I can’t believe how much you guys have learned about baseball, and how much you have embraced the sport! It’s awesome, and this was a great video to watch. I’d love for Ohtani to stay in Southern California, and go to the Dodgers.
22:59 I saw another video about that play. From what I remember, the runner was called out based on a technicality in the replay review system. Basically, the umpire on the field called the runner safe because he beat the tag, however, he did not signal that the runner was pushed off, which he should have. Because of this, when the defending team challenged the call, replay showed that the runner was tagged while off the base. Since replay doesn't care why the runner was off the base, he was called out after review (A fielder pushing a runner off a base is not reviewable and must be called by the on-field umpire at the time of the play). If the umpire had called the push off of the base, the runner would have been safe as that part of the play was already called by the on field umpire. Just a very weird loophole of MLB's replay review system.
You both are partially correct First base: run straight and touch, you're automatically safe (you lose this protection if trying to go toward 2nd base at all) Home plate: touch and you're safe 2nd & 3rd base: you MUST physically maintain contact with the base to remain safe It was absolutely a terrible call, officiating is unbelievably/criminally bad sometimes, but we'll NEVER replace umps with robots because of tradition/unions
On the topic of concussions, NASCAR driver Kurt Busch got a concussion at Pocono last year, and just over a year later had not returned to racing and announced he was still not medically cleared to race and struggles from the effects of the injury. He officially retired over a year after the wreck. Concussions are REALLY nasty, especially when they start repeating.
I'm a lifelong Orioles fan,and I can tell you what Kevin Brown said was putting the O's past lightly! We've had some years that were absolutely embarrassing. It matters not, now
Perhaps one of the strangest things this season was the often vilified Philly fans outpouring of support for a struggling Trea Turner. Prior to the standing ovation from the Philly faithful his batting avg was .235 and his slugging% was a measly .368. Since then (Aug 4) his batting avg is .370 and his slugging% is .704. That's a player who is now earning his $300 million contract! Now if only our pitching could stay consistent...☹️
To add to your final remark about the possibility of Ohtani going to Seattle and ending the Mariners' World Series drought, there would be another story arc going on if that happened: Seattle was (and still is) the team of Ichiro Suzuki, who played for the Mariners for many years and was a much-revered sports hero for many young Japanese baseball players and fans who grew up in the 2000s--including a certain Shohei Ohtani. Ichiro (who is often known just by his first name) retired from playing in 2019, but is still in Seattle as he is now a member of the Mariners front office. Over the years, Ohtani has developed a friendship with Ichiro, and whenever the Angels play in Seattle, they can be seen meeting up during pregame warmups. There are those who speculate that Ohtani would want to play for a team other than the Mariners so as to secure his own legacy rather than being referred to as "the next Ichiro," but who knows? Perhaps he will be the one to take his childhood idol's team to the World Series.
Dodgers makes a lot of sense. They can pay him a ton of money, LA is where the stars are, west coast is close to home, and like Ichiro in Seattle, Hideo Nomo (first major Japanese star player in MLB) played there and was a huge phenomenon for his day. Major issues with the UCL injury however, especially now that the Dodgers are really struggling with starting pitching needs (Julio Urias + injuries to other starters). So, who knows where Ohtani winds up. Seattle very well could be a possibility.
So with Elly he has been a touch overrated. A lot of Reds fans think he’s gonna be terrible which is stupid I might add. He has just had a lot of flashy plays but he is very strikeout prone and looks sometimes acts like things are too easy which leads to brain lapses and errors. But overall dude is gonna be great.
Coming from a Cubs fan he's Javy Baez but he's still young enough that you can teach that out of him. The Cubs staff let Javy be Javy because it worked for the 2 greatest years in Cubs fans life(2015-2016).
Concussions can last a few hours or over months sumtimes years it depends on the person and how they got 1. Only thing thats certain is once u get 1 its way easier to get another
It’s absolutely amazing that a summation of the 2023 season did not include the best team in baseball. Im mind blown, but I’m used to the Braves being always overlooked despite never being on top. It’s a real conundrum.
I have seen calls be missed even on replay. I guess no system is foolproof. They say that the call on the field will be upheld unless they see overwhelming evidence on replay that the call was wrong. I suppose it still comes down to a judgement call.
Elly is a case of perception. His stats aren't good at all. But he plays with a flare not seen very often from a rookie. Plus he puts assess in seats, which owners love.
As a resident of Las Vegas, the stadium they plan on building better be a dome or a retractable... ain't no way anybody is going to go to games in 105°+.
This video was made right before the *magic bullet* hitting 2 woman at the White Sox v A’s game in Chicago. Larger than normal attendance because there was a free concert right after the game (Vanilla Ice, I believe 😂.) Two woman are shot in the stands, they are escorted out & the game continues. After the game, fans find out the concert is canceled due to technical problems. Fans and media are still unaware of what happened in the 3rd inning!! After news broke, cops said it was an isolated incident and gun was mostly fired outside the stadium. Narrative changes to (this is the best): One of the woman brought the gun & it accidentally went off. She made it through the metal detectors by hiding the gun in her belly fat rolls - she has since denied this. Baseball, guns, fat people 🇺🇸😭
As somebody who has watched mega-market teams like the Yankees buy up the very best talent for years, it's always enjoyable to watch them crash and burn while a "budget" ball club like the Orioles show them how its done. Same thing has kind of happened to the Mets (spent huge money for subpar results), but that franchise has always had its problems, so I actually feel bad for Mets fans because they finally have ownership that is willing to do what it takes to win and it was an enormous bust, probably one of the worst front office gambles in recent memory. If I had to bet, I'd say Ohtani goes the LAD for a variety of reasons, but he had a recent UCL injury so that really puts a monkey wrench into things because the Dodgers are hurting for starting pitching (lost one of their best pitchers to some kind of domestic violence stuff, I haven't been following, but it's a repeat problem and was bad enough he's off the team and they painted over murals that featured him/etc). I'm still amazed Boone has his job in NYY. The rough part of that ejection when he was mocking the umpire is the umpire shot right back at Boone (when Boone said he stinks), Dias just replied "and what do you do? you stink!" or something like that. It was savage (there is a jomboy breakdown of it, maybe you've already reacted). The Yankees have lacked core pieces for most of this season and they didn't make any big moves at the trade deadline, so their front office seems okay with this kind of result which is really mystifying given how vicious the fans and NY sports media can be.
I’m not from Oakland, but I get the feeling even a lot of people who aren’t baseball fans there are upset. As you mentioned they’ve lost all their other teams.
Montreal Expos (they moved to DC, became the Nationals, in 2004) were the Oakland A’s. MLB *somewhat* got away with what they did to that franchise because social media wasn’t as mainstream. NBA to the NFL, have done this too. I could understand moving the Tampa Bay Rays to Orlando or something but it’s the way they do it. There’s really good documentary about the Baltimore Colts leaving in the middle of the night to Indianapolis, the Expos, Seattle SuperSonics (NBA)… You guys should check out the night Osama bin Laden was killed mini documentary from ESPN. Hope you guys are doing well!
Umpire's union unfortunately allows umps like Laz Diaz, CB Bucknor and Angel Hernandez to continue umpiring, despite having absolutely atrocious records, in any other profession, such high (and continuous) failure rate would definitely finish their carrer early, yet somehow they stay in the game, raking big bucks.
I think you guys have it right about that play at second. If he took his hand off on his own, he can be tagged out. But that was the wrong call - surprising after the video review.
A thing to watch for rookie seasons is that baseball teams get tons of data from your first year. Pitchers can learn to attack you with time. But Elly is the truth.
As a former oakland resident I have major love for the Town and think it's messed up that they allowed all the teams to be taken from the city. And i'm a Niners and Giants fan. A rival. But they shouldn't do what they do to the people of Oakland just cause they aren't a rich town that wants to give tax dollars for a stadium when the city needs other things.
It feels to me like the ball-strike calls at home plate have been more erratic this year than ever before. I can understand Boone's frustration, but you know when you go out there to make your point that you will be ejected. Sometimes you just gotta vent. Orioles still in first place, now by 3 games, Astros have caught and passed the Rangers. Royce Lewis (Twins) is another rookie who looks like the real deal.
The umpires union makes it almost impossible to fire bad umps but they can keep them from umping the biggest games. Angel hernandez sued the mlb for discrimination cause he hadn't umped a world series game in years or some shit and basically the answer from the league was "yeah you suck and we want to keep you away from big games."
Golden State used to play in Oakland as well for the NBA, but they moved in 2019 across the bay and now play in San Francisco. So Oakland has really gotten screwed. But it's not a big market and has a really bad rap as a city, so there are like zero incentives for owners to keep/bring their teams there.
Seems pretty likely to me that Ohtani ends up with one of the mega-rich teams like the Braves, Yankees, or Dodgers. A lot of the smaller market teams probably feel like they can't commit the kind of dollars that Ohtani is going to want to just a single player.
As a Braves fan I would love to see Ohtani in a Braves jersey, I just don’t see the front office willing to fork over that much money. The Braves specifically AA the GM likes to lock up young players before they hit FA to huge team friendly deals. I just don’t see them giving out a big contract even for a massive superstar like Ohtani. Then again the Braves also just became publicly traded company so they might be in the picture
It's Baseball, that's how it works. It's one of the reasons why Baseball is so garbage, no matter how small of a market team you have in the NFL or NBA, you always have a legitimate chance to change things for the better, and for that change to be sustainable for years and years. With MLB, if you can draft super well and have a really good GM who can make really smart moves with whatever payroll he has, and a really good manager, you are still at best only going to be able to hover around making the postseason each year (like the Brewers).
To be fair Elly's stats aren't too great. I was at the game where Elly hit for the cycle, and he looks amazing and produces cool highlights, but the highlights are all most people get to see out of him. I'm assuming he will progress and become one of the league's better players over the next few years, but right now he isn't too great, and many others have had better rookie seasons. Julio Rodriguez, Aaron Judge and Mike Trout are some that come to mind in recent history.
@16:54 speaking of umpires you should react to the future changes for 2024. You know how the AFL tested out all these changes the MLB made this year? AFL is currently testing out an Electronic Strike Zone.. aka Robot Umpires!
Elly is not even in the ROTY conversation. Vegas most recent odds don't have him in the top 5 and at no point was he #1 I think. It's interesting how in all the MLB videos you've watched, Elly has been the only rookie ever mentioned lol
So this was a video about the 2023 season and they don't even mention the Atlanta Braves, the best team in baseball. The Braves have had the best year in franchise history. Look at how many franchise records have been broken this year and they don't even merit a mention.
Elly has been fun to watch but he hasn't really been THAT great, like you have to remember you play baseball every single day, and have to be consistent every single day, like Elly might go 2-3 with a home run and a stolen base one game, and then go 0-4 with 3 strikeouts the next, that just baseball
Whiles it’s never unprecedented for a rookie to have a great season. There is usually one or two battling for rookie of the year each season. Some seasons much better than others. However, what is an extreme anomaly is the fact that the reds are doing what they are with 7-9 regular playing rookies. The list is crazy.
Nothing happens to umpires. That's only partially true. They don't get postseason assignments. That's it though. Angel Hernandez and Las Diaz should rightfully be looking for another career.
23:15 They are suscetible to be tagged out anytime while not touching the base. Only the initial approach towards the first base is allowed to overrun as long as you touched the bag. However, when you tried to turn towards second base, you can be tagged out.
That play at 2nd base was definitely an umpire mistake. A fielder can't push a runner off a base. The runner must keep contact with the base at all times unless time is called, which they usually do after the play is over. The umpire called the runner safe but never acknowledged the push off attempt by the fielder. Once the play hits review, they can only review if safe or out while disregarding the push off. Just a mind blowing technicality that needs to be corrected moving forward.
The Boone meltdown on that umpire is probably my favorite thing from this entire season. Astros are actually on top now. Absolutely embarrassed the Rangers this last series.
The White Sox are the worst team in baseball. This was supposed to be the year they competed for the World Series. They're going to lose 100 games. Everyone knew the A's would suck. The A's attendance has increased in 2023. The White Sox have suffered the biggest attendance drop at over 3,000.
Dodgers WAS the primary location for Ohtani but that UCL injury has complicated things. Also, the Angels willingness to trade Trout in the off season complicates things also in that the SF Giants are a main team in on Shohei, but I think they'd be more inclined to trade for Trout who's already under contract. Ohtani goes to LAD or SF. Their bidding war will get out of hand.
Elly De La Cruz is an exciting player whose best moments are truly great. But as an overall player, I think you'd see that there are better, more well-rounded, young players in the game. Julio Rodriguez immediately comes to mind. Or Bobby Witt Jr.
The New Rules, Most $300 Million Dollar Free Agency Players..EVER!,Oh! Ohtani's injury... And! Oakland now has two professional Sports teams..GOING TOO LAS VEGAS! There the 2023 Season in a nutshell. 🥴🥴
Astros looking very good now. Not that I’m any good at Predictions 😂 (Damo), I think if Braves don’t win the WS, I’d think it’s likely it’ll be the Astros
De La Cruz had a great couple weeks start to his career but has fallen off a cliff since. His numbers on the year are pretty bad now. I think he will be an amazing player, just take time to adjust but he has all the tools to be great.
Orioles were expected to be good by 2023-2024 based of a rebuild of their team. People give 3-6 years for rebuilds, depends on how deep their rebuild is. Orioles' rebuild was deep. They had one of the worst minor league depth in the league! Now, it's actually scary how their minor league system was starting last year. It's weakened because they brought up so many of their prospects, but their minor league system is still really, really great! Orioles are proving a good rebuild helps! The Pittsburgh Pirates are following that motto very well! The Cincinnati Reds & Seattle Mariners are kinda going that route.
For context on the absurd overreaction, the O's are owned by a lawyer lol Only good things he's done are help Cal Ripken Jr save his Ironman games streak (through the strike season) and keep Camden Yards pristine
Isn’t this what baseball needed to be watchable again to the avg person? They changed the rules and now they got some drama. What are the ratings? I might watch a game.
The Raiders gave the city of Oakland every opportunity to make good - years and years and years of waiting for a deal to renovate the "mosoleum" and nothing. RN4L
There are more than a dozen rookies better than Elly de la Cruz this season alone; hell, there are 3 or 4 rookies on his own team who have been better. If you only see the hype and highlights, he looks extraordinary, but the reality is he's a deeply flawed player. He's certainly capable of cleaning things up and fulfilling his potential, but he's a long way from that point right now.
De La Cruz makes for great highlights, but overall he's had a pretty bad season. He's got a below .300 On-Base Percentage, and though he's slugged a bit and run well, he's still doing 13% worse than your "average" MLB hitter overall (87 OPS+). The Reds have *also* had a bunch of other rookies who have done legitimately amazingly, including: (1) Matt McLain, who plays all over the infield, is slashing .290/.357/.500, and is playing great defense, (2) outfielder Will Benson, who is slashing .279/.370/.500, and (3) First baseman Spencer Steer who's popped 20 home runs and also slashing .270/.360/.450. And all of these guys are running like the wind; they've each got over a dozen stolen bases on the year. The whole team is playing with sizzle, speed (except for old grumpy man Joey Votto, who's also one of the game's great characters), and panache and it's really cool to watch.
Boys let me tell you something ..as a life-long Yankee fan.. yes I am old ..since 1965 I cannot express strongly enough how upsetting and disappointing and unbearable this yankee team has been this year!!,,,, it has been a complete and utter nightmare!!... I know I speak for many Yankee fans when I say that this year has been exhausting!!!
De La Cruz is actually not playing well, but he did enter the league on fire. He'll be a future star but hes been talked about a bit too much. Hes strikeout percentage is near 40% which is horrendous
21:22 It wasn't a dirty play by Anderson. Nor was the other tag that TA placed on Jose Ramirez dirty. Ramirez hysterically overreacted, grabbed at Anderson's crotch and stuck his finger in his face. Ramirez triggered the fight, not Tim, and Ramirez is the "bad guy" in this incident. Tim had every right to defend himself. MLB got this story wrong as did the media. Unfortunately, TA left his chin exposed. Tim Anderson is the subject of much hatred, some of it racially based, due to misinterpreted comments about Jackie Robinson. There are legit reasons to dislike TA such as lazy throws, lack of concentration and bringing his personal issues to the ballpark. One last thing. Yasmani Grandal told a local radio station that the claim that he slapped teammate Tim Anderson was not true.

What the heck. MLB needs to fix that.

These breakout seasons like ellys happen pretty often. Sometimes they stay good (acuna and Tatis) and sometimes the player sucks after (Aquino)
Now that you've experienced your first season as a Padres fan you can imagine how a lifetime feels lmao, you get numb to the pain
Not nearly as bad as being a Mariners fan. Not even close

Rookies often enter the league strong. Partly due to be called up while in form and partly due to teams not knowing a lot of their weaknesses yet
Really cool to see the two of you enjoying baseball
For a recap there is a deafening silence here on the greatest team in 2023 baseball.
good catch Nick, I was typing mid sentence about Novice/Rookie before you saved Damo from absolute searing embarrassment 🤣
I’ve done him a favour there 😂

The Raiders originally started in Vegas and moved to Oakland.
The runner has to keep contact with the base until the runner asked for timeout.

Love the videos. Been hoping you’d do a Shawn Kemp “Reign Man” video and a Charles Barkley Video.
As an A's fan the ownership made the team unwatchable and then blamed us when we didnt watch the garbage fire
Went to see Tigers vs White Sox yesterday. A few in the crowd was taking the piss when he came to bat. Oh, and the Tigers swept the series.

Is that the lowest difficulty? 🤣
For De la Cruz, his end of season stats probably won't be super special. But the excitement he brings is as good as anyone in a while
Definitely has that excitement factor. Thanks for the comment 🙏
What is happening in Oakland is similar to the plot of "Major League."
I think they made the video too soon because in the time since the video was released the season got even crazier.
Elly De La Cruz is actually well below average hitting this season on the whole. He has been super hot at times and super cold at times.
Post-concussion syndrome is more likely what he has. His orthrostatic dizziness after that tag should have sent bells ringing for the team physician.
O-R-I-O-L-E-S! Go O's! And yeah, the Kevin Brown thing was so stupid. Great team, not great ownership.
Thanks for the context Andrew, seen a few comments similar to this one to be fair!
Seems pretty likely to me that Ohtani ends up with one of the mega-rich teams like the Braves, Yankees, or Dodgers. A lot of the smaller market teams probably feel like they can't commit the kind of dollars that Ohtani is going to want to just a single player.
Yeah I think that’s likely too. Appreciate the comment Steve, thanks 🙏
Not to mention the (potentially) two TJ surgeries. Not worth the risk. Just look at what is happening with Strasburg and the Nats.
If he does go to the Mariners, it'll be because of the Ichiro effect.
The umpire must clearly signal 'time out' for a runner to safely break contact with the bag
It's amazing how one player can make all the difference (Elly), and other players can't (Trout & Shohei).
Elly has been trash, he has not made "all the difference".
Elly will get better with more consistent hitting over time, and his defense minus some stupid errors has been pretty good people just love to hate
Evrery couple years or so some rookie comes in and makes tremendous waves. Aaron Judge for example, hit over 50 homeruns in his rookie year
Nothing happens to umpires. That's only partially true. They don't get postseason assignments. That's it though. Angel Hernandez and Las Diaz should rightfully be looking for another career.
The Umpires Union contract makes doing anything about the sorry umpires almost impossible.
23:15
They are suscetible to be tagged out anytime while not touching the base. Only the initial approach towards the first base is allowed to overrun as long as you touched the bag. However, when you tried to turn towards second base, you can be tagged out.
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but the Golden State Warriors are still in Oakland.
Understandable 😅 Was an epic moment!
He should have been safe at second, you can't force a runner off the base, sometimes you can get away with blocking a bit.
Thanks for confirming, that’s what we thought. Appreciate it 🤝
Elly De La Cruz is an exciting player whose best moments are truly great. But as an overall player, I think you'd see that there are better, more well-rounded, young players in the game. Julio Rodriguez immediately comes to mind. Or Bobby Witt Jr.
you do need to maintain contact with the base to stay safe.
The New Rules, Most $300 Million Dollar Free Agency Players..EVER!,Oh! Ohtani's injury... And! Oakland now has two professional Sports teams..GOING TOO LAS VEGAS! There the 2023 Season in a nutshell. 🥴🥴
Appreciate the info summary 😅
Btw Orioles are 91 and 52 right now... and will likely get Home field for ALL of the post season
The Rangers have been free falling. Seattle got hot but so have the Astros, Houston is in first place as of 9-11-23.
De La Cruz is so fun to watch play 🤘🤘
For real! A really exciting player!
God bless the As fans
Oakland/Las Vegas As is were he's going
Oakland still has the Golden State Warriors in the NBA
It'd be a miracle if Ohtani came to the Phillies in the offseason. I'd go to so many more games then.
Well now the Astros are in first 3 games over Texas GO STROS!!
Elly delacruz puts my last name on the map lol😂that’s why I like him and ion even like baseball
A's SWEPT THE BRAVES!!!
Rick
Charleston SC
Wow! Wow! Wow! 😅
Let me know when they do something that matters
Wasn't it just a 2 game series? As a Braves fan I could care less. That's just baseball.
@@johnwray393
I'm a Braves fan since 1969
You guys seem to have gotten pretty fluid with baseball lingo lmao
For context on the absurd overreaction, the O's are owned by a lawyer lol
Only good things he's done are help Cal Ripken Jr save his Ironman games streak (through the strike season) and keep Camden Yards pristine
Could you watch the bengals vs browns week 1 game highlights please
Corbin carroll has been the best rookie this year despite the attention elly gets
Reverse question, has any team in the Premier gone through similar thing that the As fans are suffering right now?!
I think Ohtani stays on the west coast because he's way closer to home. Dodgers or Mariners are my top two for him.
I AM A PROPHET!
I know I speak for many Yankee fans when I say that this year has been exhausting!!!
oakland also lost the warriors to SF
Do other sports have this much drama? Its like watching Coronation Street/EastEnders/ Days of Our Lives.
De La Cruz is actually not playing well, but he did enter the league on fire. He'll be a future star but hes been talked about a bit too much. Hes strikeout percentage is near 40% which is horrendous
Appreciate the context, thank you 🙏
Baseball is broken. Not because of the umpires, but because there is no salary cap and proper revenue sharing. NFL, NHL are both much better for it.
Elly is young and he has a ton of tools but he has been a below average hitter offensiveoy
elly isnt that good, just gifted physically.
Ella is overrated right now . There is a lot of good players on the team. Hopefully they don’t trade them
I stopped watching baseball once the A's announced their move. I no longer have a team so baseball is dead to me.
