Thanks for providing the perspective of us mercenaries. Like you, I like the challenge of solving problems. Sometimes aligning with the mission is not needed.
Always great content. I'm in the process with Meta and it has been a dream come true for me to even be considered there. When I get stuck on a Meta question, I immediately find your videos. Clear explanation and straight to the point. I really want to be like you one day! P/S: Can you do a video on how to explain the solution line-by-line in an interview setting by the way? I struggle a lot to bridge my explanations when it comes to explaining my code. Thanks a lot for the amazing content.
There's no other way than to practice more. The issue can come down to overall nervousness and jumbling your words or it can be indicative that you are not comfortable in an interview setting. You can try doing some mock interviews with others to practice or pay for a session one of the interview services out there to build confidence and find the gaps in your approach
Or it can be because you don't understand the underlying algorithm as well as you should and thus it can be harder to coherently explain yourself. There's so many factors at play it's hard to give an exact diagnosis but those are just some thoughts
could you make a ramble video on how to survive at a company like Meta with their tough PSC's? BTW I really enjoy these ramble videos and your no BS/transparent approach
It's funny you say that because I really hate how my voice sounds on video and my wife always says it sounds nothing like me in real life. Guess my microphone isn't the greatest
Pretty much agree with your perspective, the only time to "care" was probably as a new grad. Maybe I'm just jaded by the hoops that often needs to be jumped through to get simple shit done, by the time it goes through, all the excitement from prototyping is long gone. Cool to see more folks also taking the minimal compliance approach to RTO. I'd say for salaried eng, senior to principal feels like an ideal sweet spot for WL balance and comp...it's unlikely I'm gonna reach the next tier of lifestyle while working for a company anyways.
Your thoughts truly resonate with me. I partly attribute my apathy to how most corporations operate today. Perhaps we’d feel more engaged if we could see how our work directly contributes to building a better society, helping others, or creating meaningful change, rather than simply boosting the company’s profits. Have you considered starting a side project such as building an app or something to tackle the problem that you really care about? Maybe it will help you find more meaning in life.
On the contrary, there is plenty of meaning in my life. It just doesn't come from my employment at Meta. I get a great deal of satisfaction helping others via this RUclips channel and through my other hobbies. Work is just work, it's there to fund life
@@crackfaang unless u can ALSO "get a great deal of satisfaction helping others" in ur job, like a policeman, a firefighter or even a SE in the right path...
Really appreciate your openness in this video. Also this walk really makes me want to go back and visit Japan. Was that Fushimi Inari in Kyoto? It's important to balance your life, stress and work together so if you are in a comfortable position with where you are at now then just stick with it. I am at a senior level position currently and like it here. I feel I have a good work life balance and that's important for my overall mental and physical health.
What advice would you give to someone who only wants to work? I couldn't care about the pay or benefits. If I'm not willing to do the job for free, then why trade my time for money? What future can money buy me if the job is soul-sucking and meaningless? I wouldn't mind living on the couch if it meant that I knew I was making the world a better place. I'm not sure how I can find comfort in knowing how meaningless the grind is.
You can definitely throw yourself into work and make it your life. Many people at Meta (and all other tech companies do this). But ultimately you start to lose touch with the things that are important in life and it's extremely easy to burn out and feel low when the career progress stalls or a promotion is denied. There needs to be balance in life. Mine is well skewed towards the life part but as long as you don't go full throttle to the work side, then you can easily give more of a preference to work on the sliding scale.

Cash rules everything around me… though it also doesn’t hurt when you have a good team and manager
ive been watching all 6 of these rambling videoes. please keep them coming
I really admire how brutally honest you are and not like those linkedin wannabes. Keep it up !!
I try to keep it real 👍

Man, your voice is like Fextralife but better! You have something powerful there.

You said exactly what I am doing!
Great minds think alike!

the problem with current tech jobs is people expect to work in 2012 facebook, but sadly 2012 facebook doesn't exist anymore :(
2017-2020 was probably the golden era. Stable enough infra, great compensation, good projects, and relatively chill. Oh well time travels only one way
How do you feel about old Zuckerberg saying developers will be replaced this year by AI?
then we'll be only using his insta and facebook 24/7
What do you think about Zuck's comments about replacing software engineers with AI agents in 2025 ?

We saw the news. So you probably would make another Ramble video soon. Please do
Will do as soon as I can
Are you senior or staff at meta? I would guess senior given you still have a life.
keep them coming!
Will do! 🫡
Damn, barely working 3 hours a day (sometimes) for a FAANG salary is insane !
Often more but when things are set up properly it can be very chill but takes ages to get to this stage and laser-focus to get everything done quickly
Do you live in japan?
No, would be cool to do so but unfortunately not
Great content, keep it up. Majority of tech influencers are full of bullshit, don’t get that from you.

Your voice is irritating
