Great work. 📐A vid on different box ends would be a good one, but probably 6 hours long.
Sometimes when hitting in the poly-tops they’ll get stuck, bend or the tops will come off. If you just put your claw hammer onto the plastic to pull them out you may dent the plastic. Get your handsaw and lay it flat onto the board and lever onto that to remove the nails. No damage.

Great vid. I usually use a combi square for setting my pins out. 40 mm off the front edge and 50mm off the wall. Works for me

Countersink screws on the edges of your box ends then cover with your corner trim. No poly pins on show on the box ends looks a lot cleaner finish. Proper job tho lads

Hi James why don’t you try fitting a Universal trim to back edge of soffit, slide the soffit in then fix front edge with stainless cladding pins then lip on fascia will cover Looks a lot neater pal

Had great fun doing that job! Thankfully James didn’t get me using the superglue, I’d of stuck my fingers to the fascia 🙃
I usually end up with my fingers stuck to mdf skirting every time I use that glue. Nice job by the way. 👌

box ends you buy 400/600 wide cap-it board to make them. square cut the barge board and the corner/joiners fit without joins in them
Yes but you then have that ugly plastic box sticking out and it looks less like a traditional barge board end.
@@SkillBuilder barge boards where I come from are usually wide enough to cover the ends of the fascia/soffit and we only put box ends on now as you can,t get the nice wide timber to cover them now plus cost and people want cheap easy no maintenance houses as they don,t see the roofline so out of sight out of mind
Generally take the undercloak up to top of fascia at eaves to avoid the mortar to the verge ending up behind the fascia. This would then mean the membrane below the under cloak would be correctly detailed and allow any rainwater that gets beyond the tiles to be carried over the fascia rather than behind. Find low modulus silicone To stick the corners and joiners. Thanks for the series been enjoyable

Nice job 👍 I would of did the box ends slightly differently I don’t think there is any right or wrong way of doing them and it all looked good when it was finished ✅. I totally agree with James on the nail symmetry there is nothing worse than looking at a job and all the nail spacings are wonky. James is also right about ripping off rotten facias capping them just hide the problem and bite you in the ass later down the line. Do the job properly 👍

If you don't kill the polytops all the way you can pull the plastic of after without it catching round the head. Then give them a couple of taps after
Don't leave that plastic on too late long otherwise you'll never get it off.
18v grinder works a treat of cutting the trims
Would you use a metal cutting disc? I’m covering window boards with pvc soon and would love to use the grinder instead of hand sawing.
@@lauramccoy1621 just the grinder with a metal blade for cutting the jointers / corner trims. I would use a chopsaw to mirtre the cuts on a window cill with a fine tooth handsaw or jigsaw to finish the cuts
Remember to fit some swift and sparrow boxes (so easy, open ended ply box pinned together and placed above the soffit and a 65x30mm slot on the soffit board next to the wall)
Our bird species are in a shockingly rapid decline much to the fault of pvc fascias and soffits. As a joiner it's a must for me on every job. Costs nothing and makes a difference.

Doug. I have lots of nooks and crannies in my house for birds and for 20 years I have watched them return. I often wonder how that happens, are they the offspring of the ones who had the nesting boxes previously? 2019 the blue tits failed to turn up and I wondered what was wrong. Was this an omen? Happily they came back this year, perhaps they just needed a change of scenery.
@@SkillBuilder great! Blue tits are very unpredictable I find, and are very territorial. It could be that the pair moved on or came to the end of their lives and then didn't return. Usually others will have jostled for the nest site previously and will move in. House sparrows however are colonial and like to live together.
Swifts are very different, from leaving the nest they fly back and forth to South Africa each year only ever landing to lay eggs! It's known that if the nest area entrance changes by as much as 50mm they will return and not find it, as their memory of the location is completely fixed. If the nest site changes the pair most likely won't breed again. Super interesting birds.

Question about the expansion of the plastics, if you are rigidly nailing along the length, does that mean it is only allowing expansion between the last fixing and the expansion gap?

I had a repair/replacement on a corner piece of UPVC soffit board recently, there was an entire length of adjacent ‘sagging’ soffit from the gutter to the apex of the roof (about 8 metres in length) held in place with two of those nylon head nails.
Very frustrating knowing that there are companies and workers out there performing this type of job who don’t give a shit about workmanship or standards.
If all tradesmen had the same attention to detail as the guys in these tutorials it would be great.
Lots of highly 'mobile' companies around doing this work for peanuts. Doubt that workmanship is top of their list of priorities.

I only use fascia stuff on new build personally, I’m not sure about the barge board detail where it meets the eaves, I do mine a little different, each to their own.

Mark the centres with a square then lay polytop flat with the top on the lip of the UPVC. Stand it upright and they will all be in line the length of the nail from the edge
Hang on, if you glue one side of the joining strip to the soffit and you’ve got a 5mm exp gap each side then surely you’ve only got a 5mm exp gap as all you’ve done is glue an extra bit on to the soffit. You’d have to glue one edge hard up to the joining strip and leave 10mm on the other side to get a 10mm exp gap or fix the joining strip to the osb and slide the soffits into it 5mm short on each side?
Yeah, I didn’t explain that properly. The soffits joining strip is loose but the fascia joining strip it glued tight to one side of the gap which still leaves 10mm.
Is that a hole between the corner jointing piece and the mortar on the cloaking I can see at point 25.13 on the video ? I'm sure James will deal with it, another cracking looking job !
Do u silicone the nr the wall, ie soffits to wall so keeps wasps out? Can i do soffits only, cash flow, and had wasps nest, ive on eves end some sofits have bowed, not sure if think ply or cement board, soffits under fascias front and back maybe cement board, seem very hard, 60yr old council house facias seem solid, great vid
We normally pull the heads of the pins put one tight up against block work which render will cover and hide one under the lip of the fascia hate seeing pins on soffit
Buy the topless pins there cheaper. 👍
when you use a joint strip between 2 fascia capping boards, you mentioned to leave 10mm gap for expansion, so would you bond the joint strip to just one of the fascia boards so the other can slide?

One query ... The ends of the boards have clearance left for expansion ... but what about the fixing nails into the rafters?
Same here. PVC siding have slutted holes for nails to allow expansion between nail.
Also cutting with a saw produces millions of particles of micro plastics, if you're using capping board almost all the cutting can be done with a sharp Stanley knife. Reducing pollution and saving time on clean up.

Ahh how could I have forgotten! It must’ve been getting up at 3am with the dog or the super hot day that we had that made me forget🤔 never mind there’s plenty more ForgeFast action on this project to come and we are really enjoying using them. I know we have a bit of a laugh with it but they are genuinely quality screws 👍

Guys just use a starter trim (j trim) it’s so much easier and neater without poly tops to the soffit boards!
When replacing soffit and facia boards is it advisable to use an eaves protection system and over facia ventilation rather than venting the soffit ? (Love the videos by the way)
I always fit the soffit before the roof is battened.
That way you can run the soffit on top of the brickwork and pinch it with battens fixed to the side of the rafters.
Then I dehead some polytops and fix alont the outer edge (which will be hidden by the fascia lip.
Result... No visable fixings in the soffit!
we've just had new upvc fascias fitted. The problem is with the overlap between our fascias and the neighbour's timber fascia, as it does not perfectly line up. The roofers sealed the gap with silicone filler. It means it's not a smooth joint, And our fascia sticks out a little bit, the house is a semi . How would you do this? obviously they cant redo the job now. So it's ok for it to be done this way?
Just go along with a roofing square for your spacing 2mm pilot your 2 holes then continue like that then remove the plastic

Always finish the bird box 100mm past the block work on the return wall.
Why didn’t you get a meter of 450mm box end board. And a double ended corner joiner that are longer? The box end looked amateurish with soffit and a joined corner, shame as the rest was going along nicely…

yes the vapour permeable membrane coupled with the vapour barrier internally means there is no need for ventilation above the Celotex.

We've gotten so fed up with those shitty plastic capped pins bending or the cap getting mashed up or breaking off that we pilot most of the holes now as we go along with a dead thin hss. We find it helps but it isn't foolproof. I'm not sure but I reckon the pins are 2/2.5mm in diameter. We use a 1/1.5 mm pilot. Even with a pilot hole they'll buckle and bend if anywhere near a knot. We also use ply/Osb strips and capping boards instead of full thickness fascia so that we can set out the gutter clips to miss any fascia pins but still get a decent fixing.

Never seen it done like that before on a new build? Normally run the soffit over the brickwork? And please use box end corners instead of piecing it up 🙈 other than that I like your work haha
Thanks. On new builds the soffit does generally go on over the brickwork, however, this is an extension so we had to copy the existing. As for box end corners, I’m just not a fan and I think that this way looks more traditional but that’s just me.

Have you ever had any negative feedback from using the CA glue on the plastic?
I did some work for a small local builder and used CA glue for corners and he complained that it stained the plastics yellow?
Have you ever tried using a activator pen with the standard glue , ive found that it stops the discolouring as the spray activator seems to stain the plastic especially in warm weather

Could do depends how much you use I think. It sticks like sh1t so if you let the activator dry then apply a minimal amount of glue to the joint/corner strip nothing should leak through?
I find it’s not the leaking through it’s the slight overspray of mist your always gonna get with the can where as the pen also lets you be more accurate with the area in which you need full contact , also I’ve found it depends on the manufacturers plastic and spray it’s never seen me wrong yet,
I had my roof done and facias, they put em on the old timber, I can tell because the screws aren't pulling it in at some points. Difference between B******ds and conscientious chaps like James & Ian I guess.
When it rains both box ends of my roof drip with water, is this normal? Thought it might be water running down the soffit
Probably water running down the under side of the bargeboards until it meets the box end join then dripping off.

PVC fasia over the old wooden one is sometimes all the customer can afford. It's not the best option, but I wouldn't call it a cowboy job if the tradesman knows the old fascia is in decent condition, with polypins and screwing the guttering brackets on the fascia should last a very long time

I was advised by the building inspector to fit vented soffit boards, the slotted stuff, so I did as advised. Now my loft is full of clustsr flies and wasps, pain in the arse, plus what was a clean white under tile membrane is now crappy dirty from what the flies leave behind. I regret listening to the building inspector now. Does anybody know if there has been invented a clip on insect screen gadget to stop the insect ingress? I have seen rolls of strip but there is no way to neatly attach it over the slots.

How can the plastic expand if it’s fixed every 400mm ?.
The gutter will surely hide any potential buckling haha! Not sure about the soffit, I always predrill a larger diameter hole than the nail shank and the pan head keeps it in place while leaving the panel to move around.
The nails will allow the movement as the plastic will likely cut into them I'd imagine? It is confusing as the joining strip is glued, so it will move at the same rate as the board it's glued to?
@@thedeathcake you are correct, the plastic will just cut into the nails. As for the joining strips, the ones on the soffit are loose so there’s no worries there and the ones on the fascia are glued tight to one side of the gap so will move with that side only.

You're right, it is superglue, but the activator isn't water.
.Barge Board /Box Ends ..Take your pick ...As a young lad working with the local council we had to renew a number of these box ends usually done off a ladder. As the council works department found it difficult to organise anything there was times we had no ladder. Our boss sent us round to this lady who was giving "Our Boss" loads of earache about “The Birds" coming in and the racket in her attic we would be along as soon as a ladder was available. The chap I was working with Frank Took the lead knocked on the ladies door and said we are here about "The Birds" coming in to your attic. Yes! the lady replied are you here to fix it ?...ERR no said Frank and proceeded to lay down this long cock and bull story with regards the type of birds that she had in her Loft/Attic. Frank says to the lady we need to get the local "Ornithologist" (Bird Expert to you and me) to study the rare birds she had in her attic. What kind of birds are they asked the lady ? ...Frank said does it sound like you have "Morris Dancers" in your attic first thing in the morning about dawn chorus?. Yes the lady replied. Well it could be the long eared blue tail feathered very rare Argentinian Chaffinches. The lady was fair chuffed she had this flock rare birds in her attic. We walked away from the ladies front door she seemed happy “We had completed our mission”....About 2 weeks later the boss came to see me and Frank he was not a happy camper The boss had sent another two Carpenters with a Ladder to fix her Box Ends and she would not let them near her house. She was waiting for the "Ornithologist" to study her rare Birds….Ah to be young happy days….Would have liked to be there when the boss explained there are no such birds.

Always do my box ends the same as James apart from we get the long corner trims instead of joining a small piece. kite box ends look crap
I hate white plastic. I've never understood why people like it. Well, apart from cost. It makes me feel like a cowboy when I install it as I just want to get the job done, invoice in and bugger off afterwards.
It looks grubby as fuck within a month and eventually yellows in the sun. The grey stuff is alot better, even the brown 'wood effect' is better. But still... fuck plastics. If i ever get to build my own house I'd rather go with a traditional wooden fascia and have the bugger treated/painted once a year.
