so apparently the DM made these rules as a response to a horrible group of players that begged them to stay and DM for them, but then one of the players went and posted the rules to reddit to make the DM seem like an asshole. Hope the DM finds a group that will actually respect them and their rules in the future. Players need to learn some respect smh ://

I heard that the player who posted the rules had other posts bragging about how he and his group did things to infuriate the DM, so hearing that they had to beg the DM to keep running after a break, I'm not surprised. That being said, OP deleted his account after a lot of people called him out on how terrible he & the fellow players were.

I feel like the DM is still and A-hole. Because they should leave rather then try and force all of this. It's like they were too vain or stubborn to just let it go and decided to make it everyone else's problem by being hostile and vindictive.

  • @TheMediaPolitician

Apparently, the rules were made because the players (it was originally posted by one of the players) were really shitty, and when the DM tried leaving them, they begged him to play with them again since there arent many DMs in the area. Thus, he made all these rules. The player posted it, to make it seem like he's terrible, until everyone on reddit asked questions and realized they, the player and party, were awful. Granted, DM shouldn't be playing with them, especially if he is that frustrated. That's the context behind the 44 rules.

Okay, so apparently, the DM was pushed to this point. The original Reddit post was deleted because the one who posted it is a player, and once people started asking the OP questions, it became increasingly clear that the players were absolute assholes, so OP deleted the "44 Rules Post". Some users also did some digging and found that in OP's previous posts that he was bragging about making the DM's life hell, sickening. Not only that, but the DM apparently left after he got fed up with the group, only for them to bug him to come back since none of them seemingly know how to DM for themselves.
Long story short, he came back and gave them these rules as his "terms and conditions," in a sense. It's possible that OP twisted his words to make them sound more unfair and ridiculous than they could have been. I wouldn't dismiss the possibility.

    • @Ari33sa
      @Ari33sa Месяц назад

@@munamaepahhadd There are a lot of hints in these rules which makes the picture quite sad. Especially if you combine rules with each other. Or in combination with OP's post history showing how he had bragged about destroying the DM in the past, it makes it even worse. Because the DM mentions Reddit twice. It's the only social media platform he actually mentions, making it more than clear, that he is fed up with specifically Reddit ruling being brought to him to discredit his own ruling. So not only was OP talking badly about his DM, critizising him and looking for different ruling behind REddit, and then bragging about how he made their life hell, but he also brought these reddit interactions back to the DM. Like I think it's quite telling, that there are two rules that essentially say "I don't care what Reddit thinks" and then the rules are, of all places, published on Reddit by a person who has a history of talking bad about his DM on reddit. This player has been cyberbullying their DM on reddit, and then, rather than just doing it anonymously, told the DM about it, whenever Reddit agreed with him regarding the DM making a mistake.
As for rules that you can combine to come up with a sad picture: There's the rule with timing turns. A rule, that I think actually makes sense, though 1 minute is too harsh. But it makes especially sense, if you combine it with the information we gleam from other rules: his party members are constantly late, leave the table every ten minutes to smoke, are sometimes drunk during the game, eat and drink whenever they want, making a mess on the table, and talk about random other stuff during the game. Additionally, they are badly prepared, don't bring their own dice or character sheets, don't provide spell lists, and whatever. And also they don't seem to pay all that much attention if they repeatedly miss cues for side quests. And then additionally they seem to argue quite a bit over rules. All of these things would make the game unbearably long. Another example is the many "in game punishments" he gives for out of game behavior. Again, that's generally bad. Everyone I see react to these rules are just like "no you should give a warning, talk to them, etc.". But if you combine it with the information that they mock him like "This isn't fun, playing DnD is serious business" and other information, it gives the impression they clearly don't respect him, and prior instances of him trying to call his group to order (to come on time, sit down, do their turn, stop doing other shit) has in the past let to him being ridiculed for taking the game too seriously.

Suddenly it's not "How insane does a DM have to be for that?" and instead "Oh, there's a horror story behind that rule, isn't there?" I wouldn't be surprised if some of the rules were purposefully written so the group let the DM go without complaints.

    • @christineg8151
      @christineg8151 2 месяца назад +25

Yeah, I heard some of these and went "I KNOW the sort of player that prompted this rule..." I can definitely see why some of these could be in place. Thankfully my home group isn't like that, but I've played enough con games to recognize the type. Some of it certainly appears over the top, but I have no idea how long they were DMing for this toxic group before deciding to put the rules in place. If I had to deal with the same shit over and over, I would probably be an asshole too.
It's also worth mentioning, though the rules as written are tough, you can always be easier on people, but it's really hard to establish boundaries that are firmer than the ones laid out in writing. If you start out saying everyone needs to be ready to play in 45 minutes, but it's ALWAYS 45 minutes before you can start, it's a lot harder to drop back to saying people need to be ready within a half hour. If you say half an hour and occasionally let people chat for 40 minutes, that's a lot easier for people to swallow.

What I got from this was this was a DM on edge from a group of players who never respected their time, wandered outside to get high, complained about everything and how this wasnt like Critical Role and the table was just toxic. Do some of these rules on the surface seem a little control freaky? Most definitely. But I'd be on edge if I had a band of high, drunk murder hobos wandering around the world and complaining that every second isnt some epic dungeon without phat lewtz every second. And then when they do get an epic dungeon experience, they fake rolls, whip owls and sending stones out of their rear ends, metagame to high hell, and just are generally toxic. Now thats not to say that the way this DM expressed their frustration was at all constructive. This table should have broken at their hiatus. They never should have returned. Chalk the table up to a bad experience and move on.

I run a homebrew campaign myself, and I felt like sharing a few of the things we do at the table.
    1. Classes don't exists. You can learn any ability, but each one you learn will take from some of your stats. AS an example, if you want to learn fireball, it can cost 2 strength points, creating the feel of min-maxing a character.
    2. I will always keep you engaged. A guy decided to waste 3 in-game hours while some others were in combat. at the end of these 3 hours, he screaming at the volume of a rock concert, due to a nat 20. I then spent the time he technically wasted, letting him detail a trip he took to reach the capital where the fight was happening. He reached the capital within 3 hours, before his scream did. Now he canonically has the ability to powerwalk faster than sound itself if he's emotionally disturbed.
    3. We can reach a middleground. I won't bend over backwards over you, but you shouldn't have to either. Rules are bendable until everyone is satisfied.
    4. This is where it gets wierd - Every NPC has relationship stats. Basically, how they'd act if they get seduced by a player. The higher their hidden "Simp" stat, the more they'd do for you. The higher their Insecurity, the more clingy they'd be.
    5. You can go ANYWHERE. ANYWHERE. AND NOONE HAS EXPLORED THE REMAINING 85% OF MY MAP. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

These aren't rules, this is a fed up DM's very long way of saying "No".
You can tell by the aggression and exact wording used that this was a constant problem and the DM had enough.
So go ahead, agree to the rules. Follow them for a week, or two, maybe a month. But eventually, everyone will forget, continue to be assholes, and get kicked from the group until nobody is left. That was the whole point of the list, and the fact that one player tried to turn it into a smear campaign against the DM proves that the DM is not at fault here.

I don't mind the one skill check rule on things where you genuinely cannot redo it, like a social interaction or a strength/dex check to see if you fall over from an impact, etc, but if it applies for things like lockpicking, which can be tried multiple times by the same person so long as they have more sets of thieves tools, unless there is some sort of trap or alarm system, or in the scenario that they must investigate a room or read a text, I think it's quite silly. But also, a good DM will not hide VITAL plot material behind a skill check anyways.

My first group had a bunch of teens (13-18 group) and I will say that kids who aren't really invested are extremely annoying to play with (every part of me wanted to yell at our rogue for refusing to use his class abilities ever and a year or so in I was super tempted to just give him a monk so he could at least be more effective with his biting things and not wearing armour strategy) and then when I actually had a character with any level of optimisation or just built properly in general I would get comments from party members like "Oh Ev's just going to kill it before we get to do anything, she's so overpowered" (granted in a party of highly suboptimal characters my Gloomstalker/rogue was by far the most effective so it was a somewhat accurate statement, but honestly the fact that I've rolled more sneak attacks dice with her 1 rogue level compared to most of the other level 5/6 rogues probably says enough about my strategic ability and if not my Gloomstalker getting criticised it was one of my warlocks with agonising blast or my bard's deception or something)

The first DnD group I joined I did as a 13 year and they were my dads all adult group, they had a rule that if you took to long to take your turn it was skipped, what was to long? well if you said um at any point my dad skipped you.
You compared this to 'you were late so you have to skip your first 5 turns' I was late once and they decided to "stay in character for you" and my character had apparently run as far away from the combat as possible so when I got control I had to spend just as many turns coming back, because it made sense to him that my character would do that...

Here are my 10 main rules for my campaigns and sessions as a DM of 7 years.
    1. Have a backup character at the ready because if your character died I still want you to play because it sucks being left out of a campaign when you lose your death saving throws.
    2. Players have the option to bring food or drinks (non alcoholic beverages only). The more food or drinks they bring the more advantages they get in the session (this stacks up to three rolls.) If you bring alcoholic drinks, you automatically get a disadvantage roll that stacks up to three rolls depending on the drink.
    3. I have to approve of your characters before the game begins because stupid characters are funny, but some players get WAY too into it and it can put a damper on the campaign.
    4. If you make a decision that upsets the party (both in and out of the campaign) you will sit out on the next session to reflect on your actions.
    5. Following by the previous rule, if you have to sit out there times by force you’re uninvited from attending future sessions. The campaigns and the people I play with must have a healthy and engaging environment, and toxicity isn’t allowed.
    6. Any racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or any discrimination of any kind is not allowed in my session, and thus gets you automatically banned from any future sessions and campaigns I host.
    7. If you miss out on a session it’s the players responsibility to recap on events that happened. I will fill you in on certain parts, but not the entire session due to lore drops and I think it’s funny.
    8. It’s okay to take your time to make decisions on certain actions, but understand that people can get impatient when you take to long.
    9. Before we start the session we have a 15 minute time window where we discuss and talk about daily life and what happened between sessions.
    10. Have fun, and if you’re not having fun let me know and I’ll resolve the issue to make the campaign fun.

Because i swear to god their playing in a prison with inmates

Mt favourite thing one of my DM's has done, is that when we either kill or insult a npc then it affects the party later in the story.
For example: let's say we killed a barkeeper. Later we find out that he was actually the person who had the key to the chest we are trying to unlock. We now need to find another way to spread kindness to find the key.
Or if we insult someone we later find out that they are the boat captain to the shop we need to get on to get to our next stop. Let's say we had to bribe him to let us on by giving him the entire party's coin collection.
    Stuff like that

I ran with a DM that was like this... but for no reason. I ended up getting banned from his discord server because I fell asleep during an online game after taking new medication. Had never fallen asleep before, it was late as hell, and the sessions had begun taking like 7 hours. I went to apologize and explain myself and he had already banned me and blocked me. I later found an awesome new group only to find out he is a terror as a DM and as a player. So if u see WhoLee DM on roll 20 just... don't. Not worth him taking 20 minutes to explain to you why youre a terrible player because your turn takes more than 30 seconds. He also would change rules and instead of calling it homebrew, would just gaslight you and say they were the actual rules and call you a rules lawyer if you got confused and asked why that wasn't the way you knew the rule to be. absolutely crazy

For number 1, I think it could be twisted to encourage players to prepare before their turn. If you made it, if you finish deciding your action in under 1 minute, you get a plus 1 to attack or maybe damage.

  • @awolfnamedcookie3919

My current DM doesn't have specifically defined rules but rather ones we find out by playing, so far there are:
    1. stat bonuses will not count for irrelevant things (ex: I can add my bonus to do important intimidations like to stop someone from doing something bad for everyone involved but not to just randomly make someone intimidated)
    2. While relationships between player and NPC are possible, the DM can use this to randomly have you separated from your party for a bit or have them be present randomly to split your priorities (can also have a chance that the player has a sleepless night meaning they don't heal, we don't take damage often though)
    3. If you do not play for a session or are gone for a long time, the session continues as long as 2 of the 3 players are present
    4. In addition to 3, if you do not participate in something that leveled someone or the other players up, you do not level up
    5. Areas will be level-locked and you are mostly on your own to find ways to level up with only a little guidance but many subtle hints
    6. DM can veto actions (mostly cause I and another player's characters are more violently inclined than normal due to lore reasons so we often test our luck against NPCs that mean no physical harm)
    7. Skill checks brought on by the DM will often be based on irl skills rather than stats (ex: playing against a bot in smash bros to win gold in an in-game tournament and staring contests with the DM to see if you sneak an item past security)
The only rule that was put in place was the character we liked the most out of the purposefully hateable characters would die the first in-game night, after that most of those characters did become more likable though.

These rules are nuts. (Some of them.) Some rules feel like they don’t need to be stated, but there are crazy people out there. My mother was a dungeon master/vampire the masquerade GM for decades. People loved her stories and would bring friends to join the campaigns. One of our extended relatives heard and joined mid campaign. Not even a full session in, he kept trying to derail the campaign, solely so he could act out hurting the bartender’s daughter. Threaten to kill, r word a 12 yr old character. Mind you this was a campaign with a literal ten year old playing a character. My mother kept telling him no. Finally after redirects and direct no’s didn’t work, and another attempt of him trying to “Accidently” hurt the character, she let him roll an intimidation roll. She pretended to roll for the bartender, and one shot his character as he perceived the player’s character as a threat to his daughter. It became a canon part of the story that the bartender was a retired adventurer. Sometimes you don’t know how messed up someone is until they “pretend to enjoy something in the game”. When he complained that it was just fantasy and we should lighten up, she replied that that would never be a fantasy in her house. We never spoke to him again after that. There are just some lines you don’t cross.

The side-quests thing is hard because while much of this list feels dickish, I FEEL that rule so hard sometimes. I had a pretty open world where every town was going to have quests and important NPCs with private lives and drama etc etc and I would go over the notes for their most recent town arrival before each session to be ready- so i was designing a new settlement and quests Every Week to account for them traveling to a new location.
and without fail they would go into town, stay at an inn, ignore the drama I am putting in front of them, and then leave. So I would be like well shit what do i do now? So i started preparing a couple towns in advance and it would still happen and they got angry at me for not having anything for them to do. All i could tell them was I have put 10-20 npcs in a town that have content and I tried very hard to make them appealing to you guys in particular and you aren't staying to do anything with them, and when an Event occurs you arent hanging out to explore it further, you are jsut leaving after the first encounter or in the middle of it.
They told me to make them stay then, so next time when I tried to be like No guys, the content is Here, i was accused of railroading them. So lmao it's rough.
In a similar vein, i played in a game where a DM was upset we werent doing sidequests, but their plot was made out to not only be about survival but also Time Sensitive. So we are freezing to death in a magical winter that we cannot fight against because there is no wood no food, and no friendly npcs to be seen (every npc we had encountered trying to get help was hostile and had no useful supplies anyways) so we were jsut powering through because we were suffering anyways. The DM said that all the content was elsewhere- then why make it a time sensitive thing? We are going to freeze to death, our loved ones are going to freeze to death- No i am not going to go off the beaten path when every step off had resulted in near death with no way to recover those spent resources; we couldnt get a full rest without proper shelter and you guessed it, we didnt have proper shelter because there were no supplies to be found.

    My opinions on these rules:
1: I think that timed turns is fine, you just shouldnt punish them too much, and if they need something explained or need to look up a spell, that should be fine.
    2: erm, jerkface, be nicer
3: little harsh, but also you shouldnt change your rolls to make it more frustrating for players in the first place. You're all there to have fun, its not a competition
4: erm, stinky head, be nicer
5: Shouldnt fail, but if they do act it out they should get like a plus 2 bonus or something. Positive reinforcement works best :3
    6: meany face, be nicer
    7: dum
    8: mean, but yeah asbolutely
    9: poopoo head, be nicer
    10: mmm.... i guess?
    11: fair enough? still mean
    12: huh
    13: stupid
    14: also complete garbage
    15: fair
    16: also fair
    17: absolute garbage
18: almost agree (only for some skill checks)
    19: dumb punishment
    20: pretty stupid
21: almost agree, a little harsh, but mostly agree
    22: a little unfair
    23: generally agree, world specific
    24: ????? dumb
    25: and?
    26: huh
    27: wtf
    28: agree with danny here
29: ok so this guy just hates fun
30: to a degree, pretty fair
    31: agreed
32: ????? you have authority in game not irl, stfu
33: mmmm... agreed? to a degree
34: thats weird? dunno why tho
    35: yeah i kinda understand
    36: yeah?
37: wtf is this guys insane
    38: stupidly toxic
    39: too harsh
    40: fair enough?
    41: agreed with danny
    42: a little stupid
43: i missed one but this guy is actually goofy

I adore pretty much every DM I play ttrpgs with (cause I play D&D, the Marvel ttrpg, Pathfinder 2e here soon, Kids on Bikes, etc). But pretty much all of us are really good friends who hang out and play games or just chat outside of games too.
Only bad experiences I've had has been one player consistently being awful to a lot of the others in the game, rolling things and then telling the DM they were doing a thing (often things that were to the detriment of the party, like almost offing our wizard in one game), harassing people outside of games, and at times even threatening people in private messages.
They were all around not great. It got to a point where I had to talk to the GMs of the games we were in and let the GMs know that if that player stuck around in games then they were probably gonna lose at least 2 players (my partner and I who were both being harassed and threatened by this person). Every GM kicked that person cause they were noticing a lot of the problematic behavior as well. I do hope that person gets the help they clearly need(ed?) and that they improve as a person. I just couldn't deal with it anymore.

I think banning spells can be fine in some situations, like if you're playing a survivalist game, the spell goodberry can kind of take away from the tension of needing to gather enough food bc then there's someone who can supply a healing food once every day. However, this DM sounds like he wants to ban Guidance bc it makes his players feel less stressed about his stupid saving throws rule lmfao

The whole point of D&D is to have fun with your friends. If as the DM they decide "They are not your friend" than they need to stop playing D&D. Full stop. How your friends have fun can be different from group to group but the point is ALWAYS to have fun.

If you're my friend and you're the DM, then you'll give me a Holy Avenger at level one with no drawbacks, right? If you're my friend and you're the DM, then you'll fudge the dice to say you didn't critically hit my character, right? If you're my friend and you're the DM, then you'll believe me when I said I've just rolled my fifth natural 20 of the night, even though you only saw the die once, right?
That's the sort of "Aren't you my friend?" that was going on at that table. Don't believe me? Check the other rules; this is a result of petty player manipulations.
