Question of the Day: How old were you when you had your first eye exam?

      6. My parents were grasping at straws trying to figure out why I was doing so poorly at school. Turns out that I could see clearly more that a couple feet away from my face!

We see this often with kids having trouble at school. I've had children labelled with learning disabilities, but after getting glasses they started catching up quickly.

In 2018, I went to the eye doctor for the first time in a decade because I wanted new glasses, and they were able to catch early stage glaucoma before any visual field loss had occurred. I am now a strong advocate for periodic comprehensive eye exams.

Awesome!! Thanks for sharing. You are absolutely correct. It's so important for yearly checkups fit the eyes, just as it is for your teeth and overall health.

As a young lady with glaucoma, I strongly stress people with no vision problems to get an eye exam to catch unknown eye problems. For example, my eye condition, is very sneaky and it will steal your sight without you knowing it.

Absolutely correct. Thank you for your advise. I wish more people would take it for their sake!

I have had reading class for a few years but I think my eyes are getting worse, I’m only 13 but my eyes seem to get old faster than me. I get really bad double vision and things in the distance fade in and out of blurry ness and I get really but headaches. Heading back to the eye doctor in a few weeks.

Hope you get some answers. I would also recommend looking for a provider who fits Neurolenses. This may be a very good option to help you with some of the symptoms that you mentioned. Look into it!

I remember my exam conclusion being 20/30 but haven't the foggiest eye-dea when that was.... I am 46 years old. I found your videos from a search for eye exam. Thanks doc!

"Eye-dea" 😉 lol, I like it! The key is that eye exams are for keeping your eyes healthy, whereas glasses are a tool used if needed. Glad you liked the video!

@@TrueFocusEyeCare glad YOU enjoyed that ;)
Absolutely! I reside in North Central Texas but, if I was in FL, I'd be looking you up. Will be going to set up an appointment for an exam due to vision that is a bit blurred. Find myself squinting to read things far off and close up. Have OTC readers though they're not doing it for me. Any suggestions are appreciated.

@@bobbytelevision I just suggest that you ask plenty of questions. You may actually be able to use a weak OTC readers for night driving or just to crisp it up. And don't be afraid of going up in power. They will relax your eyes, not make them lazy.

    Hi True Focus,
It is always good to hear your review, of when I should check my Snellen Visual Acuity, and possible need for a medical exam, looking for a detached retina.

    • @TrueFocusEyeCare
      @TrueFocusEyeCare  3 года назад

Keep in mind a clarity check does not account for subtle changes in the mid to peripheral retina. If people waited to see an eye doctor when they notice blurry vision, then there would be a lot more blindness in the world. Not just retinal detachments, but many other issues and some that can be reversed if found early.
Just out of curiosity, why do you specify Snellen in many of your comments?

Absolutely love the white board :) -- Great information! Overall presentation = love it! Very nice breaking it down and teaching the viewer. I also appreciate that small central area only for 20/20 but so much more, including the prevention of potential health issues. Also, great mentioning other things that can affect vision - like the environment and binocular vision. I appreciate the notes for everyone too that prescriptions change AND health concerns are also important during "regular" care to insure the patient does well. I Really appreciate your points. Your patients are lucky to have these resources and your attention to detail.

This one one of the greatest perks of being a doctor - the opportunity to educate others in how to live a healthy and happy life. Of course it helps that I had such great teachers! 😉

Enjoyed your video! I was 6 yrs old for my first professional eye exam. The others were just part of the school exam and I was only required to say yes or no to the questions 'clear or blurry.' I had never seen clear before so just answered yes to clear. I guess they never asked what it was I was supposed to be seeing. My first pair of glasses ended up being bifocals because I was very nearsighted!!!

Wow, I'm glad school screenings are not that way anymore, but kids are smart. And will say whatever they can to get what they want, our what they think the adult wants to hear. Thanks for your honesty!

I did not have an eye exam till I was in my 20s. Only because my husband was in Optometry school and he needed practice!
