Replacing the earpiece helped a bit. Made it less, but not gone. Thanks This is a good point: They only crackle when Noise Canceling or Transparency is On. Turn them off, turns off the microphone, no more crackling. So that's the problem.
Movement, especially my jaw (anything that wiggles my ears) causes the problem.
Also when I do the Fit test it always fails, both ears. Maybe the freeway in the distance is a problem.
Updating the firmware is a bit of that Tech Voodoo nonsense that isn't just something we learn and live with, it's nonsense that changes every couple of years so help tips (especially the menus) become obsolete. What I miss most about Steve Jobs is I know he'd have thrown a snit and ordered this kind of stuff to be fixed. And.... it did absolutely nothing. No update.
I don't think I'll ever buy another set of AirPods, too expensive, no lanyard. Like noise cancellation, but there are cheaper options. It also automatically pairs with my MacBook Pro even though I absolutely never want it to do this. Instead of connecting to my iPhone and the Audiobook I've been listening to, it'll turn on some random video on my MacBook in the next room. Incredibly stupid and annoying. For $150 no excuse. And don't we often wonder, gee Apple just came out with some new stuff and now my older stuff is acting funky.....

I fixed mine by cleaning them with Rubbing alcohol then blowing them with a not too powerful airline. Now they work PERFECTLY 👍
its a software problem that Apple refuses to admit.
Every movement is interpreted by software as the noise that needs to be cancelled. So the airpod pro fires up counter sound waves to cancel the noise. That is the crackling noise that we hear.
Hence, turning off the noise cancellation fixes the problem. But hey, you paid extra 100$ for this feature!. SO fucking annoying
