  • "Swirling Colors" is a collaborative re-use of a previous Beltline art installation (2014’s "Spinning Yarns"), that directly involves the local community in the creation of new public art. On August 27th, nearly 40 BeltLine trail users of all ages left their mark on these giant pinwheels by spray-painting part of each pinwheel, resulting in unique artwork produced by the community that it serves. The sculpture was not only designed to entertain and amuse, but to make artwork with a personal connection to the BeltLine user. Some people spray-painted their initials, one couple played spray-paint tic-tac-toe, while others painted randomly.

I do leave these up during routine thunderstorms, but for true severe weather (like a hurricane), it's best to take them down. But. for instance, the pinwheels in this video spent three years outside installed along this paved trail. I never took them down, even for the most extreme weather (we never had a hurricane during that time period, but here in Atlanta we certainly have our share of thunderstorms). And when those storms hit, you can bet these pinwheels were going crazy fast during the worse storms, but they still survived. You have to be confident in your build quality to handle the storms though... Make sure things are well balanced (so it can handle the speed), nuts and bolts are tight, and the support structure is solid. I have had other artwork come down in storms, but it was the support pole that bent, and not the kinetic sculpture itself that failed.

@buentaste I’m so glad you enjoy my art! I don’t have anything besides the RUclips videos describing my process. But I encourage you to just experiment! Good luck
