  • As y'all know, I try to film as many of these videos all in one go, and just recently, I spied some mealybugs on this San..err...Dracaena pethera. Doh! Here we go again: Pest Management episode! Anywhosie, this is #133 of "365 Days of Plants". And yes, oh yes, I'll be getting around to the collapse of Sansevieria into Dracaena soon....
The planter is a vintage one that had cracked, but I glued back up so it's as good as old. :)
I'll be touching upon where this plant is native to, how it grows, where I'm growing mine in my home, and other basic care tips.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.
    Featured plant:

For years I kept my sansevierias indoors. Living in the American south, I started taking them outside once night temps stay 50 or above, usually late April. They reside on a north facing porch until nights start dropping below 50, which is about mid-October. They get bright light, regular water (at leat once a week, a little more during times we have warm and hot winds blowing on a regular basis. They also get half-strength fertilizer several times during their growing season. They really seem to thrive much better with the outdoor time. Regarding S. kirkii varieties, I have several that come from a plant I ordered from Thailand about 2000, which arrived as just a single leaf with a few roots. After a year it hardly did anything. I was at the point of throwing it out when it sprouted a rosette. It maintained a small size single rosette until almost 2010, at which time it took a growth spurt and sprouted a pup. When the two were large enough, I split them into two pots. Those really took off growing and again put out pups, which now make four plants from the original leaf. Two of them are now in 8-inch hanging pots with leaves about 10-inches long. They also have multiple sets of growth from the rhizome, so the pots are quite impressive. Last year I expanded to S. kirkii 'Copertone' and now have two, also in hanging pots. So my love of S. kirkii is the result of that original leaf, which is now a 22 year old plant!

Just bought a coppertone. Here in Singapore I grow these plants on the balcony in full equatorial sun. I water several times a week. They love their lives!

Thanks for all the great advice Summer. I have seen Coppertone Sansevieria advertised in UK that look similar but are labeled Star Canyon Granite. Are they totally different plants?

That's also what I'm asking myself. They look exactly similar, the same regarding their respective descriptions!

Oh my, I love this plant, the coloring is so pretty, and if I ever found one I would have to pick it up for sure. Dracaenas are just the neatest plants that are pretty easy to grow. Thank you again Summer, another wonderful video, see you tomorrow.

I like the earlier name :) Thanks for the useful video, I find that this particular variety is one of the slowest growing in my collection. In 2 years it has just grown one leaf !!!

The leaves are reminiscent of certain species of Madagscan/Malagasy Oeceoclades orchids. This Sansevieria/Dracena species is beautiful and I love the cryptic coloration. I got mine from Grigsby Cactus Gardens in California.

    Hi Summer,
I need to know where you got the information on the Sansevieria name change to Dracaena. My houseplant Club members say it's fake news....where's the evidence or proof it's been changed by actual botanist and not vloggers. Cheers thank you!

Hello and lot of thanks for the video! I'll be now the third person here to ask if they are the same as Sansevieria Star Canyon Granite? They look both exactly similar, the same regarding their respective descriptions!

I’ve always wanted a Sansevieria .... . . umm I mean Dracena collection and I’ve finally got serious about starting one.
Sorry, but calling it a Dracena collection seems really lame and doesn’t give me the same joy at all. I guess I’ll have to refer to it as my Snake Plant assemblage.

Haha! I'm exactly like you but few days ago at the garden center I felt in love with a Dracaena deremensis Warneckii (with white stripes on grayist/metallic green) and I am asking myself, well, should i buy more? Especially the one with the very dark green foliage, but still waiting.
