I’m happy to see the giant smile on your face. I can totally relate. Yesterday I started up my 997 and my wife came out of the house because of the burbling. She asked me if the car was ok. My son was standing behind her laughing because he understands. I gave her a couple good revs then went for a good rip. Same smile on my face as yours almost a year after my install. The start up gets me every time. Congrats.
Sounds great. One bit of advice would be not to ever use wd40 for penetrating oil. Use PB blaster. PB blaster has acetone like ingredients in it so don't get it on paint, but as opposed to wd40 it actually works. Also never just try to go right at a rusty bolt and try to loosen it right off. You have to sneak up on it. 1. use pb blaster for at least 1 day if you have the time. 2. make sure you have the right size socket. 3. try to tighten the nut or bolt first just to break the corrosion. 4. tap on it with a hammer to break the corrosion. 5. have enough torque or leverage with a breaker bar. 6. have a back up plan if you do have an strip out or galling of threads issues. doing these tips and with experience you can really minimize your issues. we all had to start somewhere , but I just tried to learn from other peoples mistakes so I wouldn't cause myself as much pain. Even so you will run into problems. When you overcome those problems the satisfaction can be immense.
Thanksomuch for putting the sound comparison clips..back-to-back...to-back...to-back...to-back...to-back so we dont have to keep rewinding back 2 seconds to hear the differences. Genius!!!

Great modification video. The sound was well captured. You never stated real hard cost with shop help. Your attitude is great and I love these cars and this brand.
I’m a fan of your channel and car. The Fister exhaust sounds fantastic! As a fellow owner of a Porsche C2S, I’ve considered a Fister exhaust for over a year, but went with Fabspeed Maxflo for a few reasons other than perfect sound. Big mistake after a few months of ownership as they just generate a smooth, low tone and the Porsche exhaust snarl and burble are lost. Just ordered Fisters. Looking at your install, the bolts holding the mufflers to the muffler bracket appear to be upside down and probably will never be a problem. The factory installation has the bolts inserted from the top of the muffler/bracket so in the event the nut vibrates off the bolt, the bolt will not fall out leading to a bigger problem. Perhaps my aging eyes are deceiving me. In any case, the your car’s sound is intoxicating! Cheers!
appreciate the cabin comparison as well. most don't do it that and it's appreciated. one of my concerns is the noise inside the cabin because i don't want my wife to balk when i want to take a weekend trip to the coast or something. of course, i have a cabriolet and the top's usually down so it will be a wee bit louder. sounds great. brilliantly done comparison. congrats
They were from Renndecals.com but I believe they just got shut down by a Porsche lawyer. 😩 I had them installed by a body shop for a hundred bucks or so. Very easy to do.
Congrats on the Fisters! The sound is just enough isn’t it? For anyone else considering this, easiest thing to do is to expect to replace all fasteners. Either over- torque till they snap off or use a cutting wheel. It’s not worth the time to loosen cheap rusty fasteners which should be replaced anyway and less expensive than shop rates. But I can understand your apprehension after the airbag incident. Keep being fearless!
Well another successful mod and no knives were used. Congrats James! sound just right, a wonderful addition, they will hear you coming to cars and coffee. A much deeper, throatier sound, you will be going through those gears at red line....
AJ is AJ Approved. I feel you on rusted under body bits. Purchased my car in the northeast and every job that needs to be completed under body ends up being an argument with Los Angeles mechanics as they dont know how to deal with rust. Basically I have to explain that you either drench and leave it in wd40 or drill them/weld them out. You car does sound loads better it's a much smoother deeper sound.
Thanks AJ! 🤩🙌 The previous owner lived in Chicago and based on the condition of the underside, as well as the headlight lenses I replaced, I think it spent every winter outside. I’m grateful the body work and the interior is in immaculate condition. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
Dang! I watch your videos and then immediately search for an inexpensive Porsche. Arrrgggghhh. Not enough free cash flow. Ooooohhhh the pain. 😂. OTOH your vids are getting better. And I would do this mod before anything else. Great sound. My son did a turbo back (?) on his WRX and the cabin noise is just too much. The fister seems perfect. Well done.
Thanks, great video and channel. I'm getting ready to order the Fister for my '03 996 C2 Narrow Body. Getting excited for Spring and Summer with a growl.
When you said: "-I know when to stop", before you said anything else I thought: "-Well, not when you stabbed your air-bag!" :D But seriously James, Darin Fister should give you the Exhaust for free. I want one now and I don't even have a car!! Great review. The sound is awesome!
Hahahaha. As soon as I started saying that line, the airbag immediately came to mind. 😆😆😆😆😆 Thanks for the kind comments!! If you see my Fister post on Instagram, @auto.amateur ... feel free to tag Darin and let him know you like the exhaust! Cheers!
Thanks for the video....my Fister Exhaust should arrive any day now. I'm also waiting for the Numeric shifter, GT3 Alcatera steering wheel, Alcatera shift knob/boot, and all new speaker upgrade to work with original Bose stereo system.

I would say this is truly THE best mod one could do on the 997. Makes a real impact without being obnoxious. Is your 997 now your daily driver (outside of winter)?
I agree! No, I drive the Cayenne mostly for errands and general running around. The 997 comes out a few evenings each week and mostly over the week for a good rag around. 🔥🔥🔥
Well done for getting the Fister, certainly improves the noise and no doubt will make you drive like an eighteen year old...😂 car looks complete now, will be interesting to see if there are any more mods? Time to enjoy the driving but think you will miss finding things to do to the car and having these projects....
Thanks Matt! Yeah, I have all the major stuff done now. I have a few smaller projects on my list... GT3 short shift kit, a few replacement interior trim pieces, possibly either removing or putting on some new decals. I’m also considering doing a new paint job, top to bottom. I don’t know, maybe it’s time to switch and find a new 911 to work on. We’ll see! I’m definitely going to enjoy the car more now though for the next year or more.
@@AutoAmateur - I got a hold of Fabspeed and they give me a quote for about 5K + for all the new exhaust system -- OI think a little too much - dont you think???

Big improvement! I loved how the camera shook when you started the car - kind of let’s you know what’s coming. You have absolutely been my mentor for when I get a 997. Also, is that a new Mercedes AMG in the stable? New ride for mum?
Don’t go putting ideas into my wife’s head Jonathan! 😆 No, the AMG was one of the cars at EuroCharged actually. Thanks for the kind words too! Appreciate it!! Knowing some of my videos help and inspire others with the same interests is so cool, thank you!
Thanks! Not really. I had a private offer before Christmas which was quite above the middle range market price / Kelly Blue Book. I was surprised at the offer a Porsche dealer offered me too. I did worry about resale at the beginning, but less now.
I hear more of t motor functions on t stock exhaust than with t modified exhaust. Don't get me wrong it does sound great with your exhaust mods. But maybe t small bypass pipe might be to big I have heard that 1.5 inch is t best valance for right engine sound.but heck if u find this to be to your taste. power to u my friend . porches are just fun to drive.
At a minimum I would suggest 12 to 18 inches using Jack Stands, or something similar like Quick Jacks. Really just enough room to get a standard wrench under the car to get to the bolts. Removing the rear bumper is a must, but it can also help to remove the rear wheels for some extra access, but not mandatory. Hope this helps!
It’s worth 50 bhp in sounds alone. Your reactions say it all. I’d be interested at some point to hear from you how it works at constant motorway speeds and if there’s any resonance then but so far for me that’d mean a new clutch in a month from just doing start/stop/start to hear it.
Hahaha. I know what you mean. I’ve been stopping and starting a lot in the past 24 hours to listen to it growl. 😆 I did a 30 mile round trip on the motorway last night and I didn’t notice anything odd or different inside the cabin besides when I hit the gas and you hear the Fister growl in all its glory. I’ll hold my judgment though for another few weeks until I drive 1200 miles to North Carolina. 😆👍
@@AutoAmateur ah I see, makes sense. Just bought a spanking 997.1, all nasties have been sorted and it’s got a switchable aftermarket exhaust... it screams past 5k, bonkers loud. I’ll let you know what it is when I pick it up. Next job, to speak to Porsche about fitting the upgraded pcm... I make Clarkson look like a diy professional so I wouldn’t risk being let loose on it...
Drilling corroded fasteners is not fun... Don't ask me how I know 😭. What I learned though is to tighten the bolts rather than loosening them. This will snap the fastener which hopefully allows you to remove it by hitting it with a big hammer
Aha! Great idea! I didn’t think of that. I watched your video to prep a ton of times though, so thanks for that! Big fan of your channel and your content. Cheers!
Sure, we’ll as best I can. It’s a factory Porsche car seat that I picked up on eBay. I’m afraid I don’t know the model but it fits the rear seats perfectly and is very good.
Great video and great channel, sounds amazing, I started my channel with some videos of my Porsche as well, going for new valved exhaust with sport headers soon 😋😋
Very cool!! On both counts! I’ll have to check out your vids. I’m always on the hunt for Porsche content to watch in Ubers, at airports, on runways... 🥳🥳🥳
Question about your Sony media center replacement for your PCM unit - what functionality did you lose? With the Chrono Package you can adjust some vehicle settings (auto door lock, daylight running lights etc) via the PCM. I assume the Sony doesn't support this functionality, so do you miss this or is there another way to set these things? Also, did you lose steering wheel button functionality? I'm asking because I'm thinking of installing the Sony on my 997. Love your vids! Thanks!
The short answer is yes. I lost my steering wheel’s multifunction controls when I put my Sony in as well as the sports chrono PCM controls. You can control those settings manually in the instrument cluster though, I think. Now I replaced my wheel though I’ve also lost my MF buttons, not that it matters any more. I just love how easy the Sony system is to use, the Apple Car Play is hands down worth every dollar for the upgrade. So so much better than the PCM.
Hi all, can you maybe recommend us any exhaust on 996 with valves? You know sometimes you want be loud driver and sometimes I dont :-) and also want to be silent when coming home.. I appreciate every advise
Not at all. This is a very modest mod, as far as exhausts go. I couldn’t recommend it more enthusiastically, even for a cabrio with the top down. It was the best $500 I ever spent on my 997.
@@AutoAmateur thanks for responding. I notice most of info and videos on line are for 997 Fister and not early 996s and especially convertibles. Apparently per Darren his Fister is louder on early 996 3.4s versus 997s. Hence my original question ....its too bad I cant find any specific info for early 996 3.4s with Fister especially for noise levels when top down all the time.
I would be surprised if they’re very different. The 997.1 which I had is essentially just a 996 with a bigger facelift inside and out than the 996.1 to 996.2. It’s the 997.2 that really jumped into a new generation of 911.
Oh man, that's like asking which supermodel you prefer. They're both gorgeous, maybe in different ways. For my 997 I can't imagine a better sound than the Fisters I had. For my 991, I now can't imagine a better sound for it than my Soul PP!
@@rockystallone3925 For the 997, the Fister solution gives you a little extra volume but more of a rasp and growl. It's the authentic flat-6 Porsche engine sound dialed up to an 11 or 12 basically. For the Soul solution, the experience is more like a race car. It's louder, you get cracks and pops as you go from gear to gear. So if you want a stronger sounding classic Porsche sound, go Fister. If you want a more exciting race car feel, go soul.
These kind of jobs vary from place to place and from car to car. Generally you’re looking at paying any shop by the hour. So it depends on their hourly rate. This job should take just 1-2 hours but when all the bolts are as rusted as mine, you’re looking at more like 3 to 4 hours.
Oh! Haha. It’s a very British expression. Giving something some “shovel” means to work harder, or push harder. In the case, the push the pedal and give it gas. 😆
Sounds good! I did something a little different to mine then all the exhaust mods you mentioned. Hope you check my videos out with my stock muffler mod.
I dropped it off and then went out of town on business for 2 days. But the bolts were so rusted, it took a little extra time to get them all off. Especially the long vertical bolt along the profile of the muffler.

Thanks!
Sounds awesome. Just awesome
Haha. Thanks Rick!!! 👍
I see you fitted a fister - then a soul performance ... were these both on the 997 ?
Fister on my 997. Soul PP on my 991.
Do you feel the fister exhaust helped, hurt, or neutral on the resale value of your 997?
I think it only helped. For those who don't know any better, you hear an amazing engine note. For those who do, they see the value. Win win.
I recently bought a 2014 Aston Martin vantage V8 and I can't believe that you're 997.1 sounds better. ;( Ps. nice video !
Oh no!! Haha. Well, you get to be James Bond though, so there’s that. 😉🙌
;)True True
Drilling corroded fasteners is not fun... Don't ask me how I know 😭. What I learned though is to tighten the bolts rather than loosening them. This will snap the fastener which hopefully allows you to remove it by hitting it with a big hammer
Aha! Great idea! I didn’t think of that. I watched your video to prep a ton of times though, so thanks for that! Big fan of your channel and your content. Cheers!
Very off topic.......but can you tell me which specific car seat you have installed in the rear?
Sure, we’ll as best I can. It’s a factory Porsche car seat that I picked up on eBay. I’m afraid I don’t know the model but it fits the rear seats perfectly and is very good.
Is it wrong to hit like when you only heard the exhaust in the first 10 seconds.😜
Hahahah. Absolutely not! 😆🥳🥳🥳🙌
I will get mine - done soon -- i will take a longer video Carter -- I'm excited to do it myself :)
Anyone have the IPE exhaust? I am trying to decide whether IPE, Soul, or Fister. Leaning toward IPE.
All things being equal, how would you compare just the sound of the fister mod vs soul performance?
Actually sounds fantastic 👍
Thanks Phil! 🤩🙌
It sounds fantastic 👍
Thanks! 🤩🙌
Thanks!
Thanks so much! Appreciate your kind words!
Thanks for the quick reply! Pulled the trigger on the Sony, looking forward to the upgrade!
Nice! Enjoy!
Hi all, can you maybe recommend us any exhaust on 996 with valves? You know sometimes you want be loud driver and sometimes I dont :-) and also want to be silent when coming home..
I appreciate every advise
Soul Performance Products! Check out their valved exhaust options. I’ve had one and it was the best thing I did to my 911.
@@AutoAmateur Thanks I will check
Sounds great!!!
Thanks so much!
Yo homeboy! I’m here in minniapps! I assume you’re in tonka. I’m in lynhurst. 🤘🏻
No way! Always good to meet another local Porsche nut!
Did you have a cold air intake or resonator bypass?
Curious would this be too loud or perhaps annoying at times in a convertible with top down all the time?
Thanks ....keep doing your "thang" 🤓
So which mufflers did you like more? Soul or Fister?
Oh man, that's like asking which supermodel you prefer. They're both gorgeous, maybe in different ways. For my 997 I can't imagine a better sound than the Fisters I had. For my 991, I now can't imagine a better sound for it than my Soul PP!
@@AutoAmateur so for the 997 what is better sound? Fister or Soul? There is a big price difference
Is that a weighted shifter?
No, just a standard shifter.
What did it cost for the installation?
These kind of jobs vary from place to place and from car to car. Generally you’re looking at paying any shop by the hour. So it depends on their hourly rate. This job should take just 1-2 hours but when all the bolts are as rusted as mine, you’re looking at more like 3 to 4 hours.
Hay just my ocd look at your driver tail pipe looks a little higher then passenger. Or could be camera
You’re right, a few people have noted that. I managed to correct it last night. The driver side exhaust tip’s bolt just needed tightening a little.
is that give it a little "shuvvle"?
Oh! Haha. It’s a very British expression. Giving something some “shovel” means to work harder, or push harder. In the case, the push the pedal and give it gas. 😆
Sounds good! I did something a little different to mine then all the exhaust mods you mentioned. Hope you check my videos out with my stock muffler mod.
Will do! Thanks!!
11:03 comparo
Definitely the exhaust bolts were british XD
How do you like the sound of the Fister??
@@AutoAmateur awesome, it's deep without being too loud ;)
What’s a difference
I know right?! I want them on my 991 now... 🤩🤩🤩🤩
love your vids but dear GOD that song is so annoying!
Ha! Which one? The one over the opening credits or elsewhere in the video?? 😬
@@AutoAmateur the one in the video. sounds like a chipmunk who is stuck singing one tune for 10 minutes lol
Oh no!!! Haha. 😆
Stop decorating your beatyfull 911 like a christmas-tree 🥺
Ha! 🤣👍
“They had the car for a couple of days”. Why? This is a simple job 1hr tops
I dropped it off and then went out of town on business for 2 days. But the bolts were so rusted, it took a little extra time to get them all off. Especially the long vertical bolt along the profile of the muffler.
