I can appreciate the goofier style of the dinosaurs for a kids movie, but the main problem was the environment was SO beautiful; individual leaves and pine needles, realistic looking water, THOSE LIGHTING AFFECTS! All of that clashed so badly with the style they chose for the characters themselves.

It's crazy to me the lack of research they made, especially as their OLDER ones, like Nemo, had so much accuracy involved, with small, amazing details.

From what I could gather, after working at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center, Disney-Pixar did come to the museum for scientific advise to make the dinosaurs the film. However, they did this by trying to interview my supervisor, Andrew Rossi. He described the event to be "awkward" since they only contacted his boss, who didn't give him the questions to prepare for the meeting. So, he was forced to improvise during the interview. In the end, while comparing what I've learned from Andrew and what I've seen in the movie, they didn't seem to use very much of his knowledge in it at all.

I don't get why they couldn't have been more anatomically accurate. I don't mind the bright colors, it's an animated kids' movie after all, but that doesn't mean they can't look more realistic.

One thing I really disliked about the Good Dinosaur is sure, the characters looked like dinosaurs, but other than that they weren't dinosaurs. And the human characters looked like humans, but other than that they were dogs. If you reshot the entire movie and changed nothing aside from turning Arlo human, and turning the boy into a dog, it'd be the exact same story. What you wind up with in the actual movie is just a really uncomfortable human boy. At the end it would have been far better if it turned out the boy was raised by wolves all along and had no 'real' family, and could potentially be heartwarming as arlo accepts the boy back into his own or something.. it was a good movie but just couldn't get past how the characters just weren't used to their fullest lol

I wish The Good Dinosaur had realism, like Disney's other Dinosaur movie (from 2000). Sure, there were some inaccuracies in that film, but it certainly wouldn't have made as good of an impact if Aladar (an Iguanodon) looked cartoony, or if the villain dino, the Carnosaurus looked cartoony.

If the asteroid never happened, maybe the large tyrannosaurs would continue for a short time until during the Paleocene/Eocene global forest stages they would be in decline. Meanwhile, a neotonous mutation allowed the juveniles of tyrannosaurs to reproduce while still in their young form and eventually created a new group of tyrannosaurs that were adapted to living in the global forests better than their larger adult versions of their kind. And by the time the forests shrunk by the end of the Eocene, the new smaller tyrannosaurs, being small to mid sized, speed and agility, intelligence and hunt a variety of prey, would be adapted enough to survive on the new open areas, and create new lines of tyrannosaurs.
That would be my idea of how tyrannosaurs would far in this alternate timeline.

Quite the piece of work you made here! While I did love the story and characters, the visual design of the dinosaurs themselves was a huge hindrance and stopped me from enjoying the film more than I did. Not just because of the inaccuracies, though I admit that was part of it. It was also because of how much they didn't fit in the world they were in. They were overly cartoony and extreme disproportional, and this made it hard to feel like you were in there with them. It was definitely a missed opportunity from Pixar, and quite the disappointment in that regard. Hopefully future dinosaur films will learn and not make the same mistake.

i feel like we can give them the benefit of the doubt for the theropod wrists. The bipedal dinosaurs (and even the pterosaurs) all seem very dexterous, so to give the idea of being both somewhat human-like and the idea that they can fully manipulate objects, they would have the ability to turn their talons whichever way they really want to, including the classic jurassic park style. the characters could likely turn their palms towards the sky (which they mighta in the movie but im too lazy to check) if they wanted.

Actually, _T. rex_ probably did have feathers - while, true, genes responsible for integument are very few, the same rule applies to Tyrannosauroidea that applies to every other clade; if basal members have a feature - e.g. _Yutyrannus huali_ and _Dilong paradoxus_ being preserved with feathering - it's likely that every member of the clade probably did have that trait, as it would be a 'synapomorphy', or a derived trait for that clade.
It's the same reason why all mammal species retain hair (even cetaceans; although there is little, as natural selection likely caused a reduction in cetacean hair growth, since hair could theoretically affect the swimming speed of these animals). The most basal mammal species all got hair from the first mammal, which probably got hair from one of it's ancestors, and ever since mammals have had hair.
So, what possible cause would there be for more derived tyrannosauroids and tyrannosaurids therefore to not have feathering? There would be little cause for natural selection to 'de-select' hair in the evolution of said species.
One might argue that larger tyrannosauroids/tyrannosaurids had a sufficient body mass so as to forego insulation from feathering; and that is true. What isn't true, however, is the typical misconception that these animals would overheat in their environments if they had feathering.
Feathers don't just insulate animals, but also cool them down; they effectively keep an insulatory layer of air around their bodies that keeps the dermal temperature and the body temperature constant; some air escapes, but very air gets in. So, in hot conditions, these animals are actually cooled because the layer of air their feathers trap in is cooler than the external environment. And in colder conditions, vice versa; that layer of air is warmer than the external environment, so keeps the dermal and body temperatures of the animals warmer.
It's something to that effect - I'm not sure on how it totally works, but a good example is _Casuarius sp._, which has black, long feathers - surely it'd overheat in it's tropical environment? It's a big bird... well, it doesn't. Nor did the moas, since they still retained pretty long feathers.
Anyway, that's why _T. rex_ probably did have feathers.

I like to imagine the hippo once had an equal apex predator to its apex herbivore reputation. Other than man, it really doesn't have that. If we found their bones millions of year from now, bearing in mind that most other land mammals are hairy, should we assume the hippo is hairy too? Sure, it has some hair, but it's not what we'd call "hairy." Same applies to dinosaurs.

To be fair wanting a bit more realism to it seems completely fine to me just considering that Disney had made "Dinosaur" a movie that was pretty accurate to what we knew at the time, or at least was really striving for realism... Then of course Pixar has previously shown great realism and cartoon mixes before with better accuracy to the original creature than is shown in this film. (good examples in my opinion can be finding Nemo and that Piper short film).

The Good Dinosaur wasn't just missing the things you mentioned in the video. I wanted to like this movie overall, but I found the world and the story... empty. Even with the amount of intricate detail the world provided with, and with the likable characters, the movie failed to give me the feeling that the world and story were alive and real.
I can compare this film with Finding Nemo, which in a way takes place in a large environment like The Good Dinosaur. However, Finding Nemo's advantage was that it gave me time to like the characters and learn about them. And by the end of the movie, they all came together after a long journey of reuniting Marlin with Nemo; a satisfying ending.
The Good Dinosaur had Arlo and Spot explore the alternative state of Wyoming while meeting new characters as well, but most of those characters were very two or even one dimensional; serving as just a plot device for comic relief or to help guide the characters along their journey. They could've used the environment, the one element in the ENTIRE movie that Pixar spent the most time on, to be a character itself for most of the movie. Instead, it was mostly used as a point of conflict for killing Arlo's dad, for the end of the film, for serving obstacles for Arlo and Spot, and mostly just to serve as eye candy for the audience.
Honestly, I believe that The Good Dinosaur may turn into one of Pixar's most overlooked film ever produced (which is slightly worse than having a reputation of being a bad movie, because at least people will at least remember it for being an actual movie that was produced) I'm not saying the movie was bad, it just wasn't as enjoyable as I expected it to be; being a Pixar film an all. I was filled with disappointment knowing that Pixar managed to make a film that would bore me (I enjoyed Cars 2 more, and that film is considered one of Pixar's worst films ever!).
And like I said, it's not a bad movie. I think it serves more as a graphical experiment for Pixar. After all, COCO came after and that film is a masterpiece

I agree with your proposition. What I am really put off by with this movie, which I could not watch all the way through, was the ridiculous caricatures used for all the creatures. To claim that this is done to make them more appealing to children does children a disservice.

(Translation: Can you please do a video reimagining Jurassic Park/Jurassic World's dinosaurs accurately? I would really like to see Owen Grady surrounded by accurate versions of his raptor squad.) I imagine Blue with teal/colbalt blue feathers (It's in the name), Delta with dull purple feathers, Echo with dark green feathers, and Charlie with either orange or goldish yellow feathers.

Also I loved the idea of humans and dinos coexisting

i'm not sure why people keep complaining about the position of the claws of the dinosaurs in this film. a big part of humanization of animals is hand movement. alot of human gestures are universal. there are alot of things wrong with how they dipicted the dinosaurs in this film. but seeing as it is suposed to be a cartoon with sentient dinosaurs of a cartoonish nature, the claws are really something you need to have.

      The Doodling Dino
for the quadruped charecters they have more facial expressions, the bipedal charecters have some interesting expressions useing their arms. when the rexes move in this film they are suposed to look like cowboys on horses, the legs have that look, the arms look more like they are holding reigns. your ideal about them have'nt hoofshaped prints was an amazing idea. i think the apato in this film was WAY too elephant like. personally the apato in the land before time seemed more realistic.

    • @TheDoodlingDino
      @TheDoodlingDino  8 лет назад +10

+ValforWing Thanks for your thoughts! Absolutely, there was some excellent anthropomorphization that went on in the film. I wouldn't change that. Having grown up in Wyoming surrounded by cowboys, I loved the treatment of the rexes; they nailed it. However, correct arm articulation would not have harmed that look. In fact I think it would have enhanced it. Tyrannosaurs aren't the only ones who don't hold their arms like bunny rabbits. Cowboys don't either. They hold their elbows out, palms facing in, often with one thumb in a pocket. This position corresponds well to the way T. rex actually held its arms. A little more research, or hiring an expert to consult on the designs, would have helped the look in my opinion.

It's nice to see more people that actually care, and want dinosaur movies to be much more accurate/entertaining, than just blatant monster movies or ripoffs just taking notes from Jurassic Park! Which I've seen many, many of! As for this movie! I though it was just okay (6 out of 10)! But, it could've been much better, and Pixar should've use both the environment, as well as the many of the new things, we now know about dinosaurs/other prehistoric animals to the movie benefit!

I think the biggest issue with the dinosaur design was that pixar knew they had to either do them super hyper-realistic to match the scenery, or make them the opposite - cartoony characters and designed purposely to contrast the environment. Maybe anything in between would look too much like the uncanny valley, or it would look like they tried to make the dinosaurs look realistic, but weren't able to. Sorta like the dinosaurs from 2001 Dinosaur.
Also, they wanted the dinosaurs to be characters little kids can relate to. Making them hyper-realistic would run the risk of making Arlo unrelatable. And we all know how that new Walking With Dinosaurs movie went, where they tried to make realistic dinosaurs be childish characters, and I think Pixar really wanted to avoid that happening. Thus, they went with the much more cartoony, characterized, child-friendly (and very marketable) designs.
That said, it would have been nice if the creatures were a bit more interesting. Some extra scutes and ridges would have been at least cooler than all that unscientific, round, smoothness that was going on.

The main reason I can never like the Good Dinosaur is because they decided to go for the simplified versions of epic dinosaurs. When I was little, I saw realistic dinosaurs that were badass, so it was sad for me to see this movie make them into something so, toy-like. That’s what I thought when I saw the trailer for the movie. They open with a shot of beautiful realistic dinos and I got excited; until they showed off Arlo. All my interest in the movie was lost in a snap. What’s the point in making those beginning dinos so awesome, then all of a sudden bring in play-dough? I know it’s meant for kids but like I said, back in the early 2000’s and 90’s they had dinos that were real-looking and that made them so much cooler. It just made the movie feel like it was only made to sell toys to gripey little kids

If the asteroid didn't hit the Earth, the Dinosaurs would've already been extinct, due to volcanic eruptions, sea levels, and how the Earth had crazy temperatures.

Le Doggo if the volcanic eruptions were that bad, moths (being an indicator species that would be extremely sensitive to such air pollution ) would have went extinct as well. As for sea levels and crazy temperatures, the dinosaurs were insanely adaptable as a whole. They would have lived on and evolved to new and different forms.

    • @InvaderTool
      @InvaderTool 6 лет назад +2

Pydros Music I would agree with that first statement with the exception of maybe sauropods due to lack of any real evidence in their evolutionary relatives, but your second point is a bit more risky. I think most of the marine reptiles lived more like whales or dolphins nowadays rather than sealions or walruses, mostly making the sort of amphibian lifestyle slightly harder. Would be cool to find something that fit that niche though.
