Lyrics:
I sit alone in my four-cornered room staring at candles
Oh that sh*it is on?
Let me drop some sh*it like this here, real smooth
At night I can't sleep, I toss and turn
Candlesticks in the dark, visions of bodies being burned
Four walls just staring at a n*gga
I'm paranoid, sleeping with my finger on the trigger
My mother's always stressin' I ain't living right
But I ain't goin' out without a fight
See, every time my eyes close
I start sweating and blood starts coming out my nose
It's somebody watching the Ak'
But I don't know who it is so I'm watching my back
I can see him when I'm deep in the covers
When I awake I don't see the motherf*cker
He owns a black hat like I own
A black suit and a cane like my own
Some might say take a chill, B
But f*ck that sh*it, there's a n*gga trying to kill me
I'm popping in the clip when the wind blows
Every twenty seconds got me peeping out my window
Investigating the joint for traps
Checking my telephone for taps
I'm staring at the woman on the corner
It's f*cked up when your mind's playing tricks on ya
I make big money
I drive big cars
Everybody know me
It's like I'm a movie star
But late at night something ain't right
I feel I'm being tailed by the same sucker's headlights
Is it that fool that I ran off the block
Or is it that n*gga last week that I shot
Or is it the one I beat for five thousand dollars
Thought he had caine but it was Gold Medal flour
Reached under my seat, grabbed my popper for the suckers
Ain't no use to me lying
I was scareder than a motherf*cker
Hooked a left into Popeye's and bailed out quick
If it's going down let's get this sh*it over with
Here they come just like I figured
I got my hand on the motherf*cking trigger
What I saw'll make your ass start giggling
Three blind, crippled and crazy senior citizens
I live by the sword
I take my boys everywhere I go because I'm paranoid
I keep looking over my shoulder and peeping around corners
My mind is playing tricks on me
Day by day it's more impossible to cope
I feel like I'm the one that's doing dope
Can't keep a steady hand because I'm nervous
Every Sunday morning I'm in service
Praying for forgiveness
And trying to find an exit out the business
I know the Lord is lookin' at me
But yet and still it's hard for me to feel happy
I often drift when I drive
Having fatal thoughts of suicide
Bang and get it over with
And then I'm worry-free, but that's bullsh*it
I got a little boy to look after
And if I died then my child would be a bastard
I had a woman down with me
But to me it seemed like she was down to get me
She helped me out in this sh*it
But to me she was just another b*tch
Now she's back with her mother
Now I'm realizing that I love her
Now I'm feeling lonely
My mind is playing tricks on me
This year Halloween fell on a weekend
Me and Geto Boys are trick-or-treating
Robbing little kids for bags
Till a old man got behind our a*s
So we speeded up the pace
Took a look back and he was right before our face
He'd be in for a squabble no doubt
So I swung and hit the n*gga in his mouth
He was going down we figured
But this wasn't no ordinary n*gga
He stood about six or seven feet
Now that's the n*gga I'd be seeing in my sleep
So we triple-teamed on him
Dropping them motherf*cking B's on him
The more I swung, the more blood flew
Then he disappeared and my boys disappeared too
Then I felt just like a fiend
It wasn't even close to Halloween
It was dark as f*ck on the streets
My hands were all bloody, from punching on the concrete
God damn homey
My mind is playing tricks on me

My brother suffered from schizophrenia before he died. In times of clarity, he was able to explain his feelings to me in a cogent way. Of every piece of media ever created, this is the one that I think accurately depicts what he described to me. If you know someone suffering from that horrible disease, pay close attention to this song. And please pray for everyone suffering from that horrible horrible affliction.

The way the lyrics paint a picture is poetry
Seriously might be the greatest hip-hop song of all-time. Discusses trust issues, hood life, mental health, and ends with a plot twist. Hard beat, great lyrics. Should be talked about more.

Rare for a song to NOT have a hook and be a classic! One of the best beats of all time.
Yeah that’s interesting impossible to happen nowadays haha
I think that's part of what makes it so great. No hook, great rhymes and storytelling
yup
The Track 'N Misery' from Big Syke's album 'Evil Minded Gangtas' also doesn't have a hook but (in my opinion) is the best song on the album.
Today, perhaps. Back then, it was more common for rap songs without hooks to be considered classics: Ice Cube's Today Was a Good Day, Warren G's Regulator, Dr Dre's Dre Day, etc.
This is how someone from the hood tells a story.
One of the best hip hop tracks ever made!!
That fight with your conscious ain't no joke!
no its not
Big facts shit change you
No fight with your conscious imagine you’re your own conscious and all the things that worry you are only out of programmed insecurity through things like fear
When I have anxiety attacks, yeah definitely ain't no joke
I can relate to this as someone who suffers from PTSD. Always ready to fight, always on the lookout, waiting for disaster.
Try to get Cognitive behavioral therapy, your central nervous system will break down at some point when your constantly in fight or flight mode.
"I'm like a cat with only a few lives left & running from the shadows. Watching my back waiting for the attack that I know is coming."
Different genre, but a very fitting line.
Lumpenproletarier, what happens when your CNS breaks down? Just wondering, since I’ve had severe PTSD for almost 20 years …

Im a 1990 baby and im here in 2023 to say i still listen to face 💯✊🏿
I'm 44yrs old and spent 25yrs doing crime and on heroin in and out of jail doing 3 years at a time and I still come back to this getto shit memories of my teen years. No matter how long I'm clean and crime free I still never feel like I will ever belong in society, not after being outside of it for so long but I have kids so I stay out of shit for them not for me because half the time I think I prefer jail sad but true.
staying clean brother
Maybe ya didn't make the best of choices in the past, but you're a good man for being there for your kids. Don't forget it brother

What does a white girl, 38yrs old, from a little boating town on Lake Michigan have in common with Geto Boys' "My minds playing tricks on me" have?
Life, struggle, understanding, community & RESPECT 💯
"I often drift when I drive."
That makes me tear up Everytime
Could u explain
He doesn't care if he dies I think is what it means
I became suicidal after my girl past away unexpectedly. People would ask me how I'm doing?
I would respond I often drift when I drive.
@@davidlenz7817 I'm sorry for your loss. Stay strong ❤️

Not even a fuckin' psychologist could explain better the inner "war" between one and his/her thoughts. Word! A legend song.
This about CiA mind Kontrol ..whites using technoogy to make people go crazy
Uh no its not
@@kwentemakradveli6355 this track about the rapper facing a near death situation, trauma. Constantly worrying over being watched, no matter how rich n happy you are, your subconscious can be your biggest enemy and best friend in life.
Kid Cudi talks about that very same war in his LP dropped this year. good call, man.
@@kwentemakradveli6355 what the fuck is wrong with you? Not to mention that you look white yourself.

Scarface Tiny Desk brought me here at the closing of 2023!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song is so brutally honest about mental illness and the fact it's from 1991 blows my mind. People just didn't used to talk about this stuff and I'm glad things are changing. This song most certainly played a part in that
Has nothing to do with mental illness. It's about the "side affects" of selling their souls to the devil.
Scarface truly is the Edgar Allen Poe of rap. Real storytelling about the dark and macabre. Geto Boys were too real so that gangsta rappers had to take a back seat
This about CiA mind Kontrol ..whites using technoogy to make people go crazy
For real. I listened to the whole album today and it all makes so much more sense. Trophy hit harder Bc its still that way today.
They knew how to use the iambic pentometer, they must have had an English literature professor help them with their rap songs they couldn't have done this on their own
I’m his no problem power
@@melissapacheco2598 the album is called We Can't Be Stopped. I liked the album cover where scarface and willie d were pushing bushwick bill on a hospital bed. Bushwick bill was the dopest member of the group in my opinion
When you hear "They don't make 'em like they used to," this video is a great example. One of the best rap songs ever.
