When to a shipper in Rochester NY. I was told to be there before 15:00 and would be immediately loaded. Got there at 14:30 walk into the shipping office and told them I was here for the Houston load. The lady in charge with a bad attitude said that yes there was a load for Houston but they only load in the morning. I said O.K. and found the payphone (yes, in the days before pocket computers.) call dispatch and told them the situation. He said if nothing happens in a half hour call back. 5 minuets later, a suit came out of a set a doors and walked into the shipping office. Two minutes after that a whole bunch of people came running out the office. Someone told me which door to back into. As I was being loaded I saw the person in charge walking to her car with a cardboard box in her arms. 20 minuets later, when I collected the bill of lading I was told that the suit fired her on the spot and told everyone else that if they wanted a job in the morning that my truck had better be loaded and gone with in the next half hour. Karma is a bitch.

I'm a shipper, contracted to a global corporation, and this made me smile. My boss requires us to turn a truck in an hour or less (20-28 pallets per load and do all the paperwork). My record is 12 trucks loaded and rolling in 9.5 hours. I hear the horror stories, from the drivers about other facilities, but they know what to expect when they pull into our yard.

This is why I'm back to working local hourly. On days where we're contracted to haul and get told to wait, I smile and tell them, "We're charging you by the hour. Take all the time you need." Trucks and equipment move out of the way. I get unloaded immediately. Bam! Home for dinner.
I drive about 20% of the time and work outside the truck the other 80%. Better pay. I have greater control over my schedule. Most driving jobs seem like a scam. Driver shortage? My ass! Trucking would pay better if there was an actual driver shortage.

    • @garthlocklin6355
      @garthlocklin6355 2 года назад +27

The biggest part of the scam is paying $3500 give or take for a Class A CDL license. I have driven numerous straight trucks over 40 years now and millions of safe miles. Most trucking companies treat drivers like dirt or worse. I was an independent O/O for a few years with a lease from 94-96 and it was all good for a year or so until the boss started screwing the drivers with shorter trips and more unloaded miles. When I complained the boss said, "I could hire 100 guys from Pakistan who will work 7 days a week and never complain." Oh? Here's the keys and I quit being and independent for you, go get those guys!" They're still in business but have downsized considerably since then.

I hear ya buddy, I’ve been in the industry a about 3.5yrs now and have done a lot of reading/philosophizing(not sure if that’s an actual word Lolol) about why there is a shortage and the causes for it as well as ways to solve it. My thoughts are this; 1) the mega-carriers have fist fucked the whole industry. (They are the only companies that can negotiate the insurance rates low enough to hire inexperienced drivers as well as obtain the liability insurance a company needs to avoid “nuclear verdicts” in civil court). 1a.) the mega carriers have recruiters that go to cdl training schools and blatantly lie to new drivers with promises of $40k-$80k in your first year of trucking, 80k is 2X 40k lololol. so they basically tell you that YOU CAN MAKE either 20+ $$$ p/hr or $10 p/hr in a 70hr work week!!! It’s fucked up. Ask any driver working for Werner or Schneider or Swift how much they make!!! Only guys making $80k+ drive for Foodliner or fed ex or UPS driving guaranteed local routes. 2) THEY TELL NEW DRIVERS THEY WILL BE HOME WEEKLY AND THEN THEY END UP OTR for 3+wks as soon as their training is done. THE COMPANIES BURN OUT THE DRIVERS WITHIN 6months!!! 3)60k drivers have failed drug/alcohol tests while tested on the job in last 18months according to FMCSA clearinghouse program, clearly there is a mental health issue involved here related to the industry if this is how drivers r coping with stress while either on duty or off. (Ironically the fmcsa allows them back on the job with a clean piss test and one appointment with a “specialist,”). So you end up with guys like this making RUclips videos bitching about every load they have or getting fucked up on drugs/alcohol when they park at the Pilot truck stop EVERYNIGHT for 10hrs. 4) the mega carriers give kickbacks to the cdl schools for the amount of new drivers the school sends to their companies. So there is no one telling the drivers “hey that Werner recruiter is a snake oil salesman I wouldn’t work there.” Lastly, I waited 6months or so after I got my CDL because I read the bullshit being fed to me at cdl training, was able to get a job at Foodliner that got me home daily as well as payed me a GUARANTEED WEEKLY $1200(now $1500 weekly) with quarterly $500 safety bonuses and $3000 annual Xmas bonus(now $5,500 after 3yrs there), I recruit the fuck out of every driver I talk to to go worth there(Foodliner also rewards me with $8000 (4X$2000 quarterly over 12months)referral bonuses per driver that puts my name on the job application. THE MEGA CARRIERS DONT OFFER ANYYYYYYYY OF THESE!!!!! Now that my legs r both asleep in this cushy ceramic stall at Loves I will end this rant. 🥸

There is no driver shortage. There are far more CDL holders than CDL jobs. You hit on exactly why companies are struggling to find drivers. Many companies don't care about the drivers. Yes, there are some that do and if you can find them, you've hit the jackpot, but the majority need their own attitude reset. I just found this and had to comment. I worked in shipping department for years. There would be times when near the end of my shift a driver would arrive with a trailer to unload. It would be a live load, and of course no one wanted to unload it. I would volunteer to stay later and unload the trailer. I did get overtime for the time I stayed, and the driver got his trailer unloaded, and was able to go on his way. I didn't mind the extra time, and the pay wasn't a factor either. I realized that the driver could have been delayed because of road traffic, or other situations. I just wanted to give him an easy end to his day. I loved working in shipping.

This plus unload and sort conveyor line pallet size parcels of finished shipping boxes at a box plant which came down the line like a traffic jam because each line had 4 machines running different orders. The worst days a truck would come in ahead of schedule and demand to be loaded because of some scheduling error. 14 hour days were the norm on a forklift. Almost non stop without breaks or lunch. I have empathy but little to none when I was going through it all. I kept my job because I could endure the abuse with almost No errors. Just after I set the brakes in the nearest truckstop I got a message asking me to "please go back." Sent a message saying if they still had the same attitude I'll leave again and they can come get it where I park. When I got back to the receiver there was a whole different attitude from the office people. I don't know what happened but maybe the right one got called on the phone. They rejected the load and immediately jumped in their cars and went home. They just wanted to go home.
I informed my company. I had another 6 pallets for another reciever due on Friday so I delivered those 6 pallets while my company tried to figure out what to do with the 13 rejected pallets on my truck. The owner of the warehouse where the dock workers rejected me told my company to have me bring the product back on Saturday morning at 03:00. No one showed up until 08:00 and it was the owner. I drove for 30+ years. I’ve had to give guys my last $10 to get them to unload me. That was back when my 4 kids were young and many times I lived on $35 to $50 bucks a week to eat on, sometimes weigh load, and/or showers at times. You untarp in Georgia or ANYWHERE down south you will lose 2 lbs pulling you tarps and 2 lbs tarping your next load. Had to have a shower before crawling into bunk, so many times I had to pay for a shower as I didn’t need fuel. These people thinking they are all powerful, (longshoreman were the WORST!) are worms.
The worst part about it, was when I was at 80 or 90 hours a week, SLEEP would be welcomed, but that’s when the WOULD unload/load me!! I would be dying for four or five hours of sleep and dispatch couldn’t do nothing about it, but nope! Then the shipper/receiver would off load or load. When rested up? Ready to go? Forget it. They would screw me every time! As much as I miss it everyday, I’m glad I’m out of it.

I think shop time was where I got screwed out of sleep the most. You put your truck in the shop to get fixed, knowing it's two or three hour job, so you wait and wait and wait and wait all day for your truck to be fixed so that you can get to work. Finally after you've already been up for 15 to 20 hours waiting on this truck to be fixed so that you could crawl into the sleeper and go to bed, they say your truck's done, and oh by the way we've got a load for you you pick up in an hour. So now you have a choice of turning down the load and crawling into bed, which is what you should do. Or knowing you made no money today, you accept the load and arrive at your destination after you've been up for 25 to 30 hours.

My boss worked on a big wally account for years, sent me out with the first delivery and I was told I would be unloaded. It was 8 pallets of fish and ice about 10.000 lbs per pallet. When I got to wally world they said it would be 300.00 to unload. They could have used a fork lift and unloaded in 5 minutes, but they left me in a giant warehouse and I had to hand unload those 200 lb coolers 2 deep all over the warehouse, 8 pallets turned into about 48 pallets. I drove back home for 5 hours and figured I would be fired , and when I got there the boss had already heard the news from the Winchester wally super warehouse that I would be unloaded immediately from now on at no cost. You should have seen the smile on his face, and I got a 300.00 tip from the boss

Good backing tips as well. How about a drone shot of you backing up with voice over commentary? It might help the newer drivers out there.

As someone who used to work in warehouse shipping, loading trailers etc, I can guarantee to you that the managers/higher ups of such places are NOT nice people. And not that I would want my bosses to be my best friend, hell no, but they have an alarming, I wanna say, ‘disconnection’ from their employees.
Treat their employees like crap, working conditions are crap, pay is usually crap. I have yet to see a shipper that offers their warehouse workers full benefits. The warehouses are rarely heated or air conditioned, and it’s a dusty, dirty environment. After a few hours of working in there, you’ll be shoveling dirt and dust out of your nose.
I mean, when I can make $15/hr flipping burgers in McDonald’s, or make $12-$13/hr stressing out about loading trailers at breakneck and downright dangerous speeds in a poorly lit warehouse with a manager with a hair-trigger temper that screams at me because I have two different colored socks on (true story).
      It’s a no brainer.

Been a minute since I caught one of your videos. I ran into those bad attitude, sh-t heads quite often; most especially, when I was pulling my own flat bed. The northern, union employees were among the worst. I left my wagon in the back dock, behind my church and started pulling vans and reefers for another company out of Eagan, MN., and Elk Grove, IL... Food Warehouses; shipping, but especially receiving were the most problematic for me. If I was ever burned by one, I would never pull it again. The company never gave me any grief, refusing to pull loads that I had problems with in the past. They would put me on high value, new customer contracts repeatedly; because I approached every shipper / receiver the same way you do, upbeat and positive... First impressions usually make the difference. Take care of your awesome family. God Bless!

You want to mess up a golfer's swing, you ask him to explain how he does it while he's doing it. Explaining how to back a long trailer while you're doing it it makes it more difficult. I know that you can do better than that on distracted in a tighter spot. One of the few things in a while that make me miss driving.

I had no friends once and wound up in a 5-speed POS with a giant manual steering wheel that couldn't get out of it's own way! Month later I was in a clean 13 spd Pete cabover I fell in love with. She never saw dust on the dash for 2 years, full maintenance, polished my own wheels. Even after some long longnose rides including an anteater with a 444 Comealong, i still missed that Pete!

85 N to Greenville was packed this afternoon...I lost nearly an hour off my ETA from Perry GA to Greenville. I took the scenic route home...Hartwell-Athens-Madison-Forsyth. Better than stop and go all the way! Fireworks are legal in Georgia, but apparently there's a shortage so I imagine sellers are milking it for all they can. I was on the lookout for a truck with John 3:16 on the back but I never saw it...
