Unless something is being gifted, the items I use do not go back into their original cartons. I place the item if not being used regularly, along with all its cords/cables/documents/and accessories into a 2.5 gallon clear zip lock food storage bag, along with the original packaging/box that has been made flat. And if within the warranty/extended warranty period, a photocopy of the otiginal receipt gets put in there, too. Orig. receipts are often printed on thermal paper and fade to invisible very quickly especially if exposed to light. The zip lock bags usually have a place on the outside to label the contents.

This is great! Though personally, I've never caught on to using ziplocks, I think it's a perfectly good option for storage. Sounds like you do it enough too that there's a nice uniformity across the house. Thanks for sharing!

I have the same issue with clothing that need alterations. I hate doing that errand and the pile sits there in the same spot on a small table or in a shopping bag on the floor. I finally made myself do it two weeks ago, and now I have another new pile started. The problem isn't so much clutter as it is INDECISION. What to do with each item......

Kirk, this is a GOOD one! I drape over my loft bedroom railing things for hand-mending or tailoring at the dry cleaners. They have been known to sit here for well over 2 weeks... Yes, indecision is at the heart of it all.

What's your take on decorative sofa cushions and bed pillows. Seems like our decorative bed pillows are almost always off to the side and rarely actually used. Am I the only one not interested in taking them off and putting them back on daily?

I love this question, and I'm on Team Don! I'm officially opposed to superfluous pillows. My sister and I debate on this topic often. I have two extra square pillows on my couch, but we use them to prop ourselves when working or watching TV. Only recently did I add two "decorative" pillows to my bed. There are the two for sleeping, then the two with linen shams that match the duvet. They really do help the bed to look finished, thus, I make it daily now. Also, I use one of these extras when reading in bed. That's it though. The layered pillow look seems fussy to me, like they're high maintenance dust traps! It can be beautiful, but I prefer simple, simple, simple!

Did you ever get the cord into the box?

Ha ha. NO! It's in a cord drawer now labeled "Yeti mic." What a mystery...

I have a kind of similar problem... a little more mess btw😬... I made an open spot in my bedroom.. where after I buy things or after shopping... I put it there ... until I start taking out to use them.. which might be .. forever... b by the tym I do... new shopping bag/ packets starts to pile up😔
Its because... I don’t want to go through the whole process... to make space for my new stuff or purge .. in my closet or kitchen cabinet( if it’s something for the kitchen) I put it off... as long as I can .
To avoid to organize n make space for new stuff... ( wch I know , I will do it once I start).... i m creating a different clutter out on my floor ... on 1 corner. I have never seem to see the space empty... I don’t know how to get better at this. Once I do, i again start the samecycle😔😔

Nazneen, have you watched my "One thing in, one thing out" video? I think this could help. I'd suggest making a deal with yourself that within 24 hours of buying something, you discard at least one similar item. We do this. It feels like the natural rhythm to things. It's truly the only way to keep balance at home. I hope that helps!

Nazneen, I've use to be this way too until i read somewhere that we should "Welcome Home" our new things even if we don't yet have a specific place in mind where we will put it. I've been doing this ever since and places to put the things just seem to easily open up now. Pull everything out of the shopping bags & then discard the bags, remove all store labels & tags from your items, if possible wash the item & tell it Welcome Home, and then it becomes a part of you ..

Brianna V.B. I've never heard that before but love it! Reminds me of the KonMari declutter method where you're supposed to tell your things a proper goodbye before disposing/ donating /recycling them. You thank the item for whatever small or large influence they had on your life, and it makes the letting go process easier.
