german player then proceeds to get in a bomber and revenge kill the m8 while reeing and listening to erika in his room with iron crosses all over the walls
Yep. The army realized the 37 mm wasn't powerful enough for a tank destroyer. The M8's turret was too small to fit any larger caliber. So it went off to war as an armored car. But a high-velocity 37 mm round in just the right place could still do some damage.
That's the price of moving an expensive piece of armor through enemy terrain without reconnaissance or infantry support. The Waffen SS must have felt really arrogant that day.
My Dad crewed an M8 in France and Germany. BTW, he NEVER called it Greyhound...it was always just M8, to him. I first read this story years ago...when I told my Dad, it was the first time he had heard about it...he said “somebody must have eaten their Wheaties that day” . The version I read had the tank, described as a Tiger, driving on a sunken road, with the M8 high up on the berm shooting downward at the engine cover. Sounds more likely to me, I’d be surprised to see the 37mm penetrate the downward angled rear armor on the King Tiger. Dad had no illusions about the capabilities of the 37mm gun, but he did have good things to say about its use on bunkers and buildings. He also liked the canister load for machine gun positions in the hedgerow country at Falaise Gap. Really, the M8 offered a lot of firepower with its 37mm, it’s 50cal and 30cal machine guns.
The brits were the ones putting names of American tanks, armored cars and tank destroyers. Some of then were only adopted by the Americans after the war.
That close, any High Velocity round can do damage. It might not penetrate, but could cause a spall to break off and maybe bounce around the engine compartment causing a fire. I have never heard of this engagement either in 60 years of WW2 obsession, need more research.

@@benlzicar7628 Actually even if it were a Tiger II the ballistic chart for an M6 cannon using APCBC-T APC M51 Shot is rated at 61mm of hardened armor penetration at 500 yards. Given the three shots were literally fired from point blank range and put all three rounds into a small area. It is possible to over match the 80mm rear armor. Or more plausable they fired through one of the two large exhaust stack resonator covers which are much thinner than the main armored panel and are of a simple casting. I never understood why they would cut large holes in the armor for an exhaust resonator instead of just routing it up and over the top of the armor?
From what I've read there's probably been some embellishment in the story. The rear of the Tiger II tank is protected by 80mm of armour at 60 degrees; the 37mm at best with the M51 Shot would only do 61mm straight on at 500 yards. There's very little chance a M8 could penetrate a Tiger II's rear, unless there was something seriously wrong with the steel in the Tiger II. Furthermore, there's disagreement that there was even a Tiger II in the area on that day; per German records, no Germans divisions within the area were officially equipped with King Tiger's; the original battle report from what I've read indicated that they've only killed a Tiger, and didn't mentioned which type. In fact, the nearest Tiger II were the ones assigned to SS.Pz.-Abt. 501, which was operating with Kampfgruppe Peiper, of the 1st SS-Pz.Div. LSSAH, which was in 6. Panzer-Armee. Their route was far to the north of St. Vith, way out of the way. While it is possible one Tiger II may have gotten separated from the rest of the unit, I don't think it's likely. The only other German division that had Tiger II's in the general vicinity was the s.Pz.-Abt. 506, but that division was down near Bastonge and was no where near St. Vith. However, since battle claims are usually extremely dubious (enemy tanks were frequently mis-identified, and the same battle report also indicated a Ferdinand or an Elephant was also killed, even though none were even in the theater), it could have easily been something less impressive, such as a Panzer III or a Panzer IV. At best, it could have been a Panther, since that looks somewhat similar to a Tiger II, and the rear armour is thin enough that a 37mm could put a shot through. Hell there's even been after-action reports in which American troops have claimed that a bloody StuG was a Tiger... Edit: Furthermore, it was pointed out to me that every single Tiger II lost by the SS.Pz.-Abt. 501 (the closest unit with Tiger II's) was photographed heavily and documented fairly extensively. Pretty much all of the post-battle photos of St. Vith showed Panzer IV's and StuG's.

Also, the accompanying videos are always quite good. Many of the commercial historical channels always seem to run the same stock footage, but yours always fits the story well. Kudos!
Wonder why the Tiger didn’t just turn around? The M8 Boss! OK boys, its Miller time! Dad told me a story about a man on a Grizzly Bear hunt that found some tracks and went trailing one. When later he came to camp and they asked him, where’s the Bear? He replied, I decided to let him go, the Tracks started getting a little too fresh! Thanks Mark! Great as usual!🤔
King Tiger: Oh boy I sure do love being a massive tank that I am not having to worry about American armor at all. Perhaps I will continue down this road to find another target to shoot at. *M8 fires up engine* King Tiger: Wait...what's that sound?
I am a WWII history buff, but I had never heard or read this account before. Thanks for sharing this incredible story of daring audacity in the face of overwhelming odds! These were typical U.S. Cavalry Troopers; I have met a few during my career and they are crazy.
Me neither, let alone have enough energy left to penetrate past the engine and into the fighting compartment! truly an unbelievable moment, the crew of that M8 must've needed a change of trousers.
Yeah considering the rear plate is sloped too 30° and is still 80mm without taking into account effective thickness from the slope. I don't know the pen value of the greyhounds gun ....but I'd say 50mm of my head.... This may very well be one of them propaganda stories.... need a source
After reading reports on the gun ...... There is no way this happened. . If the gun couldn't pen a possible stug at 75 yards no way it kill that tiger. Here is a report of a stug attack "Later in the day, the Germans attempted to retake the hill with one heavy assault gun (est 105mm) and a few infantry men and succeeded in penetrating our position. From 100 yards he knocked out two light tanks. However, the advance of "A" company's tanks concentrated so much fire on him and held their ground so effectively that he lost his nerve and retired from the fight, with his supporting troops, if he had any left. The 37mm gun on the Light Tanks did no appreciable damage to the German self-propelled weapon, although over 100 direct hits were placed on him from ranges varying from 75 to 500 yards." [21]
You wouldn't survive a rank battle. Situational awareness is gold, even if there's armor, if the distance 25 yards as stated and the armor is 30°, if that close with your turret facing down, you're basically aiming at a wall. The back is armor, but not just armor, it has mufflers, and hosing, etc... if the explosion happened in the outside, the shockwave, and some shrapnel and some of the explosion would've pushed it self into the engine compartment, and damaged the engine. Which would either casatrophicaly fail or just die on them. If you're bias, you'll find bias. It's plausible.
The M8 greyhound armored car was Dad's favorite vehicle in ww2. Soldiers actually would have races against each other in those things to entertain themselves and kill time. Sometimes the races could result in deadly wrecks. Most of the duties were usually fairly mundane. They were not heavy fighters, and usually employed against light opposition.
At first the Greyhound was; - “Come on, Go!” Then as they opened fire at the Konig's Tiger; - “Come one! Hit those bastards!” After killing the enemy tank; - “Yahoo, we've earned our stripes!” All those quotes are from the Company of Heroes 2 for the M8 Greyhound, I just saw it befitting for them to be inserted in this instance.
Mark ... i have said it once before but i will say it again! This is by far one of my favorite channels on the tube ... You drop new great stories every day on WW2 which is amazing ... please please please drop a story on some stuff that happened on the Eastern Front some more !!! Some Stalingrad or Bryansk and Vyazma pockets ... please man ! You are the best !
Amazing how many stories are out there of lone tank actions. Ordinarily a tank never operates by itself, but always as part of a tank platoon/troop. There should have been at least two other tigers supporting the first one, using fire and movement tactics (2 tanks assume a hull down position while the other 2 [sometimes just 1] moves forward to the next position from which to support the others in turn). And where there’s a tank platoon, there’s always a tank company/squadron, itself part of a battalion and regiment. This tank sounds like it was lost trying to catch up to its unit, rather than acting as the spearhead of an attack.
Part of a heavy tank battalion was there only because of traffic jam at the main axis of advance of the army-group it actually belonged to and the force tried to find an alternative route. Which can explains a lonely heavy tank as it's just scouting ahead as the heavy tank battalion in this stage of the war apparently only consisted of heavy tanks. As the unit's around it are from another sector coordination would be bad. Also the wooded and hilled terrain made your proposed fire and movement tactics hard to pull off and it would slow the unit further down while it's already behind schedule. War is chaos were textbook procedures and plans are quickly thrown out of the window as they do not match the reality.
@@barthoving2053 Actually no. At the late stages of the war a heavy tank Bn. or Co. would have had a variety of models. Lots of Pz. IVs etc. in adhoc kampfgruppen. And using a (at this stage priceless) heavy tank as a scout wandering around by itself is a good way to lose your heavy tank. Even in the chaos of war stupid is still stupid. It was probably just lost.
It was not the noise of the engine but the sheer cacophony of brass balls knocking around in that M8 that alerted the king tiger commander. No way would I have been ok with my commander saying let's chase after a king tiger. That is some insane levels of courage.
Just goes to show you the mentality of the guys back then. They knew they had a slim chance, but just couldn’t let the tiger continue down the road for someone else to deal with it. I enjoy reading about the one on one battles. thank you for Posting
The M8's 37mm gun could only penetrate about 60mm at closest point blank range which isn't enough to penetrate the sloped rear armor of a Tiger II (which was actually 90mm effective due to the slope). It was either a Pz IV or a Panther which has only 40mm rear armor. The allies often made the common mistake to falsely identify all German tanks as Tigers. I can't blame them, a Pz IV looks very similar to a Tiger, just like a Panther looks very similar to a King Tiger since they had the same shape and size. They are not easy to distinguish from one another. Every German late war tank was either a Tiger or King Tiger for the Americans (look at the Super Pershing myth for example which claimed to have destroyed a King Tiger when there was no active German unit that operatd any King Tigers in that area). It was called the "Tiger phobia". The Americans supposedly destroyed more Tigers than there were produced throughout the whole war. It was much more heroic to have slayed the biggest and baddest cats than just a regular Pz IV.
Wehraboos hero Michael Wittman was a champion of going out alone without infantry support. That worked well in Villiers Bocage were the brits failed to put a infantry screen on their resting tanks. but in Cramesnil it lead his whole Tiger platoon into a ambush. So the story is not as strange as it sounds. Many Tiger commandars were too confident on their mounts. This Tiger probably got lost or was to cocky.
The best part about this video, is reading the comments by the Panzer fans how this simply could "not" have happened. Well... it did. By a 37mm gun and big balls of steel.
Could you imagine the conversation they must of had in that vehicle Allies: Everyone down! KT up ahead! M8 driver: bet you I can outmaneuver that chunky tank M8 gunner: No you cant M8 driver: Wanna bet? M8 gunner: Ok, $50 buxs M8 driver: Hold my beer M8 Gunner: *heart attack *

My father was in the 91st with the 1st Armored Div. Joined them at Salerno and went to the top of the boot. Was wounded at Casino and one of his 3 out of 5 brothers that served in WWII, found him on the beach at Anzio. The brother was in a 4.2" mortar unit with the Rangers. Small war, wasn't it?
The American Army. Making the Impossible Possible since 1776. lol
Super Pershing fails to kill a tiger, m8: hold my spare tire
I'm surprised the crew in the tiger didn't hear the sound of those massive clanking balls coming down the road.
"It's not the size that matters, it's how you use it that counts."
I am impressed by your presentations. They get right to the story, but are never boring or simply factual. You present just the right amount of information. Also, the accompanying videos are always quite good. Many of the commercial historical channels always seem to run the same stock footage, but yours always fits the story well. Kudos!
A great many thanks
Can you imagine the Tiger crew trying to explain what killed their tank to other German POW's. Well, this armored car came up behind us...
The guy commanding that M8 had epic balls.
I think the guys in the M8 were fighting for their lives. "If we don’t knock out that Tiger, it’s going to kill us".
U.S army: M8, nothing can stop that king tiger
M8: Hold my beer
Wonder why the Tiger didn’t just turn around? The M8 Boss! OK boys, its Miller time! Dad told me a story about a man on a Grizzly Bear hunt that found some tracks and went trailing one. When later he came to camp and they asked him, where’s the Bear? He replied, I decided to let him go, the Tracks started getting a little too fresh! Thanks Mark! Great as usual!🤔
2:50 I’m sure that engine sounded like a guy yelling, “LEEEROOOOY JENKINS!!!”
Who would win?
The most armored heavy tank of WW2
Or
An absolute mad lad
King Tiger: Oh boy I sure do love being a massive tank that I am not having to worry about American armor at all. Perhaps I will continue down this road to find another target to shoot at.
*M8 fires up engine*
King Tiger: Wait...what's that sound?
Even reading the Title, in my best python .
"Run Awayyyyy"
Came to mind.
LOL
that scene of the holy grail was funny af
I am a WWII history buff, but I had never heard or read this account before. Thanks for sharing this incredible story of daring audacity in the face of overwhelming odds! These were typical U.S. Cavalry Troopers; I have met a few during my career and they are crazy.
I find your Channel a treasure trove of obscure but interesting WWII facts, and much more!

"...and the award for 'Big Steel Ones with Valor' goes to..."
Real question is how did the M8 crew operate so well with such massive balls ? Wouldn't they get in the way ?
imagine the smug ass look that crew had when they rolled back to their starting position.
so near the end of the war hitler was demanding bigger tanks, the allies where demanding crews with balls of steel
My hat is off to the brave m_8 crew. That took some balls to do what they did.
The crew commander had massive balls of solid adamantium. I’m surprised they fit in the turret. ;-))
That thing is adorable compared to the glorious tiger
Never heard of this engagement, thanks. Though I wouldn't think a 37mm would penetrate any part of a King Tiger.
Nearly all of Germany's heavy tanks were destroyed in the war, and nearly none of the allies' guns were capable of destroying them. On paper.
After reading reports on the gun ...... There is no way this happened. . If the gun couldn't pen a possible stug at 75 yards no way it kill that tiger. Here is a report of a stug attack
"Later in the day, the Germans attempted to retake the hill with one heavy assault gun (est 105mm) and a few infantry men and succeeded in penetrating our position.
Three rounds before the turret could even traverse 180 degrees. That took some stones to engage the tiger and win.
"Not go after a King Tiger? Are you kidding me? Here. Hold my beer."
--M8 Armored Car Commander
In this case, it doesn't matter whose bigger and stronger it matters whose smarter
At first the Greyhound was;
- “Come on, Go!”
Then as they opened fire at the Konig's Tiger;
- “Come one! Hit those bastards!”
After killing the enemy tank;
- “Yahoo, we've earned our stripes!”
All those quotes are from the Company of Heroes 2 for the M8 Greyhound, I just saw it befitting for them to be inserted in this instance.
Love the comments all of these people arguing over the possibility based on paper stats or gaming parameters.
King tiger : passes by
M8 Greyhound : Swaggity Swooty I'm coming for that booty.
The german commander must have wondered
"What sounds like two metal spheres banging together?" Before looking behind him
Truly gutsy and amazing that the king Tiger got knocked out so easily.... bigger is not always better.
Mark ... i have said it once before but i will say it again! This is by far one of my favorite channels on the tube ... What a story!
Thanks Mark

Lemme fix that for ya
Hahaha, what a story, Mark
Amazing how many stories are out there of lone tank actions. Ordinarily a tank never operates by itself, but always as part of a tank platoon/troop. There should have been at least two other tigers supporting the first one, using fire and movement tactics (2 tanks assume a hull down position while the other 2 [sometimes just 1] moves forward to the next position from which to support the others in turn). And where there’s a tank platoon, there’s always a tank company/squadron, itself part of a battalion and regiment. This tank sounds like it was lost trying to catch up to its unit, rather than acting as the spearhead of an attack.
Just what I was thinking
It was probably just lost.
the M8 was a recon. scout car. they didn't have a brass band with them.
Next up:
*M2 Light vs. Maus*
It was not the noise of the engine but the sheer cacophony of brass balls knocking around in that M8 that alerted the king tiger commander. No way would I have been ok with my commander saying let's chase after a king tiger. That is some insane levels of courage.
Those guys deserved the Medal of Honor. I don't know how the vehicle moved with the weight of the crew's balls.
Its amazing the the m8 didn’t get weighed down by the commanders balls.
This engagement is the meaning of Courage, Well done Lads, Well Done!!
Size doesn’t matter...it’s how you use it! 😂🤣
That was a true David and Goliath battle if I ever heard one. Amazing 🇺🇸
Just goes to show you the mentality of the guys back then. They knew they had a slim chance, but just couldn’t let the tiger continue down the road for someone else to deal with it. I enjoy reading about the one on one battles. thank you for
Posting
Who would win
The largest most advanced 70 ton German tank
Or...
One smoll armored boi
When I read the title I thought it was a joke. Amazing!!
Great story and footage mark. Thank you again.

Using a Tiger without any support makes it vulnerable - and a shots in the rear did the fatal damage - a big loss to the Germans - great videos
your 180mm kruppstahl armor doesn't even match the crew's steel balls
Job done 👍. I hope those guys got at least a Silver or Bronze Star. Also how silly was the King Tiger crew, no infantry support!
The only question I have is, how the hell could that M8 move quickly enough when it had to carry those massive cast iron balls of the crew???
The best part about this video, is reading the comments by the Panzer fans how this simply could "not" have happened. Well... it did. By a 37mm gun and big balls of steel.
One of the many amazing stories from the master himself.
US Commander- We cant penetrate the King Tiger with use of Sherman
Grey hound commander : I'll do it.
What would I do without you Mark thank you so much for your work
They crew of the king tiger survived and ran away but if i was them i would have been really mad
Yeah I would have swore and yelled angrily all the way on foot to Berlin
Could you imagine the conversation they must of had in that vehicle
Allies: Everyone down! KT up ahead!
M8 driver: bet you I can outmaneuver that chunky tank
M8 gunner: No you cant
M8 driver: Wanna bet?
M8 gunner: Ok, $50 buxs
M8 driver: Hold my beer
M8 Gunner: *heart attack *
