This day, a year ago, I would have never thought that in the next 12 months I am going to invest a lot of my time and hard earned money on landscape photography - that includes the initial equipment, the 3 upcoming trips this summer and many more to come later in life. Tom has been my biggest inspiration in my journey so far and I'm sure I'm not the only soul he's influenced. My sincere thank you, Tom!
So you walked 2 hrs up, got one really good image, walked down in under 2 hours and then had breakfast. Sounds like the perfect shoot to me! For me half the joy of landscape photography is going places and walking about.
You're such a brilliant storyteller - you have one of the only channels on YT with videoes of 10+ mins which have my full attention from beginning to end! :)
Thomas you work so hard to achieve your pictures. Planning. Walking and waiting and waiting. You give everything 200%. That's what makes you so good. Better than the rest
The thing I can't get over is, he actually walks ahead, plants a camera and then backtracks and then walks forward again like it's totally candid. Hiking some places is enough without going through all that. That's real dedication. And he won't be doing that at 40, so this is history so to speak. It will live on. Sometimes the journey is better than the destination.
+ThomasHeaton Lucky shots. I was at Mer de Glace train station last January. Weather was beautiful down in Chamonix, but when I got up to the train station a blizzard blew in and I got a beautifully composed shot of a white out!
Someone has commented that you are a great story teller, well, let me tell you, they're spot on! I've learnt so much off your videos and that's because you tell it as a story, you make it really easy to follow. You're such an inspiration, every time I watch a video all I want to do is pick up my camera and set off somewhere. Keep up the exceptional work you're doing Thomas, I for one think it's brilliant...
I really appreciate the sentiment of making just one or two photograph up there on the glacier. Quality over quantity. It's so easy to overdo a scene resulting in a photographic option paralysis.
I've been to Chamonix on three separate occasions, I've twice went up to the Aguille Du Midi, once across the face of Mont Blanc to Pointe Helbronner and once to the Mer De Glace on the tram, I love the place!
so true about making things happen. unfortunately not many people realise this and cruise through life not chasing after the things they really want. enjoy your vids mate. keep them coming
I like to come back and watch this video every so often seeing as though a 40x30 print of this lives on my living room wall! Edition 2/10. This video makes me so happy. Ace.
Watching old vids over lunch. Its a beast of a hike to that station and an amazing place. The glacier is one of my favourite compositions taken on my 5DS with that s-curve. I probably prefer the Aguilles Rouge side of the valley, as it's greener, has more wildlife and overlooks this side of the range.
inspirational videos. i am a Sport photographer but just got myself a 6D and i am ready to take on the landscapes after 7 years as a freelance motorsport photographer. thanks for the videos now to start learning.
Hello Thomas! So very wonderful video you made again! I do so much appreciate everything you do and show here! Wishing you the very Best always! Best Regards, Charl (Sweden)
Ive been binge watching your newer videos and and coming back to these older ones now, great as ever Also had a good laugh at "This is the first shot I've taken with this camera, and I can report that it took a picture"
After watching so many of your lovingly produced films, I am sure you are a very nice and moderate guy. But I really have to tell you that I love the scene where you took the pictures of these tourists, Mr. Heaton! I know how annoying these questions are, by all people asking you, just because you hold a camera in your hand.
Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for including the details of the hike and time it took to get there. Videos are always inspiring, I am fairly new to photography ( 1.5 years) and every time I watch one of your videos, I get motivated to go out and get better.
Thomas, you really should go to Dolomites in Italy! Taking pictures of the "Rosengarten" light effects is totally worth the trip, and if you get a good bright moon, the effect can be amazing!
Excellent and informative video with stunning scenery thrown in for good measure, thanks Tom! I'm sorry the weather was bad but at least you missed the terrible flooding elsewhere in Europe. I'm looking forward to seeing the pp video.👍
Quality over quantity, I agree. When you have the image in your head of what you want to get and you get it, then move on. I also like the idea of the L bracket that you used. I’ve never thought of getting one before but this video has peaked my interest. Keep up the nice work and the videos; I enjoy watching them and hearing your insights.
I think this is absolutely hilarious. I just happened upon this vid as I'm interested in the 5dsr and just heard your comment about the L-bracket. This is because just last night, I watched your latest video on "things I wish I knew earlier". Amazing how we all change over time.
Loved this video! I spent a few days in Chamonix whilst on holiday last July (before I properly got in to photography) and I wish I'd taken advantage of it more. It was really interesting to see a photographers take on places that I'd actually been.
can you please do a video on what are the best camera and lense setups for shooting landscapes at some what a budget, like under 2k or 1.5k. thanks, and keep up the good work, really enjoying ur vids.
There is no best camera and lense setup for landscape shootings. That depends on so many things. Do you want a lightweigt setup because you hike a lot and don't want to carry all the gear. Are you the zoom guy or a prime guy. Do you already have some gear or do you buy everything new. 1. I would buy a camera with a great dynamic range (most Sony and Nikon do normally have a great DR, not so Canon) 2. Buy light gear because you don't take the gear with you if it is to heavy. For example: Tripod 1,2 kg + Camera (DSLM) 0,3 kg + 2 or 3 Lenses 1 kg + Batteries, Filters and some other stuff 0,5 kg = 3 kg and more 3. My experience is that you need 3 focal ranges for landscapes: The ultra wide (around 18-22mm (full-frame equivalence)). The still wide (around 28-40mm) and the tele (around 100-200mm or more). The range between 40 and 100mm is for my taste mostly to wide or to narrow. 4. If you are really into landscapes you are going to buy some filters sooner than later which are also not the cheapest (the quality ones) My setup would be for 1500€: 500€ Sony a6000 (+50€ for some spare batteries) 800€ Sony Objektiv AF E 16-70mm 4.0 ZA OSS 280€ Sony Objektiv AF E 55-210mm 4.5-6.3 OSS maybe later when your wallet allows you to buy a ultra wide lens 900€ Zeiss E-Mount Objektiv Touit 12mm 2.8 If you are not a professional photographer you most probably don't need a full frame camera. I went from apsc to full frame with some much more expensive (and heavier) lenses and wouldn't do it again.
+Jürgen Kleiß sorry I should have specified that I was looking for something somewhat lightweight for the pct thru hike. Thanks for your detailed response, really appreciate it.
That's right go out and shoot. But my attempt is that many people don't take their gear with them if its to heavy and big. The best camera is the camera that you have with you :)
Hi! Sorry, I am delayed with your vlogs...I must say that photo with the climbers is my favourite! This is my type of photos. Do you know the climber's names? Maybe some famous... :-)) I´ve been several times in Geneva but not there...I am not a big fan of Alps but that glacier is beautiful!! You know, I´ve too many vertigos and that kind of landscapes cause me... Thank you so much for all your kindness, proficiency and sharing of knowledge.

That's awesome to hear. I also apologise for any expense you have incurred.
Started reading a book by Thomas Heaton and voila I'm here! Thank you, Thomas!
Just scanned the code and saw your comment!
Same Here! I can’t wait to dive into Thomas Heaton’s book!
Loving Thomas's book, the video attachment to each picture puts even more life to the reading experience!
So you walked 2 hrs up, got one really good image, walked down in under 2 hours and then had breakfast. Sounds like the perfect shoot to me! For me half the joy of landscape photography is going places and walking about.
Julian Baird absolutely. I far prefer to put in some work on my feet and top it off with taking a few photographs.
That's very kind, thank you.
That black and white photograph from ur window...with that mist is simply wowwwww!!!
The thing I can't get over is, he actually walks ahead, plants a camera and then backtracks and then walks forward again like it's totally candid. the photo with the 3 guys on the snow is realy incredible, there is no word for that. sometimes a photo have so much power you just can't describe it.
+ThomasHeaton Lucky shots. I was at Mer de Glace train station last January. Weather was beautiful down in Chamonix, but when I got up to the train station a blizzard blew in and I got a beautifully composed shot of a white out!
lol
Thanks Thomas! Cool that you show everything and not just them telling.
The alps, always nice to see. Your videos and photos too of course.
Thomas Heaton brings a smile on my face
Inspiring
This comment brings a smile to my face :)
I love your work Thomas... waiting the following video....

I really appreciate the sentiment of making just one or two photograph up there on the glacier. Quality over quantity. It's so easy to overdo a scene resulting in a photographic option paralysis.
Did you literally take one photo (as in, a single shutter release) or just compose for a single photo you wanted (maybe a few shots)?
Fantastic shot. I love that place and have quite a lot of pics taken from the same spot. It is truly a wonderful place.
its all about the motivation and skill, another great video
u speak of the eternal truth of photography as well as life in general
I've been to Chamonix on three separate occasions, I've twice went up to the Aguille Du Midi, once across the face of Mont Blanc to Pointe Helbronner and once to the Mer De Glace on the tram, I love the place!
You are one the best story tellers be it images or videos.
Always looking forward to your journeys.
Cracking videos Thomas, I never want them to end.
your process of taking a shot has helped me, in landscapes and the work necessary to get up and go!
I love your videos, shooting style, pictures, composition. Everything !!!
so true about making things happen. unfortunately not many people realise this and cruise through life not chasing after the things they really want. enjoy your vids mate. keep them coming

Make one day today! Good advice. Love your videos, feel like we are right there with you on each adventure.
Yes! I've only seen the first 7 seconds so far, but I'm a huge Alastair Humphreys fan, so I love the video already!
Watching old vids over lunch.

I'm loving watching your videos mate. Thanks or making them.
I'm greatly enjoying your channel. Thanks for sharing your adventure, photography advice and photographs. Best regards.

Brilliant video. The shot you got out of the window is brilliant. I think people often miss opportunities like that when they go out shooting.
simply stunning ! really enjoyed and as can see You too!
Thomas, you really should go to Dolomites in Italy! Taking pictures of the "Rosengarten" light effects is totally worth the trip, and if you get a good bright moon, the effect can be amazing!

man I wish my landscapes only took a 2 hour hike at 4am. good job. I wish you did a video while you were waiting at the station.
Great vlog! I appreciate learning about your planning and thought processes. I've said many "somedays" myself, so thanks for the nice reminder.
Wow.
What a nice video thomas, well done!
You are really a joy watching, and your photos are really great.
Can't wait to see where you go next!
Went out yesterday, got a crock of nonsense photographically but this video has inspired me, great images Thomas.

Thanks :)

There are too many variables. Landscapes can be shot on all lenses and all cameras. Just get out there.
