This song is nostalgiac to me, and I feel at home when I hear it. My dad played it nonstop on his violin when I was young, and I feel like im young and carefree again.
Jayson Eubanks my sentiments as well. I gave up " country/ western" music years ago. There is no soul left in this so called music these days. The old time tunes are the only ones left that interest me now. And there are still millions left to be heard.
TRUE FACT: "My shoes is all torn up my toes are sticking out / I gonna get some corn whisky I'm going up the spout". This is in fact the origin story of the Itsy Bitsy Spider's climb.
I love how he immediately notices the couple bowhairs that give up the ghost once he starts cooking in "Picking the Devil's eye" but just goes "uh oh!" and keeps on chugging. Amazingly composed and so comfortable!
Listening to those ringing double strings & the open tuning would surely suggest a Scandinavian influence to the development of Appalachian Mountain Music.
The Scotts did the same thing with lower tuned drone strings to imitate bagpipes that the British banned centuries ago. You could be put to death for playing them.
Jack o'Diamonds=Robie Donach Gorrach(SCelt)=Toptli=idol... Lord our flesh(caribou/elk/horned being)=Tonacatecuhtli(Nauatl/Tonalamatl)...coloa tlaca(N)=coiled being.

I can't believe this doesn't have more views, but if it did would it be as special? Rebels, and outlaws is special. 😁
Thank you so much for posting this !! This is almost exactly the way Tommy Jarrell played it ! bruce played it well !
Bruce Molsky is a fantastic musician.....none better!!!!
I was watching intently and there was smoke coming out of that fiddle. Go Bruce go!
A E A C#. You can hear it most clearly when he plucks the top 3 strings.
Calico tuning same as "Grinsby's Hornpipe" and "Picking the Devil's Eye"
He definitely owns that tune
I still give it to tommy Jarrell his version is the definitive for me
That man can sing and play
Picking The Devil's Eye is an American tune but the tune for Jack of Diamonds is Scottish in origin and is known over there as Robie Donadh Gorrach.
One of my longtime favorite songs.
This guy is insane! Crazy good on the fiddle.
God I love these old fiddle tunes.

An excellent recording. I just saw Bruce last night at the Cedar in Minneapolis. Loved it. Pickin' the Devil's Eye is one of my favorites.
He just made my night. God bless him.
I have always wanted a colonial style wedding. I wish I was rich enough to hire Bruce to play a full Playlist of songs just like this at it.
Amateur footage? Wow, I'm impressed. Thanks for sharing this.
damn I love this!

Never thought of that. Does sound like a Hardanger fiddle.

Love Bruce. This song is way different than Blind Lemon's and Henry Townsend's versions of the title.
Bruce is bringing back his tune and the tradition to his ancestors . This IS the Scandinavian folk music tradition - with a little twist ;-)
great Trolltuned song!
THAT THE OLD TIME WAY TOO PLAY IT
He done sawed the hair off that bow!!
Getting close to playing with just a stick.

Hey, just so you know, these are both American tunes. Not sure exactly what region, but they're both from the US.
🇺🇸 ❤
If you like this check outTommy Jarrells version of this "Drunkin hiccups".
What crosstune is his fiddle?
It seems to me it's AEAC# (low to high)
Callico tuning, sometimes called Black Mountain Tuning.
Heaven hill Kentucky whiskey
I wonder if Mr. Molsky has ever heard of Tommy Jarrell?....Here's the link to his version: ruclips.net/video/15C1eNNhdr0/видео.html ENJOY!
