira
OMFG YES LOVE LETTERS TO THE DEAD ITS JUST SO GOOD !
Hannah you are the absolute sweetest
I love how much I can tell that these books are emotional to you by your voice and you're eyes when you talk about them
I know this video is about your favorite books, but generally, when I watch your videos, I always feel like I want to hear more about both the pros & cons of a book rather than just focusing on the pros.
I LOVE your channel so much!
The way that you talk about Turtles all the way down is just....fantastic and so emotional!
Also I really wanted to thank you for the last year. On some days were I felt really bad I used to watch your videos and listen to you talking about all of those books. It really helped me a lot. Thanks to you I found a new favorite book which is Aristotle and Dante ... . Thank you so much and I really look forward to this new year.
You are such an inspiration to me :)
You are such an beautiful and an gorgeous person.
I wanted to share with you a quote from a book I read in German class which is just so amazing: You don't have to understand the water, to jump head forward into it. ( probably bad translation).
Hugs from Germany.
Antonina
Yes! Thank you for talking about Shadow of the Wind. I kept nodding and mentally cheering as you revealed so many of my similar favorites and I can't wait to read the few I haven't read that you mentioned. I also struggle with generalized anxiety disorder and I appreciate you talking about it :)
So glad that you and emmmabooks are talking about the Diviners on your favourite lists!!!! I read the first on when it came out and my sister and I LOVE them!! Hopefully they get more recognition now that amazing ladies like you two are spreading the word 😊
*adds the shadow of the wind to my tbr because damn i definitely need to read it*
we just start reading it yesterday in my Spanish literature class
the writing is amazing
I has been my favourite book for 10 years now.... It is perfect.
I read the first 2 books in the Darker Shade of Magic trilogy, and loved them! I plan on reading the third one soon. I also read Lord of Shadows and Loved it. My top favorite book of 2017 was either Warcross or Tower of Dawn.
Thank you for posting this and for telling us about these good books!
My favourite book of 2017 was The Book Thief. The kids are so precious and I cried so much at the end. A close second book is The Night Shift. I had to read it for one of my classes but I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. It's more of a memoir rather than a novel, but it was so interesting and it showed a fresh perspective on doctors and the ER.
omg what u mentioned a spanish book (a GREAT spanish book for that)!!! First time this happens since i've been watching booktube - my parents love the book & so does my best friend, also my grandparents lived the civil war and I love anything that talks about that time so WELL pumped to pick it up :)
Thank you, THANK YOU for reading the names in The Shadow of the Wind in the spanish way. This is a wonderful book, and its really important to me, and the fact that you took the time to pronounce it how we do here in spain its really nice of you!
Love your videos and definitely checking out some of these books this year!
My top 3 of 2017:
1: How to stop time - Matt Haig
2: Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom
3: The Gentleman's guide to vice and virtue
Emilie Anderssen Six of Crows 😍
Six of Crows!!! My favorite!!!
I discovered you at the end of 2017 and I'm so glad I did! You were the reason my 2017 got a slightly bit better towards the end :-) so thank YOU!!!
laurel - thank you! That means the world ♥️
I love watching videos like these because most of my friends are not huge readers so I love someone who gives great reviews and in depth what to look forward to. Books to read in 2018
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
I think you are now my favorite booktuber. :)
Eliza and Her Monsters was in my top 5 favorite reads this year! It was soooo good. It was my first contemporary book and I’m so glad I read it. Great video!
Eliza and her monsters is my favourite book EVER !!!! I LOVE the relationship between her and Wallace. Plus I have anxiety so i related to it just like you and honestly watching your videos where you openly talk about your anxiety makes me feel less alone, so Thank you x
(I feel like that was really cheesy 😅 sorry)
Amazing video queen ❤
Your love for these books is so perceptible, so beautiful. It's just delightful to hear you talking about them with the passion you do it. Continue to always stay true to yourself. 💖
Yess it’s out! Was looking forward to this video. Also just watching you get emotional about Turtles All the Way Down made me emotional about it because I felt the same way reading the book. It was like reading about myself in one way or another and I’ve never felt that understood before. Can’t wait to watch your full review on it! 😊
You convince me to read everything you love and I seriously love it. So many of the books I love I’ve read because of you and the ones I haven’t gotten to yet are at the top of my TBR.❣️ i also love The Upside of Unrequited, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, Turtles All the Way Down, Lord of Shadows, and The Hate U Give!!❤️ AND I ADORE THE EMBER IN THE ASHES SERIES WITH MY WHOLE HEART words cannot express how fantastic of a fantasy series it is (you convinced me to give it a second chance bc the first time I read book one I liked it but wasn’t blown away but I was the second time and continued with the series and am so grateful) love you❤️
Your voice is so, so soothing. I could watch your videos for hours hahaha
The way you feel about Turtles all the Way Down is exactly how I feel about Thirteen Reasons Why. I've added Turtles to my tbr because of your review!
Ahh, the feels when you can stop rewatching the old videos to get a daily dose :O And a long one at that!
Hannah, I also read The Shadow of the Wind in 2017 and it has become one of my all time favorites. It's so beautifully written in Spanish! I hope the translator did it justice. And, in case you don't know, TSOTW is actually the first book in a 4-book series. I'm on book 3 right now and OMG it gets soooo interesting. The second book happens before the events of TSOTW, but the third book connects the two of them and will blow your mind!!!
First, I want you to know I absolutely ADORED the night circus. I read it because of how much you’ve recommended it, and right now it’s my favorite fantasy. This video is basically my TBR for the year, your recommendations are awesome
Also, I loved turtles all the way down as well. Thank you for all your recommendations
I’m so glad you finally read the Shadow of the Wind! It’s my favorite book. I finally read your favorite, The Night Circus this year and it is now one of my all time favorites. I’m glad we swapped top favorites this year! It was wonderful meeting you at BookNetFest 😀
The way you are able to describe a book makes me question how anyone could possibly dislike it ❤️
I started reading the darker shades of magic trilogy because of you in 2017 and I completely and utterly fell in love with it! Thank you so much for recommending it. It has quickly become one of my favourite series of all time! 😍Also, I've never even read an adult fantasy before (I'm 15) and I didn't even realise that it was one until I looked it up. 😂 Still, I love it with a passion and think that a lot more people should read it. Greetings from Germany. ❤🇩🇪
I’m reading the first book right now!! It’s so good.
You’re my fav! ❤️ Your reviews are so articulate and concise and literally make me want to read EVERYTHING you recommend! Thanks for being wonderful, Hannah!
I'm so happy you loved An Ember!!! I also read Ember for a school project, and fell in love. Definitely one of my favorite books of the year! I also loved Strange the Dreamer, so magical! And although I don't struggle with anxiety, I too could relate to Turtles, which made it one of my favs. Thanks for the video!!
I’m so happy for you! You’re almost at 100k!!
My goodness, I was not prepared for all of the emotions at the end of this video! You are one of the best booktubers out there, I look forward to every single video you put out. You are such a beautiful and amazing person 💗 2018 is going to be so good to you!
I've just discovered and am currently reading all of V. E. Schwab novels, and I completely agree with you. Her shades of magic trilogy gave me the same feels and escapism vibes that I got when I discovered the world of HP. Nothing has ever compared before & I'm totally sold on her books. I really, really liked the interview you did with her! She's such an interesting and fascinating person and it really came through in your interview.
It’s because of this video that I had to pick up “Turtles all the way down”. LOVED it
I kust want to say you’re my favorite Booktuber and your voice is amazing and wow i keep binging your videos and i bough the night circus yesterday bc you always talk about it!
Hannah, you've really become my favourite booktuber! I love the way you talk about books and I can nearly always lean on the fact that I'll love the books you recommend!
💖
I read the Shades of Magic trilogy because of a video you made talking about them earlier this year. I'm so in love with Kell.
And I 100% agree with the similar feeling to Harry Potter. I couldn't name it either, but I was so enchanted with the world and the story that I had such strong Harry Potter vibes. Glad I'm not the only one who thought that.
I add so many books to my tbr from your videos!!
I’m so happy that I discovered you Hannah. I always get excited when I see you upload and know that my goodread’s list will expand. Your recommendations are wonderful as well as your personality. Thank you for making my 2017 better and brighter.
Also my favorite books this past year have been: The inexplicable logic of my life, Vicious, and We are the ants.
Not sure if you’ve read We are the ants but I highly recommend it! .
I read The Shadow of the Wind because of you and it's one of the best books I've ever read. Thanks girl!
Hannah, you're not helping me. Ugh my to read list is just getting longer everyday.
Honestly, I spent most of this video pausing, going to good reads and clicking "want to read". An ember in the ashes as well as a few others on this list were books that I initially, would have not picked up. However, after hearing you speak about them and loving your previous recommendations, I just really had to. The way you said that a darker shade of magic gave you "the harry potter feeling" it just warmed my heart so much and if it was not late, I would have ran to the bookstore to buy it.
Yes I read the Shadow of the Wind last year too even though I had owned it for years! I absolutely fell in love with it too and couldn't believe I hadn't pushed myself to read it before.
I truly appreciate the time you share to talk about books, I look forward to the videos you post. 2017 was a rough year and I only managed to complete 1 book, House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. My goal for 2018 is 12 books and I am up to a good start. Thank you for encouraging me to read again.
So glad you liked the Shadow of the Wind! There are actually 3 more books in the series: The Angel's Game, The Prisoner of Heaven and I believe the last one, El Laberinto de los Espíritus (The Labrynth of Spirits) hasn't been translated yet.
There are also some very good stand alone books by him that are a bit more YA (Marina, The Prince of Mist). Carlos Ruiz Zafón is one of my all-time favorite authors, I recommend every book!
And I felt touched about all the wonderful things you said about Turtles All The Way Down. I just finished it yesterday and, as you say, while I admit it may not be the "best" book I have ever read, it has ressonated so much with me.
I hope you have a wonderful beginning of semester, and so many wonderful reads this year as well!
Lots of love from Barcelona
That last part was really sweet, I could tell from the emotion in your voice that you meant it, and that your fans and fellow readers are what keep you going this excitedly about reading. I like how you didn't make it the prime moment in the video, it was just about what you knew your followers wanted to hear about, which is your favorite books from last year (god, is it 2018 already? I just want to sleep), and you took the chance to show your appreciation for the things that mean so much to you. It's one of the reasons I love coming back to your videos (you're one of the only few I can keep watching for a long time). It's just all very genuine and sweet. I hope you have a fantastic year, Hannah (hope I spelled that right), and for many more books to inspire and enamor you!
Yes! I'm so happy to see Sense & Sensibility get some love! It's my favorite too :)
I'm totally new to your channel, but I've fallen in love with you already. I've spent my entire life reading books alone, and for the last two or three years I've been wanting to join some sort of book club, but I'm really just unable to at the moment (my anxiety doesn't help lol). But this feels so nice; I've never heard of a lot of the books you mentioned, and I almost all of them on my "To Read" list.
I haven't seen your video on books you plan to read this year, but if I may, I have a couple suggestions. Three Dark Crowns. Yes, I know, anyone who reads this might disagree with me because it is a slow read, but it is eventful nonetheless and the ending is worth it. I enjoyed it so much that not ten minutes after finishing this book, I drove to the store to buy the sequel. My other suggestion is Scythe. In 2017, this book had me entranced the entire time. Recently the sequel came out but I already have like 20 books I need to read and I am just itching to go buy the sequel (too many books come out for me to keep up with!!!). Anyway, it may not be worth much, but I thought I'd leave a couple suggestions because they're both the beginnings of series, and you really seem to enjoy those. :)
It's a little hard to decide, but these would have to be my top 3 picks
1. The Book of Dust by Phillip Pullman
2. In Perfect Light by Benjamin Alire Saenz
3. The Complete Maus by Art Spiegleman
Surata Garratt Maus is amazing on a whole other level
I added SO many to-read books from this video alone. I'm currently reading A Conjuring of Light and I can totally agree that it's my favorite series of all time.
I've been in a reading slump for almost a year and watching this made me pick up my books again, hopefully I can get through this reading slump for good. Wish me luck ^-^
I love to hear from others about the Diviners!!! I loved it so much! What an accomplishment you read the two other books already, what!
I was so much surprised when u mention TATWD as ur top fav.. It really was the best book of 2017 and I loved it too. It felt great seeing you ranking it in the firat spot cuz it deserves it. I have read other books by JG but no other book matches the level of this one even TFIOS which is considered his best book yet. I am so amazed and happy that you preferred it over heavy epic fantasy series or stand alones.
Ahhh the feels at the end 😭 was not prepared. Love you and your channel so much 💜
yesyesyes!! I was actually surprised by number 1 but in a positive way:), as you said this may not be the best book when it comes to writing style or plot but it is so close to my heart as well. I read all john green’s books and yeah i liked them but i’ve never considered them as masterpieces or whatever but with this book ahhhh, i cannot even describe my feelings, i love it, i do and i totally get what you mean!
I bought The Shadow of the Wind a few months ago and you've really made me want to read it. I'm going to read all of Austen this year and I'm starting with Sense and Sensibility, you made me excited about that too! Great video!
I was so excited when I saw you uploaded a new video! I love listening to you talk about your favorite books! You are one of the reasons I started making videos for booktube! You are so inspirational and give the best recommendations! I can’t wait to watch your bookshelf tour for this year!
Strange the Dreamer was my number one favourite read of 2017! ✨
I cheered when Shadow of the Wind came up! Honestly been circling around Victoria Schwab for several years now, might finally read her now
I really love an ember in the ashes and Eliza and her monsters. I read them both because you recommended them. Thanks for always giving me the best books to read !
gurl, your lipstic is on point! Love the color
Thank you a lot! I'm from Russia and I'm studying English with your video. Your pretty voice and your red lipstic are very helpful for understanding language. And your videos are so exciting and interesting - I love them!
I've read so many books that you've recommended since I started watching booktube. Can't wait to read some of these too in 2018!
Turtles All The Way Down is the first book I read in 2018. It was so touching to me. I also have generalized anxiety disorder and I agree, I felt so understood by this book. I buddy read it with an old roommate and it was so refreshing to be able to express how deeply I loved this book without having to worry about spoiling it and also being able to use it to explain to her my experience with anxiety. She was my roommate a couple years ago, so I actually started some of my thoughts "remember that time I came into our room freaking out like this.....this, right here, is what was going on in my head." I've decided that whenever I get into a serious relationship, I will ask my boyfriend to read this book so he can understand me better.
I have only just discovered your channel (why so late? why?!) and I am watching your videos obsessively! I feel like we have really similar taste in books and I'm now making a list of all the books you recommend and which I haven't read yet. Thank you so, so much for making these videos! They're now making the world a better place for me:)
I think my favorite reads in 2017 were...
1. Into The Water- Paula Hawkins (fav)
2. Carry On- Rainbow Rowell
3. Made You Up- Francesca Zappia
That's probably my top 3.
thank you for highlighting the diviners series. i also discovered it in 2017 and HOLY COW IT'S AMAZING in every sense of the word. even though it's set in the 1920s the issues discussed are so relevant today. I agree with everything you said about it. hopefully more people will pick it up
Here are a few of the upcoming releases on my list that you might enjoy:
-The Rogue Queen (Hundredth Queen #3) by Emily R. King (February 13, 2018)
-Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik (July 10, 2018)
-The Winter of the Witch (Winternight Trilogy #3) by Katherine Arden (August 14, 2018)
-Hollywood Dead (Sandman Slim #10) by Richard Kadrey (August 28, 2018)
-Unnamed Book (Prequel series to The Black Mage #1) by Rachel E. Carter (Summer 2018)
I AM JUST ABOUT TO START A CONJURING OF LIGHT AHH! Great video, I love so many of the books you love (so happy to see that you included a Spanish author 😄)
I also read The Shadow of the Wind in Spanish and was without words. I love it so I do understand why you have it as second favourite.
the shadow of the wind is my favorite book of 2017 too and it might be my favorite book of all time! i also loved a darker shade of magic (a gathering of shadows would be on the list too, but i just read it this year) and ADORED strange the dreamer. i already added many of your recommendations to my tbr! (:
I loved Fangirl (perhaps mostly because of the point in my life that I read it) but in addition to anxiety, I think Eliza also deals better with what it is like to be part of a fandom, the second story within the story (because it paralleled with the main story), and also mainly what it means to be a creator and the relationship you have with your work and the pressure you can put on yourself. I thought all of that was done in a really gentle, lovely way. But I cherish my fangirl reading experience a lot more despite all that haha
Oh just you wait till you read A Torch Against the Night. You'll be blown awayyyyy! I swear I, too, cannot imagine a world without Sabaa Tahir's books. 😍😍😍
I love listening to you, your voice and way of speaking is so inspiring and calming
you're my favourite booktuber ever!! keep up the good work 💜 (I feel so bonded with you over our mutual dislike throne of glass)
The Shades of Magic series is so good! I read them all last year and they became some of my all time favorite books.
