    I never realised before, but the reason the Blackbird suddenly shows up on Dradis is BECAUSE Starbuck messages Apollo back. It's encrypted, but she still has to transmit a signal and everyone immediately detects it. And because she's still in 'stealth mode' she doesn't have any friendly transponder... so she flags as unidentified. Nice touch!

    Roslyn can be extreme, but I agree with her more often than not. She knows a killer when she meets one! (I don't know if it's intentional, but in the "Buck Rogers" serial and stories, his arch enemy is Killer Caine. There's also "The Caine Mutiny", a famous play and film about a sea captain who may or may not have deserved his crew to mutiny against him). Romance and complicated relationships? Ooooh Boy, just wait!!!

    I love Doc Cottle. I have since the first appearance. It's almost like he's the lead in his own series playing some salty old school doctor and he has no idea about space or cylons. He's just trying to do his job but all these people keep walking in asking for help with all these weird problems so he goes along with it because he's too tired to argue.

    I remember back in your reaction for Water, Kat was cooing "she's so *soft*," about Roslin, not describing her as weak, but how she just sort of enfolded problems like a duvet and hugged them to death.
    And then came the Act of Contrition/You Can't Go Home Again 2-parter, where she went, in Paula's words, "straight for the throat" to get the Adamas to give in on terminating the search for Starbuck. And then came Flesh and Bone: "Throw it out the airlock." Then she lied through her teeth to Helo, promising no harm would come to Sharon when she had every intent of having her executed. And now here, "You've gotta kill [Cain]."
    Whenever Roslin shows the steel underneath the velvet, you both act surprised for a second, and then you remember "oh right she's like that now."
    I'd argue she always was like that. She can be diplomatic and talk softly and be kind, when circumstances allow it, but when she thinks circumstances demand it she makes hard decisions. Back in the miniseries, she left everyone who didn't have an FTL drive behind to die. No matter how it visibly pained her to do so, that's pretty ruthless. And then after leaving behind thousands of people to be massacred by nuclear fire, she gently, patiently talked Adama into realizing the war was lost and running to find some other planet to settle on. Because she can talk to Adama. Adama can be reasoned with. Those Cylon Raiders couldn't be reasoned with.
    Admiral Cain, to Roslin, is beyond reason at this point, and they don't have the force to make her listen--and, so long as she's alive, there will be those loyal to her who won't obey Roslin herself or Adama. Ergo, Cain needs to die.
    Is she right? I dunno. But the funny thing is, to me...okay, you know how when you were a kid, if you saw your teacher at the grocery store it was super weird? The idea of a teacher as a person who existed outside of school was baffling until I was like fourteen. I think at some level the writers played that same trick on the audience. By playing up at the start that she was a schoolteacher--both with people deriding her as that and in the way she dealt with issues, by gently talking to people until they regressed to ten years old and obeyed her like children caught doing something naughty, and maybe even the illness giving her this air of frailty--they baited the audience into thinking that that was all she was.
    But she's a person who exists outside that context. She _was_ a schoolteacher...and also a grown woman with a full history and her own hobbies and dislikes and quirks. *Then* she was a politician trying to set educational policy for a society of 50 billion people. *_Now_* she's the president of the last survivors of a species on the run from an enemy with seemingly-inexhaustible resources. Sometimes some of her old training and thinking comes through, but it shouldn't be terribly surprising when you see her, metaphorically, at the grocery store buying liquor and cigarettes.

    The difference in the assassination plans shows the difference between their commands. Cain knows no one on Galactica will follow her, so she needs to kill the entire command structure. While those on Pegasus only follow out of fear, remove Cain and (almost) everyone else will cooperate with Adama.

It makes sense that she would tell Bill to do that, but it's still one of those lines that catches you off guard. Especially with the way Mary McDonnell delivers it. It's got this energy to it, like she already made up her mind before Cain walked into the room and was just waiting for the chance to say it.

    It's such a big moment for Adama to be able to compromise his principles to order Starbuck to shoot Cain. Not only does it to against everything he believes as a military officer, but he himself was shot in CIC during a moment of celebration by a trusted member of his crew. He's asking someone to commit a crime he himself was a victim of.

      Actually, I don't think it does. Cain is a domestic danger to the Colonial government. It is actually Cain who has abandoned her principals as she is planning a coup against the Civilian Leadership which is why she plans to take out Adama and his command crew, as they haven't abandoned their first principals like she has.
      This is a case where his plans aren't going against his principals, but a DIRECT RESULT of them.

    At the beginning of the series Adama was in the same place as Cain, wanting to continue the war. But Roslin pointed out to him that the war was over. Humanity had been reduced to a handful of survivors who were no match for the Cylons. Their best option was to flee, find a new world and start having babies to rebuild their population. But Cain never got that message. Now she's doing the Cylon's work, killing humans, wiping out survivors and, by constantly seeking fights with the Cylons, serving up her own crew to them on a silver platter.

    • @Educated2Extinction
      @Educated2Extinction 3 месяца назад +5

      I doubt Cain would have been open to that message. It's also worth noting that Roslin came very close to getting the remnants of humanity killed by insisting on focusing solely on rescuing survivors and ignoring the ongoing danger posed by the Cylons. Had Apollo not been there, the survivors she gathered likely would have been wiped out. Roslin and Adama complement each other, but both started out with too narrow a focus. The difference is that they're willing to listen, while Cain isn't.

    • @Sephiroth144
      @Sephiroth144 3 месяца назад

      And it worth willing to note that Adama never once talked about stripping civilian ships or shanghai'ing their crews (or the 'valuable members' thereof); Cain seemed to have no problem nor hesitation doing so- and pretty sure their Civilian Fleet was well outside of the Cyrannus system, so stripping them of jump drives was absolutely a death sentence.

    Of course, since Laura Roslin was (before the Cylon attack) the Secretary of Education (and an actual teacher before that...), that imagery is probably intentional, right down to the "I'm not angry, I'm disappointed. 10:32, that idea is stupid as heck. On this show battlestars are like a mix of an aircraft carrier, ballistic submarine and a battleship. Also they can operate without support for extended periods but NOT forever.
    In the real world when an aircraft carrier leaves port it is accompanied by several smaller ships (i.e. cruisers, frigates, subs, destroyers) that each have a function in the overall mission. They form what is called carrier battle (or strike) group.
    In the original show the Colonial Fleet had only 12 Battlestars to protect the human race. Due to Ronald D. Moore's real life US Navy experience the fleet in this version has literally hundreds of Battlestars each with its own strike group.
    So Caine wants to take back 12 whole planets with only 2 battlestars... yeah right. Starbuck should have immediately walked out of this room and told Adama "Hey Boss this lady is off her meds".

So much so they called it "Galactica In Name Only" or GINO in short. The showrunners then decided to use this acronym as a name for a character in their show. To throw this in old fan's faces, I guess.

    Cain's plan is what Adama's might have been is Roslin hadn't reined him in: kill every cylon. There is no "what comes after"... kill all cylons is the victory condition. It's the same for the cylons...why are they chasing the fleet? They have agents inside and know the fleet isn't really a threat to them. It's the same for the Daleks, everything that isn't Dalek being dead _is_ the reward. Real wars aren't usually fought for pure vengeance, but that happens in sci-fi wars a lot.

    • @technofilejr3401
      @technofilejr3401 3 месяца назад

      I think the Cylons are pursuing because they are afraid that if the fleet finds a new home planet, they would rebuild and come back as a larger threat. Cylons know how vindictive and ruthless we humans can be.
      In the original show, the Cylons follows the edict that they would not let even one human get away alive. In one episode they showed what one genius level human with resources could do.
      To be honest, despite the Cylons being the bad guys they are right. If it took us several generations we would hit them back. Because we humans would always see the existence of the Cylons as a threat to our survival.

    War is by nature pretty horrifying - going by the contemporary laws and customs of war, what Kane did (in terms of abandoning Pegasus’ fleet) is probably not a war crime. The summary executions on the other hand, probably were.
    Most actions in war, even ones as repugnant as marooning those civilians can be ‘legal’ if the circumstances are right: in this case Kane can put forward a pretty compelling ‘military necessity’ argument as to why it was lawful to seize the supplies; it’s a bit more of a stretch to say she absolutely had to order those executions. Not a war crime is of course a pretty low bar and is not the same as right or justified.

    Your musings prompted a question. On balance, who was the more effective "counselor," Troi or Guinan?

    • @shadowphoenix1696
      @shadowphoenix1696 3 месяца назад +1

      There equal but in different ways.
      Guinan was very helpful to more in the moment problems that people were having.
      Troi was more dealing with people longterm problems

    The Pegasus deck chiefs family was killed. Everyone left behind is dead cause the Cylons probably got them. The 6 on Pegasus name is Gina.

    As far as Head Six being abusive towards Gaius, you have to admit he earns it.

    Traditionally, "martial law" is when the military takes control of civilian society. You wouldn't normally talk about people in the military being "under martial law" because military discipline is just their default state of affairs.
    Also! When Cain orders her XO to "terminate Adama's command," that doesn't actually mean "Kill every single person in the _Galactica_ CIC." Not necessarily, anyway. "Starting with Adama" *definitely does* mean "Assassinate Commander Adama," but the other officers and crew on _Galactica_... _*_might_*_ survive... _*_if_*_ they don't resist. That scene shows Cain planning a coup, not necessarily a massacre (though she has no compunctions against turning it into a massacre, if the _Galactica_ crew put up a fight).

      There was an Admiral Cain in the 80s BSG, tho HE was more of a loose cannon than a calculating control freak. This Cain was more of a nod to the Bible's first murderer. Re "Cain," check out a GREAT indy flick, "He Never Died." Much underappreciated.

      I'm not sure I really understand the point of saying something like this to someone?? It's honestly rude and the "sorry" doesn't really make up for that

      @ross8884 different looks that are *for* me. I don't do them for others. Again, just casually saying sorry after giving an insult to someone's appearance isn't the way. Especially after making a point to compare Paula and I.That is something that you could easily keep to yourself. Comments like this can really affect people's days and the way they look at themselves. Something to take into consideration.

      @@ross8884 again, I'm explaining to you how a comment like that isn't just "silly" and also how it was not perceived in that way. I'm trying to use this as a moment to help you understand why it's not something that's necessary to say to someone.
      I appreciate the support, we appreciate the support. But this is a moment where I'm expressing that a comment like that isn't supportive.

      I'm not sure what else to say or explain. I've tried to express that commenting your dislike on someone's appearance isn't a joke. I did not attack you over it, I tried to have a conversation about it. If you'd like to keep dragging this out and use it as a reason to not like or support us, then that is on you.
