Yes. Agreed. Nobody really talked to the mother in an empathetic manner it seems. It was all about pushing this and not at all about bridging a MASSIVE divide in their discourse.

She believed the baby was a miracle and that God wouldn't give her that miracle and then take it away, so she wouldn't believe that she would die. Also after trying for 12 years she wouldn't be expecting a second 'miracle'

I have never seen a Medical student ever go against their superior like this. This behavior would ultimately jeopardize her career.

right! maybe she has a big ego since she is a MIT grad..
She hasn't been seen in the last 2 seasons with no explanation. Maybe it was to do with this? However when she did get Dr Charles to help a boy in a different episode and I actually liked her. It's a shame she didn't continue to learn from Dr Charles.

To be fair, it was a perfectly reasonable question to ask, and I'm surprised the other doctors didn't ask it already. What if she passes out and the fetus dies. They should know her wishes in that very possible event.

You do know that she’s supposed to represent a neurodivergent character who can only rationalize and can’t be emote on the same level as an average person, right? That’s literally the point of her character in the show… Plus it is a literal show… If you watch the show, you will see that she actually gets help and learning how to help people properly
As a medical student, my jaw fell open watching the attitude the med student gave this doctor. In real life if a med student spoke to a doctor like that, she’d fail her rotation 😂

@@minglifeng2862 I work in healthcare. That IS a medical fact. Patients are allowed to refuse life-saving surgery. Whether it’s due to religious beliefs, moral beliefs, or lifestyle choices, that’s their right and forcing them into a surgery they don’t consent to is a crime unless they’re under a psych order and deemed unable to make their own choices (for example someone who has depression and is actively suicidal might not have as much choice as someone who does not want a life-saving procedure because it goes against their religious beliefs).

I had an ectopic pregnancy, a very wanted pregnancy. The hardest thing was having to walk through a crowd of anti abortionists screaming obscenities at me for the life saving surgery
Did they know you would die without it? I have yet to meet an anti-abortion person who would prefer both mother and child die instead of just the child.
@@robosuit I’ve met plenty. My mother had to have an abortion because she had complications with her pregnancy and it was either her or the baby, possibly both of them would have died either way. Her friends that were anti-abortion berated her and then never talked to her again because they believed she should have stuck with the pregnancy and died, and just let the father raise the baby. I have met a lot who would prefer the mother to live, but I’ve also met a lot who literally do not care

An ectopic pregnancy has to be surgically removed in an operating room in a hospital and the procedure is nothing even remotely like an abortion, it's a very serious operation and no abortion clinic could ever do the procedure. I'm not trying to be mean to Time & Spoons, I'm not a bully but I am an honest person and I experienced an Etopic Pregnancy myself so I know you are correct, there is just no way this is true and I have to say it because all these people giving sympathy for something that is impossible.
Doc Charles needs a show of his own. I kind of dont understand why hes not the main character. He is the most interesting one, has the most depth AND he`s the is a solid OG actor who can carry a show.

The only issue is as doctor charles explained, they can't prove it. so legally they can't be charged but morally both the doctor and patient knows what they did was wrong.

I love dr. Charles explanation why they cant force her into surgery despite their own belief and knowledge of the medicine. Its also why we should normalize talking about death. Maybe if you tell the patient death is what is going to happen not might theyd listen more.

Not all doctors are like that.
It's very unlikely for the doctors to call the embryo a "baby", specially when it's ectopic. That only encourages a reluctant patient to hold on to an unviable process.
Acknowledging the loss is recommended during a miscarriage.
@@arianebolt1575 an ectopic pregnancy isn't considered a miscarriage. At least that's what my friend's doctor told her when she lost one of her fallopian tubes because of it.
An embryo is considered a fetus at 8wks of development. At that stage a doctor would call it a baby because the patient was 13wks. I have been pregnant 4 times n my embryos/fetuses have always been referred to as a baby, even in the earlier weeks when I had emergency trips to the ER.
Not true. It’s a loss and to talk callously as if it were never a soul isn’t a strategy. I’m speaking as someone who works at a children’s hospital.

It's not about playing god, it's about forcing ANY belief on someone. The option of termination should be everyone's right to choose. If a woman doesn't want to risk her life, she shouldn't have to. If a woman does want to risk her life, we shouldn't stop her. It's that simple. Forcing someone to carry a pregnancy is just as bad as forcing a termination.

The patient was demonstrably suicidal, she would have been adjudicated as deficient and she'd have had that procedure done anyway. Episode is a bit contrived in that they said she wasn't crazy.
No matter how much you want to save a patient's life, it is their own choice to accept or to deny. Working in the medical field is extremely complex and not a one decision deal.
Then why do people get 5150d without their consent? I truly don’t understand this logic and need someone to explain.
Yet in certain countries/states you'll be forced to a psych ward and charged with a crime if you try to commit suicide.

@@sarcasticallyrearranged you would have to let me where you got that from. So far in the u.s I haven't found any reliable information of that being the case. As for other countries I know China is a specific country that doesn't really respect your rights in that situation however the country is starting to change that especially since people have this rights in quite a few developed countries.

Maybe so, for some people. But this woman obviously decided that the risk of her own death was preferable to the agony of trying to get pregnant again. No one had the right to take that decision from her. No one had the right to force their own medical decision on her. People have the right to choose when and for what reason they die.

As a first year nursing student (in Australia though) we’ve already had classes on this sort of thing! Theres no way a student dr should get this far and not understanding what dr charles is talking about. Yes I know its a show, but you’d be surprised how much this stuff happens irl

I think that she did understand, but her feelings probably got in the way. She probably felt bad for the patient and really wanted to save her life regardless of what her beliefs were. She made a mistake of getting her feelings in the way instead of doing what's right.
She has no interest in becoming a practicing doctor. She is going to into medical research and development. She said as much in the episode. She went to MIT, a school more known for engineering than medicine. Yale medical and Harvard law complete the New England trifecta!

That attitude she had toward that couple, saying "Even though it may seem like a miracle things can still go wrong", it's not what she said, it's HOW she said it. Dr. Manning was put off by it, you could see it on her face. Also, the parents aren't medical experts, and they come to the hospital to find out what is going on with their baby, not to get a lecture.

Most basic rule of Chicago Med: Don't argue with Dr Charles
As someone who has experienced a tubal burst due to an ectopic pregnancy, I would not wish that kind of pain on anyone, its one of the most painful and heartbreaking experiences I have ever had...

What's great about this show is how much it focuses on the emotional side of being a doctor. A lot of shows like to up ratings by inserting relationships or making the answer to the solution super abstract. But making decisions like this with moral implications is fascinating to watch with the right cast.
Plus almost every episode is built off of a real case, so it adds a sense of real life expectations and weight

Ectopic pregnancy is pretty straight forward to explain to a patient. Just a tank of empathy and sympathy while explaining to the couple. Majority of the patients just need full compassion from their doctors and healthcare attendants when needing to face a difficult time/news.

These are the same types of people who won’t use selective reduction to try to make a high order multiple pregnancy more viable because they won’t “play god,” even though they had no problem “playing god” using fertility treatments to conceive.

It's amazing how Dr Charles' actor can play a sweetheart and a badass and have both completely align with their character
In some ways I found him the most interesting character in this vid. You think at first he is gonna be way too gentle to really take her down a peg but then he said “not on my watch” 🔥

This episode is a pretty good representation of how abortion should be handled. If you consent to abortion in order to save you life, you're okay. If you want to risk it, whether it's based on religion or fertility issues or both, you are free to do so. And whenever we talk about it, we have to talk with EMPATHY. We have to listen to their struggles and imagine ourselves in their position. The situation is scary enough, you have to be gentle but clear, you have to be kind and tactful. Forcing someone to keep their pregnancy is just as bad as forcing them to terminate. The blond doctor is a great example of why we should respect beliefs, because you can explain what's happening to her body without calling out their beliefs in the process. It's probably a good idea to research their religion if youre not familiar with it in order to spin it in a more comforting way, let them know you made an effort to understand and are giving them the options that can align with their morals. Soften the pain they experience.
Edit: Yall. Definition of abortion: the removal of A fetus and placenta. It doesn't matter if it's a viable pregnancy or doomed to fail, it's still an abortion. Ectopic pregnancies are one of the reasons people get the procedure. Don't be like the lady who said if that 10 year old got an abortion, then it's not an abortion. You can't just change the definition of a word. It's still AN ABORTION.
Agree wholeheartedly, personally I wouldn't have an abortion but I respect the free will of others to do so; on the flip side I also expect others to respect the wishes of those who wish to keep a pregnancy even if it doesn't seem viable...

An ectopic pregnancy is in no way viable. In no cases can you just remove it and replant it somewhere else. The placenta is too complex to do that.
These sort of "pregnancies" cause death in the mother 100% of the time if not removed. It is 100% not viable.
I see no reason to respect someone's "religious beliefs" if those beliefs will endanger their very lives.
In a more realistic setting, I think you'd find that several hospital staff would have found some things to lie about in order to save the idiot woman....and they would all have been perfectly fine in doing so. They would not have told her about the heartbeat afterwards. That's actually just beyond cruel, and totally unnecessary.

Ensure Justice for all lives involved. No one should be able to conceive unless authorized to. If this is not enacted then don't fall on the women to bear the burden.

Having experienced it for myself, I would never wish an ectopic pregnancy on anyone. It was one of the most physically painful experiences in my life. Yes, I was very depressed that I had a baby and lost it but also understood that the baby never would have survived in the first place.
I cannot believe she was continually let back into that patient's room... I 100% agree with her on everything but how she handled it. If I were that patient, I would have told them never to let that woman in my room again after that second confrontation

the clouds, and a state trooper calls down to him through a megaphone.
"Grab the ladder, Preacher. This is your last chance."
Once again, the preacher insists the Lord will deliver him.
And, predictably, he drowns.
A pious man, the preacher goes to heaven. After a while he gets an interview with God, and he asks the Almighty, "Lord, I had unwavering faith in you. Why didn't you deliver me from that flood?"
God shakes his head. "What did you want from me? I sent you two boats and a helicopter."
I thought this doc was just a come & go case... Never knew she had such serious part in Chicago Med

everyone has their right to deny medical treatment but if you don't want it you can't be wasting precious time and resources at the hospital

Well. It’s unfortunate but you can’t lie on health records. You have to tell the patient the truth. It’s one of the core values we treasure in healthcare. Even when it’s a tragic situation. There would never be a good time to tell someone there was a malfunction.
Unfortunately yes she would. Because it went against her initial wishes it's a possible lawsuit and the files would indicate a heartbeat upon surgery that the patient could see. It's sad but that's the role doctors have to play.
Personally, I love the blonde doctor after seeing her the first time here. She's blunt and no-nonsense. I cannot stand it when my specialists treat me with kids gloves. I looooove my doctor; I've had him about 25 years or so. He's more direct and explains his decision so I know what he's thinking. Again, my other specialists done care and will tiptoe around me. What's worse, is ibkbow when they are being lazy or hiding something.
It's unethical to continue the lie, Charles and Nathalie made the right call and i respect that neither of them hesitated to do the right thing.
It is very dangerous for a Doctor or even someone training to be a doctor to not have a heart.
These are the hardest cases, and especially to a couple that have tried for years. I had a father first begging us to “Save his miracle baby” we couldn’t, his wife was barely 12 weeks, and then it was “Please save my wife.” When he told him how serious it was. Too see a grown man crying defeated over the loss of a child he wouldn’t meet, broke my soul. It’s one of the many cases during my nursing career, that I will never forget.
I have never seen dr Charles angry before.

The funny thing about this is that this was never followed up on in the show. Dr. Charles said he'll be keeping an eagle eye on the girl but by the next episode, it was as if this never happened.

"there is a difference between being prepared and terrifying a sick woman" haha I have never heard anything more sickening in my 20 years as an ICU nurse... death was imminent and as a doctor it is your job to tell it like it is. not saying anything and leaving that to a student and throwing away blood that has been donated by people for people to actually survive on is horrible.
You're in the wrong profession. As a doctor and a human if you can't strike a balance, please transfer to a research position. As a nurse maybe this is above your pay grade for reason

As a doctor keeping your patient informed about everything is important, but the way you deliver that information is vital also. Here we have a doctor who wanted all the facts before they gave their patient the worst case scenario. Once the facts were known, the patient was informed and the patient made their decision. No matter how much you know, you can't force treatment on someone who doesn't want to be treated. Telling someone they are dying is just as much apart of the job as letting someone die if they don't want you to help them.
I remember when I was trying to keep a friends morale up in the hospital while his religious grandma was refusing treatment because of "might die" and "wouldn't recommend". Later, the best doctor in the hospital came down to her room and told her straight up (paraphrased translation) "hello madam, I have the pleasure, or rather displeasure, to tell you that in 24 to 36 hours we will, as you asked, discharge you;" (he paused here then continued with a sigh) "in a casket, straight to the cemetary." Then he left. Everybody in the room (doctors and nurses included) froze in shock at the comment. I am still surprised how she didn't tank her blood pressure from that experience. She died a natural death years later, having done the surgery, after getting to see her grandson(my friend) married.

I do understand the issue of wanting, or I guess in some cases even having, to keep the patient's mental state in mind, but I have yet to hear from any medical professional who would _not_ rather tell the ugly truth straight away if "allowed", it facilitates their job _sooo_ much if they can be pretty sure that the patient fully understands the situation. It's part of why I tell any doctors that I want any good or bad news straight up.

@@misterbin00 I respect it, my daughter was 14 weeks prem so born at 26 weeks which meant I was 5 months pregnant. Her Dr was just amazing, I told him to be straight with me and niot lie at all or sugar coat anything to me. And he didn't. Which I am forever grateful to him as he prepared us for every possible side effects from been ventilated including death and brain hemorrhages causing brain damage, deafness, blindness ypu name it he told me about it !! She is now 20 and doing well and thankfully only came away with minor issues including heart and lung damage both she out grew by 8 years, learning issues due to her having 6 brain hemorrhages which killed off parts of her brain but it rewired its self eye damage so she wears glasses and she's deaf, oh and she did die three times, so as her Dr said minor issues lol
Sugar coating doesn’t always help. Patients deserve honesty even if it hurts.
That's one of the biggest problems in the medical system: facts and rationality are important, but so is compassion and empathy.

Dr. Charles is right though. No matter how much you want to save a patient, it is their body, their decision. A parent of mine is in a religion that when it comes to medical aid, they don't accept ANY kind of blood donation (iykyk) and we did have a scare once of them dying from blood loss. Eventhough my siblings and I knew giving them blood would save them, we respected their choice and told the doctors every chance they came asking, no blood. Luckily my parent survived but at the end of the day, we and their doctors respected their decision to not accept blood, eventhough they were on death's doorstep.

The blond nurses question was while morbid and sad was a valid question however lying about the fetus heartbeat and the bl fact that it was alive and lying straight to that woman’s face was the absolute worst thing she could have done.

aside from all the problems here I never understood why some ppl assume they can only be parents to children that are genetically related to them. If i can be totally honest, i think its sick that people will prioritize being pregnant or having a baby over their own life. I dont understand how anyone could think "i would die in order to give birth, therefore leaving my child without me as a parent". Its not normal, and its a romanticization of happy family.

I had many years of infertility and many miscarriages. I am lucky to have never experienced an ectopic, but I know the pain of losing a very wanted baby. I can understand that the blonde doctor crossed a professional line, but I cannot imagine coddling a patient trying to kill themselves to "save" a non-viable fetus. The "baby" is already dead. It cannot survive where it is and will kill you if it grows too big. I would never allow myself to die to keep a non-viable fetus alive. My life (and the life of this hypothetical patient) has value and means something. There is such a gross misunderstanding and so much misinformation about what an ectopic is. If mother dies, so does the non-viable fetus. This entire scenario was oddly handled by this show. I empathize with the gut-wrenching feeling of losing a very much wanted baby, but to blatantly ignore the opinions of doctors trying to save your life is odd behavior.
I am totally on blond doctor side. She had best intention. She respected the patient by not treating her as a dumb religious fanatic, but rather as a intelligent strong woman.

It was weird that the couple didn’t know what an ectopic pregnant was (yes I know it’s a Tv show and it’s written for dramatic effect) but when it was explained to them, did it not dawn on the mother that if she died, the baby would die too? I think the blonde doctor did what needed to be done. It’s weird to sacrifice your life for a fetus that has 0% chance to live past next week. That just means the husband suffers two losses at the same time.

I always liked doctor Charles but after this episode I was wowed at his performance.
As someone who went to nursing school, it was heavily pushed that patients can refuse treatment, even if it kills them; however, I can understand the student doctor’s desire to save the woman from self-destruction (although there was no need for her to comment on anatomy vs miracles.)
Dr. Curry got put on blast here, but the way Dr. Manning stopped her from telling the parents about why the risk factors are still relevant was wrong too!
They need to be told that they're not out of the woods yet, whether they believe it or not. It should be no difference than telling them their labwork

I appreciate the other doctors handling it this way. I don’t agree with the mother’s choice but it is her body. If a doctor can get away with this without recourse they will feel emboldened to do worse when they have more power.
If the mother didn't know what an ectopic pregnancy is and that it's never viable and that bleeding internally from the damage the fetus developing in the wrong place causes, the woman *is* delusional. I would have gotten the husband more involved to persuade the patient to be realistic.
I was going to comment this show was pushing the limits to be able to tell the storyline in a way that was less morally dubious on the part of the blonde doctor, but then I read some of these comments that make it clear a lot of people don't know the difference between an ectopic pregnancy and an extreme high risk pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy, even if there is a "heartbeat" (which isn't even really a heartbeat at that stage), has a 0% percent chance of viability. There are pregnancy complications that threaten the life of the mother but not necessarily the child, there are pregnancy complications that will make the pregnancy nonviable but still theoretically could be physically delivered if that matters to the mother, and then there is ectopic pregnancy. I don't think any of the doctors really tried to explain this.
@@Lespritdelescali The mother was holding on to the miracle of conception after trying for so long but wouldn't accept that her life was in danger (as she was slowly dying). The possibility of bearing a child became so overwhelming emotional she couldn't make what was a sound decision; she would have died and in the old days no doubt women did, religious or not. Her delusional reasoning is what creates the conflict in the storyline.
The ectopic happened to a friend of mine. The situation was a bit different but the pain and internal bleeding she experienced was killing her. The first inexperienced doctor said it was constipation. Thank God she got a second opinion in time to save her life.

@@Lespritdelescali a baby has a heartbeat at 5 weeks. I have had an ultrasound at that stage when I thought I was having a miscarriage twice. It is early, but at that week, the heartbeat can actually be very strong.

I had a friend that had an ectopic pregnancy. She is Christian & refused to abort.
I spoke to her because she refused to discuss w others.
I explained to her how God gave us medicine.
It was not a decision to abort. But the baby died the minute it was implanted in the wrong place. It was not about faith. It was decision to live or not.
What ended up happening in the end?
Her tube busted in the process of deciding & had surgery.
She had decided to do the abortion. She held guilt because others made her feel bad for decision.
But me & a couple of church leaders convinced her it was medical & not a moral issue.
@@julias2855 Removing an ectopic pregnancy is a life-saving procedure. That the embryo dies is an unfortunate consequence, not the goal. Abortion is a procedure to kill the embryo/fetus, by intent. The two should not be equated.

Why didn’t a doctor say “if you die then so does the fetus”? And “if you die then you don’t get to have another chance to have another baby”?
If I was there, I would ask the patient back "If this baby is from God then why God put it at the wrong place? He's not God then because He's wrong." Done it to one of my clients before (her issue is about her kid) and it worked lol
You know, instead of lying to the patient and telling them that the heartbeat wasn’t there, you could just say that if they don’t do surgery, the mom and baby will die, and then you would loose everything. And then let them know they can always get pregnant again and then you could try to figure out why she couldn’t get pregnant and then she might consent to the surgery.
There’s also adoption and surrogacy options too I wish the doctors told her that as well

I don't think they explained to the patient well enough that ectopic pregnancies are unfortunately a non-starter. There isn't anything you can do to save the foetus. So that effectively eliminates the foetus from the decision whether or not to have the surgery. Her choice becomes 'Do you want to live or do you want to die?', and if she says she wants to die, then the doctors have to decide if they are willing to essentially perform an assisted suicide by watching her die painfully. You can't force someone to have a surgery when they refuse, it has to be their choice, but I don't see why they weren't clearer about this element. She was acting like the pregnancy could become viable if she waited.
On another point, the whole believe that God will fix it is just so confusing. Do you believe that God purposefully made the pregnancy ectopic and will then change it for some unknown reason, or are you saying that God was sleeping on the job so the pregnancy was accidentally ectopic and he will fix the mistake? Why would you trust God to fix something that went wrong on his watch in the first place? And if you think God is going to fix your health so you ignore the recommendations of your doctors, why did you bother coming to the doctors for help anyway? I mean this more respectfully than it sounds, it's just this sort of talk about God has never really made any sense to me.

A 7 year old girl defined faith thus : 'Faith is believing something you know can not possibly be true.' Maybe that's why I was told as a child, 'Do not question your religion.' (I was raised as RC.) Reasoning can lead one away from religion. IMO, I'd rather be known for being a reasonable person.
This is one of the many, many, many reasons why I'm an atheist. If I were the doctor in this situation, and I had to let this woman die because she believed so strongly in something that didn't help her at all, I would need a lot of therapy, because even though it wouldn't be my fault, I would feel a lot of frustration and guilt.

I just wonder if the editors noticed that at 1:08 Curry used the hand sanitizer twice when walking out of the room, first she used her left hand then her right, but Dr. Manning didn't use any sanitizer when she left the room yet she was seen rubbing her hands together like she had used it.
I don't understand the mother in this case insisting on carrying on, if her dying would also mean the baby dying, so what would be the point?

I respect the blunt and straightforward approach here, it may not be sentimental or comforting but no matter how kind and soft one approaches this scenario, it is a horrible and painful experience. No amount of sugar coating can remove that.

Reproduction is a biological drive, it can't be dismissed so flippantly. Adoption to many feels like a personal failure because they couldn't perform their biological function. It may not make sense to some, but it's it's real imperative and drive of humans.

The way they initially explained the ectopic pregnancy to the patient was horrible. No “I’m sorry” or words of sympathy for her heartbreak…just a bunch of medical jargon that she didn’t understand. Bedside manner goes a long way when dealing with something so sad and delicate like an ectopic pregnancy.
Some people prefer straight to point medical jargon. I know I do, because they're not really sorry but they do want to at least try & solve your issue.

She’d been trying to conceive for over 12 years and is now finally pregnant, from an emotional standpoint, it was understandable that she wasn’t ready/willing to let it go. She wanted it so badly that she was willing to grasp at anything, even God, to make it work. They should’ve done a better job of making it clear - the foetus wasn’t going to survive. She could either choose to live and try again (or find alternative means of having a child) or die for a foetus that wasn’t going to survive no matter what she did.
She believes in 2000 year old fairytales about talking bushes and talking snakes and human resurrection after a 3 day nap.
