The easiest and non controversial way to make a relic guitar is to store it improperly and let your children play with it 😂
Mayank Pal Ha! My acoustic is covered in bottle dents and spilled milk.
@@guitarmovies lol every time I see mine it has a new hole in it. I promise im not lying
Jim From Cleveland Relic elves!
@@NICKWAPPERER117 mine has different pastel colours emerging from it every now and then.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I relic'd my 2002 Les Paul standard. It only took me 18 years.
Robert Sailer That’s how it’s done
@@guitarmovies in other words, many of you will be dead by natural causes before your guitar is naturally relic’d... cool for your descendants tho!
I’m right there with you years of gigs made it just more awesome and the stories it has.
@@guitarmovies Relic Guitars = Poser Guitars, Stolen Valor Guitars
@@bryantherockerbro this is a stupid comment most guys who relic guitars… already have guitars they have reliced over the years
When you said, “how hard can it be?” Chills went down my spine. LOL nice job!!
😂😂 it’s probably very hard to do right
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I’m not even upset that you didn’t relic the LP. My morning is off to a great start 🤘🏼
I totally get your humor. Been binge watching your videos. So good!
Good one. I’m looking to relic my Les Paul and you sucked me right in. Well done. We can all live and laugh together. 😂
I love the looks of relics. I love the looks of shiny and new. Two things can be true at once.
Omg this video made me subscribe!! Lol I have that exact guitar! And I just strap it on and the relic begins slowly but the swirls have begun, there’s a small tiny dent at the bout and I still clean it as much as I can but 4 months in and the process has SLOWLY Begun 😍
The nitro formula used by Gibson has changed significantly over the years, with the nitro now containing a significant amount of plasticisers, with the result that newer finishes are much more durable and less susceptible to wear, checking etc. Also the dyes used are very different and not as prone to fading.
In all likelihood no newer Gibson is going to ever look like an older one even if exposed to the same conditions. Playing it for 20 years, it’ll pick up some wear and tear, but it will not give a “relic” finish per se.
Exactly! Almost all the newer parts on non-historic Gibsons have a much more stable/durable shelf life than components from back in the day.
Brilliant video
You had me there for a minute, I was, is he nuts, but then you made me laugh 😂 good job 👍
It's like showing up to the first day of school in bright white sneakers! Ha!!
Iced tea burst is exactly what mine is. When i opened mine it was a surprise for sure. I love it. you wont see me relicing my guitars .
I want my guitar to look like I play it a lot, Love it
Looks really good man
The Deedee Files Thanks!
Hilarious! I just got a LP standard a few weeks ago from Sweetwater (lemonburst finish). My stomach was literally in knots for the first two minutes watching this, silently begging you not to proceed. Well played, sir.
Matt Wund Haha! No way I’d trash a new guitar. Congrats on your LP. Those lemon bursts are awesome.
Brilliant :)
I swear to god I love you and this channel. 😆
NickyTee At least you have good taste in RUclips channels!
My '68 Gold Top has amazing relicing on it. 😁
The type of relic that people like on guitars take decades to develop. Even then, most of that occurs during transit. Shipping instruments in trucks, storing them in warehouses, and flying with them in airplanes is how those really iconic instruments developed the checking and the patina.
Most people will never be able to replicate that appearance even through heavy play, So while I might question them for essentially damaging a very expensive instrument, I can't really blame them all that much either if they want that look.
I reliced my Les Paul, only difference is it took me 35 years playing it to get it looking so good 😅
That's how it's done!
Wow, that went sideways fast, love it
I Bought this from Mike today, he's way cool and helped me tie the neck of this Les Paul to my Ball Hitch on my F-250 and it Towed really well and it even stayed in tune, looks cool with all the pebbles impregnated in to the back of the body - ROCK-N-ROLL! Thanks Mike! For the Trolls that don't get it...Get a Grip.
😂😂
I'm literally saying out loud "Oh... I'm so sorry!!" to the guitar🤣🤣🤣
I’m not a fan of relicing but it’s an interesting topic. I do appreciate a well worn in guitar
I love reliced guitars
Me too
Awesome!
Martin Corrigan Thanks!
Best click-bait ever!!!!!
David Fawcett 😂😂 I try
I let out a sigh of relief on the end of the video 😆
Kjetil Myhre Berge 😂😂 I think quite a few people had that same feeling.
My dog did an awesome job on mine.
I just bought one in Triburst finish. The top is incredible. I wouldn’t do this. I might try it on my 1992 SG Junior
Brilliant, the only real guitar RUclips channel for me, keep it up!!
Pauly B - Englishman in Hangzhou Thanks, man!
Lol! Awesome video as always.
Not bad. I have the same guitar and had to lightly scuff the neck up just to stop it from getting sticky.
How'd you know i sit in a room and play the same 4 chords by myself, though?
Oh, the wit.
agreed.
Dude..I was flaming the sh!t out of you in my head. This was my first video of yours that I have seen and I was like..welp stumbled onto another dudd here, sorry I was wrong. Loved the twist. Well done.
“Verily I say unto thee: the patient shall be rewarded with better RUclips videos.” - Mike 3:16
What's that 4th chord mr. Fancy? I have done just fine all these years with 3.
Top-10 tricks for believable aging (IMO)
1: the compressed air/hair dryer-trick
2: UV-lamp exposure
3: putting all the hardware in a plastic bag and knocking them about
4: dabbing the hardware with acid (white vinegar usually does the trick)
5: Scratching the face of the headstock and the bridge area with old guitar strings
6: anding the finish down on the neck and refinish it with oil or wax
7: Putting burn marks on the headstock/bridge area with cigarettes
8: steel brush and coffee to create wear in the arm-, belly- and buckle rash-areas
9: a small stone (or similar) and a hammer to create small dings at the headstock and around the perimeter of the body
10: sand paper to roll the edges of the fretboard
Take your time and use reference pictures and/or RUclips tutorials and the result will look amazing! \m/
Ah I wanted to see somebody do it
Record Album Day!
Gotta say, the UV light box does work to darken (age) the finish. No risk either
So funny. Great video.
Thanks!
I was lookin forward to that cracked finish….
I honestly thought you were actually going to try this, all the while asking myself why? Lol
I only relicd the Front of my les paul to get some checking. Its a 98 standard so the Rest of it already looks trashed. But the top was nice and shiny because the first owner polished it twice a week and it looked like plastic, a lot like an epiphone or other cheap poly finishes
I’m glad you rescued the guitar from the polish guy
@@guitarmovies i hope the relic job doesnt trigger you, but i just had to do it🥲😂
That was the scariest video title I've ever read... I had to click😂
To me I think les pauls look better relicd than strats. People tend to overdo strats and les Paul tend to just get some wear and checking and it’s over.
Does the finish fade if you leave it in the sun ?
yeah it should
Where is the reliced guitar? Any video on the channel?
This is the Les Paul equivalent of getting Rick rolled...
it took me some time after the video ended but i understand now that this is supposed to be funny. i was just sitting here all dumb like wheres the actual aging part? lol
Why lol? I’m sorta new to the idea. I just kinda figured I’d play my Paul until it naturally looks that way, sorta like Levi’s jeans 🤷♂️right on though. You’re right to each his own.
I bought a mint 2014 Gibson Les Paul from Sam Ash in sunny/arid Nevada.
After 2 weeks in Maine's cool/clammy climate, the perfect nitro finish literally
shattered like glass right before my very eyes. I almost puked. Did not see
that coming. My '81 Heritage still has no signs of checking whatsoever.
I took my Tele from a warm room indoors to sit on the deck and noodle one cold morning. Finish started cracking pretty fast.
This took a lot of balls but no different then paying fender or Gibson to do same thing for 4500 dollars lol nice experiment only thing I do is take green scotch Brite tape of the top and bottom of kneck and I rub it in a up and down pattern to remove all the gloss till it's a full look to it all the way down so your hands to stick while playing live or studio when they get sticky and sweaty
Haha, love it!! 😂 😂
😂😂 thanks!
So, I guess your next video about relicing will be 20+ years long :)
Anton Diehtiar Long-term documentary for sure
hahhaahahahahaha genius, greetings from Spain, subscribed ;)
Miguel Angel Sheriff Thanks, man!
nice plot
What you do with your guitar is your business. Mods, stickers, faux relic, all up to you. How I feel about what you’ve done to your guitar is up to me. Thanks for not ripping the knees on your brand new jeans.
Matt Jackson I like quite a few relics. I’d be way too nervous to try it on one of mine. I’d screw it up.
Guitar Movies I’m not sure how you would screw up damaging your guitar. But, if the intent is to mimic how a guitar looks after decades of use, then yeah that’s probably tricky. I’m currently in the process of relicing my guitar, should be finished some time around 2040!
Really enjoyed the video and I’m looking forward to the next one. 🎸✨
Matt Jackson Same!
I reliced my Honda
You are funny sir!
Chad Bouterse 😂😂 thanks!
Mike then: "I adore my tele"
Mike afterwards:"Gibson ruined my life"
Mike now: Relic sucks
Mike in the future: Brand New Gibson Custom Shop natural finish check, aint she a beauty?
just give it time mate:)
Min 😂😂 I’d be ok with that
What’s the Finished product or is this a joke
🤣 Rock on!!!!
His voice sounds so familiar…
He sounds just like me
So, did you actually do it?
no way
Nice!!! I'm also glad you didn't do it, but if you wanted to I'd be cool with it. Bottom line, it's your guitar!!!
Personally I've never relic'd a guitar but I've looked into it as, some of us older guys simply don't have enough years left on planet earth to put twenty or thirty years of gigging on an instrument and the golden era stuff is pretty much out of reach for most of us. The only problem I have with relicing is it could be used to deceive, which isn't cool. I might have to try it some time on a re-finish though... I've got a black LP studio that I'd love to re-finish as a gold-top. Maybe one day. :)
Mark Hoskins I like a lot of relics. I checked my partscaster Tele because I love the look.
@@guitarmovies Oh yeah, I'm definitely down with the relic'd look. Especially '52 Telecasters and TV Yellow specials/juniors! ❤
play the shit out of it bro thats how you do it cheers
I’ve got a late 60’s early 70’s Les Paul Custom, two pickup, Black Beauty!
A friend, who doesn’t play, gave me a cheap ass copy of a LPC BB he found dumpster diving or something. (Bolt on, cheesy pu’s, Etc.)
It would be fun to make a “relicing” video showing my LPC and then drag the copy behind my van down the street and off in the distance!
And just cut the video off there and don’t show the finished product!
Do it!
Lol! Very good.
Had me worried for like two seconds :)
avg joegeek I win! 😂😂
Hahah you got me
Alan Branton 😂😂
My fingers ARE flamethrowers.
Carmen Rago I’m jealous
Don’t be. I spend A LOT of money on toilet paper. It’s a real problem.
I'm actually just relieved he didn't relic that pricy Les Paul.
I'm not that crazy.
When you do it that way its obvious, the cracks are random and uneven, totally different pattern.
I really thought it was about to happen lol
Ryan Metzger 😂😂 I don’t think I could
Guitar Movies I don’t blame you I couldn’t either, I’m one of those that feels like I’ve buried a friend when I get a ding 😂
Ryan Metzger I only stress when it comes to the guitars I don’t plan on keeping. If my Tele or Les Paul Special get knocked around, that’s battle wound of honor. The others... that’s degraded resale value!
Guitar Movies that’s true, I have a couple that I plan to keep forever. The problem is I feel like they are all forever until they are not lol Kids in the house and mystery dings are a phenomenon that comes with the territory.
Came here for the comments.
Me, too
@@guitarmovies yeah honest wear from yearly playing is the way to go.
That was all kinds of terrifying. I feel like I’m gonna puke :/
Hilarious. But some ppl want that age and they want it now. Not waiting 50+ yrs. or forking out the cash for one, even though relic'd Gibsons aren't cheap anyway. I personally will let my Les Paul age through the years and play the hell out of it, but if I could have a guitar that looks like Greeny and afford it?.. Yes, please.
So.... We are not relicing the guitar? ...
I find if you insult your drummer he’ll throw sticks at you and you simply use your Les Paul to block the sticks causing dents
Solid strategy
:)
This whole video I was thinking PRACTICE ON AN EPIPHONE OR SOMETHING FIRST
Ha!
its ironic that you have the name of the video on your tshirt
Everything's going to be ok
I just bought a new car.
But before I took possession, I had the dealer kick-in the driver's door, run his keys across the front fender, bash in the rear taillight, slice a decent gouge across the passenger seat, drag a large rasp across the hood and jump up and down on the bumper so it bends down slightly - JUST slightly (make sure it looks authentic!)
Now, when I drive down the road, people will see my car and know for sure that I've had it for a long, long time, and that we've been through some serious adventures and escapades together. Surely everyone will be fooled.
Or will they just think I'm a terrible driver.
🤣🤣👍👍😎😎🎸😁
Where is the relic?
Never in a million years would I relic one of my guitars. My opinion, when you do that to your guitar, you cut the value in half. In addition, it's more fun getting it that way by playing, the guitar has a history and a story to tell 😉👍
Lmao ! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
JamesHilditch 🤘🤘
no i don't want to do that !
NEVER APOLOGIZE.
GarinEtch NEVER
Nothing wrong with doing a relic. Most people don't want wait till they are 60 to have worn looking guitar. They look cool... big deal. People do it with clothes and furniture cause why the fuck not?
That’s funny ahhahahaha
Never understood paying that much money for something fake . Cant tell you how much time I spent repairing nicks and dings on my guitars . Natural aging , wear and checking is a whole differant thing that can be appreciated . What these people do is like taking my wifes brand new Lincoln , Taking a hammer to it , letting pigeons shit all over it an then selling it for twice as much as one in mint condition . What idiot would buy it ? Apparently alot of people
I've got a two year kid and she can't relic a guitar in the blink of an eye
I don’t like shiny guitar.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
you paid for it do what you want with it
Oh hell naw.
