The style that inspired the latest Susperia poster is called Trash Polka, a Polish movement popularized in underground and international tattoo exhibits. I love his breakdown in styles and how design is an art of impact and visual storytelling. I think most of the people commentary forget this is a Vanity Fair video and not a Skillshare on poster design.
I can’t believe how upset everyone is getting over the guy marking the posters lol. They’re copies, people! Don’t worry you too can download a wonderful unmarked pdf of every poster and recover the original looks!
I only just started watching this video and I'm already annoyed by it. Not because he's tarnishing the posters, but because it serves so little purpose. It's just busywork for his hands when he could simply point at the things he's talking about, going on to draw boxes around them is pointless.
they need a "Best Graphic Design" category at the Academy Awards for movie posters, so much intricate detail goes into these movie posters and they need to be recognized. Saul Bass would've definitely won the award.
Then what am I a frozen chicken? Being humble makes you a better student. And no, you're definitely not the only person in here that had learned something. Sorry to disappoint you.
Why everybody is so upset about him drawing on the posters? My college professors used to do this to my designs(and every student design) all the time, its just a few posters not like wasting too much paper
Everyone's complaining that he's taking the designs so literally and talking about them so practically, but that's how actual design critique works. You talk about what everyone can see but through the lens of design. It's not like we see some magical dimension or something.
I really want to say that I LOVE the poster for Emmerich's GODZILLA. It's stylish and to the point. Also I remember when I was like 5 or something that this poster was in a McDonald's my parents took me a few times when this movie was released. I couldn't yet read or whatever but for some odd reason this image stuck with me
I was disappointed as well "here you see something so I'll circle around it". I'd have liked to hear stuff like why they used a specific font, why this collage style was popular, why they went for the minimalistic approach etc.
Anyone else love him drawing on the posters? I love these videos! I need more of these! Although more focussed like the Marvel one. Maybe comparing similarities and differences of genre?
@@TheBurritoMan1000 probably just referring to the fact that there was a specifically Polish style of poster design that was talked about in the video.
CAQ Vevo They are both examples of the poster being it’s own piece of art more than a typical visual advertisement. Visually they are fairly different but they both are unconventional.
And the best poster? Again it's the the original. The modern version (of the poster and the movie) completely misses what'll attract people to a movie like this, the inner psychology and wonder of those who've chosen to take a role in life playing in front of 1000's. Big mistake to assume that the audience is so sophisticated that they won't care.
it seems to be a trend with a lot of graphic designers. chip kidd makes me fall asleep every time we watch something about him in class but he’s brilliant
He made multiple videos. I imagine he did them all on the same day. Likely had a bit of a wait time between videos and that there were reshoots if something went wrong, fumbled a word. You can see cuts even withing segments. He was probably tired.
Christian Salgado Four official versions, but some argue that there’s six versions if you count the 2013 Bollywood version “Aashiqui” and the 1932 movie “What Price Hollywood?” of which the story is somewhat based on. It’s a timeless story.
This is more of just describing what’s there. “Here you see purple. And this is a rectangle.” I was expecting more explanation than simply telling me what I already see.

The suspiria remake poster is pretty good
I've never seen that Ocean's 11(2001) poster. I only ever see the one that was on the dvd box.
exactly what I was going to comment too. besides, he seems to be proud to have drawn that poster which we never saw lol
Same, kind of a bummer...the black and orange photo poster sucks.
I guess the studio company thought it wasn't commercial enough.
So... basically just copy Saul Bass and you’re on the right track 😂
Poster analysis is the best "series" here! Things that i knew intuitively, now will have background! It really inspires to study the poster history!!!

Benzaiten exactly. His overused the word ‘aesthetic’ as well. It’s not very introspective.

To the last minute I was waiting for polish posters to be mentioned! :D
This is reminiscent of-

being good ad designing posters ≠ being good at explaining posters
I felt like he was making things up on the fly and pulling them out of thin air a lot of the time.
this video is 100% what art school critiques sound like, it's so hard to explain what things are communicating visually
Would love to see something like this but with album art maybe featuring different designers
In summary: "Aesthetic"
?

The actress of the first movie didn't have the same cultural impact as Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand so it ends up being forgotten
Didn't really learn anything. Also it wasn't Kanji, Godzilla was written in Katakana.
If it hasn't been mentioned yet, in the second Godzilla Poster, those are not missiles, but are in fact HALO parachutists.
