- A look around the stalls in the Dandelion Market Dublin and a quick chat with some of the stall holders.
In 1970, the Dandelion Market opened on Pembroke Lane in Dublin before moving to Leeson Close in 1971 and then in 1973 to a disused warehouse next to Saint Stephen’s Green where it remained for 11 years.
Popular with tourists and Dubliners alike for its vintage clothing, accessories, furniture, music and much more, the market was also where you could find buskers entertaining shoppers as the browsed the stalls. The Dandelion Market was also the venue for one of U2′s first gigs.

Everything is available at the Dandelion Market, from paintings to knitwear, lamps to record players.
The Dandelion Market, which closed in 1981, stood on the location of the current Saint Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre.
The ‘70s Scene’ broadcast on 22 June 1970. The reporter is Eileen O’Mara.
The 70s Scene was a magazine programme for women and featured slots on food, health, fashion and lifestyle. In the RTÉ Guide on 24 April 1970 Eanna Brophy commented
The lateness of the showing time will mean that busy wives and mothers will be finished with the dishes and the children, and have time to sit back and enjoy the programme. Their husbands will probably enjoy it too.

I was 10 in 1970! I remember this market very well and the smell of Patchouli and Sandalwood incense! It hit me as soon as I walked in. A very potent memory ❤...my mistake I was 8 in 1970! Born in 1962...
All the vendors are so well spoken.
The first time i saw U2 was in the Dandelion Market back in 1976. Fifty pence entry if my memories is correct. I left half way through to meet some friends at the Rockery in St. Stephens Green, it was a Sunday afternoon after all! I loved the Dandelion Market and bought some cool second jackets and stuff there.
Now this is the type of Market I still long after, when you could outfit yourself and flat in great Victorian splendour for pennies

And today, all those vendors are in thier mid-70s and 80s. Time.
Brilliant footage! The Market originally opened on Pembroke Ln. then moved to a couple of other locations in the city for a time before eventually closing down for good in the early 80's

The stall holders in 1970's are all so well spoken. Where are they all from?
Most of them are London Irish, possibly children of emigrant Irish who left Ireland during the50's after the war. The interviewee "Eamonn" who founded the market refers to the Gardaí as "...the police...." That is a big clue to where he is from. Many Irish children of emigrants during the 70's travelled back and forth between the UK and Ireland to visit their Irish relatives at the time until the troubles broke out in the North soon after. .
They all sound Irish to me. Bear in mind the original Dandelion Market was in Ballsbridge, so the locals would be considered "posh".
@@michaelcullen5308 They clearly have a London Irish accent mix, Even children brought up in big Emigrant Irish families in the UK kept some little bit of their Irish accent even if they were born and reared in England. I'm sure there would have been stall holders from "posh" Ballsbridge there too, like the Doctor who appears around half way into the film. But as I mentioned earlier, even Ball bridge residents would not have referred to the Gardaí as "the police".

There were actually three versions or incarnations of the "Dandelion Market" in Dublin, at different times. One was at St. Stephen's Green, one was in Ranelagh, and one was in Rathmines (in the 1990s: I lived just across the road from it in Lissenfield). Is there a Dandelion Market in Dublin today? I have no idea. I left Ireland twenty years ago and moved to Spain.

I haven't actually visited yet because I live in South Kilkenny (isolated village in the middle of nowhere 🙄). I am originally from Dublin and I really am missing it! Anyway I digress. The Dandelion Market was an institution in the 70s. As I said earlier I have yet to see what it's like.

They would often buy a few knick knacks at the stalls. This did not make them morons. I bought my first Django Reinhardt LP there, a prized possession for years afterwards.
