I will say that there's also a strong tradition of restaurants offering takeout boxes for the food you don't finish. One dine-out meal often gives me two extra dinners, lowering the already often low price of the meal. Less so for quick drive thru like burgers and fries, though.
I wish they’d redo that video but with local restaurants because that’s where you’d really see the difference. Like you go to an Italian place and what does a Spaghetti and Meatballs look like in US and UK because US tends to do a size where you are expected to have leftovers for lunch the next day.
2:11 you also have to remember that the U.S. drinks will come with a FULL container of ice cubes... that takes away from the volume of drink.. so it might end up the same OR SMALLER in the amount of liquid drink if the ice were removed than the U.K. drinks... AND you get free refills while you're still in the building.... either you ask for the refill at the counter, OR (what is common now) they will have a soda machine in the lobby with multiple soda selection that you just refill yourself as much as you want... until you leave the building...

Not for nothing, who came up with those UK KFC numbers? American buckets are based on the broke down bird. A chicken has 8 pieces, 2 breasts, 2 wings, 2 thighs, and 2 legs. That’s why our portions are 1/4, 1/2, or whole, and even if you get all dark or white meat they’re still in quarter, half, and whole. What is up with that?

Yes, our portion sizes are massive. Can't argue that. However, with the drinks, unless I've been lied to, you over in the UK don't use as much ice as we do. Those cups are filled to the top with ice and then the liquid is added. I hear over there, y'all use a normal amount of ice.
Italian...here have some! Ok maybe a little. A full plate piled 3 inches high and you say American portions are big? You go into deep negotiations with every italian grandma. It doesnt matter if you a full dinner an hour ago, youre eating again!!
Size in the US can vary, even within locations of the same chain. We have 2 Dairy Queens near. The small drink at one is not the same size as the small drink at the other. Our Subway offers cookies in quantities of 1, 6 or 12. The 12 is just two 6s.
12:40 Pizza sizes can vary by restaurant/franchise. A large may be 14 inches at one franchise and may be 16 inches at a one-off mom&pop pizza place. "Extra large" is often called Jumbo size. The largest pizza I've ordered or been served is 20 inches across.
@@Ulnyx Just to be clear, I was only talking about round pizzas. I don't typically order rectangular pizzas unless I have to. An 18×24 inch pizza is 432 in². Most round large pizzas are 14 inches across, which is 154 in². That makes The Beast 2.8× the size. A 16 inch large is 201 in². An 18 inch large is 254.5 in². A 20 inch large is 314 in². Dang, some pizza sounds good right now.
Here in the US the Big Mac is actually far smaller than it use to be and outside major chains the biggest pizza is a stadium size ranging from 3 - 4 feet depending on the restaurant.
UK McDonald's sizes are what ours used to be years ago before everything started to be 'supersized'. The Subway 3 ft. sandwich we used to order for the band or football team in school.
We used to have a Pizza Pipeline not too far from my house and sometimes I'd walk over and get a slice. Their crust was so good!! Brushed with butter or buttery sauce and herbs, all crispy… 🤤
My friends and I order two 6 foot subs for the Superbowl every year from a deli near my friend's home. And we eat them both every year. No leftovers ever!
I regularly got the double quarter pounder, yes a half pound of beef, and add bacon. There was a burger with 3 patties, so 3/4 of and pound and of course you could add bacon.
You should do more reactions to the Food Wars videos. - The US vs UK do a lot of fast food restaurants, they also do snacks, drinks and other meals. They also did a foreign exchange series (where both hosts try the other countries fast foods) and also Food Tours (where one host takes the other host to try different foods in their country). - The other videos include US vs. China, US vs Japan, US vs India, US vs Italy, US vs Australia, and US vs Mexico.
thing with BK was a small used to be the medium, the medium used to be the large, and the large used to be King sized. the old small Is just called the Value size.
They are scooped in and there are so many variables employee, amount in holder, whether its freshly fried and added too or the remnants of whats left .
if you get a pizza from Costco or Sam's Club, they are 18 inches in diameter and usually taste as good or better than the 'pizza joints' pizzas, which are usually 14 inches in diameter....
I'm putting on my old man pants and Dad hat, but waaaayyyyy back in the 1990s, I ran 2 Subway locations here in Vegas (all 37 at the time owned by, I shit you not, a couple named Don & Donna...), and I HATED party sub orders; they were either 4 foot or 6 Fing foot long sandos. Having to proof and merge those damn things SUCKED!
McDonald's has an exclusive deal with Coke to make them a special recipe. Their Coke recipe has 15% less sugar. A KFC 8 piece, aka a whole chicken, is $35.00! A large size Whopper meal is $17.00+! You can't feed two adults for less than $35.00 at any fast food places in Seattle.
I'm assuming some of the large us sizes has to do with getting events to buy large orders like a school or a sporting event. There are probably more chances for the large group orders and they are oriented on getting those during certain times of year.
The O.G. Burger King is from my home town of Mattoon Illinois, the franchise opened a few years later and sued the O.G. to change their name, they lost. The O.G. won a million dollars and no other Burger Kings could be opened within 40 miles. Since then Burger King has offered a million dollars to open within that 40 miles and the O.G. refund
Years ago, the UK sizes used to be the US sizes. Yes, our small drinks used to be the same size as yours, then they change to larger cup sizes, but just add more ice cubes so still getting the same amount of beverage...it just ends up being waterdowned.
portion sizes are why there is more obesity in the USA, but it's also a good problem to have; it means most of your people can afford a lot of food, and live relatively sedentary lifestyles, that is to say, they don't have to do back breaking labor for a living. Although it does depend on the state. Here in California our obesity rate is only 27%, which is roughly the same as France. It's because we're educated and knowledgeable and health conscious, so we know to work out, to mitigate the large portions. In fact, my specific area in California, Santa Clara County, more famously known as "Silicon Valley", has an obesity rate of 18%. Hawaii has even lower obesity rate than California, at 25%. Two states with lots of health conscious people, who live next to the water and love it. (also a lot of bipartisan environmentalism in both states, again because of proximity to the Pacific, and beautiful forests etc.) 🙂
Don't forget the issue of food deserts, insufficient public transit options, lack of time to cook, lack of knowledge/skill/sometimes even basic appliances like stove or full-size fridge, and potential food wastage from perishable stuff as opposed to dry/canned/processed. It's not just ignorance or lack of care; there are large systemic factors based on racism, income inequality, and city planning (which is affected by the previous two factors mentioned). Not disagreeing; just adding to your point 😊
@@emilyrln that why it goes state to state and California is one of the ones with the least obesity, equal to France. Our life expectancy is higher here than the rest of the country, as well, especially in the major cities. I believe it's 82 here in "Silicon Valley". Yet another reason why you couldn't pay me to move to a red area. 🙂
I'm looking at the subway app right now, and I dont see a 3ft sub option under catering. Kind of want to order one now just because lol. I've seen the platters but not the XXXL sandehich.
Large portion sizes in the US are due to one thing. Competition. With so many establishments in close proximity to each other. In the early years it was thought in order to attract more customers, if we give you more then you will eat here. You know that old value for money thing. I think that over the years it has gotten out of hand though.
I don't know if the price is accurate anymore, but from my googling, UK large drinks are 1.29 (which is $1.72), while US larges are $2.39 in my area. So no, you're good. Your larges might be smaller, but they're also cheaper. And unfortunately for us, most of what we're paying for in the US is a cup of ice.
live right now, come say www.twitch.tv/adamcouser
3 feet = 1 meter (roughly) 🙂

I really enjoyed this reaction. Your face says it all. I'm even shocked as an American seeing how much larger ours is...I have never thought about it. Great subject to react to...My Gosh, Iam laughing so hard. It' so funny listening to you "Somebody get me a visa"..Too funny
The food portions are different per region in America to
Size in the US can vary, even within locations of the same chain.
There's a pizza chain here called Snappy Tomato Pizza that offers a pizza called "The Beast" it's 18" x 24" and that's the same as 3 large pizzas.
Six slices is the Brooklyn Cut. I get it all the time.
Not as much lately, Dominos took away the 2$ upgrade from large to extra large.
Part of the difference in drink sizes might be partially due to Americans filling their drinks at least halfway with ice.
Was just watching the last video and then another one popped right up lmao
It’s no wonder we’re fat! I try not to eat fast food, chicken is the exception. They do it well enough I don’t have to fry it myself.
There's a pizza chain here in the US that offers a size called Colossus, which is 26 inches wide. The chain is Pizza Pipeline.
The big sizes are for parties or very large families lol.
you should react to more of these videos, they have separate videos covering each fast food places with more details.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos. We’re planning on going to your beautiful Ireland new year, (we’re from the states). New subscriber.
That 946ml cup will be 65-70% ice... lol
All those restaurants are not from the same company. There are restaurwnt groups, but not usually. Different menus, different locations.
Ohhhhh don't mind me it's hot! Same company here and there ...I'm there
thing with BK was a small used to be the medium, the medium used to be the large, and the large used to be King sized. the old small Is just called the Value size.
They are scooped in and there are so many variables employee, amount in holder, whether its freshly fried and added too or the remnants of whats left .
I used to work at subway in USA and we made 6 foot long subs for parties
17:00 3ft is a little less than a meter if anyone was wondering
About 4" short
A meter is 39 inches
if you get a pizza from Costco or Sam's Club, they are 18 inches in diameter and usually taste as good or better than the 'pizza joints' pizzas, which are usually 14 inches in diameter....
@MoreAdamCouser You should watch the full length Dominos comparison, because it has the price differences in it. Definitely worth a reaction. 🙏🙏🙏
In the town I live in the local pizza shop has a XXLG a 36 inch Monster pizza the cost is between $50 - $65 depending on what you put on the pizza
I had to make one of those 3 foot subs when i worked at subway in my twenties. It took well over an hour to construct from prep to finish.
They forgot subway's footlong cookie!
As a regular viewer of food wars, it's funny seeing these videos of Joe and Harry from about 4 years ago compared to now.
He forgot the foot long chocolate chip cookie from subway
from what i remember this is a shortend video of their series. They also compare items that we have vs uks
“I’m away, bro.”
Great video Adam.
Having to proof and merge those damn things SUCKED!
considering the U.S. is one of the most obese countries in the world its not that surprising when comparing portion sizes
The obesity rate in the UK is not far behind the USA and rising.
I always love your reaction. Makes me laugh.
I'm assuming some of the large us sizes has to do with getting events to buy large orders like a school or a sporting event. There are probably more chances for the large group orders and they are oriented on getting those during certain times of year.
And we get free refills too! Let’s not forget that. The look on your face when they showed the fries was funny.
weve got an even lrg pizza from dominos but its not listed. they also got a 6ft they use to have a 12ft long one back in the early 2000s and earlier
In the US, our Subways now have foot long cookies and foot long pretzels.
Unless you order no ice. Like I do.
Yes! And our waistlines are also nearly double!
The U.S. is addicted to sugar and portion size and a huge reason we are so unwell.
This large? Well yeah. Heck I still find the size differences every time I look at between Asian and American ones too.
That cackle when he pulled out the party sub
They didn't compare the sizes of McDonald's French fries. I suspect that American portions are probably larger.
The party sub is great for a kids' birthday party. Easy to serve easy to clean up after the party.
portion sizes are why there is more obesity in the USA, but it's also a good problem to have; it means most of your people can afford a lot of food, and live relatively sedentary lifestyles, that is to say, they don't have to do back breaking labor for a living.
Subway also has a foot long cookie. And churro I think. Check it out.
Subway used to do a 6 foot sub for parties.
Also in the US when you purchase a drink and eat inside you get free refills.
Also we have free drink refills when you eat at the restaurant. I know they didnt when I was in Finland so I suspect they dont in the UK
I agree with you on the BK fries thats why i just get a small or medium. Been doing that for years now
I don't know if the price is accurate anymore, but from my googling, UK large drinks are 1.29 (which is $1.72), while US larges are $2.39 in my area. So no, you're good. Your larges might be smaller, but they're also cheaper. And unfortunately for us, most of what we're paying for in the US is a cup of ice.
