Literally one of my biggest fears. It is so sad, because you think that the flight was safe when you are ready to land, but the flight is still not over. This is a perfect example of not celebrating to early.
If you read the report, you will find that this flight was not in any case safe to land, this pilot tried to do jugaad and get it down, but he messed up bad. There are other factors which you can read in detail.
Takeoffs and landings are the most “dangerous” part of the flights. By dangerous I mean where risk is at the highest. Task management is at its highest and the stress that comes with that. Pilots are juggling many different, critical tasks. Add in possible fatigue, a difficult airport and runway to navigate, nasty crosswinds, possible language/accent barriers between ATC and the pilots - it’s probably that point where risk factors are raised exponentially.
What exactly happened here? They misjudged the runway?
Too early, not "to early".

Reading all these comments about this airport generally being a rough place to land, I’m grateful that I, flying in on an old rackety DC-10 (a kind of aircraft infamous for its poor accident record), landed safely and even had the luxury of flying on the same aircraft back out of Nepal.
I probably saw this very aircraft take off (I live near the runway) on this exact flight. My deepest condolences to the families of those who perished and may their souls rest in peace.

Hmm yes

Damn WTF
Wait TFS community here!!!!
I was curious why all the confusion over which runway they were landing on ('20' or '02'). After reading the accident report, it is because while waiting for "02" to become visible they flew past the airport without realizing it. When they came back from the other direction, they were headed toward runway "20". The crew did not actually confuse "02" and "20". They just were completely lost and confused - zero situational awareness. Nevertheless, it struck me as interesting that a runway numbered "20" would always be runway "02" in the opposite direction (because of the standardized convention of numbering runways based on their compass heading with the least significant digit lopped off). This is not news to many people. But there is something unique about this particular runway configuration among all the possible pairs of runway numbers. The number "2", owing to the way it is painted on tarmac, looks the same right-side-up as it does upside-down. I looked at this airport on google maps, curious if there's any way a crew could mistake "02" and "20". What I decided was that, while highly unlikely, I suppose a pilot losing situational awareness could in a dyslexic moment think he was landing on "02" when he was actually approaching "20". Therefore, to minimize the chance of this happening, I would think an airport would NOT paint "02" on the tarmac, but rather just a "2" ... this would lessen any chance of a mixup. I know at the airport I usually fly out of, there is a single digit runway "4" ... it does NOT have a leading zero. But, as seen in google maps, the Katmandu runway 2 is painted "02". Might be wise to just paint a "2". Just something that occurred to me while reading about this accident. Thought I'd share.
It makes me wish they would read this.
At least a cadet has now watched the video and read this comment. The lesson shall never be forgotten.
(EDITED).
What are you saying?
If it's a single RWY, its named from either side and can only be active from one direction at every one time.
Its name out of the compass as you said but you normally minus what you are given from 360⁰ to find the opposite course.
So, if active runway is 200⁰ therefore 20, the opposite runway is (180⁰-200⁰)= 20 hence 02. The difference between 02 and 180 is like day and night whether IFR or VFR.
@@davidnyasani5070 200 minus 180 is 20 or just simply 2.. it is confusing as we have an airport we frequent that is the exact configuration, gotta be on your game

Very depressing to see the guy at 2:30 who's more interested in getting cellphone video than in running to help survivors. it's a sign of the times I suppose.
It's important to consider that people react differently in high-stress and unexpected situations. When a plane crash or any accident occurs, the immediate reaction of ground personnel or bystanders can vary for several reasons:
1. **Shock and Disbelief:** Witnessing a traumatic event like a plane crash can be so shocking and unexpected that it temporarily paralyzes some individuals. They may not immediately comprehend the situation or know how to react.
2. **Safety Concerns:** In some cases, people may be hesitant to approach a crash site due to concerns about their own safety. Depending on the circumstances, approaching a potentially dangerous accident scene without proper training or equipment can put individuals at risk.
3. **Helplessness:** Some individuals may feel helpless and uncertain about what they can do to assist. They might fear making the situation worse or causing harm unintentionally.
4. **Documenting for Evidence:** While it may seem insensitive to some, there's a practical aspect to recording the scene. Video footage and photos can serve as valuable evidence for investigations, helping to determine the cause of the crash and contributing to safety improvements in the future.
5. **Medical and Professional Training:** Some personnel at an airport may have specialized training and responsibilities. They may have specific roles that do not involve providing immediate medical assistance, such as directing emergency services to the scene or managing logistical aspects of the airport.
While it's understandable to expect immediate and coordinated responses in the aftermath of an accident, it's important to remember that not everyone is trained or equipped to provide immediate assistance, and emotions and instincts can vary widely in such situations. In these situations, it's typically the responsibility of trained emergency responders to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the accident.

"Deadliest Airplane crash" No, this is not the deadliest airplane crash, Tenerife is the deadliest.
And what about TWA 800???
@@irfanhub2045 The Boeing 747 one? Yeah, that one is also pretty bad.
@@irfanhub2045 Tenerife remains the deadliest crash. Flight 191 is the deadliest US crash.
@@johnny56700 no I think the 747 one is the Japanese Airlines one. It was pretty bad but four passengers in the back managed to survive, possibly even more of the rescue team came immediately after crash. Some people survived the 747 but died because of the 14 hour delay of the rescue team, which made the story ten times worse.
I'd say the two plane 2002 mid air collision crash was one of the deadliest. Not one from either planes survived and bodies were just scattered
@@gingerbreadmars Yes, also the TWA 800 right from New York was also a Boeing 747

I’ve flown into this airport many times this is Kathmandu Nepal, you can still see some of the debris from that crash til this day and yeah the terrain landing into Kathmandu is tricky to say the least, you need a skilled set of pilots to do that landing(I think pilots need a special training to land there etc etc)…nonetheless RIP to all who lost their lives.
Always pray your pilot didn’t get divorced that day!
Rest in peace to all 72 people who were killed in the recent tragic AirCrash of Yeti Airlines on 15th January 2023

@@isosta2373 ah yes . It’s like that carry a bomb in a plane and the chances of getting terrorist highjacked is too low. This is some statistics thing right ?
I departed Chicago O’Hare the day after that American 767 caught on fire and we taxied past the wreckage.
I'd punch the pilot square in the jaw..knock that shit OUT to avoid take off
A coincidence RUclips recommends this to me now?
I am about to fly this Thursday...
Wow you! More airport employees were taking videos than actually trying to go help help people get out of the plane! 😮
I just watched this on "Air Disasters" on the Smithsonian channel. The pilot was distraught and emotionally unstable. He was forced to retire from the Indian air force because of his depression. The cockpit recorder noted he was smoking cigarettes which is not allowed and he was crying about a colleague who complained about his abilities to teach other pilots. He had tendered his resignation prior to this flight. In my opinion he was a liability and he should have been grounded.
