Any recommendations on how to make a door to keep out wind and rain but that they don't feel trapped ?

I've seen some houses where they cut a square door and keep the cut-out panel, trim it down a little so it fits the hole loosely, then use tape along the top to make a hinge so the panel swings back and forth, like a dog door...
