There really is something extra spooky about turning around and seeing a giant decaying man quietly knelt down behind you and *just looking at you.* I don't get got by jump scares that much, but damn that gotted me good.

Even without the supernatural aspects this game is TERRIFYING just the idea of walking around a messy apartment at night with the light's off and knowing there is SOMEONE else in there with you that you can't see is way to freaky for me to handle.
One of the brilliant things this game does is avoid killing the player. The initial fear of dying is what motivates the player not to get caught by the monster, but after going through it over and over, you eventually stop being scared. Constantly waiting for something to *eventually* happen to you but never actually fulfilling that fearful anticipation keeps you edge throughout the experience, instead of constantly having the game’s tension interrupted by a repetitive jumpscare after making a mistake. It also forces the player to have to be completely immersed in the dark during certain segments, keeping you from using the light to become comfortable with the environment. I love this game just watching Mark play it.
i'm months late on this, but what if the game gives it a scripted event where it kill you, you get a fake respawn, and the thing never kills you again?
The only problem is when games follow this formula but are too long because then the tension goes knowing you'll never actually be killed. The best thing a game can do is make the player believe they can die while never actually killing them
I love how cramped it all is. The doors open in your way and you have to turn these hard corners...feels very claustrophic, it's super cool contrast from most horror games with the long hallways
Its the most agonizing part for me cuz unlike other games its a pretty small space even if you can run it wont get yoy far from whatever is in there with you And the light going out all the time with the close noises just adds to the stress
Reminds me of At Dead of Night keeping my stress level high with the door-closing animation - it takes so long, and I was always expecting Jimmy to be there when the MC turns around
usually these "can't fight, must hide/run" horror games are pretty simple and don't really entice me cause they're almost all the same, but this was superfucking tense and legit scary, great job m'dev
They're definitely the type that freak me out the most whilst playing them, like with cod zombies, the forest, dying light, they scared the shit out of me when I first played them or came across difficult enemies in them, but it kinda wears off when you either level up or learn the best way to kill them. While in run/hide games, you can't get rid of the threat. Thought think my personal favourite games are the ones where you have to interact with or get close to the horrifying part/threat to progress, like little nightmares, fran bow or limbo
This was a really polished experience, dang. There were moments where your reflection disappeared and that messed with me so much. Huge credit to the developers
The one and only complaint I have is that they didn’t start you with a small key only labeled “64” just for us folks who noticed you start right next to the mailbox. Personally I got upset that mark didn’t notice or ever check the damn thing, as it was my first instinct. Especially having dealt with deceased loved ones and knowing that’s part of the ordeal. But I think it would be cool if the devs put in a small Easter egg or lore in the mailbox.
This was actually scary to watch I can’t imagine how scary it would be to play, when you turned around and the monster thing was there I silently screamed
Usually when I see a jumpscare I'll flinch back or get shivers down my spine, but when that thing showed up I went into complete shock and just stared. Now THAT was a good jumpscare.
This was terrifying to watch and beautifully made, holy shit. Usually Mark's humor deflates the horror aspect a bit, but in this one it made it worse for me. It felt like Mark was actually scared and I think he realized at around 13:10 that this game was going to really test his ability to make light of horror. I love it.
I think it’s the fact that it’s established that anything you do can be reversed and ultimately you have no power. Even your lights aren’t safe and they can be turned off at any time.
That was one of the most effective jumpscares iv ever seen while still being tasteful, no sudden movement, no loud noise, no screaming in your face then scampering away. Just a horrible eerie shock to seeing this monster inches from your face doing absolutely nothing, perfectly baited by the sound of a baby crying.
I love how mark just keeps seeing the guy, and just tries to bum rush him at every chance. I would also be afraid if I saw Mark in my house trying to square up.
As a Slav - god damn this apartment looks so much like my granmother's house. Really gives off the vibes of the style that was really popular during the late 20th century. It only adds to the scary factor for me - it's the familiarity of it all, I think.
Well yeah, because it's clearly a хрущёвка, maaaaaybe a брежневкa (since they are generally taller). They are still the majority of housing in FSU countries, and especially in Russia. Although more are being demolished every year because they are an expensive nightmare to try and renovate as they continue to crumble away. So you have the copy-paste room layout, plus then all the standard Russian cultural touches (Covers/rugs on the wall, the sitting room with the big wall-cabinet, separate toilet from bath, that plastic tablecloth in the kitchen, the wallpaper choices, etc.) What was missing was rolls of extra linoleum or wallpaper in the storage closet/toilet cubicle, and definitely missing a balcony with an old refrigerator on it. These things are getting less common with those people born in the 90s now becoming apartment owners/adults, but it's still a huge part of the soviet legacy to have this exact apartment set up and mentality in anyone over the age of 40.
Oh, also I should add that I agree with you 100%. The familiarity definitely added another layer to the spooks. I could actually feel myself there, and next time I go to Russia, you can bet I won't be in one of those apartments with the lights out, haha.
this apartment looks almost exactly like my grandparents'. they’re long dead, so it’s not only the familiarity that makes this game scarier for me but the uneasiness of wandering on the dead's land
How much of the wall rugs is cultural vs. practical? I've heard from Russian colleagues and other places that they mostly came about because insulation was non-existent and the thin walls let sound through, putting thick rugs on the walls helped with both.

Except this isn’t really accurate; one of the scripted events is him crushing the light bulbs in the hall so they won’t work anymore, so he is actively antagonizing the player
10:10-10:16 : “My objective, DIVE OUT THE WIND- oh there’s bars, they literally thought of everything.” The sheer fact that the devs knew someone would try makes me laugh. Edit: If you look around the video, before everything changes, you’ll see that the windows all had no bars until everything went south.
Actually, if the ingame apartment is on the 2nd and 1st floor, it is sort of normal in real life. Everything tells me that the apartment is like an old post-soviet one. As in, made in USSR. And after 1991, due to an increase in crimes, the lower floor windows were usually barred. By thinner bars though

The soviet apartment that CAN still easily cach fires is a Stalinka apartment (which actually explains why the germans wanted to set Leningrad on fire with bombs, but the buildings' bases were covered in some sort of protection against it in time), made in the 30s. Compared to a Khruschevka from the 50s-60s, it is bigger and has a higher ceiling. However part of its construction is made out of wood and its wiring is less than ideal. i am unsure if these are even still used, since the wood tends to, you know, be more fragile than iron and concrete

I swear those old post-soviet flats are creepy even without additional monsters. The light is flickering (usually there's electricity issues), old wooden floors are deforming soundly, the wind is howling and the cupboards drawers are self-opening (again, old loose furniture and uneven floors). Don't forget the sound of ticking clocks and waterdrops on the sink if you did not close the tap really well... My grandparents had a similar apartment, it was creepy even after the renovation. Also, it was on the ground floor so you can hear sounds of the pipes from the basement if you are sleeping next to the wall. I still have nightmares about it sometimes, and granny's like "ah, just don't be afraid of any paranormal stuff and it'll go away. be afraid of the living ones only" 😶
It was really really cool how they added in hints when players got stuck as part of the experience. Like telling you to listen during the doors section, and how the mechanic worked.
I watched this in the middle of the night in the dark (NOT in bed and on a phone) and it was only slightly unsettling. - It takes quite something for me to feel really unsettled, and usually that means also playing myself in the same setting, with the doors unlocked.
The scare at 23:20 literally made me involuntarily close my eyes knock my phone off my bed and hide. It got me worse then anything else has ever gotten me before.
YES people make fun of me and judge me for my fear of the dark. i get asked “why are you so scared?” and get told “There’s nothing there, nothing changes in the darkness” all the time. this game perfectly showcases that fear.

Mark is like the only RUclipsr I can watch play horror. He's just so chill but also so not, and it's so hilarious. I adore the somehow still composed alarmed squeak he makes, and then the "no thank you". His instinct to just run _towards_ the nightmare spookums, his totally calm "oh, that's terrible." "Oh, that's worse." I don't know how this man is so delightful, but by golly he makes my day

When it was just right in front of him when he turned around was probably the scariest thing that happened in this video. That's one of the creepiest things that can happen to someone. Turning around and there's someone right behind you that wasn't there before. Excellent way to induce terror in a horror game. It's very impressive.

Holy shit this was REALLY well made. My favorite thing is that it doesn't use sounds to "jumpscare" you, is lets you notice things and that's what "jumpscares" you.
As an old-school fan of Mark's, I can confirm it's been years since I've seen him this scared. It reminds me a lot of how he would act while playing Outlast or even the original FNAF games, just reduced to yelling and repeating phrases over and over. And for good reason, this game is incredibly well made and nails that sense of helplessness. The fact that it tells you to run and hide, but you're in a tiny apartment with nowhere to run or hide, is extremely unnerving. One of the best short story horror games I've seen in a long time.

Random fact for 22:18 ! That photo was most likely not edited as back then parents would want picture of only their babies. But since photos back then took a while to process and trying to make a baby sit still is difficult they would have the baby sit on their mothers lap to help them stay still. But since the parents wanted photos of only their babies the mothers would wear a bag or mask to hide their faces, terrifying right?
This was such a horrifying experience, cause the game really taps into that primal fear of, turning the lights off and smth being there, it's just amazing.
The way the turn-around scare, where you’re looking around in the closet and then turn to see Grandpa, just happens, no audio que, no jump, he’s just there… God, it’s horrifying.
New theory: We never actually see Lixians legs in these videos. He only ever shows his top half from off screen. So what if this whole time Lixian has been dead, and the Lixian that we have been seeing is just a puppet, controlled off screen by Lunky? Pretty spooky if true.

psychological horror games will always be my favorite, i love the way developers can scare you without jumpscares, just the images or the suspense of something like that just sends chills up your spine instead of just abrupt noises
Yea tbh you’re right. If one man owns 64 apartments and has no employees. He’s a slumlord. A real apartment building landlord has a basic maintenance man on from morning till late evening with a starting pay of 13 dollars when at work but not working but when on the job get 17 an hour. The landlord should also answer calls when he is called at appropriate times such as 10 am till 7 pm when it comes to answering basic questions and basic things. The land lord as well as the maintenance man should be on call 24 hours for absolute emergencies

This was a really polished experience, dang. There were moments where your reflection disappeared and that messed with me so much. Huge credit to the developers
The one and only complaint I have is that they didn’t start you with a small key only labeled “64” just for us folks who noticed you start right next to the mailbox. Personally I got upset that mark didn’t notice or ever check the damn thing, as it was my first instinct. Especially having dealt with deceased loved ones and knowing that’s part of the ordeal. But I think it would be cool if the devs put in a small Easter egg or lore in the mailbox.

This was terrifying to watch and beautifully made, holy shit. Usually Mark's humor deflates the horror aspect a bit, but in this one it made it worse for me. It felt like Mark was actually scared and I think he realized at around 13:10 that this game was going to really test his ability to make light of horror. I love it.
I think it’s the fact that it’s established that anything you do can be reversed and ultimately you have no power. Even your lights aren’t safe and they can be turned off at any time.

That was one of the most effective jumpscares iv ever seen while still being tasteful, no sudden movement, no loud noise, no screaming in your face then scampering away. Just a horrible eerie shock to seeing this monster inches from your face doing absolutely nothing, perfectly baited by the sound of a baby crying.

As a Slav - god damn this apartment looks so much like my granmother's house. Really gives off the vibes of the style that was really popular during the late 20th century. It only adds to the scary factor for me - it's the familiarity of it all, I think.
Well yeah, because it's clearly a хрущёвка, maaaaaybe a брежневкa (since they are generally taller). They are still the majority of housing in FSU countries, and especially in Russia. Although more are being demolished every year because they are an expensive nightmare to try and renovate as they continue to crumble away. So you have the copy-paste room layout, plus then all the standard Russian cultural touches (Covers/rugs on the wall, the sitting room with the big wall-cabinet, separate toilet from bath, that plastic tablecloth in the kitchen, the wallpaper choices, etc.) What was missing was rolls of extra linoleum or wallpaper in the storage closet/toilet cubicle, and definitely missing a balcony with an old refrigerator on it.
These things are getting less common with those people born in the 90s now becoming apartment owners/adults, but it's still a huge part of the soviet legacy to have this exact apartment set up and mentality in anyone over the age of 40.
Oh, also I should add that I agree with you 100%. The familiarity definitely added another layer to the spooks. I could actually feel myself there, and next time I go to Russia, you can bet I won't be in one of those apartments with the lights out, haha.
Yep, all the little stuff around and the way the rugs look (especially the one on the wall) I'm sure all other slavs could tell right away lol
this apartment looks almost exactly like my grandparents'. they’re long dead, so it’s not only the familiarity that makes this game scarier for me but the uneasiness of wandering on the dead's land
How much of the wall rugs is cultural vs. practical? I've heard from Russian colleagues and other places that they mostly came about because insulation was non-existent and the thin walls let sound through, putting thick rugs on the walls helped with both.

I saw someone say in Jack's playthrough of this that if you pay attention, the big guy is actually trying to help you, he's the one who gives you clues, tells you to get out, and is never really aggressive towards you. The doll is the evil thing, Locking the doors and blowing out the lights

Actually, if the ingame apartment is on the 2nd and 1st floor, it is sort of normal in real life. Everything tells me that the apartment is like an old post-soviet one. As in, made in USSR. And after 1991, due to an increase in crimes, the lower floor windows were usually barred. By thinner bars though

The soviet apartment that CAN still easily cach fires is a Stalinka apartment (which actually explains why the germans wanted to set Leningrad on fire with bombs, but the buildings' bases were covered in some sort of protection against it in time), made in the 30s. Compared to a Khruschevka from the 50s-60s, it is bigger and has a higher ceiling. However part of its construction is made out of wood and its wiring is less than ideal. i am unsure if these are even still used, since the wood tends to, you know, be more fragile than iron and concrete

I swear those old post-soviet flats are creepy even without additional monsters. The light is flickering (usually there's electricity issues), old wooden floors are deforming soundly, the wind is howling and the cupboards drawers are self-opening (again, old loose furniture and uneven floors). Don't forget the sound of ticking clocks and waterdrops on the sink if you did not close the tap really well... My grandparents had a similar apartment, it was creepy even after the renovation. Also, it was on the ground floor so you can hear sounds of the pipes from the basement if you are sleeping next to the wall. I still have nightmares about it sometimes, and granny's like "ah, just don't be afraid of any paranormal stuff and it'll go away. be afraid of the living ones only" 😶
It was really really cool how they added in hints when players got stuck as part of the experience. Like telling you to listen during the doors section, and how the mechanic worked.

I adore the somehow still composed alarmed squeak he makes, and then the "no thank you". His instinct to just run _towards_ the nightmare spookums, his totally calm "oh, that's terrible." "Oh, that's worse." I don't know how this man is so delightful, but by golly he makes my day

When it was just right in front of him when he turned around was probably the scariest thing that happened in this video. That's one of the creepiest things that can happen to someone. Turning around and there's someone right behind you that wasn't there before. Excellent way to induce terror in a horror game. It's very impressive.

As an old-school fan of Mark's, I can confirm it's been years since I've seen him this scared. It reminds me a lot of how he would act while playing Outlast or even the original FNAF games, just reduced to yelling and repeating phrases over and over. And for good reason, this game is incredibly well made and nails that sense of helplessness. The fact that it tells you to run and hide, but you're in a tiny apartment with nowhere to run or hide, is extremely unnerving. One of the best short story horror games I've seen in a long time.

Random fact for 22:18 ! That photo was most likely not edited as back then parents would want picture of only their babies. But since photos back then took a while to process and trying to make a baby sit still is difficult they would have the baby sit on their mothers lap to help them stay still. But since the parents wanted photos of only their babies the mothers would wear a bag or mask to hide their faces, terrifying right?

A real apartment building landlord has a basic maintenance man on from morning till late evening with a starting pay of 13 dollars when at work but not working but when on the job get 17 an hour. The landlord should also answer calls when he is called at appropriate times such as 10 am till 7 pm when it comes to answering basic questions and basic things. The land lord as well as the maintenance man should be on call 24 hours for absolute emergencies
