Side note: About the "He will be defeated by a warrior of black and white." and Shen going to kill Po's entire species, there's actually a theory, so take this info with a grain of salt, that he also went to kill Snow Leopards, which is why Tai Lung is one of the few snow leopards we see (if you count the Kung Fu Panda TV show. I haven't seen it, but I was told that there's another snow leopard in it.)

Personally my favorite Shen line:

What viewers seem to forget is that Shen is also a Warrior of black and white but it's mainly overshadowed by his white and red Color scheme and Shen was technical killed by his own hand.
That's the fun part about the Prophecy. There are multiple ways to view it.😊
@@user-ki3xp2qd5f no, Po deflected Shen's attack, causing his demise. So in actuality, Shen did that to himself, Po only defended(deflected the attack) himself.
Shen would never cut a rope by accident... just saying. And the writing for this movie was too on point for him to have an out of character 'blind' rage moment.

5:28 actually, in the movie, po makes it clear he already knew he was adopted. when his father tells him he is adopted, he sais "i knew it!" then his father asks "who told you?" "no one but, c'mon!" . Po was confortable with his life till the start of the first movie, thats why he never brought it up. and in the start of the second movie is when they finally have this conversation

Corrections: the fortune teller was never on Shens side, Shen just had too much of an ego to let her die before he proves her wrong. The warrior of black and white that defeats shen is himself
The fortune teller was his nanny, hence her being a nanny goat. So he didn't want to kill her because she took care of him growing up, and he felt like she was more of a parent to him than his real parents.
This might be a reach but Shen is kinda black and white too and he also died to himself by cutting those ropes during his final fight with Po. just sayin
That's why people like the Prophecy. There's multiple ways to interpret it that can be valid.
Well if we know what we know about the 3rd movie the Pandas knew how to bend Chi which basically made them the Chinese equivalent of Wizards. So if Shen knew that and knew that the closest panda village was down the river to his city he would just jump the gun in trying to kill them(and failing since a bunch did survive or a least a good number of them migrating to a secret panda village) not knowing he was seen as evil by his parents.
Or metaphorically, Shen's beliefs were black and white, causing him to decide to die because he couldn't bring them into balance. Sort of like Javert.
One underrated moment that got me was when Shen ordered the wolf general to fire the cannon, but he refused as he knew it would put his troops in harm's way. Then Shen just straight up throws knifes into his throat right on screen, killing him
Tigress actually gets her backstory explained in "The secrets of the furious five" along with the other 4. I hate how they side lined them tbh

I was 9 when i saw this in theaters and it pissed my mom off because it had genocide. Which never came to mind as a possibility in a Jack Black Panda comedy.
8:35 Others have mentioned it before, but there's a theory floating around that the Warrior of Black and White... was Shen himself. Minus the red (which very well can simbolize blood and genocide), he's a black and white peacock, and due to his fighting skills you may as well consider him a warrior. The moment he went to commit mass murder, he sealed the prophecy, there was not turning back, he was going to be defeated by his own actions. During his final moments, one of the cannons falls on top of him, and he closes his eyes awaiting death by what he himself created. Admitedly, there's a minor problem with this theory, notably the use of the word "defeat", rather than something more straightforward than "kill", but dang it, this theory is too cool and it's my headcanon.

A good thing abt kung fu panda 4 is that it brought the first three films back into mainstream media, and we get to appreciate how GOOD they are (the second one is also my favorite)
I want to add that shen most likely painted his feathers red so one can look at it as defeating himself

12:01 I really like that line from Shen. Shen knows more than anyone there what it feels like to believe your parents do not love you; so Shen using that as a weapon after the scene where the fortune teller challenges his perspective on his parents is really interesting to me.
The "Black and White" refers to the peacock and not the panda. The peacock died as a result of its attack of its ship.
There was that short film explaining the furious five backstories. Tigress was in an orphanage and everyone was afraid of her.
And btw you do not seem to understand the movie at all, tigress didn't leave Po she litterly said she did not want to see his friend getting hurt, you can see her reach to Po at the end to not see him die and she wanted Po to stay alive. The fortune teller never switched teams, she was never on shen's team shen just kicked her out. And he did not find inner peace becuase of the death of his parents, he kept on having visions about his parents dying but not knowing what happened, he always fought back the memories which made him unpeacefull with himself, but at that moment he let his memories tell Po what really happened and he found out what happened. Then he found his inner peace. This movie is so amazing because even tho it is pretty childish sometimes it is very serious and very emotional, unlike the new movie which is just goofy in a bad way not serious at all.
Rewatching KFP 2 as a young adult, I genuinely cried, THATS HOW GOOD IT WAS REWATCHING IT ALL THOSE YEARS LATER.
12:19 she switched sides and helps po because shen tells her that she’s free to go earlier in the movie revealing that she wasn’t working for him on her own will, that’s why she’s living on her own by the river as well.
I just realised the genocide is like really similar to the airbender genocide in avatar
The prophecy is actually referring to Shen himself, since his mental state and the murderous actions caused by his insecurities will lead to his demise. In a scene, Shen is depicted as half white and half black, and at the end his own machine of genocide fell on him and killed him.
the warrior of black and white that would stop him, was himself, peacocks are usually not just 2 colors, he could have black feathers
15:30 i like to image shen decided to die there because he wanted to break the phrophecy of that "defeated by a panda" by instead dying to his own weapon falling on him...
so technically he died to his own weapon and his own hands and not defeated by a panda

As an avid Kung Fu Panda 2 lover, any video essays about this movie puts a smile on my face. I appreciate when people recognize this movie for more than just a child’s movie because I believe thats what it is. Honestly I think this is one of the more morbid films dreamwork has produced but I think thats why I love it so much.

I love the dynamic between Po and Tigress it's genuinely heartwarming and funny
You can feel the struggle with Po and genuinely fear for his life.
The jokes are actually funny.
The villain is interesting and threatening. He gives out deadly plans through wit and cunningness. He is just genuinely smart and that makes him terrifying as well as entertaining (Plus he's British we love that)
And some of my greatest memories from when I was a young child have this movie playing in the background.

To be fair about the lack of animal jokes for other characters, there are a good few, like Mantis getting annoyed over being called small or his joke about mantis mating practices (the whole eating his head thing), and there was that part where they made fun of Crane going “Ca-caw!” Of course they aren’t as prominent as Po’s jokes, but Po is the main character.

Kung Fu panda 1: 8/10- really good, self contained story about believing in yourself
Kung Fu panda 2: 10/10 surprisingly deep and emotional story about trauma and forgiveness
Kung Fu panda 3: 6/10 decent story, more comedic focused. Ok end to this good trilogy

15:40 I'm pretty sure this scene is actually Shen finding his inner peace finally, even if in a harsh way. He accepts his death knowing that he can finally be free of this awful life he put himself in. In Kung Fu Panda 1, Oogway says that one often meets their destiny on their path to avoid it, that's why it works that way. The reason Po was destined to defeat Shen is because Shen killed the Pandas, if he killed white tigers, it would have been a white tiger who was destined to defeat him most likely. Shen destroyed his own life on the path to make it better, so I'm pretty sure the writers intended to make that sequence more of Shen finding his inner peace finally even if not as fruitful and bountiful as Po's!

Honestly my favorite fact about the story is that Shen is also kinda black and white, so you can interpret the soothsayer's prediction as Shen defeating himself, and he does in fact cut the ropes that then lead to the canon he build crushing him. And yet it is still ambigious enough where soothsayer predicting Po is also a genuine option.

Kung fu Panda 2 reminds me a lot like Uncharted 2. Both being incredible sequals that came out of nowhere when the earlier movie/game was alright at best. Nobody expected these sequals to be as good as they are, but we are all glad they exist

That's because the 2nd one improved on everything the first one did and expanded the universe and raised the stakes without it seeming cheap or contrived. Of course there will always be someone out there vying for more power or control and unlike Tai Lung who just wanted the Dragon scroll and possibly to level the Valley of Peace, Shen wasn't going to stop until he destroyed the Kung Fu Masters (China's defense) and claimed more than Gongman city. Plus we get the tragic backstory of Po and it's a great foil to how Shen and Po both didn't have the best starts but still chose different paths. etc

Weird fact, Shen says that he’s been planning on ruling for 30 years. Meaning that he’s been banished for that long. So Po is at least 30. I kinda like that he’s that old since Po is kinda past his prime but still living his best years.

Tbf I do actually really like the third movie as well. It just has some more problems and it's not as good as the first two. but if you don't look at it comparatively I personally think it's still a good movie. It'd be cool if you made a video on that too, just to see what you think.
