I wanted to like it more than I actually did unfortunately. I remember sitting in the theater wanting to laugh at parts but ended up fake laughing or just feeling awkward not laughing

I enjoyed it overall. I think it could have been great if they focused more on the OG characters and had less side characters. Like DeFoe who was very funny, wasn't really necessary. Same with Theroux, I think Ortga's story could have been the main driving factory.

For me it was cool to see Keaton easily step back into that manic energy that he had in the first film, and I think Catherine O'Hara may be the funniest person alive after seeing her in the movie. I did like Willem Dafoe's character too, and as far as the story went they did resolve everything a little too quickly, but overall I did enjoy it, I give it a 7.5/10 possibly an 8 cuz for me it was what I expect from a Tim Burton film

I saw the original in theaters as a teen and it has always been one of my favorite movies. One that I will re-watch occasionally. When it comes to this movie, I think that many of the cast members turned in solid performances. I enjoyed the throwbacks to the original movie and I like how they expanded the universe and let us see more of the other side.
Overall, I liked it. I think it's kind of messy but I'm going to go and see it again and give it another chance.

Why would they ignore the father character just because the actor is a felon? You need to take your emotions out of this and learn to separate the character from the actor. The father played an integral role in part 1...so simply dismissing him takes you out the movie! They HAD to include him but did so in a clever way that doesn't diminish the serous crimes of Jeffrey Jones. It was a brilliant execution. And obviously his death had to be illustrated in the after life as this is a Beetlejuice movie...but again they did it in a clever way. Delia mourning her late husband and trying to find him in the netherworld is on point because she did love him as established in part 1.

    there be spoilers below. ✨
I still think my idea for the plot was better, after they announced his wife's casting forever ago I thought I'd be amazing if this time around he had a son and he was trying to get their kids together... while creeping on Lydia and the wife getting all jealous and malicious.
I really enjoyed the plot with astrid, but don't understand how that was seen as the through plot, and it also cut into the time we had with delores who ultimately was just a blow job joke (funny but not endearing since we only saw her pull herself together, kill two spirits, and get defeated almost instantly)
I had a problem a little bit with the baby joke, specially in day and age of body rights. they weren't even married and he made a baby burst through Lydia's stomach. while it was funny I had a bit of a taste issue with it.... even though I love beetlejuice for not being pc sometimes at the heart of it.
Catherine ohera stole is for me, but I didn't find it a little annoying that the movie chose not to have her dad's actor in it... but he was still present as a character through the whole movie. he's icky and they shoulda just left it at he died.
I also love how into it defoe was, but he just took more screen time from an all ready busy plot.
I've also had the bee gees song stuck in my head since Friday.

I wish they'd either gone crazy into the afterlife world or kept it more grounded and focused on the boy's parents as stand-ins for the Maitlands. There was just too much and not enough focus. My wife and 15-year-old were really disappointed in this, and they were more excited for it going in than I was. I think that's why it did so well -- a large age range of interest at a time when competition was weak. I don't foresee it having long legs/repeat business.

Beetlejuice is my favorite movie. I just enjoy having more time with the characters so it would have taken a lot for me to dislike it. But I agree with almost everything you said. The Delores subplot was very extraneous. It feels like a producer and/or executive gave a note that said the stakes felt too low. And then I think Tim Burton just wanted to cast his girlfriend so he did. That's how I think that happened
Lydia's daughter is called Astrid, BTW. But the ghost boy twist was so obvious I pegged it months ago. I left comments on other channels about how everybody should keep an eye on him. That one was super obvious. Rory was bad too. It made Lydia seem slow. How did she fall for all his crap? Maybe if she were deathly afraid of being alone or something, that would still be bad but at least it would have been explained. He could have used another pass
I didn't think it felt like five movies but I do think it felt like two or three. I did like it tho. I really do enjoy seeing these people again. I do hope they finish the trilogy out but soon. Keaton was clearly much older. I don't think I want an 80-year-old Betelgeuse. But I would like to see another one in the next few years

I think the first Beetlejuice is great - It moves at a good pace, all the characters are wonderfully engaging, the new dynamics that can take place in one location gives it a palpably exciting vibe as we watch things unfold, with continually interesting new developments. The purgatory underground world and offbeat humour are super fun and inventive, providing excellent weird charm and personality, along with strong regular humour. Beetlejuice as a character also leaves the desired, larger-than-life impression and impact that makes his looming presence through most of the film (he appears late) be given all the credibility it deserves. The amateurish-type special effects and distinctly small scale are all part of the charm too.
I consider the sequel good - Certainly a worthwhile endeavour and it's very exciting to see where all the characters are now. Beetlejuice's looming presence is effectively more powerful here than in the first, due to Lydia's ever-present fear and apprehension of him. Astrid's resentment and bitterness at her mother's seemingly crazy antics also provide palpable intrigue, as it's obviously foreshadowing that the truth will be revealed. Even though the movie is served well by its quick, manic-feeling tone, which compliments all the wackiness well, her reaction to discovering the truth definitely could've been more of a shell-shocked one and a more substantial and longer apology would've been better. Beetlejuice is just as strong as he was in the first movie, perhaps even a little stronger, as the movie attempts to up the stakes with his threat level, and succeeds. Due to the quick, manic tone which compliments the wackiness of the whole story very well, the multiple separate subplots don't feel out of place not being more connected. The movie feels like you're having a sugar rush in all the right ways. Excellent visual imagination is on display, and it's fun to see how polished and blockbuster-y this film is compared to the first, with a bigger scale for the purgatory underworld, songs playing over stylised scenes, and more complex plot compared to the simplicity of the first's.
I guess the movie's biggest problem is its undercooked roles for Delores and Wolf Jackson - They have great presence but are given very little to do, and their potential generally feels wasted. With Jeremy being a villain in a subplot too, Delores, with her terrifying presence and apparently suave confidence feels like she should've had a bit more to do, being the focal point as the villain of the overall story, which feels entirely deserved. Since the finale is so reminiscent of the first's too with the wedding, more scenes with Delores would've made the overall story feel a bit more dynamic in the right way. Perhaps the filmmakers were scared to do this as it's already 12 minutes longer than the first one, and they didn't want to drastically make things more complex, but I believe this film should've been an Aliens or Terminator 2 to the original - Expanding the world by being larger in scale and more action-oriented in a confident way.
In the first movie, Lydia could see ghosts due to being "strange" as a goth girl, but I don't understand why Astrid can see a ghost - I guess she appears to be an outcast at school? There should've been a clear explanation. It's minor but Rory being so self-involved and jerky while proposing at a funeral should've called more attention from Astrid, I think - The others there are more relaxed and could consider him offbeat and not-all-there regarding common sense, but Astrid, being so cynical and aggressively down-to-Earth should've made a comment on his behaviour. I'm not saying she should complain or say there's something wrong with him, since she has such palpable resentment towards her mother for the supernatural perpetuating work, which makes Astrid rather uncaring and apathetic towards her overall, but realistically, she should've noted it.

I watched 'Beetlejuice' with my 11 year old niece last week and surprised her with a trip to see the sequel over the weekend. After the film I said I enjoyed it but I thought it had nothing on the original. She disagreed and thought the sequel was fun, crazy, and funny. I'm glad she felt the way she did and she got a lot from it.

I love Monica Belluci, but her character wasn't needed. We could have had another reason for him needing to marry Lydia. I think the kid and his parents and that whole storyline could have been ejected. It feels like the movie was, at one point, supposed to be about Astrid dealing with her grief of losing her father, but then the Jeffrey Jones stuff happened. I wanted Astrid to be so grief stricken and wants to go into the Afterlife to find her father because Lydia never saw him. I wanted Lydia and Beetlejuice to team up as a sort of Dante and Mephistopheles touring Hell to find Astrid. If we cut Monica and the boyfriend we'd have enough time to tell a deep, and heartfelt, story about death and grief and letting go.

I felt like i was missing a lot of tim burtons style, besides everything that they pulled directly from the first movie. I was hoping for more new things that felt like tim burton rather than revisiting things from the first movie and using them differently. I agree that they had too many plots but still enjoyable to watch overall. 6.1/10

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 😈. Def sets up 3rd w title too. Money it made it’s a guarantee even if it’s a pretty fun movie. Like 6 or 6.5. Twists I thought maybe parents were ghosts and he tricked her & he that killed them - I didn’t see coming. Keaton was Keaton. Wyona. I felt for Astrid’s Jenna’s character bit bout her father and not belonging. Yeah, grandfather father should’ve never had much time and been at end w that reveal shark bite +Delia dying and them acting nonchalant seemed weird to me. Thought she may do whst friend was gonna make Theroux ride soul train lol

So I just got home from seeing it and I feel similar. To me it felt disjointed. Something about the cuts to the different plot points felt off. I loved Keaton and the musical numbers but felt they dragged on. The "twist" was predictable from the get go to me. As soon as we didn't see the parents I said, oh all of you are dead. The finale was also so quick Despite my issues with the movie I did have fun with it. But left it like meh

  • @Rayskinz
    @Rayskinz 4 месяца назад

This film is best enjoyed if you can set aside critical analysis and simply revel in its spectacle. While it has moments of fun, the overall narrative feels disjointed, missing key opportunities to deliver a cohesive story. The excessive number of subplots contribute little to the film's substance, leaving it feeling unnecessarily convoluted. The balance of character screen time also raises issues, as some characters are given far too much attention, while others feel underdeveloped. That being said, Michael Keaton and Catherine O'Hara seamlessly step back into their roles, offering performances that anchor the film. Jenna Ortega’s character brings a fresh dynamic, but unfortunately, Winona Ryder’s portrayal feels oddly out of sync with the rest of the cast, though it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why. Of course, that's just my opinion.

@CoyJandreau as someone with colon cancer, I can say death can be funny. It is the punchline. Life is a big joke. What is serious in life is the relationship you have with people in your life. That's why it focuses on Astrid and her Dad, Linda, and Delia as the grieve the loss of the grandfather. Beetlejuice is just the chaos that brings them closer as "death" itself
