      As my late mother-in-law who lived to be 94 would have said: "Eighty-five? Ah, that's no age at all!"
      She was a Newfoundlander, longevity is legendary up there!

    It’s great that you tell the story of some of the hard-working actors who, in those days, did not receive residual payments for their work, even for a successful series like Whirlybirds. These folks are the backbone of the tv and film industry.

    Really appreciate what you do. So many familiar faces that were very active during TVs golden age through the 1990s that we all recognize but never received the recognition they deserved. The day of the working character actor is long gone, but a lot can be said about these folks because they were always popping up in most of the TV series of the day. They may not have been popular but they were highly sought after within the business because they were talented and professional..thanks again for what you do.

    Kenneth Tobey had a long acting career. I remember him best as Chuck Martin in the series Whirlybirds. He also had a recurring role on I Spy. In Airplane, his role as the straight man contrasted with the other "tough guy" actors like Lloyd Bridges and Robert Stack who were playing for laughs.

  • @RH-zt9ph
    @RH-zt9ph Месяц назад +2

    I remember being around him a lot as a kid as my Dad’s helicopter company (National Helicopter) provided the helicopters and pilots (for 107 of the 111 episodes, the Bell helicopter factory did the first 4 episodes) for Whirlybirds and since it was filmed on a small piece of property we had at the now gone San Fernando Airport I was at that set quite often. He was extremely personable and a very professional actor. He did try to learn to fly a helicopter, we tried to teach him, but he just did not catch on to the concepts well enough to earn a license. I watched a lot of his other movies and he always did a great job for his part. In reality he had a great career.

      As you might be interested due to your topics, I sold National Helicopter in 2021 for retirement, in our 62 years in business we accumulated nearly 10,000 motion picture, television show, television commercial, music video, and other filming genre credits, needless to say I was on thousands of sets with just about every actor you can name. You will rarely see our name in the credits as we always took the full payment for our services instead of discounting in order to be named! A lot of film history!

    Sammy Davis, Jr. was such a big fan of Mr. Tobey, especially in the classic sci-fi films which Mr. Tobey appeared in, such as “The Thing from Another World,” that Sammy Davis, Jr. cast Mr. Tobey as his boxing manager in the Broadway play, “Golden Boy.”
    On the original cast album of “Golden Boy,” Mr. Tobey even sings, something Mr. Tobey did NOT do as the courageous Captain Pat Hendry, battling The Thing in the North Pole!

      With the digital info age upon us, there's a lot of info to be had of behind-the-scenes of TV shows productions. As I found out a reason for the same wardrobe on a weekly basis: The main characters involved with episodic TV show filming, let's say episode 1, scene 3, in an office setting; will also be in the same office setting for episode 5, scene 10.
      So, with all the props, lighting, and actors in place for the filming of episode 1, scene 3 . . . the filming of episode 5, scene 10 would be done on the same day.

    He lacked the looks needed for a leading man especially the red hair and pale skin. People didn't notice during the 50's due to black and white films but when everything went to colour his films tapered off. Ie. The Thing, he looked great and had the lead. But by the 70's it was bit parts in the candidate and walking tall. I always liked him especially in those sci-fi B movies of the 50s.

    I suspect that Tobey and his producers were paid by the cigarette companies to have Tobey smoking almost constantly in his films. Or maybe he had a bet with Humphrey Bogart.
