    This helpful video is exactly what I was looking for! I have been a Ham for many years but I am just now about to step in to the world of PSK31 and FT8 etc. This video was VERY helpful and probably saved me MANY hours of frustrating hunting and clicking on my computer. I am HOA antenna restricted so the low power modes are very interesting to me, now having to use severely compromised stealth antennas. "Dave" to the rescue again! Thanks SO much!

    Thanks Dave! Digital modes are the only way I can enjoy my hf rid because of local powerline noise, so this video is very helpful.
    For anyone wanting to use these modes alot, the Icom-IC 7200 is one of the easiest radios to use. I had the 718 and without a signalink for sound and some sort of cable for rig control it was very difficult to use. That's the main reason I'm selling it. Using vox will work but it's not practical because if there's a noise or someone talking near you it'll key up and that's not good.
    Keep these great videos coming Dave. You are helping alot of people.

    You should point out that many radios (e.g. my Icom706iiG) will need a separate CAT CI-V cable (USB to mini) to control the radio's frequency and mode. It caught me trying to set up fldigi and flrig. The Signalink is just an audio sound card. However, you still can use fldigi by manually setting the frequency on the radio and matching that in the fldigi window.

    Nice video. I’ve played around with FLDIGI on OSX/Win/Raspbian, but never properly tweaked the audio levels. Now I know how to do this versus just guesstimating their “sweet spots”. I was using just little external USB soundcard devices (VOX for a while, then made a crude PTT interface with a serial module), but just went for a SignaLink. Preparing to make the transition from just U/V to HF. I’m hearing impaired so digital data modes are of especial interest. I can get by with my hearing aids for voice (analog FM and DMR aren’t _too_ bad with my hearing loss), but will probably use digital data modes more than voice on HF. Yeah, getting into radio as a hobby when I’ve lost much of my hearing probably sounds (pun intended) strange, but I see limitations as opportunities...

    Hey, Dave, thanks for another great episode. Do you happen to know anywhere I can get the rig software for fldigi to interface with the Icom 7300? I find it very odd that fldigi does not offer built-in interface for one of the most popular amateur rigs on the market.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  5 лет назад +2

      fldigi has been around for several years, is an (unfunded) open source project, so someone has to write the interface. Look at flrig. It seems to have more rigs in it and is available the same place as fldigi. I use flrig to interface with my Yaesu FTDX3000.

      Packet radio uses what is now ancient technology from the dawn of the Internet age. FT8 uses the latest thinking in error-free, weak signal, space-age work. Like a Cessna compared to a 787.

    What is the best way to connect a laptop to a Yaesu 857D radio to use FLDIGI? I have a CAT programming cable, but I don't know if that can be used to control the radio with FLDIGI. Do I need a special cable (bought or made up)?

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  8 лет назад +2

      There are a couple things going on here. You need to get the audio in and out of the radio. There are a variety of interfaces available to do this, such as the SignaLink USB (be sure to specify the right cable). The second is to control the push-to-talk (PTT). I suspect that you can do this via the CAT cable, and you'll likely be able to set up FLDigi to do this, but interfaces such as the SignaLink USB will also control PTT for you. I used a SignaLink USB for several years quite satisfactorily, and at $99 they are inexpensive considering all the problems they solve. Good luck! 73, Dave

    Hi Dave. I'm working through your video about FLDIGI. Got hung up where I tell (configure) the program what radio I'm using. I'm trying to use my Yaesu FT-2900 with a Signalink sound card. Well the FT-2900 isn't on the dropdown list of radios the FLDIGI program will work with. Bummed. My interest is in trying Packet. If the FLDIGI doesn't do VHF. Can you recommend a descent program to work with what I've got to work with. I've got a bug to look into FT8. I have a new FT-891 that I haven't been successful getting on the air yet. (time issues, antenna, apartment dweller.). Will I still need a sound card for that? Just thought I'd through that in there, but I'm most interested in doing packet and I'm seriously frustrated that I haven't had any luck "Hamming" at all. But I won't give up.

    • @lawrycain9739
      @lawrycain9739 6 лет назад +1

      I see that you cover this a bit in "Installing FLDIGI for amateur radio digital modes: AD#26" , I realize I need to be patient. It is beyond frustrating. My whole Amateur Radio experience has been this way. Which is why I decided to pursue Digital. Just to try to find something that will make things more pleasurable. Heck I'm not even sure if we're still doing digital on VHF. I say this because the selection of compatible radios in the dropdown menu seem to be mostly , if not all HF. (at a quick glance). I see there may be some help on the Signalink website. Perhaps that's what I need to do. While I realize, also, that the software is free, I'm thinking this part could be much easier given the obvious intelligence that went into producing it. I guess I tend to learn best from the experiences of others, rather than trying to make my own. (Wise man learns from his mistakes - wiser man from the mistakes of others. However I maintain, Knowing HOW to find the answer is Infinitely superior to KNOWING the answer). Work smarter not harder. All that jazz. Thanks for your responses Dave. Have a wonderful Christmas. 73 W2AAO

    My question about fldigi is about the IC-7300.xml file on Sourceforge. It sounded simple enough, just download it and drop it into the fldigi folder. Problem is, when you download it, instead of getting a nice neat file labeled IC-7300.xml, you get a web page of text. There is NO option to use Save As for .xml. So how the heck do I make this web page of text into a .xml file to put in the fldigi folder?

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  8 лет назад

      I use Chrome and can't duplicate your problem. But, if you get a screen that's full of what looks like html text, then position the cursor somewhere on the page, press Control-A to select all the text, press Control-C to copy it. Then open NotePad (it comes with Windows and is found under Windows Accessories). Position the cursor in the blank window, then press Control-V to copy the text there. Then select "Save As." For file type choose "All Files." Enter the name you want, probably IC-7300.xml. Then you have your file. Good luck! 73

    • @st8kout961
      @st8kout961 8 лет назад

      Someone on QRZ posted it in a .zip file so I finally got it, but thanks for responding. Once I put it in the Fldigi folder it finally synced up and seems to be working fine with just the USB cable. So after a week stuck on the .xml file problem it's all good now. I still wonder why the IE browser did this to me.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  7 лет назад +1

      I'm a bit confused. Fldigi doesn't need drivers per se, but a second sound card might, and if you are doing rig control from your computer, you may need to install an adapter from USB to RS-232 that would need a driver. Computer problems like that can be difficult to solve, but once solved, the solution tends to last. You might also look at the flrig software, available from the same place you got fldigi. I need to use flrig to control my Yaesu FTDX3000, as fldigi won't do it properly directly. Good luck! Consult members of your local club; you'll likely find someone who has already been through this. 73, Dave
