  • The Stop the Violence Movement was formed by rapper KRS-One.
During a Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy concert, a young fan was killed in a fight; galvanized into action, KRS-One founded the Stop the Violence Movement. Comprised of some of the biggest stars in contemporary East Coast hip-hop, the movement released a single ('Self Destruction') in 1989 with all proceeds going to the National Urban League.

But even when it seems like we don't care what's happening to each other, I believe there are many of us who do care. For those of us who do, we are up against an evil that our people don't understand. Music was our therapy, it was a bridge builder in my generation. I'm sad to see how they use the music industry and money to dirty, dilute and dumb down the message. They have literally changed the frequency and vibration of music to f us up.
Hang in there, we have to continue to fight against it and the 1st step is in bring kind and letting each other Know we care. Stay up my brother....we are a brave and resilient people. The love we have runs deeply....that's why you're here listening... carrying the positivity forward.

I'm 51 now. Me and a bunch of my friends performed this song during our senior showcase talent show. I was Miss Melodie. Such great memories and a very profound song that is still so relevant today many many years later.

It is most definitely gone forever. We will never experience this level of rap music again. These 2019 guys has really taken Rap to another level and i my mean no disrespect to them but I'm sadden by it.

this kind of hip hop is long gone, but there are plenty of extremely talented rappers around today. People seem to look back on oldschool stuff because they can't accept that a lot of today's artists bump just as hard

TRUE STORY. I was 12 when this came out. I'm from southwest Philly (hood) but by 12 we moved to Wnyyefield which is a suburb of west Philly & where Will Smith is from....its NOT good @ all, no matter what the shows intro song says...anyway, 2 other rappers were from there , Steady B & Cool C. They killed a cop & are doing life now...anyway, 1 day I'm on my friend Corey's porch next to where Steady B lived , & SB & another producer were on their porch talking about this song & video that's coming & he wanted SB on it but they were only using NYC rappers. The producer was like "its bullshit anyway, its just a chance for the IT rappers to all put their face out there more. Some of the artist don't even give a fuck about the message".....now I'm 12 , ear hustling & hearing this! @ that moment I promised to go w my OWN heart & NOT what another person says that they stand for.....bcuz they might be full of shit.
