Another one of my favorite 2600 games which id spend hours with trying to get through more days.
"Strap on your goggles. Sink into your seat. And leave all your
fears in the pit. You're about to enter the race of your life.
You'll be required to pass lots of cars each day. Through sun
and snow and fog and ice, sunrise to sunset - as fast as you
can. Welcome to the National Enduro!"
The game makes nice use of sound which can suit the different environments you face in each day. A couple of sound bugs due to emu later in the video but I Hope it doesnt spoil it much.
The Game can be called complete after 5 days and winning the cup. You could send off for your badge from Activision. I continued onto 10 days just to see what happens with the score board Wink -

This is one of the best Atari 2600 driving games. The snow, night, and fog scenes were breathtaking for their time. The night scene with fog is really hard.

The acceleration sound from Enduro is one of more exciting engine sounds 'till now.
Thanks for the memories, it was the early 80's, my parents was still alive... Good times. 🕹️🏎️

Thr past had its share of shitty people in the newly emerging industry, quick to shove slop onto the shelves. As far they were conserned games were a fad and opportunity to make mad cash
I wouldn't say the actual blame lies with developers, never has. Investors with demands and CEO's with a boner for money stiffles the creativity of very talented people.
These people who own the publishing companies have money in the billions and with no other goal than to earn more, aquire competitors to have monopoly in their field.
Activision is also bad for many for other reasons: a lawsuit against Atari in the early 1980s for revealing an Atari 2600 trade secret that helped Atari be the sole publisher of games, closure, obscurity or sale of some studios and brands (including Radical and Sierra), transfer of Vicarious Visions to Blizzard (a corporate sibling), franchises dating back to the Atari 2600 or the days of European computers have been closed (eg Pitfall) or sold (eg Shanghai franchise sold to Sunsoft), harassment trial relating to Toys For Bob, Blizzard, in addition to Activision.
Yo tambien vengo de la pension, pero me deja impresionado el como han avanzado los videojuegos, este juego es del 83, osea que han pasado 40 años y se han logrado cosas increíbles, pasar de este juegutio a un forza motorsport... es asombroso
From a time when you couldn't pause a game, you couldn't save a game, all you could do was try to roll the score counter. Enduro was/is brilliant. Scaling cars, depth perception, visibility and weather changes, physics, timing .. a serious challenge to pass the required cars, that looks simple enough at the start, but gets seriously harder with each passing 'day'. When the game came out, the instructions included a challenge, where if the gamer got to the 5th day or beyond, to take a photo of their TV screen, and mail in the picture to Activision, who would in turn, mail you an Activision "Roadbusters" sew on patch. Definitely a cooler time for a company that's only known for the likes of COD and Guitar Hero etc. these days!
I got that far once, my mom took a picture of the screen, we mailed it in and I got the patch!
i got to it, but we didn't have a working camera at the time or i would have had my patch.
I sent a photo of day 5, as suggested in the manual, but I don’t recall whether they sent me the patch.

Cool story man, I am with you all the way until you start to declare one time “cooler” than another for Activision. COD and Guitar Hero are obviously legendary games. So to diminish one time period in order to boost another, even in jest, is the wrong idea.
The fog and snow, that was spot on, and also the tail lights of the rival cars at night, that is just incredible, I remember playing this all night long, we are 4 brothers and when the game was over I had to wait for so long to play it again, damn.
This game belongs in a military/aviation museum or semthing.
If you have Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, you can play it again lmao

Hands down my favorite Atari 2600 game, used to crank up the sound on the old TV and loved revving up the "engine." The console was my son's, and he used to have to push me away so he could play. I loved Enduro the best, with Pole Position being another good driving game. Pit Fall was also one of my all time favorites. The Atari is still working just fine as well as most of the old games. After coming across this video today, makes me want to get out the Atari and Enduro and have some play time this afternoon.
When did you all play this? I was 10-11 yrs old in 1986/87 . I had a blast playing this with my dad, he was good at it too lol. He was 34 yrs old then 😁.
I just showed him this clip and he said " wow haven't played that in a long time"
He turned 70 in March. Damn how time flies. Gonna get me another Atari 2600 😁👍

Super late to this comment, but I think it’s really interesting that you used “anxiety” to describe how the game made you feel; Mostly because I think that’s what makes it stand the test of time.
Personally, I’d also use the word “atmospheric” to describe this game; The lack of any in-game music - combined with the sound effects and the day/night cycle - really helps to draw you into the game.

Poor - because it was one of the five best games for the 2600 EVER!
THE classic! So much fun inside a 4 Kb cart - its absolutely wonderful.
Especially very impressive for me is the beautiful daytime and weather presence which makes the game so much better.

Joguei muito enduro na minha adolescência, hoje com 51 anos jogo F1 2013 o que mais gosto pela dificuldade, mostrei o enduro para meus filhos ... ficaram pasmos! como conseguíamos jogar !!! Bons tempos!
Im so glad I have my Atari still hooked up to my old TV with my Sega Genesis next to it. These video games will never get old. I love Enduro.
This brings back alot of memories. I used to play this all the time. Still pretty good for its time.
I used to capitalize on a trick right from the start:
Begin the game at a slow speed, let a few cars pass, then speed up to pass them back. The car counter never goes above 200 on the initial day (or 300 on subsequent days) so you could quickly have those cars count toward your total.
I always liked the way your car's sound went all swooshy on the snow parts.
This is one of the hardest game ever made for the Atari and this guy makes it look easy he really good at playing this game really good wow

The best thing is the sound that becomes way more powerful when you throttle up. This ends up like some sort of industrial music.
Quite probably the BEST racing game for the old 2600! Holds up amazingly well after OVER 32 years! AMAZING staying power due to superior game-play and variations.

@@kinh0t Possibly. You can create the illusion of having masterful skills just by using an emulator, such as using save states and editing the recorded game play with any video editor. So there you have it.
Got my first Atari 2600 (clone) in the early 2000's and played the shit out of this game, it's just a good fun racing game that you can keep improving at because of the potentially crazy high speed!

Great game play! Someone supposedly made it 398 days, and it took 45 hours.

I didnt know that my atari 2600 had color/ for the first three years I had it because my parents gave it to me hooked up on a black and white tv 😂 when I saw this game in color for the first time I played it like it was brand new! This game, pheoniX, and jungle hunt lol. I was 7 years old. 1988!

When I was a kid we didn’t really get that you had to pass a certain number of cars, we just raced against each other’s high scores.

Lol I can still feel myself twitching when passing. One of the if not the best racing game on the 2600. I used to gear down and stay with the pack when I passed the final car until the day reset to let my hands rest up a bit lol

Yeah this game is so tripped out. Played this so much when I was 4 and it reminded me of tv static, the sound and look of it so that a had a weird habit of whenever snow/static would come on the tv I'd point at it and go "look! Racing cars! Racing cars!" And jump up and down and get all excited. I was one unique kid. :D
ive heard the game ends when you complete 99 days. however ive never seen any confirmation. my best was day 6. a little game came out several years later on C64 called the "Great American Cross Country Road Race" which seemed to find its roots from "Enduro". quietly was a gem

I think my best time was 11 days, and man those cars were
zipping by then. One accident, and you were cooked by
11 days, so you had to put the pedal to the metal, and fly
by the other cars in order to qualify for the next day. A lot of
skill, and a lot of luck trying to make it once you got over
five days.

(EN) This game was one of my favorites, I used to play several times when I returned from school and on weekends. I remember that I broke the joystick a few times trying to quickly avoid the cars that were approaching me.

I used to love this game
I never made it past day 8, but now I know that it does continue on to day 10 and beyond. What an AWESOME game. An even cooler one Activision did for the Atari 800 computer was the Great American Cross Country Road Race, which sounded a lot like this but had a lot more content and options.

Two mistakes being made in this gameplay (He used save states, so he could correct as needed):
(1) Reckless speed. You don't need to pass them anywhere near as fast as you are.
(2) When you pass the required number of cars, slow down, and find an easy set of 4 cars to pass (4 in a row the best). Slow to their exact speed, just short of passing the first one, wait for the next day to start, and you'll pass your first 4 cars toward the next goal right away.
