Fun Fact: Lord Shen was one of the hardest characters to animate in the entire Kung Fu Panda franchise, being likened to animating 6 characters at once!
Lord Shen's real villainy lol
And they did it anyway, maximum effort.
Hey… I love your content but did you ever check the evil eye of NEMESIS? the comic book? If not you should check it out… keep it up
LORD SHEN THE MOST EVIL 😈 🌋😈😈😈💀😈😈😈🌋🌐🌋🌋🌋🌋
This is the reply section @@Mougly_Punk
It's ironic. The prophecy Shen overheard said a creature of black and white would defeat him, yet if you look at how he died, the thing that ultimately defeated him was himself. A creature also of black and white
He was, as Oogway said, a victim to the illusion of control
!!!!!!!!!!!!
On top of that, you can think of his mindset at the time as another being. If he succumbed to humility and changed, he would have defeated that part of himself. Thus becoming a new person entirely.
I would belive but Shen has some red in him
“One Often Meets There Destiny On The Path They Take To Avoid It”
@@x-rex7236 he got that dawg innim
Think one of the biggest reasons why Shen thinks his parents never loved him was because they learned he was going to die but punished him for eliminating a perceived threat, he doesn’t get why they side with the pandas and not him who was supposed to be killed by one. He was punished for “self defense”
In an interview with the the writers they had said that during shen's childhood he was treated differently due to his lack of color which also contributed to the hate. However, this was cut from the movie.
You can also see how his parents reacted to his inventions. They didn't trust their own son and sought help from a soothsayer. distrust from parents can be pretty traumatic to people. along with him being a different color and all the doubts his parents have own him, add up and Shen just assumes that his parents hate him even though he knows they love him, evident from the interval scene with the soothsayer.
@@muhammedzayan4399 But Shen as the soothsayer said saw darkness in the fireworks unless the soothsayer is lying this means Shen was never a very good person so I dont think their distrust of his inventions wasnt injustified
Hmmm, but the soothsayer said that "if" he chose the wrong path, meaning he had a choice rather or not to kill the pandas. Even though his parents were scared, he fact that his first impulse was to kill the pandas instead of thinking it through became really troubling. Plus she probably didn't include the fireworks to not raise their fear and he literally slaughtered an animal village. Any compassionate, sane being would be horrified. But it seems like all of it could've been solved with proper communication 😕
One thing I noticed was his lack of loyalty to his henchmen, when the head wolf refused to fire on his own men Shen killed him on the spot and did it himself.
Because those are mercs, not serving soldier
@@felixsubakti6907
They where the Royal guard of Gongnan City.
Shen was the only one who befriended the wolves during his youth, which is why they remained Loyal even after his banishment.
@@Test-pm1le It sad that Shen once cared for the wolves and his powerhungryness blinded him of his pass friendship, seeing them as pawns instead of people who have been hurt by pass events as he has.

While sounds ridiculous, this dialogue reveal that Shen just unable to let it go. He's not just angry that Po able to found peace, he's also jealous.
Leave it to Dreamworks to say "Yeah our villain just pulled a Fire Nation on the panda community" in the opening minutes of its film. That's how crazy villainous Shen was (being voiced by Gary Oldman certainly helped).
you know a movie meant for children is gonna be lit when it starts with genocide
Don't forget about the straight-up mindrape Horde Prime does
A lot of dem are still alive though
I have a head canon that the first 3 villains represent the 3 battles
Tai lung represents the body
Shen represents the mind
Kai represents the spirit
thats the idea which is why i dont like the idea of a kung fu panda 4 since to me its just shameful nostalgia bait bringing back tai lung(but not really)
EXCELLENT WORK.
@@username.exenotfound2943 They are clearly going for a 'passing the torch' kinda movie. If they do it right, it can be a good closing to the series. On the other hand, it could really be just nostalgia bait and go to the hall of 'pieces of media that the fans pretend aren't canon'.
Tbf that has been a lot of people’s perspectives for a long time
@@username.exenotfound2943 I don't like it because Po's story arc ended in a satisfying way in KFP3. I feel there's no story left to tell after that.
I will love Lord Shen. He’s such an underrated villain, in my opinion. And Gary Oldman voiced him so well.
He actually has a huge following. But yes... Gary Oldman was outstanding
fucking reznov voiced him bruh
This is step one
Secure the gunpowder!!!
In my opinion, Shen wouldn't have never worked without Gary Oldman's voice. His voice is what makes Shen so threatening
Fun fact about Lord Shen: When Po sees Shen’s "eyespots" (his feathers) he gets traumatic experience and dazes off. That’s because in real life, peacocks uses the "eyespots" in their tail feathers to protect them from predators as a psychological defense
Wtf?
Theres a species that just looks at you "menacingly" ????
Damn, i need evolution to gimme dat
@@GengUpinIpin its kinda similar to Zebras having their skin like that, the white and black movement makes the onlooker dizzy and increase their odds of running away
@@HaxeRainMore specifically, it breaks up their outline in a herd. Predators want to pick out a chosen individual to take down, but it gets a lot harder when that individual blends in with dozens of others with a confusing pattern
Gary Oldman really helped make a peacock a threatening villain
1. Gary Oldman's performance absolutely elevated the material
2. I love how, even though Shen is an *evil* basterd, they don't shy away from showing that he has a softer/more vulnerable side. You can tell that he is afraid of his prophesized death, that deep down he grieves his parents and wishes that he could fill the gaping hole in his soul that the absence of their love left in him. Heck, in some of the deleted scenes its implied that the Fortuneteller was basically his nanny, making their interactions *very bittersweet*
But instead of dealing with these emotions, which would have also changed his fate ironically, he buries them with ambition and hatred.
Shen is an amazing villain that really stands out in an alredy amazing movie.
The thing about fate is that you can't change it, which is also why Shen is so terrified of the future. He already knows what's coming but can't escape it.
@@mrbigglezworth42 "One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it."
@@mrbigglezworth42 Yes you can change it.
@@andyfriederichsen By definition, no you can't. That's the entire point and it's why arguments about and against free will exist.
@@mrbigglezworth42 And fate is complete nonsense. Shen only met his end at the hands of a black and white warrior because of the path he took in life that made it a guarantee.
another interesting way to view Shen’s fate is that he was never destined to be defeated by an actual warrior of black and white like the prophecy was told
The “Warrior of Black and White” was Shen himself; the white is him and the black was the darkness in his heart. He was being told his own evil will be his own downfall; he could’ve chosen a more open-minded approach but he ultimately decided the most violent solution.
Well keep in mind that Shens main color pallette is black, white, and red.
He was a warrior of black and white himself.
"It's your parting gift, in that, it will part you. Part of you here, part of you there and part of you way over there staining the wall!"
Remains one of my favorite villain quotes to this day.
Definitely in the top ten best villain quotes.
The way he delivers “STAINING the WALL” is just perfect for the character, Gary oldman goat
@@jeremiahwalker7548 Yep. It is CHILLING!!
menacing without ever seeming cheesy. modern action movies could learn from this dialogue!
Honestly the thing i find scary about Shen is how close he was to winning. Had Po never become the Dragon Warrior then he wouldn't have had the training or drive to defeat him, and Po's last stand before Shen's fleet was THE last obstacle before the war on China could begin
Had Po not been there Shen would have won and conquered China, possibly even taking out The Five to ensure that there was absolutely no one capable of getting in the way
Tai Lung technically got what we wanted too, however his hopes and dreams left him heavily disappointed when the true Secret of the Dragon Scroll is not some ancient technique for him to learn.
@@jabbathehutt83 But to make the scroll special by believing it's special.
Nah....Shifu can stop Shen.

The Vile Eye covering the REAL villains of cinema
Who ?
@@aidanhever3369the glorified genocidal chicken of course
It is interesting that Shen's weapons are curvy swords, fans and spears. This would lead one to think that his martial art is Xingyiquan. Another interesting fact is that Xingyiquan has a style called Chicken Style. One of the most unusual weapons in Xingyiquan vast arsenal is called the Chicken Sickle Sword.
Lord Shen made the mistake of letting his soothsayer go. She not only constantly warned him of his demise but also saw it through by aiding Po when he was beaten by Lord Shen the first time around.
But the most interesting thing is that the soothsayer also helped raise Shen as his nanny. Rather than execute or imprison her he let her go much like how his parents banished him.
It’s possible if Shen has ANY redeemable qualities it’s that he can show mercy to those he loved or respected. But only in a limited capacity.
What I like about this villain is, that even though he shows no redeeming qualities, no remorse or hesitation in his dark path, he finally not only fails because he was unwilling to stray from that path, but also because he had a shred of something else in him.
He let the soothsayer leave unharmed, where the clichee check all boxes villain would have killed her for no reason and then she fishes Po out of the river, heals him and gives him the clarity he needs to defeat Shen.
And the moment he does release her is my favorite moment of that villain, just like Tai Lung´s moment of hesitation when hearing the apology from his father figure.
Lord Shen's always been an S-Tier Dreamworks villain! His design, wickedness, cultural references, and personality just clicked as a fan favorite
Shen is probably my favourite DreamWorks villain. He’s cool, threatening but also really funny in a way that doesn’t ruin his intimidation.
Something you didnt touch on was the idea of balance represented in color. Po is black and white in near equal measures. Shen is purely white. It reflected the lack of balance in who he is and how it ultimately spelled his end.
Also in Chinese culture white tends to represent death and evil
"One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it."
-Master Oogway
Well yes, but actually that was Sophocles. It's a paraphrase of the final line from Oedipus Rex. Coming up with the perfect philosophy quote to humiliate your enemies as you defeat them is the true kung fu😂.
@@sophiejones3554 LOL that makes sense
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
He eliminated the Pandas because he thought that they would kill him, depriving him of his parents love, and them of their son. Though the banishment was the final nail in the coffin that made this peacock think his parents hated him.
The best villain in the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
Ditto!!! And it looks like he’s making an UNEXPECTED return for the 4th film due out next month.
Fax lung is a very close second tho
Facts!!!
if seen the first kung fu panda so if he is a better villain id have to watch 2 and 3
Tai Lung is still tough to beat though
an S-tier villain in cinema in general
One often finds his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it" Master Oogway. You make your own choices. Shen could have truly become a great ruler if he had focused on his present. But so focused he was on his future that he doomed himself
He’s is such a cool villain, while Kai and Tai Lung were terrifying in their own right, Shen was just a cool, suave, James Bond villain type. Love him. Hopefully we’ll see a video on Tai Lung.
Agreed. They’re all great villains but Shen is the most unique one
Think he’s waiting on KFP4 until a vid on Tai Lung comes out
Shen has always been more intimidating than Tai Lung in my opinion. Tai Lung is evil because he thought he was betrayed and attacked people due to his anger. Shen was evil because he always saw violence as the answer to everything, and that's just a very horrifying way of thinking.
The reason for his creation was because the villain of the first movie: Tai Lung was a sympathetic victim of circumstances. Shen, on the other hand, was created to be most hated since he was the one who massacred Po's village, especially his mother.
I love this villain! He is the very definition of ‘a man meets his fate on the very path he takes to avoid it’.
One thing I think could have been mentioned is that, I think Shen is partially inspired by one of the darkest periods in history for China and it's people. The Second Sino-Japanese War up to World War II
Not only are the markings in his feathers supposed to represent Yin and Yang, as well as what Vile mentioned about the symbolism of White in Chinese Culture, but the markings are incredibly similar to the Imperial Japanese Red Sun in terms of how they're drawn. I think Shen's background of royalty is also partially inspired by Emperor Hirohito of Japan, who either ordered or allowed the genocidal war crimes their armies committed against Chinese people(and many others).
Shen is a representation of real world evil manifested in the form of a peacock.
I always interpreted Shen to be a metaphor for the British Empire’s invasion of China. He’s white and red, like the English flag, and he’s ignorant to cultural systems like fate and kung fu, instead vying for cannons, armies etc
Could easily represent the Japanese too.
@@kingelijah8049 oh damn yeah!
The most interesting thing about Shen's behaviour is how he's a ruthless genocidal sociopath but still carries himself like a rich spoilt nobleman with how he treats his henchman, goes about his interactions with the Soothsayer and prepares for meeting Po for the first time. Adds a layer of depth to him and really sells his plausibility as a medieval era villain all the better.
Lord Shen is easily my favorite Kung Fu Panda villain and the best one of them all. Not only because he physically but psychologically threatens anyone who questions him. He's also the reason Po was found, adopted and raised by Mr. Ping. How he met and befriended Master Shifu and the Furious Five as well as how he became the Dragon Warrior in the first place.
Someone pointed out that the different villains (so far) represent different trials for Poe to overcome: Tai Lung represents the physical, sheer force. Shen is the psychological, the mind. Kai represented the spirital, Chi. It will be interesting to see what the next villain will represent.
There is also of course the fact that Tai Lung is connected to Shifu, Shen to Poe and Kai to Oogway. Who could the Chameleon be connected to?
My guess would be that Chameleon represents the "dark mirror" to Po. Perhaps, as Shen is connected to Po's past, Chameleon will be connected to Po's future, a warning of sorts should he stray onto darker paths. Since previous prophesies were mainly just spoken, and those attempting to avoid it fail, the key to avoiding this dark fate could be Po confronting the consequences of it before he's strayed too far.
@@dionettaeon My thoughts exactly, The Chameleon will be the ultimate trial for Po.
Lol.
Chameleon represents 'being too short'
Representa arruinar una franquicia
In the end, it all comes down to the very lesson Po tried to impart on him. 'You have to let go of those things from the past, because it just doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is what you choose to be now.'
Shen was a man deeply scarred and defined by his past and believed that ones past created the kind of person you are in the present. And then along comes Po. A man who should, by Shen's logic, be deeply scarred, angry and traumatized by the things Shen did to him. But he isn't. Po let his past go and focused on the present and Shen just can't comprehend how such a thing is possible. And so he rebukes Po's lesson, because to accept it would mean he'd be forced to acknowledge that his entire life could have gone right for him, if he'd wanted it to and the only reason it didn't is because he chose to live a life of misery. Shen created his own pain, his own misery and even in the end, he can't accept that it could have been different. Even in the last minutes of his life, Po offered him a way out and he refused to accept it, because he couldn't cope with the fact that he was a monster of his own making.
As many people have already pointed out, the warrior of black and white was never Po, it was Shen himself. He externalized the threat of the prophecies onto the pandas and Po in particular, but failed to grasp the symbolism of the prophetic warning. Po is a warrior of black and white and right before their final bout, he even resembles the symbol of Yin and Yang for a few seconds, which freaked Shen out, but despite all those external signs, Shen was always his own warrior of black and white. He defeated himself. Po would never have been a threat to him if he'd left the pandas alone. But Shen refused to accept that. Even in the very last seconds of his life, he chose to fight Po and refused to save his own life when he saw he was about to get splattered by a falling canon (a weapon of his own creation), preferring even death over accepting the truth.
Shen's death is a perfect representation of his life. Blinded by his own ambitions, he severed the cords that held his life together (distancing himself from his family, taking the throne by force, etc.), and by the time he realized what that ambition had cost him, it was far too late
yes! i rarely hear anyone talk about how perfect that fight sequence is, how it's a near perfect metaphor for the villain's own life!
He didn’t distance himself from his family. His parents banished him for the genocide of the pandas. He thought their banishment of him meant they hated him, but what he didn’t realize is that they actually loved him and were at their wit’s end with him because they didn’t know what to do with him. I mean, how cool did he think his parents were going to be with him for massacring an entire race of people? It’s sad that his parents had to resort to that and that his banishment resulted in him building up anger and resentment towards them. You can tell that deep down he still grieved his parents and was still deeply hurt by their actions, but he still refused to take accountability for his actions. His actions caused them extreme sadness and despair to the point that they actually died from having to send him away forever. Shen’s actions were dictated by the anger and resentment of his past and his fear and apprehension of the future. That’s why he never found inner peace. Everything he did was dictated by the two extremes. It’s like Po said in his final attempt to get Shen to let go of his past and change his ways, “All that matters is what you choose to do now” and that’s coming from someone who had every right and reason to be vengeful and angry at Shen for what he did to the pandas and especially his mother since she died because of his actions. Ultimately, Shen ended up being the victim of his own blind anger, resentment, and hatred.
Gary Oldman did an amazing job and managed to not get overshadowed by Ian's McShanes great villain in the first 1
One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.
The reason why I love Lord Shen is because he was voiced by Gary Oldman, one of my favorite actors (and crushes) of all time!
A lot of people seem to miss this. In the final battle, A warrior of black and white does Shen in, but it's not Po. Po offers a ray of light. The warrior of black and white that undoes Lord Shen, is Lord Shen.
exactly, it was never po that defeated him, it was shen himself! po was merely acting in defense of himself and his homeland the entire time. it was shen who murdered the pandas, it was shen who initiated his conquest of china. ultimately it was shen who initiated every event that led to his demise. that final 'fight sequence' was simply a metaphor for shen's journey this whole time, he thought po was the one who needed to be defeated, but in reality he was destroying himself!
Oogway described Lord Shen best
“One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it”
i remember seeing KFP 2 in theatres as a kid and being absolutely thrilled by shen. i hope i get the same feeling if he comes back in KFP 4
“Crushed under the weight of own evil” was such a bar🔥
By far and away, my favourite line from KFP 2 is "The only reason youre still alive, is that I find your stupidity *mildly* amusing."
Heck yeah! Shen is my personal favorite villain in the series! In that note, could a potential episode on Tai-Lung be a possibility or even Kai?
singular voice like in Kung fu panda 4 from shen is literally a bird squawking
Tai Lung = Best Fighter.
Shen = Best Villain.
Kai = Best theme.
Chamaleona:
you know he is evil because he is voiced by Gary Oldman....
Amazing video as always Vile! You're the best! And another thing to point out is that Shen's sigil (Plus the symbols on his tail feathers) are a dead ringer for the Imperial Japanese war flag. It makes it all the more significant given the atrocities the japanese commited in their attempted conquest of china during ww2, Plus pandas being considered China's national animals.

BEST villain in the franchise! Gary oldman did a fantastic job! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Pleasw do Tai Lung next
Dude killed Pandas and actually expected his parents to be okay with it. What kind of logic is that?
The logic of a psychopath: "I removed the threat! Aren't you proud of me?"
That’s how you know how insane and truly far gone Shen is
shen's parents indeed loved him: any common citizen would have been executed on the spot for the atrocities shen had comitted. but shen's parents merely exiled him. an act of mercy and love.
Which is a "wrong" choice for everyone, sadly.

Yes, a worth villain. An analysis of this will be legendary.
I'm so happy you've covered Lord Shen! One of the best well written cruelest-villain character in animated movies
A lot of Shen's design and actions are eerily reminiscent of Imperial Japan during World War 2.
Another BANGER from Garry Oldman
This was a fantastic video. I didn't even think about the colors of Shen and the implications that had. Great work!
seriously like the best villain i've ever seen. everything about him is all so good
his character design is god tier. ofc all the character designs in kfp are super good but i LOVE the way shen looks and moves. how his color scheme is all white and it's yet another way in which kfp subverts expectations because white is usually associated with goodness and purity. and the red accents really make it a sick looking character. not to mention the fact that in every single scene he's in, he's ALWAYS illuminated by red lighting, even on his final moments! the color symbolism on kfp2 goes OFF. red represents evil, and shen is pure evil. also, his fighting style is beautiful. the feather knives are cool as fuck and he actually uses his tail during the fight with master rhino to distract his enemies and throw them off!! just pure love for this design. plus he looks elegant and classy and then he's just completely unhinged in some scenes its so good
then his actual character i adore. he's interesting. you understand his motives even though you know he's completely irredeemable! in his eyes his parents rejected him for no reason and he thinks they exhiled him out of hate. he actively refuses to acknowledge otherwise because he's so caught up in the past, he's so obsessed with proving his greatness to himself and his late parents that he can't fathom the idea that they truly loved him. he can't let go! also his relationship with the soothsayer is so good. she genuinely felt sorry for him despite everything he'd done and she so badly wanted him to see the truth, its so interesting. and he just lets her go instead of having her killed because he too cared about her to some extent.
and then there's his relationship to po. which is so GOOD!! in this movie, po is yang and shen is yin (despite shen being white and po being mostly black! expectation subversion subversion!). they're foils. their destinies have been intertwined since po was a baby! everything shen did to try and stop his destiny from happening caused po's life to happen the way it did and bring him to his own destiny; stopping shen. like oogway said, one often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it. the traumatic ties they have are just too good. shen literally took everything from po, he left him without a home and without his parents, just like shen was. and yet po was able to let go of the past and focus on who he was now, and he came out on top. however shen couldnt and that cost him his life in the end. and another great scene is when po confronts him at the factory and shen projects his own thing with his parents onto po's!! he believed his own parents hated him and didn't love him, so instead of telling po the truth about his, he says "your parents didn't love you". again, he never lets go of the past. also! while shen is always lit up by red, po is constantly surrounded by golds and greens. during the inner peace fireball scene it's very clear, when po catches a fireball and redirects it it turns from red to gold (the clouds in the background too as the scene progresses)
and bonus he's SO funny in various scenes. like his perfectionism and unhingedness make for hilarious moments in the film despite him being a terrifying and dangerous villain. also bonus bonus, the voice acting is top notch and his music cues are gorgeous!
Lord Shen is my all time favorite Kung Fu Panda villain.
We finally get an episode on Shen! After so long!
I loved the final scene between Shen and the Soothsayer. Despite his cruelty, he still cared for her and chose to release her. Shen knew deep down that the Soothsayer was right, but his pride would not allow him to stop. He pushed forward, no matter the cost.
"Goodbye, Shen. I wish you happiness,
"Happiness must be taken! And I will take mine."
That final exchange between the two of them describes Shen and his tragic arc wonderfully.
Lord Shen always stood out to me in the franchise. A cold and suave villain with his army of rugged brutes and weapons. His ambitions that would be achieved through the cost of lives. Also kickstarted the series in his attempt to secure his future which would lead to his downfall.

Finally. The wait was 100% worth it. A perfect video.
Once again I'm going to suggest James Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes, and Luca Blight from Suikoden 2.
This analyzing evil is loooong overdue.
Lord Shen reminds me of Lord Frieza. Both characters committed a genocide of species due to a prophecy. Additionally, both Shen and Frieza are still ultimately defeated by a member of race they nearly eradicated. Their personalities are also not too dissimilar, with both Shen and Frieza being arrogant, prideful, vindictive, etc.
Excellent villain analysis as always

Yes! So the prophesied end of Lord Shen he overheard of a warriors or being of Black & White wasn’t really just Po, but himself. He did not change course, sought to overcome the fate of his decisions, and that lead to the black and white Peacock’s end
"Happiness is not something than can come naturally, but something that needs to be taken" that hits hard.

You should do an analysis for Lotso from Toy Story 3, he is one of the darkest Pixar villains.
Amazing video analisys to one of the Dreamworks greatest villains
Gary Oldmans greatest villain performance next to Agent Stanfield from Leon the Professional and Dracula from 1992 Bram Stokers Dracula
Also to add something about Lord Shen's design: his face is akin to how villain characters are depicted in Chinese opera. Usually those would have white and black painted on the face especially around the eyes.
Ronnie from raising kanan, very scary guy.
One of my favorite franchises of all time! Thanks vile! Wish you a happy valentine day! Please to tai lung!😊😊😊❤❤❤
Finally! I waited for this moment for years
One sugestion, do a analazing evil about the jones family from Prisioners
I certainly did not expect to see this villain covered. A very good choice!
A child who isn’t loved by the village, will burn it down for its warm embrace. That quote perfectly describes lord Shen. 😢
Some suggestions:
Analyzing Evil: Park Yeon-jin from The Glory
Analyzing Evil: Mahito from Jujutsu Kaisen
Geto over Mahito
Ok now you need to analyze Tai Lung.
I’m liking the new format Evil, also bangers selections and breakdown as of late
I was waiting for this one :)
Of the three villains of the series, I love Lord Shen the most because he has a personal connection and a reflection in the main character. He is very cool and smart too.
Shen closed his eyes and took solace in the fact that it wasn’t Po the panda who killed him, it was his very own creation. He was happy because in the end he was defeated by something that wasn’t Po proving the prophecy wrong.
You could argue that Po took out his entire army but still Shen fought till the very end and in the end he didn’t die by the hand of Po.
KFP2 is still my favorite animated movie of all time and Lord Shen is a large part of that. He’s funny, menacing and even kinda sad.
A great vid! Horus from 40k perhaps? A great case of feelings of inadequacy and other factors being taken advantage of
