12V to 5V Mobile usb charger using any power transistor

  • Hello friends, today in this video i have shown how to make a simple mobile phone charger with using any power transistor and a 5.1V zener. Then you can supply this circuit from any 9V -12V battery or even any 12V car battery. If you are planning to input above 12v then put a bigger heatsink for the transistor.
    Components required for this project:-
    Tip41 transistor (any power transistor)
    470 ohm resistor
    47uf capacitor
    5.1V zener
    Heatsink
    Usb female port connector
    9V to 12V battery

    Your project idea is great. But the problem with this circuit is it's series voltage regulator. Such circuit is not very efficient and is loosing a lot of energy as heat. As such circuits are used normally with 12V batteries which are limited in power. So the best idea is to use a switching regulator instead of series regulator. I will soon upload a video on such switching regulator. best wishes and keep the nice work up. Regards,

      @@RakshithPrakash You are right but charger have some other characteristics also on of them is constant current supply. also step down converter is not cheap. They are expensive some times.

    This circuit has some serious drawbacks. A) No current limit B) Overheating due to lack of heatsink, exposing the transistor to thermal breakdown C) In case the transistor gets shorted, the full 12V supply will be the input to the phone charging system. This means immediate death of it. In general, this is a primitive "emmitter follower" circuit inappropriate for such an application. It would be much better if a 7805 stabiliser was used and due to the permanent danger of short circuit of the series transistor within the regulator, it would be much safer to use first a 7808 as a preregulator and then a 7805 after that one. In this way, the necessary power drop transformed in heat will be better shared between the two regulators. Again, a heat sink is necessary for both of them. The best way is to use a transformer type dc to dc converter, especially as regards safe operation. Buck converters are not safe in this respect. (Same effect as above if the switching transistor fails getting shorted).

    Some things are not clear in the video, I didn't see how the capacitor was connected, you even instructed that heat sink should be used, everything supposed to be shown, I think. You really tried, please improve on the teaching

    Isnt it better if the z-diode is parallel to the usb instead of parallel to the serial connection of the usb and the transistor? In this case you wouldnt loose 0,2V due to the transistor.
    I'm not an expert so i dont want to teach someone. I'm just curious.

      Yes, this is a liner regulator.
      Regulate voltage producing Lot's of heat. Install a good heatsink for the ic

    Love stuff like this.....your vid shows a 22uf cap, but your description says a 47uf cap, which is it ? does it matter? also, my
    female usb port was taken from a board, and has 4 pins...how would i know which is positive ? thanks, keep those vids coming please....

      Middle two pins are for usb andfor the polarity you have to check it manually

      Capacitor goes between the output of the DC 5 Volt, Electrolytic capacitor is Polarity sensitive not the black strip lead on the capacitor is the negative, it should be connected to the negative of the 5V output, Transistor will dissipate heat so in order to not burn it up or make it too hot put a heatsink on it, you can get them online, it goes on the metal part of the transistor. That is all. I did not make this video, but I am a hobbyist in Electronics and I can help. Comment back to me if you have any further questions.

    Chargers generally output 5.1/5.2 vdc

      Study zener diode on the internet. This only releases the 5 volts for the cell phone.

    Amigos les quierondecir que no valeee. En si si funciona perooo reeecaliennnntaaaaa fuerteeeeee yo lo a una moto ya que queria instalar para cargar mi celular pero recalienta exesivamente le puse un disipador igual calienta le puse como hacen con dos condenzadores e igual manera recalienta mucho sii carga solo que recalienta fuertisimo y da la señal de que quisiera explotar. Una desepcion mejor comprarse un cenicero o adaptador para colocarle un chupon que venden para cargar en el carro eso si funciona, para mi eso es mejor que estos siperder el tiempo haciendo estas cosas
