So it’s a Thursday night in 2022 and I thought to myself ‘I wonder if anyone has a video recording of the original cast of Return to the Forbidden Planet?’ And here it is!! Praise be!

Thank you so much for posting this, Christian. I loved this show when I saw it 30 years ago - you and the rest of the cast were fantastic. Whenever one of the tracks comes up on shuffle on my phone I have to listen to the whole thing. It always fills me with joy, so it was great to see it again...

The Cambridge theatre production was the first I saw and fuelled an ongoing passion for this show. Simply fabulous, with an amazing multi-talented cast of actors, musicians and singers.

This show was responsible for my career choices when I graduated and became an actor-muso. So much love for Forbidden Planet.

Oh my god I was there in the first row on the right!!! This was probably the 50th time I'd seen the show, and I saw a few tours since.. This was hands down the best performance ever. You've brought me to tears. Thank you so much. :)

Woah! I purchased a RTTFP CD featuring this exact cast almost a decade ago! I never thought I'd find a video of the live performance! The guy who played Ariel was spectacular! 😂

Gosh, never thought I would get to see THIS again. LOL One of the shows I got to see in 1989, which had reasonably priced affordable tickets. So I went to the Cambridge theatre and had a fun time. Still have my programme.

I went to see this back in 1989 when I was 10 years old with primary school. Didn't really know what was going on until sat down for the show. I loved it then and still love it now.

Saw this in January of '91. Didn't realize how close I came to missing such a fantastic show! I was in the sweat "splash zone" down front on house right. I loved it, had to buy the cast album. Listen to it all the time. You were awesome Prospero! Thanks for posting this!

Watched this 3 times in theater Royal Plymouth, didn't even want to go at first. The opening of the show inspired me to take up drums.

Great show with a great cast.
I saw this show at the Bubble Theatre, and then many times at the Cambridge theatre, and followed it up with "From Jack to a King" at the Ambassadors (@Christian Roberts you shook my hand!).
A surprise to find this video here, I'm glad there's a record of it. Thanks for posting.

I saw this about four times. 1992 in Crawley I think (maybe twice?). Then Plymouth 1998. Then at the Lyric in Belfast twice. God it was brilliant fun. I think a revival is needed. But not all jazzed up, but as it was.
Definitely shades of the original Starlight Express (obvs not such a big production) but that kitsch unembarrassed fun feel. Brilliant!!!!

Oh, so many memories! I saw RttFP several times at the Cambridge Theatre in 89/90 (and have seen a couple of tours and local productions since). While I was watching this, it occurred to me that I might have the original program hidden away in a box somewhere. Little bit of digging and I found the "Theatreprint" programme and the official "In-flight Magazine". :-D

jarrod nash, it went pretty well the cast all remembered their lines and ques. Only issues were when some of the microphones sent feedback into the speakers and it caused a very loud screeching noise. Other than that it went very well. I controlled the spotlight and I’m so glad I didn’t mess up. Thanks for asking about it! :)

That moment at 10:36 when the drums kick in to Wipeout brought back memories. I saw a later performance than this recording - I think in the mid 90's in Wimbledon, but it had the two drumkits and the multi-instrumentalist cast, I still remember being amazed by Cookie's solo. I've seen lesser productions since, still fun, just not as fun as this was!

I saw this at the Belgrade in Coventry first. Then I took my class to see this in April. We all went in costume and an American gentleman saw us in the street and asked me if we were dressed for Halloween. In April!

Amazing to see this again; I was there that night having seen it previously on 4 other occasions. Then bizarrely stood and chatted on the Tube with the actor who played Cdr Adams on the Piccadilly Line northbound. Amazing memories

I remember the robot singing "Why must I be a creation in love". Mind you, that's based off the memory of the cats from back in 1990.

I saw this at the Queens Theatre Hornchurch who staged it every few years. The same company also did from A Jack to a King, a musical of Macbeth. The king was Elvis Presley "is this a spanner I see before me"

Gerry Anderson of thunderbirds fame made a lot of the projected images for the original show ( on the cheap) which i suspect were still in use at this version. His son revealed this in a recent podcast.

It says it's the original cast, but too my eyes and ears it sounds like the Bosun and Gloria had already been replaced. I saw the show 3 times in the fall-winter of 1989, when the show was brand new, including once when "Gloria" was out and "Miranda" was doing a dual role. I also have a copy of the soundtrack which I listen to regularly. I think by 1991 those two may have already been switched out. Prospero, Miranda, Tempest, Cookie, the Navigator, and R-E-L are the same though.

Wow! Thank you so much for posting, Christian. I’d seen the original cast version about 4-5 times at the Cambridge theatre about 30 years ago, amazing show. You were fantastic as Prospero too. Always wondered how you managed that amazing growly voice every night without ruining your vocal cords. So happy to see this after all those years as I miss this original cast version. I remember Nicky Furre had an incredible voice. Alison Harding was Miranda when I saw it. Is that John Ashby as Captain Tempest?
