- Seeks to reach the highest score possible by getting the maximum points per event. The pole vault is actually so high in the end that the score counter rolls over twice!

Final time is actually slightly inaccurate due to me recording after the final input was made.
When I had this in the 80s I butchered a joystick, attached a needle to an electric toothbrush & wired it up along with 2 needles stuck in my desk also wired up & ran the brush needle between the other 2. I achieved similar results to this, but not as good. Toothbrush/fire button coordination was tricky.
Ingenuity is truly something, huh?
Sounds like a lot of trouble to me. I just plugged the mouse from my Atari ST into the joystick port of the Atari 2600 and when you wiggled it back and forth the speed would shoot up in a flash, exactly as it is in this video
Joystick breaker
bit much init?
I tore my remote apart for the Atari 2600 and learned a technique to where my guy would fly out of the screen on the pole vault. I kept doing my speed while I was going up and for some reason he just kept flying up. I had a lot of fun with this game back in the day.
Yeah there's a lot of good fun to be had in Activision titles even if it involves breaking the controller
I did the same thing until the game would stop
Be sure to take a picture of your final score and send it in to ACTIVISION to get the patches.
I should have started this TAS in 2nd Gear.
Follow @ataripdx on Instagram and DM a pic.
Ya, I went through all the trouble to get the score, take a picture, develop the film, send the pic in the mail and get the crappy patch that sat in a box for several years til I threw it away.
The sound effects for walking is like stepping on tile bare footed
O jogo do quebra controle do Atari da época, mesmo assim é top
You can get 23.81m in shot put. When you throw the shot a little bit earlier, for some reason, you gain extra 0.1m.
The more you know
And in long jump, you can get 11.65m, and in discus throw, you can get 73.16m. RusbenCormano got both of them in an RTA run.
Playing this game with a Suncom Slik Stik 2600 controller made it so much easier to get faster speeds and higher scores
My brother and I plugged a pair of paddles into the player 1 connector to see how fast we could run. You moved by hammering the paddle buttons! Pity you couldn't play any of the other events because of having no action button :)
By the time we had this we were using the Colecovision controllers with the Atari adapter so we didn't have to use the old 2600 controllers and console anymore. I loved that you actually had to physically work hard to win. It somehow made it more "real." I loved playing it with friends and my brother. If there was a favorite Atari game or one I'd love to replay right now, this would be it.
Yeah there's really something to be said in regards to playing 2600 games on real hardware. It's very satisfying!
I have this for the PS2 they had an Activision Anthology, game with all of the big games, Seaquest, River Raid, Decathlon, and many others. One of my friends and I tried playing this as teens while listening to Cheech and Chongs greatest hit album. Let's just say our scores were not that good
Joystick breaker
It would have been nice to see you attempt 2.6m in the high jump and 6.4m in the pole vault once to see how much you failed by. I can't imagine how sore your hand got achieving those speeds. 😛
You broke Pole Vault :D First you get "pts pts pts" points.
Then the score goes from 9332 to 19653, then the 1126 from javelin gets you 10779, showing you just got to 9653, i.e. pole vault only gained you 321 points despite clearing 6.2meters. :D
magicmulder math!
:D So the lesson learned is "maximum points" requires you to stop after clearing 5.6 m for 1198 points so your final result can be (11820-321+1198=) 12697 points. ;)
magicmulder Maybe I'll remake this one day and include that, lol
My brother found that by pumping the fire button you could clear the higher vaults...think his best was 5.8
Played this game for hours on end in 1983-1984 at age 12-13. My mom had to keep buying me new joysticks every few months
def a joystick killer
i remember the 1500 taking forever and then my hand hurting when the game said "sprint!" 3 minutes. it was 3 minutes to get to that point.
Yeah this game is a real wrist breaker on stock joysticks
I remember nearly wearing a hole in my hand because you had to both go slow but at a steady pace. I swear the old games taught rhythm.
Was this before or after Pitfall Harry was an Adventure Explorer?
Before, how else could he stand the challenge of Pitfall!?
Nelson's TAS and Game Archive This game should be Canon to the 80s Pitfall Universe.
@@nickwerner7983 Activision extended Cinematic Universe
Nelson's TAS and Game Archive Even better! There should be an 80s Style Activision Cinematic Universe Movie Series.
Did any of you take a picture of your required scores and sent it to Activision headquarters to obtain a patch from them?
O cara já começou batendo o recorde mundial dos 100m
My favorite game of all-time
lol the pole vault
Only the greatest of men can clip through the sky.
My dad played this game on Atari and said the controller broke sometimes lol
It will definitely do that if you play with a real VCS joystick.
@@Geferulf_TAS Oh yeah that's the same one he said he broke lol
9:40 to 13:19
the timer has only a 2-second delay. Pretty good.
Hmmm?
@@Geferulf_TAS The game time counter has only 2 seconds delay compared to real time.
@@dominos7492 ah I gotcha, thought you were referring to something else.
My score was so high it was beyond numbers. I figured out a trick. I sent in a Polaroid picture and they sent me a badge
look at dat sexy atari leg
ruegen watch it at 2x speed
Wouldn't it be faster to fail 2nd/3rd attempts at some disciplines?
All the points add up!
@@Geferulf_TAS I mean, for example, after 100m dash you had 1300 points, then after doing 3x long jumps you had 3000 points, so you only got 1700 points from your best long jump, so it would be faster to just do one long jump for 1700 points then fail quickly the 2nd and 3rd jump, since you'll only get points for the best out of 3 jumps.
I can hear SpongeBob’s “Na-Na-Na-Night Na-Night NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT” Cheer
I have the worst time doing the pole one so hard
I can beat the game with pole vault
It was great game
Why TAS this?
TimothyTim PSP I was bored at my job and needed to kill a few hours.
Nelson's TAS and Game Archive
Hahaha. Okay I totally understand!
The only way to achieve these scores is to use a trak-ball controller
This was actually made on a 360 pad at the time lol
Or tear your Atari 2600 remote apart like I did. I got a wooden stick to go over both of the buttons and could.get some serious speed. I got the idea from playing track and field with a comb at the arcade.
Nem Usain Bolt conseguiu este feito de correr 100m em 9’14.
I am faster than the worlds fastest man
Is the guy in the game supposed to be Bruce Jenner?
He would be allowed to compete with women today
A complete turkey of a game, Pointless and difficult to play. One of Activision's few misses.
Lan Caz yapma
nice joystick manipulation or cheat ...
Do you know what a TAS is?
This is neither. It's played frame by frame in an emulator in order to achieve the absolute best outcomes
