How Building This Bird Feeder Saved Me Money

- I realized that I was literally throwing money on the ground by putting out bird seed that was mostly going to waste, sitting on the ground. So, I had the bright idea to build myself a nice-sized bird feeder! Watch this video to see how I built it.
UPDATE: Plans to build this feeder are now available! Use this link to access the plans: ivebeenthinkin...
Some of the tools I used to build this feeder:
Here are some of the tools I used in this video:
This is My Woodworking Shirt - amzn.to/2PaG3Er
EZ Smart Universal Edge Guide - amzn.to/2Dk86v8
Hitachi KM12VC 2-1/4 HP Router Kit - amzn.to/2DjyNQv
INCRA Mast-R-Lift II Router Lift - amzn.to/2GlgwFP
INCRA Table Saw Fence System - amzn.to/2Gg6UvK
GRR-RIPPER 3D Push Blocks - amzn.to/2FsDkWF
Roto-Zip Variable Speed Spiral Saw - amzn.to/2HoUwsK
Dumbbell plate: amzn.to/2pd1mel
Your arsenal of tools is by far the best part of this video.
Thanks, Clint! That was the whole point of the video.
I really like the roof. A very clever idea I've never seen anyone else do before...
Thanks, joeredman9354! Yes, it was fun to come up with a design for the roof on this feeder.
you 've got all it takes for making a piece of art talent equiped with most types of facilities ❤
Hayy looks good , do you have the template, blue prints to make one .
I used to have them available for download. If you still want a copy, send me an e-mail at mikew0001@hotmail.com.
Excellent bird feeder, are the joints still holding together?
Thanks, Matt! The feeder has since been retired, but it still sits outside and the joints are still holding up after all these years. Wish I could post a picture of it here in the comments.
EXCELLENT WORK, IMPRACTICAL FOR PIGEONS
Thanks, guppy Bratislava!
What is the deal on your tablesaw fence? Looks very interesting !
It’s an Incra fence. Expensive but good!
Thank you sir .
U saved my daily time. As in near by jungal we ( me and my wife)put grains daily to 3 to 4 places.
Is there any thing to give water to birds.
Is there something wrong with the link to the build plans? I can't get it to open.
Yes, I found it not worthwhile to support a web site that hardly gets any visits. Inflation and all, you know? If you want a copy of the plans, shoot me an e-mail at mikew0001@hotmail.com
hi great bird feeder, may i have plans for it please.
Hi Paul, sorry for my very late ⏳ reply! Thanks for your compliment! If you’re still interested in the plans, they are available from my web site ivebeenthinking.net. If you’ve already moved on to other things, maybe it’s been long enough you are ready to get back to this! 😃
Hi, I am trying to buy the plans but I getting a message: This store isn't taking orders right now. Can you share the plans please?
Hello Celso, thanks for your interest in the plans for this product. Please try again. You should now be able to access them.
Very nice job this is one hell of a big feeder I will be building one like this very very soon thanx
Burn-in your initials/signature on one of the panels (and drill some holes on the bottom plate for rain, as someone else has mentioned) and it would be pretty darn perfect! Awesome craftsmanship!
Thank you, charismatic 1!
Lucky birds
Excellent work
My self from INDIA
I think the birds will admire the work that you’ve put into this
Glue on butt joints doesn't work very long inside, much less outside. You have to have some sort of joinery or mechanical fasteners if you expect it to last.
I agree. Please Let me know what you think about my feeder design : ruclips.net/video/tKczbfjpLos/видео.html

May I suggest putting a couple small drain holes on the bottom plate for the rain that does get in there.
Do you have any plans on your table sled
No sorry.
Beautiful bird feeder ! How can I get the plan to build that?
It’s on my web site ivebeenthinking.net
@@IveBeenThinkingWorkshop I downloaded it . Thanks !
Your skills and tools far surpass mine!! Great video!
Since it has been sometime since you have built this. How is the non finished wood holding up? How long has it been outside now?
The best bird feeder I have seen. Great work!
Now all I need is a $10,000 dollar workshop.....
:D yes
SPOT ON! You saved me the trouble, that was going to be my comment about the title. I buy about ten thousand dollars worth of power tools to save a few dollars for bird seed. If I keep saving money like this I will need to sell the house. Real good glue if it does not fall apart. Looks pretty........ maybe some of the ladies will by one for the husbands for Christmas.
you could NOT afford the wood. Maybe pallet wood.
Keith Chamberlain true
What you do need:
Circular saw or hand saw.
Jig saw or hand powered version.
Belt sander or hand planer.
Vibrating sander or sand paper.
Carpenter's triangle.
Dremnel/detail grinder or sandpaper and dowel.
Drill & drill bits
Your choice of wood sealer, glue and non-rust fasteners as I agree that glue only is a bad idea.
Optional:
Jigs to line up holes
Pocket hole jig
Mitre box
Avoid decorative cuts like the ones under the "ridge cap" (which is just a piece of ready made molding) and the forty-fives on the base and base trim.
This feeder is beautiful. I work at a NJ Audubon Center. I have a volunteer with a woodshop who has graciously offered to build feeders for us. All I need to do is give her the plans. Do you have plans for this feeder that you are willing to share?
Thank you for your comments, Anne! If you’re still interested, the plans will be posted very soon, hopefully in the next couple of days.
Plans are now up on my web site! Thank you for your interest!
I've Been Thinking Workshop thank you
Sensacional. Trabalho de profissional. Parabéns! (Sensational. Professional work. Congratulations!)
Thank you, Rodrigo! Glad you liked it!
A GOOD CRAFTSMAN FOR SURE. GOOD JOB
Thanks, bear9923!
On the parts diagram the ends 3L& 3R the width is 9 15/16 but on the sheet with the end drawings it shows that width to be 10 3/32. Which is the correct dimension?
Hi Larry, wow, great catch! The reason for the difference is the parts diagram was dimensioned to the cut off corner of the part while the end drawing was dimensioned to the imaginary corner that is not present. I recommend you start by cutting the material to the larger dimension and then cut off the corner to the finished dimension.
Was looking for a big hopper idea for a bird feeder. Really nice work.Assume it is mounted on a post?
Please Let me know what you think about my feeder design : ruclips.net/video/tKczbfjpLos/видео.html
Looks nice. Very good job on the design. I like the dowel hinge system.

A bit bigger and could be my cabin in the mountains. Great job. :)
Thanks, Ton! I know it’s on the big side. You should see how many birds we get!
De lujo !
Wow ... Amazing...great to watch !!! Lucky Birds !!
lovely bird feeder the best I've seen good craftsman well made l
My gosh, you do beautiful work. Nice video too!
Very nicely done, i would have lapped the roof decking, the white glue will quickly de-lament you may want to try original Gorilla glue outside holds up much better.
Thank you for the comment and compliment, Greg! Sorry it took me so long to reply.

Are you selling them
Um, hadn’t thought about it. Let me see what I would need to charge.
The money shot would have been actual birds feeding. Also I think I will make my base bigger to accommodate more birds. Thanks for posting ✌🏼
Did you paint or varnish it so the elements didn't ruin it fast. It's a really nice bird feeder. I'd hate to see it get ruined in 1 or 2 season from the rain, etc because it was left as natural wood.
Hi Laura, thanks for your comments. No I did not apply a finish. The birdies don’t like finish flavor added to their bird seed. The wood I used, “Red Grandis,” is supposedly weather resistant. It’s held up pretty well so far.
As soon as a saw all this equipment I knew this wasnt for me
That's badass but I dont have all the stuff to do this! Lol
Thanks, Cody! I’ll bet you can figure out a way using what you’ve got.
Great workmanship 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Oh ya, the 39 thumbs down -- go get some help -- psychiatric
How's the roof holding up?
The roof is doing fine. A couple of the boards warped some, but are still staying attached.
very very nice work...........helps to have nice tools to do also
Hope you plan to do some more securing other then just glue... heat, cold, expansion and contraction will blow those glue joints in no time.
Impressive work shop
Very impressive work!thank you.
Que peça única! Maravilhosa! Parabéns!
Love the cross cut sled!!! Did you buy it? The problem with making a cross cut sled is that you first *need* a cross cut sled...
Please Let me know what you think about my feeder design : ruclips.net/video/tKczbfjpLos/видео.html
Awesome craftsmanship!
Winner of a video, I been tryin to find out about "how to make a birdhouse with popsicle sticks" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Daniliana Birdfly Babar - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my co-worker got excellent success with it.
Nice size feeder my friend! Later, Murph
Nice shop, nice birdfeeder but I wonder how long it will last only being held together with Elmer's Glue... seems like a few screws are in order to prevent warping etc... other than that, some really good woodworking...

nice work Sir
Nice build, shame about all the negative comments about your tools, perhaps their just jealous, and could not see past the fact that most of it could be built with basic hand tools. Each to their own. How did it turn out in the end,? Did the birds use it? Or did you have to do any mods??
Why not use one piece of wood rather than glue pieces together. Is there any nails or fasteners holding it together besides glue?
Moisture and outdoor temperatures might tear it apart in one season.
A bird feeder made of one piece of wood? Now that would be impressive!
Verry nice feeder Thanks for video gr from holland.
Nice feeder. Are you planning on putting any kind of finish on it?
WoodRodent, no, I’m told that birds don’t care for finished wood.
It'll have a black and white finish soon enough.
You make me want to have a neighbor like you
Frank, instead of wanting a neighbor like him, why not you be that neighbor you’re referring to?
If I'm going to build a feeder like the one he built Is going to be for me to eat peanuts & pumpkin seeds
That’s a great idea, julio rivera! 🥜
tryed to order pattern but said not taking orders now closed i guest
If you want to give me your e-mail address, I can send you a copy.
other than finding some at a yard sale (no luck) where can someone find weights like that cheap?
I got mine from Amazon. Their prices can vary. I put a link in the description to a plate that is currently reasonably priced.
Check the free section on Craigslist periodically. I've seen people getting rid of weights numerous times.
Lol, yeah awesome to watch. Now how can I replicate this with a rusty hammer some 6 inch nails and an old pallet 🤪
Well, you sure know how to throw up a challenge!
Where can I find the plans for this? It sure would be nice to see a cut list or something. Nice birdhouse.
I have plans available. Please Let me know what you think about my feeder design : ruclips.net/video/tKczbfjpLos/видео.html
Ok the form factor is similar to most other bird feeders of that type. So what you really mean is that, using a bird feeder created less waste than throwing seed on the ground. It's great that you built one, which looks really nice, but the basic message is to use a bird feeder. Not that a particular design of a bird feeder that you did, was better than one you had before (in this case, didn't use one before). Thank you for the video!
Industry machines to make a bird feeder?
Come on!
Have not seen that many new tools since my last trip to h.d.
Dude how many people have the tools you have? Regular diy dude!
Crazy cool workshop! Please don’t assume we have that type of equipment!
My hubby says he can buy lots of bird houses for the price of all the wormshop tools.
Hi Michelle, some people like to build birdhouses, other people like to buy them. I guess that’s what makes the world 🌎 go round.
BTW, the project I built is a bird feeder, not a bird house. Just sayin’.
You make some money just selling the plans!!
Nice build, but far too many pieces glued together. Rain, snow, sleet & ice all Winter long will quickly cause parts to move about. The fewer glued up joints in bird houses & feeders, the better. Plus, the feed hopper is just too large. A squirrel family or bear or raccoon can get up there & easily scatter 5-10 lbs of seed. It’s a nice feeder, and good wood working, but not a good feeder.
Good points, Mark!
Great job! Are you going to finish/seal it?
Thanks, Ali! I’ve had this feeder outside as you see it in the video for about 3 months now and it’s going strong.
Alan Arkin's younger brother makes a bird feeder.
I need to go meet Alan Arkin and ask him if he’s missing a brother...
Squirrels?
Yeah the squires will love it.
excelent!!! can i get one tooooo???? sml.
Nice feeder but the grey squirrels will destroy it
This video should be called how I bought 100.000$ carpentry craft equipment
Now if I had included a bunch of shots showing me shopping for tools, I would agree with you, but I really tried to focus on the bird feeder in this video.
Nice but not practical and expensive at that. I don't see it lasting for more than a year or two. There isn't very many people that has all of those tools in they're average shop anyway.
Thanks, Mr. C! 👍🏽
Save money for what to feed birds????
You can use the💰savings to buy whatever makes you happy…😄
Great vid, but why do people have to tell you every machine and tool they are using when it's obvious, (sorry)
Good point, Brian! Call me King of Obvious?
I don’t mind that he tells what tools he is using. That is great for new woodworkers. Not everything is obvious. I have friends and relatives who could not tell you what a table saw is let alone a band saw or a planer. Keep up the good work.
@@shadowmaster8122 You are right! Apart from knowing the names of the machines, calling out the name/type of machine used helps the beginners to make the association between the type of wood cut and the machine used.
