Yeah ever since Dropbox dropped unlimited I'm trying to condense my archives too. I have around 40TB spread across like 30 drives since 2004 I'm waiting for a thunderbolt native Synology as Qnap and Ugreen already have direct connect NAS drives without 10gbe adapters. Currently have 2 12tbs Red Plus and will cop more when the right NAS drops
I went from the DS1821+ to the QNAP 1655 and will never look back. Now I'm going over to 45 drives and getting the HL15 and using TrueNas Scale with more power :D
More power? What more do you need then 10 Gbit and power sipping cpu? Fun with faster CPU but the drawbacks are obvious as well. Or is it for even faster Ethernet?
@@christerwiberg1 I actually want more than just 10 GB just for the simple fact of having 6 12k streams if I'm doing multi-angle productions and or if I want to be able to saturate the entire 10gbe because even in this video, he wasn't. Also, I want to run more VMs, smart home features, and servers on this machine without having a bottleneck and with the ability to expand later on without any worries. As far as power, it's not too much, so worried about the electric bill lol it's not that much here.

Thanks so much man! When it comes to file sharing, by default it’s setup to be pretty fast and straightforward and you can simply send links that anyone can click and download like any other cloud service. The caveat however, this default config “public sharing” can be a little limiting on transfer speeds. You can setup a more manual and direct form on connection within the DSM software to give clients of collaborators better access if they’ll be downloading regularly or large amounts of data. It’s a little more tedious to setup but once it’s done it’s ready to rock.
Do you encrypt the data on your NAS? What method do you use? I'm curious because, as a cinematographer, I'm exploring options for secure data storage. If you're using Synology's encryption tools, how do you ensure the encryption key is safely backed up without risking loss or corruption? I'm still figuring out the best practices for this.
I love this video and others like it because it helps me plan for the future. As of recently my budget barely allowed me to get a 20TB WD external HD which will certainly help me immediately however it would also be risky not to upgrade to a RAID system ASAP. Thanks for sharing your experience. I also have a question about a previous video you posted. When you film in 30 FPS and then slow your footage by 80% in a 24FPS timeline, do you ever have issues syncing your dialogue? Or is that a technique you wouldn't normally use with dialogue? I do a lot of filming for action sports and "run and gun" shoots with local businesses and need a good monitor for pulling focus / false color. Looking at investing in a premium monitor that will last years rather than a cheap budget option. I've seen you use SmallHD in some videos, but do you have a 5 inch monitor you'd recommend? I really wanted to like this video, but it just didn't work out. So many misconceptions and so little explanations. 1. RAID does not grow with your needs, you have to plan for the capacity right away(if we are talking RAID 1 or RAID 10) 2. This NAS is not a cloud storage, this is an Internet connected storage case. The difference is that cloud storage is in multiple datacenters, so even if a hurricane destroys one datacenter, your data should be safe as it has to be backed up in a different datacenter. 3. Your WiFi is not fast by 2024 (or even 2022 standards). Fast WiFi nowadays is 2-3 gigabits/s, not hundreds of megabits/s. 4. And by WiFi do you mean just local network or internet connection? That was not clarified in any way. I have even more questions, but I don't want to spend any more time on this comment. TLDR: this Synology NAS is a great solution, but the video about it is from a person that does not dig deep made for people who won't dig deep and may regret the switch decision due to a lack of the subject understanding.
Ryan or anyone reading this comment - do you guys keep the original video? lets say I have a footage of 10 min - out of that I want to keep 2 min.. do you guys keep everything you shoot or you select and delete file by file

And again at 9:30, a 10 gigabit ethernet connection will generally provide maximum transfer speeds of 1,000MB/s (megabytes per second) or 1 GB/s (gigabyte per second), not 1,000mbps (megabits per second). I appreciate what this video is trying to accomplish, but the whole "Speed and performance" chapter in this video should be corrected and replaced.
I have not once got good cloud download speeds. They are utter trash. NAS are not for "cloud" replacements. They are for network attached computers. Not cloud. you will be back to using google drive as anyone not directly connected to your NAS will have less then 25mbs download speeedsss....... yikes
I’ll have to disagree with this! While by default most NAS file sharing setups are configured to be as secure and accessible as possible, this usually results in really poor bandwidth and transfer speeds both client and peer side. I personally have my setup configured with DDNS hosting to give my collaborators direct access via Synology Drive Sync, which yields nearly no bandwidth limitations. My editors are able to download at the max speed of their internet gateway.

@@tazsmith I have a TP-Link Deco XE75 mesh system that the NAS is wired into. I had to go through a full setup process of port forwarding and DDNS addresses to get it functional with my remote clients. Took a bit but works like a charm! @leokeller is international and has direct access via Synology Drive Client and can download my files at his full internet speed.

I bought a Synology DS920+ a couple years ago, but now I'm looking to upgrade. I'm having a hard time choosing between the DS1821+ and the DS1823xs+!
I went from the DS1821+ to the QNAP 1655 and will never look back. Now I'm going over to 45 drives and getting the HL15 and using TrueNas Scale with more power :D

Currently I am not! I will be installing some NVME drives for cache, but frankly have not had any performance issues so far without them

Unless the original video was shot in a very compressed format (≤100Mb/s), no. It adds up very quickly.
Convert it to AV1 and then store it.
All the DNxHD/R footage gets deleted as soon as RUclips has eaten it!
I keep everything for the most part! I’m kinda bad about it. I hate losing original media

For those looking to build NAS, do not use HDD. It's bad in the long run. Instead, use 8TB Samsung Evo SSD.
SSD’s would definitely be the better option for best performance and long term reliability, although pretty costly!
That would be so expensive. You use HDD at a fraction of a cost and if a drive goes bad you throw in a new HDD and you are good to go.
